I've been lost in both Pathologic 2 and On Cinema lately, just found your channel. I give you five bags of popcorn and a little plague cloud to make sure you stay on your toes.

Great video 5 bags of popcorn & a little whistle for blowing the whistle on popularity bias algorithms

I spent the last couple of weeks mainlining On Cinema, and it's so incredibly worth it. Really creative stuff. The Trial and Season X really delivered in ways I didn't expect. It has a wonderful fanbase, too. I'm glad there are people like Tim and Gregg (and Talkin'bout) making great stuff for all the niche and longtail people.

Very nice breakdown. On Cinema is an absolute slowcooker of comedy.

I feel like the ‘stumbling upon’ something also adds to the having to put in effort factor. Like you didn’t get recommended it, you either had to seek it out or were lucky. And the experience of being a part of something ‘exclusive’ in some way tends to bring people enjoyment.
Also streaming algorithm recommendations are buck wild, one time I was recommended ‘Bob’s Burgers’ because I had watched ‘The Pianist.’ I had something similar happen with ‘Hereditary’ it recommended some rom-com I can’t remember now.

That's pretty funny, algorithms can be so goofy sometimes.
But I completely agree with you, there is more magic in discovering something yourself. Would I enjoy On Cinema as much if it was a worldwide media sensation? Who knows. The joy in finding a hidden gem might go a long way.

I relate to this so hard. Most media that I love I just so happened to stumble across with zero expectations. That’s why games that get hyped for so long (shit like Doom Eternal and Fallout) utterly repulse me.

Repulsed? It isn't puke on the carpet pardner, those games are good. Except for 76.

Scorsese talks about it in one of his recent essays that now a days audiences have to put-in more work to find obscure things and that's why he prefers curated experiences like Mubi or Criterion than algorithm based suggestions.

    • @talkinbout8159

Great overview! I had a very similar experience with the On Cinema universe, except I somehow managed to watch the entirety of Decker without realizing it was attached to On Cinema in any way. My wife and I finally took the time to watch the entirety of the universe during the COVID-19 lockdown, and were able to watch this most recent special live. Sad I didn't get into it earlier, but happy I was able to get into it at all.
It's crazy because I'd heard of it, and I follow pretty much everything Tim and Eric do, but I think by the time I was fully aware of On Cinema I was like "Oh, that's a lot to catch up with". Glad I did - it's phenomenal.

Your comments about algorithms are interesting. I "stumbled" upon On Cinema about two months ago, I can't remember how, and ended up bingeing it all. I recognised Tim as the singer of Fear of Death which I love and found through a Spotify rec due to liking Weyes Blood. Hadn't even heard of Tim and Eric!
I think before that all I'd seen was that clip of Bohemian Rhapsody from an Oscar Special because it kept popping up. It was funny but I didn't know who they were and I remember wondering who the complaining weirdo was and why they had Hobbit scenery.

    • @talkinbout8159

I fucking wish algorithm sites let you block certain things or dislike certain things from showing up in the feed soo much trash I wish I could never see again.
I love finding weird stuff but lately I've just gotten frustrated and went back to piracy it's more convenient and no algorithms just me looking up imdb scores and reading a summary of the plot and damn I really like watching movies and tv again. I wish there was a way to opt out of the algorithms entirely.

I wonder if people likely to enjoy fringe art/media are also likely to be more wary of being publicly connected to it (in the sense that likes and comments and viewing histories are forever trackable). If, for example, someone has a morals clause in their contract, is it wise to slap a like on a video about something that could conceivably be found offensive? You can't even reliably create alt accounts anymore. I would personally like and review a lot more stuff if I could do it anonymously, and I think this paranoia (which can't be unique to just me) affects niche creators drastically more than mainstream.

Personally, I am more concerned about how this affects the future of DKR. It was so satisfying to see the whole crew come back together only to have the night end is such an unpredictable tragedy.

Yeah I bet you know a thing or to about being on the other side of that popularity bias
All jokes aside, I know it's not suppose to matter, and it doesn't really, and I also know you hear it constantly too, but the fact that you only have a little over 3k subscribers genuinely pisses me off. I mean like your king of the hill video got 600k and at least 10k people didn't sick around, come on people, whats wrong with you. Great video btw

If you bois want to get into weird music get into soundcloud bois it's the black sheep of the music industry it barely gets industry attention so most of the music it recommends are garage bands and bedroom producers.
