Flying the Made in China Jet - ARJ21-700!

  • A special flight on the Chinese made ARJ21-700 on Chengdu Airlines from Chengdu to Linfen and back. Check out the interior of the Chinese made ARJ21. Watch the takeoff and landing performance of ARJ21. Enjoy commentary from the crew and myself about the ARJ21.
    Join me for an incredible sight-seeing trip to Hukou waterfall in China, which flows quickly and forcefully into the Yellow river. I take an internal flight within China from Chengdu Shuangliu international airport, which is the major international airport that serves Chengdu, the capital of the Chinese province Sichuan, to Linfen Qiaoli airport in Shanxi aboard the first ever aeroplane made in China, the ARJ21.
    I use Chengdu airlines but there are another two airlines which make use of the ARJ21 aeroplane - Urumqi Air and the Mongolian Genghis Khan airlines.
    The placing of the engine right at the rear of the aeroplane makes our seat at the back very noisy and one of the major disadvantages of flying on the ARJ21 is the general noisiness and din overall; even sitting at the front, it’s hard to ignore the sound of the heavily labouring engine! It’s also frustrating that the ARJ21-700 has to fly so low as this makes the aeroplane vulnerable to the weather. As I hear in my interview with the captain, the ARJ21 is not able to fly in heavy rain!
    This aeroplane is not certified by either the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) or the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), however, the larger, more able C919 jet is beginning to gain popularity in China, as the captain tells me, and this can only be a good thing, since the C919 is able to carry many more passengers (the ARJ21 is limited to only 90 passengers, which is a problem in a country with more than a billion people in it!) and also more cargo.
    The ARJ21 jet was commissioned by the Chinese government in 2002 and the first aeroplane entered service in 2015 with Chengdu airlines. It is a twin engine, regional get which is made by the Chinese company Comac. ARJ itself stands for: Advanced Regional Jet.
    After being given the emergency information (I am seated with extra leg room in a seat by the emergency door, but the price I have to pay is that I get extra safety tuition and am in charge of opening the emergency door for other passengers - I’d best pay attention!), I’m up in the air. The food could be better - I initially go for the congee but it’s so bland that I switch to the chicken noodles. There is an unexpected bonus though - a free breakfast with yummy red bean paste bread, a Chinese delicacy.
    The sight of Hukou waterfall itself is astonishing - keep watching to the end to see it in all its glory. I feel that I had a very enjoyable day out and, as a further bonus, I was able to enjoy a number of the hi-tech comforts at Linfen airport before taking my flight home, including automatic massage seats and even a karaoke booth!
    Who knew that China could be so scenic? Let me know what you thought of the whole trip on the ARJ21 aeroplane in the comments section down below and, as always, thanks for watching!

    The aircraft won't find many customers in the west, but they are already building a better plane, as the captain said... You have to start somewhere! And thanks for not making the music too loud and not speeding up take-off and approach too much.

      It is? There are strong signs this is yet another example of China stealing IP from ages ago. This is configured suspiciously similarly to the MD-80, which China licensed to build locally decades ago. Also, the engine is a General Electric CF-34. This plane wouldn't even remotely exist without the west.

      I don't know about the plane tech but I do know a lot about the tech for China's high speed rail and it is basically Western and Japanese. Drives me completely mad when I hear Chinese being super proud/egotistical about how they supposedly have better train tech than the Japanese because they are running at higher speed in regular operation. They don't. The Japanese are just more cautious which is why they have never killed a single passenger (suicides don't count) in over half a century. I even met railway people who should have known far better than most but had swallowed their own Kool-Aid about the train tech.
      I am no expert on it but I have talked with car engineers in China and how much is copied on some Chinese cars is also ridiculous (unlike the trains with no licensing or purchase of parts).

    I absolutely love T-tail planes! One of my favorites are the Fokker 100. Back when I was a kid, during several times in a year the office my father worked for chartered these from a local airline to take employees for recreation or business trips. Last time I checked them they sold all of their Fokker 100s and are no longer in contract with the company now.
    My least favorite would be the MD80, boarding them from the back was a nightmare for kid me. Also one of them crashed into a cemetery near my town's airport. It became an urban legend, even they paid local shamans to "cleanse" the airport grounds.

Because of the FAA collaboration with Boeing leading to a lack of trust in the FAA it means Boeing must apply individually to each other countries body to get it approved. Nice little plane! I do love rear engine designs, there's just something very elegant about them. I know the ARJ had a difficult time getting born, it'd be good to see it certified in the west. As the Embraer and Bomabardier RJs get more complex and expensive, there's definitely a gap in the market between the ATR-72 / Q400 and the new C jets and E jets where the ARJ could comfortbly fit, especially given price wise it's much nearer the cost of the props than the jets. There could be a significant market in Australia, replacing the 717s that QantasLink are nurturing along but are hard to replace. I could see these doing well in Europe too, on regional routes with less traffic but perhaps a bit far for a turboprop, something like Valencia-Munchen or Barcelona-Southampton or Sevilla-Torino.

    Very informative video. I'm very surprised with your interview with the captain of the flight. He responded to your probing questions such as speed issues, flight ceiling and domestic flight restrictions due to bad weather. He was candid about the passenger capacity of the plane and thinking the newer plane under development and closer to the A320 would be a better competitor. He might be stuck on ARJ21's with such candor.

    • @MwRYum
      @MwRYum 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chinese themsevles are well aware of ARJ21's limitations, as well as its place in the greater scheme of things.
      It's like all those prep papers and mock exams before you sit for the final exam, for real. ARJ21 is their prep papers, C919 is their mork exam.

    • @yours_sincerely48
      @yours_sincerely48 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MwRYum It is not true..the ARJ21 is 90 Paz while the C919 is 150 pax. Both serve different purposes. China might need bigger aircaft as population is big but for a small country like mine, even to fill 90 seats also a big problem let alone 150. But due to cheap cost flying a 90 seater plane my country might be profitable to our local airlines.

      easternorient... Yep. "Mad Dogs" keeping their legacy (DC-9 / MD-80 / 83 / 85 / 90 / 95 / 717 and now ARJ-21).
      What we wonder is how much the Chinese have done to refine the Douglas design and make it at least as reliable as the latest Mad Dog before this one, the MD-95 / Boeing 717, which is quite good as I've read (and wait 'till they try to compete with Bombardier's / Airbus entries, the Cs or A220's, which already are top notch here).

    • @peekaboopeekaboo1165
      @peekaboopeekaboo1165 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. These aren't zerox copies of the MD predecessors.

    • @syxepop
      @syxepop 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@peekaboopeekaboo1165, I've never mentioned they were copies, but COMAC did start with a fine blueprint (their predecessors did built a couple of MD-90s and kept the tooling after the Boeing buyout) for them to develop this plane. Which is why these Chinese planes belong in the Mad Dog legacy.
      In fact, the first version is smaller than the MD-90 and closer to earlier DC-9's in size.
      And it wasn't the first time that company used an american design as they did (as Shanghai) a version of the Boeing 707 on their guidance. And that one has to differ somewhat from the original as well.
