  • The alto saxophone of Charlie Parker became the most expressive voice of modern Jazz, linked in every note to the tradition of the Blues, often in an imperfect way, always out of the bottom of a tormented soul. In a stylistic era in which it was demanded everywhere that one played without the vibrato, the most creative musician of that era played with a strong vibrato - the vibrato of the great instrumentalists of the old Blues.

Bird is fantastic here - as always - always a shame he passed so early- he was ready to groove with the Hardboppers - especially his playing on Cheryl - Super Funky - for sure Lou Donaldson grew into that groove from listening to Bird - and the song quotes- Sonny Rollins and Dexter Gordon’s took that and ran

I think this was recorded in 1950 in New Jersey, and not with Bud Powell and Mingus.

Somebody's got to continue birds type of phrasing. It cannot be allowed to die out.if only I weren't such a rookie!

I'm pretty sure this is Bird playing a "single" in New Brunswick, NJ 8/28/50

Something is wrong with the line up listings. Cheryl has definitely Bud Powell on piano, but not on any other track.

Are you saying Bud Powell is only playing on one of these songs?

If it’s Bud Powell on piano here, he took horse sleeping pills or something like that, cause it’s does not sound like Bud at all. Did he just forgot all his nice chords and phrases ?
    Must be someone else...

Bud was too competitive when it came to playing with Parker (and vice versa). This was child’s play for Bud on the piano

I think he's comping perfectly. Did you notice how he like always seems to hit on the best when Parker is doing like some fast run and he would need that rhythmic/harmonic support but when there's more space in the solo Bud hits the off beats? Is he like a mind reader or something???
