I’m glad you showed the clearance issue on the second cut. I do the same thing all the time. Some people will probably say stupid stuff about it but I respect you for showing that it happened.
I have hired a guy to mill 3 cherry logs 17" Dia.X 8 ft. He doesn't speak English and not familiar with quartersaw. This is the best , most simple video I've seen that I will use to show him what I want .thanks .
@@NorthwestSawyerI know 17” is not a huge log , but for black cherry in Quebec , Canada it’s a beauty . I hope I get a good yield with quarter saw method . Im also air drying it and don’t want it to cup . Thanks
So that’s how it done! Nice looking stuff. Thanks for building that shed, I needed some sun.... If you want some rain just let me know and I’ll go wash my car.
This is why I like the super easy WM way to quarter up a log. No splitting the pith, no clearance issues and easy to flip off the slabs :D But great video and work!
@@TheOldJarhead this is actually a buddy of mine that was looking for some cool wood to put in a bar he’s building for someone. It’s going to be live edge. I’ll try to post the finished product.
I enjoy watching you cut the trees up for lumber ! I’ve heard the term quarter sawn but didn’t know what it was until you 1/4 sawed that log ! Thankyou !
Nothing like quarter sawn white oak! The medullary rays are a sight to behold. It is slow, tedious sawing, but the end result is always worth the trouble. Nice job. White oak trees are abundant in Indiana, but no doug firs!
I always thought quartersawing was a painfull math problem then the tedious sawing. I'm a female age 70 but if ever I need the info I'll give you the credit for my success. Thanks. Enjoyed the video.
I like that method and the result was excellent. Not as labor-intensive as I first thought. I’d say that was worth the effort when the right log comes along. Good job. 😎👀👍🏗🪵
I enjoy your cinematic skills...above and beyond...you have a skill. Regarding white oak , you may want to put somestickers in between your steel forks and white oak....it will stain it badly....on my old mill even laying on the bunks!

Thanks Doug. I wanted custom lumber too, so that is another reason I bought my sawmill. The first log I put on the saw was Cherry. I quarter sawed it into some beautiful lumber. Big $$$ for quarter saw lumber.
I enjoy your videos. I have wanted a mill forever. The items I could build would be awesome. Keep up the great videos and instruction on style and use of the mill.
Being the layman I am, I thought that was how you did when you quarter saw. I have seen many other ways. But you're the first one I've seen who does what I thought. Another entertaining and educational video. Thanks!
I had never seen 1/4 cut wood being cut before, Thank you for the schooling...I have gotten to where I enjoy watching you everyday, I always learn something.
Nice ray fleck in a lot of that lumber. Best part is how stable it will be once dry. Furniture quality lumber you have there. Very enjoyable to see the process. As a kid my Grandfather had a rotary mill in the mid 60s ,the part I remember was dealing with sawdust. Thanks for your efforts 👍 🇺🇸🦅🌏⚓️🇺🇸
I think that is the best way to quarter saw wood. I haven't gotten a mill yet but I believe what you have will work for me! Are you still using the 747 blades? You do a great job with your video's! Do you send your blades back to Wood-Mizer to be sharpened? Near where I live I met a guy who gives sawmill demos on his old LT15. I think Wood-Mizer compensates him because I had to fill out some paper work. He had me saw a pine log into 1 inch boards and when I was done he gave me the boards! I really enjoyed that day and he calls me once in a while to see if I have bought a mill yet. I started wanting the LT 15GO then the LT 15 wide and now the LT 35 like yours. I started looking at the LT 40 wide cut but I've seen what you can do and I don't think I need more than the LT 35. Keep up the good work!
I wish I had a 40 wide but it was a stretch to afford the 35. Had I known how much money I’d earn with it, I’d have started with the 40. I’ve never had any blades sharpened but I have a pile of them to take in. Wood-Mizer is only about a 45 minute drive for me.
@@NorthwestSawyer From what I've seen you could use the LT40 wide. Where I live and on my property I'm looking at 24" trees mostly oaks. The guy that demoed his saw with me buys his blades from Wood-Mizer and sends the dull blades back in the same box. They clean, inspect ,sharpen and ship them back at a reasonable price. When you say you have a pile of blades it must be massive! I feel a big part of having a sawmill is knowing where and how the blades are going to get sharpened. From watching you and others it seems blades get dull fast, even if you don't hit something hidden in the log. I was thinking about setting up to sharpen my own blades but that can be expensive and time consuming. I definitely would start by buying Wood-Mizer blades and sending them back to be sharpened. The nearest Wood-Mizer is 5 hours away from me!
