Thanks! This is the best pannel carrier idea I saw. I love that all weight and mass come from the paintings and that they're part of the construction. Good thinking.
Thank you so much! I'm going to use it to transport my paitings to my art school exams. I was freaking out it won't dry and get ruined. This is perfect, thank you!
I believe this is the best idea and smartest way to carry wet painting on TH-cam. I try to get a flexible wet carry box that can carry different size and easy to make. And I found today this is the easiest to make and carry whatever size of canvas and panels you want. Thank you very much. Will make one tomorrow.
You're welcome. I've tried quite a few different ways myself and this one I find the most practical. Glad you found it useful, hope building it goes well for you! :)
Thanks! Great design! I made a similar design using your idea. I took 3/4" thick wood pieces about 4" wide and ran them through a table saw cutting about 1/4-3/8" deep grooves that fit my boards. Then I just tacked on a couple 3" long wood pieces to make a corner on each. I made mine extra tough because I like large plein air panels--20x24" or sometimes 16x20". That 20" mark works for either of them. I also attached a rope handle so I can carry it like a messenger bag. I just need a bungee now and I'm set! Currently I'm using rope to secure the panels together And it works ok. Thanks again!
Thanks so much, brilliant idea. I built one using aluminum channel and angle, with an epoxy 2 part glue meant for metals. Worked out very well. All the best and thank you for sharing!
George, that is bloody genius thanks! I was looking at a shop bought panel carrier & needed to start weight lifting just to carry it & that was it empty!
Great idea... I did purchase a ready made cardboard carrier that was terrible... I have looked at many diy videos and this is by far the most ingenious... thank you so much for sharing this great idea... can not wait to get it together !!
This is an awesome solution to this problem. i have a class starting in a few days, although I’m not sure how this will work with 18 x 24 canvas. Thanks so much for making this video; such a simple solution to a complicated problem. Bravo!
Thank you I'm glad you found it helpful! If you can't find the channels to hold your canvas thickness I have ones for canvases that I've made on my Etsy shop :)
Wow! What a great idea George, I am an amateur plein air painter and I am building a couple of these! What a fantastic simple solution....i am subscribed mate and will follow you now for more great shares and advenrures. Thanks so much mate, Bert in Oz 😉
Brilliant , well done mate ,, I have a load of 11mm square strips I have left over from cutting rabbets for my frames on my table saw , these will make great wet carriers 👍👍
Thanks for sharing this! I've been thinking about making my own carrier rather than buying premade ones. Your design seems to work perfectly for me. I'll be shopping for materials soon! :-)
I've tried all sorts and this is by far the best solution I've seen. I've ordered all the materials and looking forward to making and using it. It's an innovative design, which I'm certain would sell if you were to make it commercially.
Thanks Rhod, I'm glad you found this helpful! I'm actually starting to sell a slightly improved design of these that should be available on Etsy by the end of the week. This is the Instagram account I've made for them instagram.com/allaprima_art_carrier?
Great little video on how to knock up a wet panel carrier for we who are phobic of doing anything vaguely to do with carpentry. Never mind Dragons Den, why not make up a few sets and see how they sell on Amazon? I’d have bought one if they weren’t expensive. You could make up a series of different. You may have discovered your own cottage industry!
Hi, thanks, I don't find that the track effects the edges much as the painting is held still by the pressure from the bungee cord, however it can take off a bit of paint at the edge especially if the paint is thick. As the overlap of the tack is quite small it won't effect the painting much and this area is usually covered once the painting gets framed.
Great idea!! But I have a question. Do you paint to the edge or leave the edge out and paint the edge at home. Sorry if the question seems stupid, but I have never painted with oil.
Thanks, that's a good question. I normally do paint up to the edge, unless I'm painting on canvas as I tape the edges to the board. If the paint is very wet the holder can leave marks at the edges but this is easily fixed when you take it out. Also I normally use frames which over lap the edges of the painting so if there is a mark from the holder it's shouldn't be visible once framed. Hope this is helpful.
just making a carrier now, pretty simple, flexible, practical and cheap - what more could you ask? I hope to be putting it to use very soon. Looked at lots of TH-cam videos but so far yours is tops - thank you. Took a while finding you on instagram as I used the account name stated in the video but then saw the link in your notes above. I've been trying to figure out how make a wet panel carrier for ages using of MDF, screws and partitioning beading but they were all too weighty. I love the lightness and simplicity of your design, thank you so much for putting it out there (don't suppose you have an equally simple plan for a pochard box?)
This is brilliant!! I def. have to make one. What a the plastic strips normally used for? Just wondering what to ask for in a hardware store. Many thanks for showing your design as well as your paintings! Great work.
Hi Kathy, so I looked into the plastic strip a bit more and its actually used for a range of things such as edges of windows and tracks for sliding doors. Here's a link to the product on Amazon: amzn.to/319wi18
Hi George - a follow up question if I may? I have made your panel carrier exactly to your specs and used it for a couple of outings. I have one problem however, the panels keep threatening to collapse and pop out as they can move diagonally within the carrier. I don't know if I'm explaining that well. Taking a birds eye view, the 'top' pannel moves to the right and the 'bottom' panel moves to the left (or vice versa). Did you find a solution for this? Everything I've tried or thought of so far would compomise the extreme portability of the carrier. Any ideas? Thanks.
Hi Rhod, I find the panel carrier works best if you have panels that fit tightly into the slots as this stops it from moving in that way. If you paint on thin panels try putting two together in the slot at the sides this should make it more sturdy. I hope that helps
Instructions actually start at 2:34. But I've never seen those plastic panels. What section of the hardware store would they be found in? (What are they normally intended for?)
