      I've literally never heard of this practice before (in Germany)... why would you do that in the first place?? If you don't wanna deal with a clawed animal then don't get one lol

      Socrahontas totally agree. I only heard about it on You Tube. If these people don’t want scratched things they should get a fish or maybe a snake . Anyway I don’t care about my furniture or carpet. My cat is more important than all those material things. I don’t even trim his claws very often because I don’t want to traumatise him . He is my baby !! 🐈❤️

      Socrahontas to be honest, what type of vet performs such cruel operation ?! Aren’t vets supposed to love animals ( not torture them ) ???????

    • @xLiLlyx98

      @@louloulapetiterenarde8573 It's funny how I immediately was reminded of how touchy most German people are with their cars, and I'm like... as long as the damn thing still drives, what is the point of keeping it completely shiny and scratch-free? So what if there is dirt on the roof (as long as it doesn't corrode the metal ofc)? Kinda feels like the same kind of problem - stop being worried of the appearance of your stuff xD
      But yeah. I'm actually relieved that that is an operation done by a vet - still horrible but I thought people were doing that by themselves, like just clipping claws very short and like "down to the bone" which would be even more horrifying than it apparently already is! And I'm very glad that it is illegal here...And also on the subject of vets: Well, I wish that all doctors became doctors for love of their patients, sadly that doesn't appear to be the case.

      Socrahontas my cat’s vet is an amazing German vet !! I chose him because I could tell he does LOVE cats by the way he talks and handles them while he examines them . And my cat son immediately loved him !! The same with the cat hotel he stays in when I go on holiday. It’s very expensive but the owner is a crazy cat lady like myself and talks to the cats like I do . I don’t spare any expense to keep my feline child happy !! I love him so much !! 🐈❤️

    Ahh I'm so glad you mentioned the use of ceramic bowls instead of plastic. Also another reason, probably not all cats are the same but for example my cat had a thin steel like metal bowl. I guess he would get anxious when I left the house and whenever I would come back home I would notice he'd tip his bowl over often. So definitely ceramics bowls are the way to go! Also I really appreciate you informing others about taking in furry friends home

    Great video!! Of course, most cats are fine inside, so I mostly agree. But I've got a cat who is extremely anxious and skiddish and lived outside for the first few years of his life (he's 16 now though). If we don't let him out he gets depressed and hides all the time. So he gets to go out whenever he wants.

    Love this video! We have 3 cats and I have always had cats in my life..always! Cats are the absolute best and one of my cats i swear is a therapy cat for me he knows when im anxious and comes and lies on my chest until the anxiety passes. They're amazing. We have always adopted cats and never shopped as well. So many need homes. Also, declawing....horribly abusive!! Terrible makes me sick. Totally agree that cats need to be indoors. My mom had a cat that loved going outside she could never get him to stay inside and one day he never came home. 3 WEEKS later a shelter called her saying someone had killed her cat, they thought the cat was beaten to death. A good Samaritan brought her to the shelter after witnessing it. Horrific. People are mean, there are cars and preditors outside and it's cruel to risk your cats life. Now my mom has a fenced in yard with the fencing that bends at the top so that cat cant climb over the fence and that works perfectly for her. Me and my husband have and always will keep our cats indoors. They are known to live longer, our oldest is 16 and she is still doing great for her age.

    Another huge reason to keep cats indoors is that they attack birds and other wildlife, some of which is already endangered. Feral cats take a huge toll on wildlife because they're not native to most habitats.

    • @ClaudiaGoetsch
      @ClaudiaGoetsch 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And depending on the species, they can incredibly ill prepared for the kind of predator a cat is. The cat doesn't even have to be in good shape or be a particularily good hunter to decimate the local population of such a species. A relative of mine had a cat that was fat like a giant bowling ball(he couldn't run for 30 seconds without wheezing), but he'd still be able to catch a particular species of bird, he killed 3 or 4 a day and just left them half-dead in the livingroom.

    I agree with keeping cats indoors! My first cat someone dumped on the side of the road so she was just so used to being outside that we let her. She got hit by a car, and luckily survived and lived many years after. But after that we decided the next one would be indoor. She loves going out on her leash and i think it's a great balance of keeping her safe & healthy yet keeping her from getting too bored. Cute cats btw, but all cats are cute lol

      Usually they grow out of this as they get older. In general they just get calmer and will nap more in the coming months/years. Hopefully that will happen for your little guy soon! Good luck!

    The idea of not letting your cat outdoors is definitely more of a North American mentality. I moved from Canada (where outdoor cats really aren’t a thing) to the UK where outdoor cats are the norm. My mother-in-law’s cat who just passed lived 21 years and he was an outdoor cat, you could barely keep him inside. She’s just gotten a new one and she’s introducing her to the outdoors gradually, the cat’s already got her wits about her when it comes to cars, people, returning home etc. Obviously it varies from cat to cat but I wouldn’t feel right about holding my cats hostage indoors if they really wanted to go out. Just a thought! x

  • @teethlikearms

    Hey! Love the video! I would like to add though that although keeping cats indoors is absolutely fine if you have enough space etc. In other countries like the UK allowing them outdoors is completely the norm so we probably have different perspectives!
    Traffic may be an issue in big cities but in most places there isn’t heavy traffic and cats are smart enough to be wary about the road (although of course there are always risks)
    In the UK (may also be in the US) most vet services have routine check ups for cats to be treated for worms and fleas just in case, and to prevent outbreaks. From personal experience of having outdoor cats my entire life we’ve never had major issues with either.
    Overall I think there’s pros and cons for both, and definitely different issues in different areas. I just don’t think the blanket statement that cats are better off indoors necessarily always applies. My opinion is obviously limited to my own experience but my cats have always when given the cat flap opted to venture and explore outdoors and personally I think they’re happier for it!

      @teethlikearms 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ccap3211 firstly I’m sorry for you loss that’s really sad! And sure of course there’s always risks, but for me personally I think my cats benefit from access to the outdoors being able to exercise and having the mental stimulation of playing outdoors. Especially since for our household all of us are in work or education throughout the day. So we have limited time to give enough attention that would be needed with indoor cats!
      Our cats are happy and healthy and I’m sure indoor cats are too! Just depends on each persons situation I suppose!

    • @SuperFredChan
      @SuperFredChan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not just about traffic, though. In a more rural setting, there still exists the issue of disease transmission, attacks from other wildlife, and people. In the US we routinely do the same things--flea/tick preventative, dewormer, obviously vaccines, etc. However, that still doesn't fully protect your cat. My mother's cat is indoor/outdoor in a quiet suburban area, and she would still come home with injuries from fights on occasion. I work at a shelter, and I've seen so many cats come through the doors who had microchips, who were vaccinated, but were wounded, emaciated, etc. I also have too many stories of suffering of cats at the hands of humans, one example being a local man shooting cats with a crossbow. Secondly, your cat being outdoors is a hazard to local wildlife such as birds and small rodents. I'm not an advocate of forcing a miserable cat to stay inside, but I see this "different culture/environment" perspective being cited often, and the fact is your cat and the wildlife nearby is at risk every time your cat goes out unsupervised. It isn't worth it.

    • @flowersandlemons
      @flowersandlemons 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree.. here it is the norm too, and if the cat is an indoors cat, most people will sort of apologize for it when talking about it. Life is risky, but would I want to stay inside to limit the risks? Surely not.
      I do agree about the strain on wildlife though! Don’t get a cat when there are allready a lot in your area. And give it a little bell to give the birds an advantage.

    I think if a cat can cope with a whole life inside depends on the cat, some cats are fine with it, but my cat for instance who used to be a stray would never be able to cope being kept inside and she’s well over those 5 years. Though we do keep her in after dark due to cars (she’s a black cat).

    • @morvhello
      @morvhello 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      becky louise I agree- it really does depend on the cat. Cats adopted that are used to being outside may never get used to, or be happy with, an indoor life. If you have a young cat who has no experience of going outside, it may we’ll be happy as an indoor cat as long as you give it A LOT of playtime, space, hiding space, grass patches, climbing space, etc, etc!

    • @mfreybu
      @mfreybu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      becky louise I have a cat who I used to let outside for the same reason. It was ALL she wanted in the world and to see her run as fast as she could across the lawn and back again for pets in just pure joy was everything to me EVEN though, deep down, I knew it was “bad”. She ended up getting into it with another neighborhood cat and I had to take her to an emergency vet. I was devastated to keep her inside just for her healing process. I let her out a few more times after she healed because she just seemed SO sad. I caught her having a stand off with that same cat in my driveway and I intervened and never let her out again. It took 2-3 weeks for her to stop waiting by the door and crying to go out everyday. But eventually she did stop and adjust. She doesn’t even appear to care anymore.
      So all of this to say, I get it. And I don’t mean to insinuate that your cat would adjust, because perhaps it wouldn’t! I just wanted to say in a sea of comments of everyone agreeing that indoor is best (even when I agree it probably is), I do get where you’re coming from and I wish you and your kitty all the best!

    • @rebeccareagan6711
      @rebeccareagan6711 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with this. All of my cats growing up were found, they would show up in our yard and we would put up signs but they weren’t claimed. I don’t think it would have been fair to them to have kept them inside after they were already in the world. We also lived in the same house my whole life so there was no way for them to get lost/confused. And they all lived long lives, one is still going strong 11 years later.
      Now, my newest baby that I adopted from a friend who had kittens, he always lived inside and we don’t have a stable enough living situation (renting so we will move a lot with him) to warrant him being an outdoor cat. We let him in the backyard supervised and we have lots of windows for him and he’s fine. The few times he’s slipped out the front door, he gets scared and goes back inside by the end of the driveway.
      It’s really dependent on the cat and the situation. I don’t think it’s fair to not allow them outside just because the world is scary though. Cats are strong and smart creatures.

    I adopted my baby last year and she was sadly declawed! she's 5 now, 4 at the time, but she has fiv and feline leukemia. she was literally in a room isolated from other cats, for obvious reasons, but still sad. I was very happy to take her home and ive been in love since. I have anxiety and depression and she's helped tremendously. I dont think id be alive had I not adopted her when I did ❤️

      @ClaudiaGoetsch 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ccap3211Cats are very clean animals and don't have body odor (unlike poor doggies who you can usually smell a mile away). And if you're referring to the litter: I do a full change every day, my cats bury their #2s really well anyway (I teach them when they come to me to not leave the litter without doing a proper job of burying it, haha), so there is little smell anyway. Also, if I'm late to the litter change they will come to me and let me know, cats have high standards! Hope that helps :)

    • @ccap3211
      @ccap3211 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Claudia Goetsch that makes sense. I haven’t been around very many cats so idk a whole lot about them. I’ve been to peoples houses with male cats and for some reason the smell is terrible. Maybe male cats that haven’t been fixed smell worse? Idk. Also it just kind grosses me out that cats walk around and bury their feces and then walk all around the house and on couches and kitchen counters and all that. Just doesn’t seem sanitary to me. It would be pretty hard to clean the cats feet each time they come out of the litter box especially if you have more than one or two. I don’t think I could ever have a cat because of that reason. Plus idk where I’d put the litter box. Maybe a closet with a cat door on it. I wouldn’t want it in the bathroom. That kind of throws off the ambiance of taking a relaxing bath when there’s a litter box sitting right there.

    I’m a huge cat lover, I have 6 of them! I’m also very passionate about keeping cats indoors. Around where I live I see many cats roaming around outside and I’ve have to move two dead cats off the road that were hit by cars. It’s so heartbreaking. I knew someone that’s gone through 3 cats that have all died from getting hit, and they let their new one outside too. They told me I was abusing my cats because I keep them indoors... 🤔

      My cats are indoor cats too. I take them to the park on harnesses and leashes to be outside for a while. They love it. People look at me crazy but I figure they get bored. They even enjoy the car ride lol. I agree with you. Cats shouldn’t be outside unless it’s supervised so many things could happen. Like you said , I’ve seen cats hit by cars and I hate it. I cry 😢 we need more people like you that can advocate for these animal because they’re the underdogs. People think they’re disposable and they’re not they’re living breathing animals ❤️❤️

    I think it's so important that people know that if you have a cat, you basically have to modify your living space to suit them. I think all of the most common issues that people usually have with cats (scratching furniture, peeing outside of the litter box, etc.) Can be solved by furnishing your house to be cat friendly. Cats are so picky and they all have preferences of things to scratch. I had 3 indoor cats and there were scratching posts of every different kind and scratching boards EVERYWHERE and we almost never had issues with them scratching (except when they would get pissed about something, but I don't think that's the same issue). Also some of my cats were skiddish so having hiding places was imperative whereas some of my cats were what I call "up cats" who just want to be up high, so we had trees and shelves and stuff all over. I think the most important thing for multi cat households with cats that weren't best friends was having many litter boxes that are easy to access. We literally had a open litter box in our common area of the house because one cat wanted to be close enough to see what we were doing when she went to the bathroom, but couldn't have a hooded box because she felt trapped and terrified with only one exit while she was "compromised". If people want a cat but don't want to change their living space to accommodate what their cat(s) need, they shouldn't have a cat.

    This cat that I have now is the first cat I have had that doesnt fight with me or break stuff to go outside. It seems I always adopt alley cats that have to be outside or they freak out. Man, they are expensive cats if you let them outside and I always worried about them while they were outside. Funny enough, I found my cat that I have now, Outside. He was born outside and left by his mom. I heard him crying. I was only going to foster him until he was weaned but now he is apart of the family and the coolest. He really has to be around me all the time or be able to see me .

    Honestly, it depends on the breed. If you're looking for breeds with severe genetic defects (ie. Persians, Exotic Shorthairs, Scottish Folds) that were bred purposefully for aesthetics with no concern for their health, then that's a big no-no imo.
    However, supporting naturally-occurring breeds (Russian Blues, Abyssinians, Aegeans, Egyptian Maus, etc.) ensures healthy cats that won't contribute to the pool of cats being given up for adoption (Most responsible breeders will ask you to sign a contract wherein should you have to give them up for _any_ reason, they must be surrendered back to the breeder), _and_ preserves an ancient line of cat that has been in place for generations.
    I've had cats all of my life, the vast majority of them being mixed moggies that have been either shelter cats, stray (not feral) cats, or cats that were free to a good home. However, I _did_ have a Russian Blue at one point as a child, and she lived to be almost 23 years old!

    I love cat guardians who respect that their cats are individuals unlike many dog lovers / owners who want the dog to exist purely to fawn and obsess over them. That’s why people end up saying ‘I hate cats’. Because they ignore humans when they want, which ironically is a huge reason why we cat lovers love them haha.

    When I adopt a cat I will be getting pet insurance this time around. With the high vet prices now I would feel so much better having it. The only issue is the insurance companies don't directly pay the vet the way human insurance does. So you need to come up with the money first and then file a claim. So you still need a credit card, savings or something like Care Credit. At least however you know you will get your money back and can pay the credit card payment off in full.

    I’ve had numerous kitty’s in my lifetime thus far. Currently have two females who have no choice but to love one another 🥰 and they’re in fact indoor kitty’s. But in my veterinary career over 15 years I’ve seen plenty of people who keep their kitty’s on a harness and go hiking with them. I find that to be so freeing and a safer way to allow your feline outdoors if you must. The funny thing is if I leave my door open which I pretty much never do, my older kitty girl will sit right at the front door and look at me like “lady you crazy I’m not stepping foot out there” lol the other one is more skittish and haven’t encountered her near the door once yet. Like to keep it that way since my street is like a cat colony lol love your vids 💙

    I also had a cat that obsessively over-groomed, except it was on his stomach. He would lick his belly so much that it became bald and sometimes would get rashes from abrasion. We tried different foods and tested things he might be allergic to but it was kind of the same thing, he just obsessively groomed and it seemed like a behavioural thing. We also coned him when it was bad so he could heal but I can’t say we found a solution. I will say that a cat with a bald tummy is pretty hilarious though, especially when they sit on their bum to groom and he had his belly out looking like an old man.

    I completely agree with all of these tips. We also used to have outdoor cats when I was a child. I'm from a very rural area and keeping your cats indoors is considered to be somewhat odd here. I will say that if you choose to let your cats roam outside, it isn't a guarantee that anything will happen to them, but it's still not safe. I have had a few (4) cats who were indoor/outdoor cats over the years who lived to be 15 to 18 years old. That being said, the risk is not worth it to me. Maybe your cat will be lucky, maybe it won't be. It's best to keep them inside to be sure that they live the longest life they can. When I was a kid, one of our cats was hit by a car, and another was mauled by a raccoon, a few others simply disappeared. I would never let my current cat outside without a harness for fear that an animal, or sadly, a person would hurt him. I adopted my little guy from a shelter, and much like you, I immediately adopted him. He's really great.

  • @LoomiTunes
    @LoomiTunes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Some more tips :)
    Always have at least one litter box per cat, the best thing is if you could have as many as you have cats plus one. This is so one box is always available and the cats can do their business in peace and not stress each other. Also, the boxes should be placed in different locations around the house.
    The same goes for food and water bowls, always have more than one and don't put the food next to the water since cats don't like to drink where they eat. Bowls can be placed throughout the home and preferably on different heights (on window sills, scratching posts/trees etc).

    People call me crazy for walking my cats on leashes but they’re indoor cats 💀 so I take them outside on their leash. Egypt (my girl cat) would rather stay in the kennel and watch her brother (Kendrick) play outside. Meanwhile Kendrick walks and plays. I technically don’t walk him he walks me 💀 I let him lead. It pretty much supervised outside time and he loves it. Especially when my sister brings her dog with us. They have a ball at the park running through the field 💀 I think Kendrick a dog low key 💀 but he taught Charlie (my sisters dog) how to be a cat and how to play the cat way. Charlie rubs her body on the furniture now LMFAO
    See, My first cat was Meekah. I had to give her to a friend because I was moving and I didn’t end up moving because of COVID. 😔 my friend has two kids and her kids got attached so I let her keep Meekah. Even though I’d had Meekah since she was able to leave her mother she was 2. Even though I get to visit her it’s not the same. So I ended up adopting an older cat from the humane society and sadly she died three weeks after I got her apparently she stomach cancer. Which wasn’t mentioned when I adopted her if I knew I would’ve got her the help that she needed 😔😔 I was so depressed so I ended up adopting a brother and sister pair. They were 2.5 months old when I got them. Kendrick and Egypt I named them, I still have them and they are the best thing that’s ever happened to me 💀💀

    Hi, I love your content and have been following it for years. I know this is an old video, but it just popped up on my 'For You' page and I thought I'd just note some advice.
    Enclosed litter boxes aren't what cats want. At one of their most vulnerable moments, they want to be able to see their surroundings. As an owner, you should also be aware that depending on the litter you could be allowing your cat to be enclosed in a toxic box that's damaging their respiratory system slowly over time.

  • @TheUnique1981
    @TheUnique1981 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice video. Your cats are so cute.
    I just wanted to share my personal opinion to my observation of everything I've heard about owning animals. Cats do not necessarily vomit a lot if you avoid store bought food. If you start cooking for them - wild caught salmon, butcher cut, fresh meats, vegetables, homemade gravies with small slice of pure butter or coconut oil you will be surprised how rarely you'll have them vomit their furballs. And they'll have the softest beautiful fur coats.
    Other thing that rang the bell in my mind from this video was how declawing hurts and puts them in distress yet spaying and neutering is highly recommended. Removing all reproductive organs is a major surgery. Plus that all hormones get messed up. Please people be wise. Think before you fall for these "in-trend" procedures. Not long ago in USA a big thing was to remove tonsils. Was recommended by physicians. You know your pet. Do what is the best for it and what fits your lifestyle. But don't be selfish and narrow minded. My cats are indoors. Going outside only when I can manage to be with them and not letting them move without me being around. Be responsible but do what is good for your cat not what is easier or popular.

    Ok... My cat spends a lot of time outdoors. He always comes home and almost every week he brings a rat or a bird... I don't even know where he poops. [I live in a bushy area] I know he frequents a lot of houses in my street and he is loved by everybody. He just appeared here 7 years ago and he is healthy (a bit overweight) even though he is infected with FIV since I discovered him... But every now and then I get him checked out

    Water tip: you can add extra water into their wet or dry food to up their intake.

    I loved this video!
    I strongly agree with not letting cats outside. I would be so terrified of them getting hit by a car or someone taking them :((
    Thank you for mentioning the water thing oh my god my baby boy has been dumping his water bowl out the last few weeks and I’ve had no idea WHY 😭 hopefully this will stop it
