I fell in love with comedians and stand up comedy when I was 10 years old. My step father gave me two Richard Pryor specials he had on vinyl. We watched Eddie Murphy Raw together when it first aired. Yeah, it was fun to tell those jokes to your classmates and get in trouble, but the core was my awe of these bodies of work.
Vicious Circle came out when I was around 30. Laughed my ass off. I knew the level of humor to be expected. It was a blast.
With age and time in the world, you learn more about the pain and tragedy behind great comedians. Learning of the Hicks/Leary theft. Greg Giraldo's tragic death. Chappelle's meltdown. With the exception of Mencia's destruction, it was a lot of reality to take in as a fan.
Norm MacDonald is the only comic that I may irrationally defend, but I'm cool with admitting that.
I fell in love with the anti-humor stuff: Neil Hamburger, Tim & Eric. It struck a chord.
Pulling in this rambling thread: the Dane Cook revelation was more disappointment than anything else. I don't get up in arms about Schumer because it feels like spinning wheels in the mud. More than enough have that covered, it seems.
Enjoy your favorites while you can. I wish I had been up on Patrice while he was alive. Don't let the hacks and bullshit stamp out your funny bone. Life is hard enough as it is to lose that. Don't slay each other in the comments. Crack a smile, brethren. :)

I'm so glad I got to see Patrice regularly back when I was into going to comedy clubs at least once a week back in the day. To me he was one of the greats and it sucks that he didn't get recognized by an audience as large as the one he has now that he's gone while he was still alive. He was just one launch vehicle away from being up there with the top guys(earners) in the business. At the clubs you would assume he was already one by the amount of love and respect he was shown by the other comedians, most club owners and managers and the people that would come out to see him. He did things on his own terms which added to his greatness but also held him back from dominating in the mainstream. Kevin hart is the perfect example of what can happen if you have a great team around you, a strong work ethic and the willingness to play the politics of the game because he's really not anywhere near the natural talent level of a lot of guys but he's smart, is willing to play the game, etc saw an opening with the huge vacuum that Dave chapelle left in his wake when he disappeared and struck at just the right moment and now he fills arenas and makes wildly successful big budget films with actors like the rock.

Ask any comic and Patrice was Loved and alrdy a Legend in the rooms an among damn near everyone in the comedic world.. shame he didnt blow up in his time, wasnt until a year or two after his death that ppl were and still are coming to the conclusion that he's one of Comedic Greats, just wish he could've lived to see the impact he's had on the comedy scene. So ahead of his time.
RIP Patrice... One of the Greats..

Dane Cook was like the second Bush administration: Bush managed to get re-elected, but at the end NO one seems to have voted for him.
Dane sold millions of albums, did sell-out 3 showed a day at Madison Square Garden, then suddenly: NO thinks he's funny, or ever did. All those people from before must have all died in the same plane crash or something.

I wish Patrice knew that so many people loved and cherished him. He thought not many people knew him but only the people that mattered knew him. He was more than a comedian he was a prophet and one hell of a life coach. My biggest regret is never getting to meet him or see him live. One of the biggest things I took from his advice is to be righteous and be careful what you owe.

The irony of today is in the comments of Patrice bits. So many projections and assumptions of his beliefs today, but the reality is we don’t know what he would have been doing…
that’s why he makes such amazing radio by taking unpopular stances such as publicly saying Dane is a good guy. The assumption today would easily be that Patrice woulda hated Dane, and it’s so wrong.
