Im a beginner and I was choosing between these two and I ended up buying the Fender amp. I tried both and I just thought the Fender had a warmer, rounder and fuller sound that the Katana. I like jazz, smooth jazz, blues, RnB, funk etc. and the fender sound kinda fit. But the Katana will definetly be my next amp for heavier styles of music.

I'm an extreme newbie and have the Mustang LT50, but I'm debating trading it for the Boss Katana MKII while I'm still in the return period. I aim to play more along the lines of blues rock eventually. Which of the two would you recommend? Or another entirely for a starter?

I think either would be a great option! Both give you a wide range of sounds and will help you pinpoint what tones and effects you're most likely to use. Ultimately, that functions as a great guide for whenever you're interested in "upgrading." The Katana is a bit more streamlined in terms of its onboard interface whereas the Mustang has a bit more going on, which can be a good thing or a bad thing! If you dig the LT50, I wouldn't sweat it too much. Aim that focus towards playing!

Which one would be better for achieving David Gilmour tones?

I think you could get pretty close with either! I'd probably go for the Katana as it allows for up to 5 effects simultaneously, providing more flexibility so you could access compressor AND overdrive/fuzz/distortion in a preset instead of compressor OR drive on the LT25. Most of the classic Gilmour thing involves a Strat, a high headroom clean amp platform, tape delay, compressor, phaser/vibe/flanger/chorus (depending on the song or era), fuzz (Fuzz Face or Big Muff, again depending on the era), and some kind of overdrive. Both amps can supply all of that and more!

I’m a beginner and I have the lt25 but I was thinking of switching to the boss katana because of the flexibility in their app/software and the accessibility to all the presets. I like to play acoustic, rnb, blues, clean, rock etc. Do you think it would be a good idea to make the switch?

That's a bit of a lateral move though the Katana certainly has the advantage when it comes to power and a different workflow that might work better for you!

Wich was is better for metal and high gain music?

    • @maplestreetguitars

Either would work! The Mustang has specific models of some classic metal amps (like the Mesa Dual Rectifier and EVH 5150) while the Katana's "Brown" channel has all the gain a metal player could ask for with a little extra power on hand at 50 watts.

Is LT25 enough for playing in a church choir?

I have one and it's plenty loud enough for the rehearsals I take it to, even with a drummer. So I'm sure it would be loud enough for you.

Dude... your chops ROCK, surprised we never saw you on stage gigging with the likes of Mark Knopfler or Clapton.
Quick question, for just at home playing, which would you recommend for a nice smooth and warm jazz tone? Also would you suggest an effects foot pedal (reverb) to add to it?

Thanks for your kind words, Buzz!! I think either would do it just fine. The Mustang is a Modeling Amp so you could select a common jazz amp like a Deluxe Reverb or JC120 and tweak it to your liking. The Katana is more like a "Boss Optimized Clean" amp. With either, I'd suggest dialing back the treble, increasing the mids, and setting the bass to taste for a common jazz tone. And both have a few different Reverb options (spring, plate, hall, etc.) so you don't need a reverb pedal unless you have one that you particularly love!

Should have used Fender lt50. Would have been more equal.
