It's a much large problem. Why is Deepika paired opposite Saif but Deepika's husband is paired with Saif's daughter. Likewise Katrina is paired with Saif but Katrina's husband is paired with Saif's daughter. Aishwarya is paired with Anil Kapoor but Aishwarya's husband is paired with Anil's daughter. This will continue to occur till we continue to lap it up. It's good that there are discussions around it now and some actually feel it's intolerable.
Why is it a problem and intolerable? I genuinely don't understand why? It's far more common for an older man to be with a younger woman than the other way around. And women want that! They want a mature man and men tend to not want a mature woman!
I feel like actors like Salman, SRK, Aamir, Akshay, Ajay Devgan, etc will actually have a much better screen presence when they have actresses close to their ages starring opposite them. Their pairs back in the 90s are what made them iconic. I would love to see Madhuri and Salman share the big screen again. Just them being on the same screen would generate cheers I feel.

I think De De Pyaar De deals with this topic in quite a mature light; but I think Cheeni Kum handled such a relationship among the very best in Bollywood, with the sincerity it deserved.
Cheeni Kum was amazing! Loved De De Pyar De also, because the actors were actually playing their real ages. I don't see anything particularly wrong in an older man having a relationship with a younger woman. Or, an older woman with a younger man for that matter! What makes it an issue is when an actor who IS and clearly LOOKS like he is in his 50s, is playing a character who is supposed to be 30! And therefore paired against a 25 year old actress, who is playing a character of her own age.

Why not turn a blind eye to the age gap? The actors are so good a normal viewer doesn't even worry about it. Also they are two spies at a high level working in the same area. I still understand some motives behind casting Deepika or Anushka or Kareena beside the Khans. Even though they are younger, they are still hugely popular and bring a large number of audience to cinema. Also they are in their late 30s and early 40s so thats kind of okay against heroes who are 57 years old. At lease they are not baby faced 21 year olds who look like hero's daughter rather than roamntic lead. But I will never understand casting a new actress like Sai Manjrekar against Salman or Manushi against Akhshay Kumar. They are newbies. No one knows much about them and they don''t have fans which would bring audience to cinema. Then whats the point beside just adding glamour to your movie. That glamour is alright if we have to just see them on screens dancing or acting but when you add almost 60 year old actors dancing alongside them and romancing the girls who are of their daughter's age is just creepy. I appreciate the actors who are now not taking part in such movies where they have to romance such girls. Saif, specially since Sara debut, have totally changed his movie choices and not try to extend his youth by pairing up with 20 somethings. SRK is still better as his last movies were with Deepika, Anushka or Katrina. But Salman and Akshay Kumar really needs to open their eyes and look into mirror. Completely agree. Bollywood should bring back actresses like Juhi, preety, Madhuri, Kajol, Rani opposite srk, amir, rhithik, Akshay, salmaan, amir (provided- good quality stories). Today's audience will prefer watching their films rather than these absurd pairings. Plus these actors- actresses are way better at delivering movies than some of today's new "talent" 😅
It's a audience fault too..... because they don't wanna see older heroines playing roles which are mostly played by Khans, Kumars, devgans etc. Women do deserve the same sort of stardom at the age 40s, 50s & 60s like their male counterparts. I do agree the audience are partially to be blamed for this, but I personally would do anything to see madhuri, karishma, sushmita etc… back in screen. I wish that they could make a comeback, it’s unfrair to them they had to retire so early while their male counterparts are able to continue their career. No blame to the men tho, just wish that they would chose to work with these actresses. The khans and AK definitely have enough power to demand that.
SRK paired with Kajol recently in Dilwale in 2015 and honestly it was jarring to see them as a romantic couple now, coz it immediately reminds us that SRK is old man now, but we out of our nostalgia never want to let go of the romantic arms-expanding SRK! That’s the core issue. If SRK plays his age, majority of general audience won’t like it.
That's not what i felt tho. His romance with kajol was raw and real. It brought so much life to the movie, like a certain gravitas to the plot that secured my attention. If it weren't for the ridiculous patch up plans of varun dhawan, i would very much like to see kajol and srk's characters find their way back to each other on their own, like it's their love story alone. They have the chemistry for it to work. Now we are both allowed to have opinions on the same so i won't expect you to just accept mine. Just that, what do you think of this- I'd much rather prefer an older actress in place of deepika in pathaan. Srk looks older in that movie too and it can sit right by the plot for him to be a hunky and charming 50 yr old, now being paired with a woman isi agent age from pakistan, just older. I would very much like that. I could narrow it down to sushmita sen, raveena tandon and shilpa shetty, anyone who can deliver the punches and bring the glamour to fit the role. I mean if an actor can do it at 50, so can an actress. We're just not used to seeing it.

I think the Bengali industry is quite better in regarding this matter recently..... I mean, there is an age gap but it's far smaller; and senior stars like Prasenjit Chatterjee mostly is paired against other actresses of his age range like Rituparna Sengupta or Aparajita Adhya.

Most of his films are against actresses like Mimi, Subhasree, Nusrat, Koel, etc.; who while still have an age gap is not in general bigger than 10 years. real problem here is the hero worship, the actors like chiranjeevi, pavan kalyan, ravi teja are hesitant even today to play their age so they sign up actress who are below 25. there is bare minimum respect when it comes to script or character here.
I can't digest the fact that Chiranjeevi has movies with Kajal Aggarwal and Shruti Hassan when his OWN SON Ram Charan has movies with them as romance partners.. 🤢 And even Ram is older than Shruti (and of same age as Kajal).. Even Hollywood films have huge age gap between the male and female protagonists. Age is just a number. Love can happen at any age. Even 60 year old men have married 30 year old women. Falling in love with a person of huge age gap is not a problem but not addressing/acknowledging the age gap in the film is the actual problem.
Bachchan had no other go. He tried hard in the 90s to play the young roles but all the films bombed at the box office. Now with all the possibilities of cosmetics and CGI, superstars has that option to play young in their 60s, an opportunity that old heroes didn't had

@@TriedRefusedProductions I don't think there is even anything wrong in supporting roles. Supporting roles can often be very strong and add importance to the story as much as the lead character, the issue is more the quality of that supporting role that needs to be kept in mind when he chooses one.
I just want to point it out that the problem with Avneet and Nawaj is that most of the Indian audience have seen Avneet grow up in front of their eyes on screen. We've been seeing her since she was a little kid and we feel protective of her and it's just wierd for people to see her in this situation. I'm not saying it's right or wrong but I get where this opinion is coming from. While it's not the case for other age gap female celebs that's why the audience just mock them and not feel protective of them.
I didn’t know her before this movie. I think anyone can see the difference of age and feel uncomfortable, no need to feel protective due to familiarity since her childhood for that.

Nayanathara has good stardom but still acting with Balayya, Rajinikantha etc , In those films she has hardly 10 minutes screen time. Anushka Shetty is not doing films regularly in recent times , during bhagamatie promotions she said that scripts should exite her otherwise she won't act in regular films.

I think we can’t blame the older male actors for it solely as film makers cast on what they perceive will get more seats filled. If the male actors who garner huge box office numbers protested against the choice of actresses due to age that would also be seen as bad too. Taking away opportunities from young actresses to succeed. It most likely has to do a lot with who will sell more tickets.. as the actor and the actress that drives filmmakers to cast younger actresses. Who basically have different qualities that sells a movie… often it’s not the most talented and knowledgeable and nuanced actor or actress that drives ticket sales… is that unfair.. or is it how it is.. does it take a skill or charisma or personality or looks above acting skills to sell tickets. So far box office has been saying larger than life actors and pretty actresses drives sales so we see more of it. Like at a time movies about nris living lavish lives abroad sold tickets.. which has changed now to stories of Indians from India… the age gap might change too… but critics and reviewers and outside entities pushing for things that’s different from what masses want lead to Bollywood not being able to compete with south cinema… movies that did great like kgf rrr were able to put people on seats while Bollywood couldn’t.
As per my observation, due to the regressive nature in Indian Film Industry that heroines have limited shelf life, there is a constant pressure for the actresses to take up roles to stay relevant and on top of their game despite being aware and uncomfortable. Actresses like Hansika, Tamannah, Shruthi Hasan, Kajal Aggarwal who have done a round trip across all South Indian industries with almost all the top heroes are perfect examples that they want to stay relevant despite having limited roles as glam dolls in big budget movies. However, there are some actresses who have broken this norm and excelled in their fields.
This is not regressive. It's just simply that being an action hero not every guy can do but it's very easy to find (and there's a large supply of) good-looking, young women who will happily take up a romantic role next to action hero for a chance to be famous.

The other way to look at this is that Male Actors get supporters by the projects they have done and thus the older they are (obviously they have to be very good) will get more famous whereas female actors get famous not only because of their projects but also their beauty, so after they age, gain weight their fan base decreases. This, is how audience is and it can only change when we stop associating beauty as a measure to value someone in this field.

Fault lies in the actors and the audience not facing their heroes are aging and need to be appropriately cast in movies. We are to account as well especially this is what perpetuates this rubbish. On a lighter note I enjoyed Manmadhu 2 where the age gap in a rom com was central to the story 😊
How will you get audience to feel guilty for wanting to embrace imagination and suspend disbelief to see a guy they grew up rooting for still being strong and kicking butt and getting a good-looking girl and doing crazy stunts? Audience wants to have fun in India, they don't want to watch a boring movie where people lecture them about social issues when their life is itself one massive social issue already
Everything boils down to the acceptance by the audience. Anything goes as long as moviegoers ignore (not oblivious) the age gap. The wider Indian brain is hardwired for this and its ingrained in it's psyche (more so in the south). Have the audience reject such pairings and you will see change occurring. I requires a generational mind shift. Ain't happening soon.
I wondered this when I was watching Suryavanshi in the cinema hall that if the tip tip barsa pani song being recreated on Akshay-Raveena duo instead of adding katrina in the mix, it would have been magical and valid at the same time. Though, no doubt katrina aced the dance number, still the role also suited the timeline of the movie if Raveena Tandon had been the female opposite as she would have been the apt casting.
Amitabh didn't do it out of choice but more out of circumstance. Same with Anil Kapoor who needed a lot of convincing to sport white hair in Dil Dhadakne Do and the actresses who denied Shefali Shah's part as they didn't want to play mother to Ranveer and Priyanka.
The welcome change from choice or circumstances is still welcome! But if you get stuck in a flux like Govinda who still wants to be the desirable hero: the offers just won't pour in

My point with the circumstance was till the audience keeps supporting this there's not going to be any change from within the industry. Good that you spoke about this issue. I've felt uncomfortable about this since I was a kid. I've consciously avoided watching such movies no matter how big of a box office hit the film might be. I never understood how this (female actors cast in adult female roles as early as 13) is not child s*x**l abuse and why most Indians (male actors, their young female co-stars, and their fans) find this as something to be proud about. This also shows the psychological side of such female actors and female fans with daddy issues, which is much more screwed up.
You have to remember that 30 years or even 20 years ago was much different time in India when public school was not available for most people and jobs for women were very less. What options were there for most women post puberty? Stay at home and have family pay for you but you can't work and can't afford school / college? It was for this reason common and even necessary many of them became adults much faster than women nowadays. Do not find it gross and uncomfortable, try to understand that time and that place, not always place everything in your situation

I think tamil cinema is improving a lot because superstars like rajinikanth and kamal haasan has started to act in films which has roles according to their age and without heroine and tier 1 actors like vijay and ajith have started to act with heroines who are almost equal to their age and in movies which has story according to their age.
Not slightly uncomfortable but very. I have always found it creepy and disgusting the way these female actors when they were kids were made to romance actors, their grandfather's age. It still continues, but if you have a female actor who is a few years older than the male actor, then it's a problem.
Why is it disgusting? They would be considered kids now, but back then in a time when there was no guaranteed schooling, no jobs for women, how can you consider a 16-17 year old woman who finished school 6-7 years ago and has been living a domestic wife type life for 5 years to be a kid?

I was shocked when I found out Hamsika Iyer(the ShakaLaka Boom Boom actress)and Divya Bharti were romancing not innocently but full on objective way on screen at only age of 15-16 or even less. But got heart attack seeing how Sri Devi was only 13.🤒 Our industry grossly take advantage of minor girls who look adults. I also didn't expect Kangna to this same mistake. Expected better from her. But i don't think movies that justifies big age gap needs to be applauded either otherwise director will give one line to actress "I like older men" and be done with it instead of fixing it. Sneaky. I don't think it's just the absolute numbers that is the point, but the relative gap. Like SRK and Deepika in Om Shanti Om are a little icky. But the difference feels much less in Pathaan. Same with Salman-Katrina in Bharat compared to their earlier movies.

Even though she was totally eligible and very qualified. She was also subjected to many controversies about her and MGR. People talk about it still 😭. If u see she was 17 and MGR was 48 in their first movie together.... Nobody thought that MGR needs to be questioned or any other older actor who acted with her, but her! There have also been instances in Tamil cinema, where i have seen the male protagonist romancing a female protagonist with whom they have acted in the past as a father and daughter.. 😭 literally the actress was a baby and then woahhhh she's acting as a romantic interest after few years 🥴
Bro, there's a movie in Telugu, where Sridevi played the character of a grand daughter to Sr NTR (Badi Pantulu is the movie name), and cut to few years into the future, she was the lead heroine next to him. I think heroines should unite together and just reject offers of this sort. They can very well pick heroines of their time and age and pick stories that fit their age and maturity! Society needs so much to be told, and I'm sure today's generation is wise enough to accept any work of art. All we need is some truth, honesty and some entertainment that's all! I hope makers keep this in mind and stop falling behind mere commercial crap!

It's actually not that much of a gap between lead actors on tv serials actually. The age gaps are most of the times less than 15 years which isn't even creepy, but the constant age gap of more than 20-25 years between leads in almost every Bollywood movie is disturbing.

Age gap between the leads isn't always the problem. It's the story script which is often the problem. If the script itself is shitty, the actors can't always save the film inspite of their "creepy" age gaps. Let's see a film with Malaika Arora and Arjun Kapoor in the leads.
I'm convinced actors in their 60 can still play action heros in a convincing way as long as the screenplay is good. Liam Neeson started to play action movies in his late 50s with the film "Taken". The hero had to save his daugther and it was a big succes!! But it's ridiculous to have a 60 year old falling in love like a teenager.

These differences are too uncomfortable to watch. And it's a fact that the chemistry is another level when two actors are in a similar age group. I don't think SRK has looked that good with younger actors. His chemistry with Kajol and Juhi chawla was another realm of romance. Similar case for Salman. I still get goosebumps watching him and Aishwarya in hum dil de chuke sanam. My favourite pairing. But cinema somewhere reflects the reality of the society. As I am in the arranged marriage market, I can tell you that guyz won't even accept proposals of women just a few months older to them. If she is 7-8 years younger, its all cool. That's the thinking. That's what you see in popular cinema. She can be a teenager but not an aunty!

I'm not comfortable with more than 4 yrs of gap and I can marry up to 1 yr older than me, but people are saying I can marry even 7-8 yrs young.... As women mature much faster compared to a guy.... Being brought up by cinema loving parents I was always told about all the behind the scene stories of the 70s 80s and 90s which peaked my own interest in Bollywood since a young age. I was very happily told about how Dimple Kapadia fell in love with Rajesh Khanna and he married her right after their film ended. And how Saira Banu grew up being a fan of Dilip Kumar and eventually her dream came true when he actually married her. What I understood after growing up is how much of this shit was romanticised by the media and fed to the people and they not just accepted rather celebrated these older men marrying small young girls who were literally in their teenages. So fucking problematic ugghh
Why is it problematic? In back then India, teenagers got married often because it wasn't as easy for everyone to go for higher studies and for women to do jobs and all. What are they supposed to do? Not grow up because you think it's icky 30-50 years in the future?

1) No matter what the age of male actors they'll always be the hero material but as female actresses age they are not considered heroine material and are pushed to take more mature roles whereas younger actresses are taken to romance these big shot heroes. 2) Also most actresses as they mature realizes that they don't want to confine themselves as the love interests of our hero and wants to do more mature roles and that's why younger actresses who are aspiring to be recognized accepts these roles.

In Samrat Prithviraj, it is kind of justified because Akshay was playing a 27 years old in the film. That is why they tried to make him look very young. Although he was a complete miscast which is another debate. Also, I think makers are taking good decisions in terms of leading actresses in his upcoming films (except SP remake). I have heard that there will be no romantic pairing of him in two of his upcoming films : "Bade Miyan Chote Miyan" and "Sankaran Nair vs The Crown".Actresses will have strong parts in these films but they will not be paired opposite Akshay.

I don't find a problem with the age gap as long as they are a legal age but I think the bigger issue is that we have come so far and no have made almost no progress in accepting young men/older women in movies. There is this semi-old Telugu movie - Bhakta Tukaram starring ANR where Sridevi plays his daughter. Later on, she played his heroine too. This is just the starting of such facts that gives me the jitters with the present pairings On the other hand, films like Cheeni Kum, De De Pyaar De (ik it's not the best movie but still), Jawaani Jaaneman either deal with the age gap matter in a sensitive matter or have cast roles of female counterparts as per the story's age demands

It's a much large problem. Why is Deepika paired opposite Saif but Deepika's husband is paired with Saif's daughter. Likewise Katrina is paired with Saif but Katrina's husband is paired with Saif's daughter. Aishwarya is paired with Anil Kapoor but Aishwarya's husband is paired with Anil's daughter. This will continue to occur till we continue to lap it up. It's good that there are discussions around it now and some actually feel it's intolerable.

I don't see anything particularly wrong in an older man having a relationship with a younger woman. Or, an older woman with a younger man for that matter! What makes it an issue is when an actor who IS and clearly LOOKS like he is in his 50s, is playing a character who is supposed to be 30! And therefore paired against a 25 year old actress, who is playing a character of her own age.

Why not turn a blind eye to the age gap? The actors are so good a normal viewer doesn't even worry about it. Also they are two spies at a high level working in the same area. It's not like Tinder where you have hundreds of people to choose from. No matter their ages, them ending up as love interests makes sense given their shared place at a high level in a lonely job

I still understand some motives behind casting Deepika or Anushka or Kareena beside the Khans. Even though they are younger, they are still hugely popular and bring a large number of audience to cinema. Also they are in their late 30s and early 40s so thats kind of okay against heroes who are 57 years old. At lease they are not baby faced 21 year olds who look like hero's daughter rather than roamntic lead. But I will never understand casting a new actress like Sai Manjrekar against Salman or Manushi against Akhshay Kumar. They are newbies. No one knows much about them and they don''t have fans which would bring audience to cinema. Then whats the point beside just adding glamour to your movie. That glamour is alright if we have to just see them on screens dancing or acting but when you add almost 60 year old actors dancing alongside them and romancing the girls who are of their daughter's age is just creepy. I appreciate the actors who are now not taking part in such movies where they have to romance such girls. Saif, specially since Sara debut, have totally changed his movie choices and not try to extend his youth by pairing up with 20 somethings. SRK is still better as his last movies were with Deepika, Anushka or Katrina. But Salman and Akshay Kumar really needs to open their eyes and look into mirror. And their fans also need a reality check to keep watching these movies

Completely agree. Bollywood should bring back actresses like Juhi, preety, Madhuri, Kajol, Rani opposite srk, amir, rhithik, Akshay, salmaan, amir (provided- good quality stories). SRK paired with Kajol recently in Dilwale in 2015 and honestly it was jarring to see them as a romantic couple now, coz it immediately reminds us that SRK is old man now, but we out of our nostalgia never want to let go of the romantic arms-expanding SRK! In Pathan he played his age and i think few crore people liked it. I don't think he will do romantic movies now. Action and content based movies only.
That's not what i felt tho. His romance with kajol was raw and real. It brought so much life to the movie, like a certain gravitas to the plot that secured my attention. If it weren't for the ridiculous patch up plans of varun dhawan, i would very much like to see kajol and srk's characters find their way back to each other on their own, like it's their love story alone. They have the chemistry for it to work.

Just that, what do you think of this- I'd much rather prefer an older actress in place of deepika in pathaan. Srk looks older in that movie too and it can sit right by the plot for him to be a hunky and charming 50 yr old, now being paired with a woman isi agent age from pakistan, just older. I would very much like that. I could narrow it down to sushmita sen, raveena tandon and shilpa shetty, anyone who can deliver the punches and bring the glamour to fit the role. I mean if an actor can do it at 50, so can an actress. We're just not used to seeing it.

Even Hollywood films have huge age gap between the male and female protagonists. Age is just a number. Love can happen at any age. Even 60 year old men have married 30 year old women. Falling in love with a person of huge age gap is not a problem but not addressing/acknowledging the age gap in the film is the actual problem.
Bachchan had no other go. He tried hard in the 90s to play the young roles but all the films bombed at the box office. Now with all the possibilities of cosmetics and CGI, superstars has that option to play young in their 60s, an opportunity that old heroes didn't had

@@TriedRefusedProductions I don't think there is even anything wrong in supporting roles. Supporting roles can often be very strong and add importance to the story as much as the lead character, the issue is more the quality of that supporting role that needs to be kept in mind when he chooses one.
I just want to point it out that the problem with Avneet and Nawaj is that most of the Indian audience have seen Avneet grow up in front of their eyes on screen. We've been seeing her since she was a little kid and we feel protective of her and it's just wierd for people to see her in this situation. I'm not saying it's right or wrong but I get where this opinion is coming from.

I think we can’t blame the older male actors for it solely as film makers cast on what they perceive will get more seats filled. If the male actors who garner huge box office numbers protested against the choice of actresses due to age that would also be seen as bad too. Taking away opportunities from young actresses to succeed. It most likely has to do a lot with who will sell more tickets.. as the actor and the actress that drives filmmakers to cast younger actresses. Who basically have different qualities that sells a movie… often it’s not the most talented and knowledgeable and nuanced actor or actress that drives ticket sales… is that unfair.. or is it how it is.. does it take a skill or charisma or personality or looks above acting skills to sell tickets. So far box office has been saying larger than life actors and pretty actresses drives sales so we see more of it. Like at a time movies about nris living lavish lives abroad sold tickets.. which has changed now to stories of Indians from India… the age gap might change too… but critics and reviewers and outside entities pushing for things that’s different from what masses want lead to Bollywood not being able to compete with south cinema… movies that did great like kgf rrr were able to put people on seats while Bollywood couldn’t.
As per my observation, due to the regressive nature in Indian Film Industry that heroines have limited shelf life, there is a constant pressure for the actresses to take up roles to stay relevant and on top of their game despite being aware and uncomfortable. Actresses like Hansika, Tamannah, Shruthi Hasan, Kajal Aggarwal who have done a round trip across all South Indian industries with almost all the top heroes are perfect examples that they want to stay relevant despite having limited roles as glam dolls in big budget movies.
However, there are some actresses who have broken this norm and excelled in their fields.
This is not regressive. It's just simply that being an action hero not every guy can do but it's very easy to find (and there's a large supply of) good-looking, young women who will happily take up a romantic role next to action hero for a chance to be famous.

The other way to look at this is that
Male Actors get supporters by the projects they have done and thus the older they are (obviously they have to be very good) will get more famous whereas female actors get famous not only because of their projects but also their beauty, so after they age, gain weight their fan base decreases. This, is how audience is and it can only change when we stop associating beauty as a measure to value someone in this field.

Fault lies in the actors and the audience not facing their heroes are aging and need to be appropriately cast in movies. We are to account as well especially this is what perpetuates this rubbish. On a lighter note I enjoyed Manmadhu 2 where the age gap in a rom com was central to the story 😊
How will you get audience to feel guilty for wanting to embrace imagination and suspend disbelief to see a guy they grew up rooting for still being strong and kicking butt and getting a good-looking girl and doing crazy stunts? Audience wants to have fun in India, they don't want to watch a boring movie where people lecture them about social issues when their life is itself one massive social issue already
Everything boils down to the acceptance by the audience. Anything goes as long as moviegoers ignore (not oblivious) the age gap. The wider Indian brain is hardwired for this and its ingrained in it's psyche (more so in the south). Have the audience reject such pairings and you will see change occurring. I requires a generational mind shift. Ain't happening soon.

I wondered this when I was watching Suryavanshi in the cinema hall that if the tip tip barsa pani song being recreated on Akshay-Raveena duo instead of adding katrina in the mix, it would have been magical and valid at the same time. Though, no doubt katrina aced the dance number, still the role also suited the timeline of the movie if Raveena Tandon had been the female opposite as she would have been the apt casting.
Amitabh didn't do it out of choice but more out of circumstance. Same with Anil Kapoor who needed a lot of convincing to sport white hair in Dil Dhadakne Do and the actresses who denied Shefali Shah's part as they didn't want to play mother to Ranveer and Priyanka.
The welcome change from choice or circumstances is still welcome! But if you get stuck in a flux like Govinda who still wants to be the desirable hero: the offers just won't pour in

My point with the circumstance was till the audience keeps supporting this there's not going to be any change from within the industry. Good that you spoke about this issue. I've felt uncomfortable about this since I was a kid. I've consciously avoided watching such movies no matter how big of a box office hit the film might be. I never understood how this (female actors cast in adult female roles as early as 13) is not child s*x**l abuse and why most Indians (male actors, their young female co-stars, and their fans) find this as something to be proud about.
This also shows the psychological side of such female actors and female fans with daddy issues, which is much more screwed up.
You have to remember that 30 years or even 20 years ago was much different time in India when public school was not available for most people and jobs for women were very less. What options were there for most women post puberty? Stay at home and have family pay for you but you can't work and can't afford school / college? It was for this reason common and even necessary many of them became adults much faster than women nowadays. Do not find it gross and uncomfortable, try to understand that time and that place, not always place everything in your situation
I just saw some thumbnails of this movie and thought maybe they are playing a father-daughter duo or some dynamic like that, and forgot to look into it further I'm genuinely shocked right now because I had more expectations in Nawazuddin Siddiqui's choices
I think tamil cinema is improving a lot because superstars like rajinikanth and kamal haasan has started to act in films which has roles according to their age and without heroine and tier 1 actors like vijay and ajith have started to act with heroines who are almost equal to their age and in movies which has story according to their age.

Not slightly uncomfortable but very. I have always found it creepy and disgusting the way these female actors when they were kids were made to romance actors, their grandfather's age. It still continues, but if you have a female actor who is a few years older than the male actor, then it's a problem.
Why is it disgusting? They would be considered kids now, but back then in a time when there was no guaranteed schooling, no jobs for women, how can you consider a 16-17 year old woman who finished school 6-7 years ago and has been living a domestic wife type life for 5 years to be a kid?

If you have seen the series "Queen" which is based on some life events of legend Jayalalitha actress, you see how she was even denied education at prestigious college , because she was an actress. Even though she was totally eligible and very qualified.
She was also subjected to many controversies about her and MGR. People talk about it still 😭.
If u see she was 17 and MGR was 48 in their first movie together.... Nobody thought that MGR needs to be questioned or any other older actor who acted with her, but her!
There have also been instances in Tamil cinema, where i have seen the male protagonist romancing a female protagonist with whom they have acted in the past as a father and daughter.. 😭 literally the actress was a baby and then woahhhh she's acting as a romantic interest after few years 🥴
Bro, there's a movie in Telugu, where Sridevi played the character of a grand daughter to Sr NTR (Badi Pantulu is the movie name), and cut to few years into the future, she was the lead heroine next to him. I think heroines should unite together and just reject offers of this sort. They can very well pick heroines of their time and age and pick stories that fit their age and maturity! Society needs so much to be told, and I'm sure today's generation is wise enough to accept any work of art. All we need is some truth, honesty and some entertainment that's all! I hope makers keep this in mind and stop falling behind mere commercial crap!
Heroines uniting together and rejecting this will lead to lots of opportunities for new actresses. The age gap between leads is also something that is seen in Indian serials too.
It's actually not that much of a gap between lead actors on tv serials actually. The age gaps are most of the times less than 15 years which isn't even creepy, but the constant age gap of more than 20-25 years between leads in almost every Bollywood movie is disturbing.

Age gap between the leads isn't always the problem. It's the story script which is often the problem. If the script itself is shitty, the actors can't always save the film inspite of their "creepy" age gaps.

I'm convinced actors in their 60 can still play action heros in a convincing way as long as the screenplay is good. Liam Neeson started to play action movies in his late 50s with the film "Taken". The hero had to save his daugther and it was a big succes!! But it's ridiculous to have a 60 year old falling in love like a teenager.

These differences are too uncomfortable to watch. And it's a fact that the chemistry is another level when two actors are in a similar age group. I don't think SRK has looked that good with younger actors. His chemistry with Kajol and Juhi chawla was another realm of romance. Similar case for Salman. I still get goosebumps watching him and Aishwarya in hum dil de chuke sanam. My favourite pairing.
But cinema somewhere reflects the reality of the society. As I am in the arranged marriage market, I can tell you that guyz won't even accept proposals of women just a few months older to them. If she is 7-8 years younger, its all cool. That's the thinking. That's what you see in popular cinema.

Being brought up by cinema loving parents I was always told about all the behind the scene stories of the 70s 80s and 90s which peaked my own interest in Bollywood since a young age. I was very happily told about how Dimple Kapadia fell in love with Rajesh Khanna and he married her right after their film ended. And how Saira Banu grew up being a fan of Dilip Kumar and eventually her dream came true when he actually married her. What I understood after growing up is how much of this shit was romanticised by the media and fed to the people and they not just accepted rather celebrated these older men marrying small young girls who were literally in their teenages. So fucking problematic ugghh
Why is it problematic? In back then India, teenagers got married often because it wasn't as easy for everyone to go for higher studies and for women to do jobs and all. What are they supposed to do? Not grow up because you think it's icky 30-50 years in the future?
The movie dilwale that came out in 2015 had srk and Kajol together and the focus was on two different pairings of similar ages that was good
I strongly believe that Nawaz should go back to OTT to revive his rapidly deteriorating career. For example, He will do a fab job in a Raj & DK web series or maybe another OTT outing with Anurag Kashyap after the iconic Sacred Games...
1) No matter what the age of male actors they'll always be the hero material but as female actresses age they are not considered heroine material and are pushed to take more mature roles whereas younger actresses are taken to romance these big shot heroes.
2) Also most actresses as they mature realizes that they don't want to confine themselves as the love interests of our hero and wants to do more mature roles and that's why younger actresses who are aspiring to be recognized accepts these roles.

In Samrat Prithviraj, it is kind of justified because Akshay was playing a 27 years old in the film. That is why they tried to make him look very young. Although he was a complete miscast which is another debate. Also, I think makers are taking good decisions in terms of leading actresses in his upcoming films (except SP remake). I have heard that there will be no romantic pairing of him in two of his upcoming films : "Bade Miyan Chote Miyan" and "Sankaran Nair vs The Crown".Actresses will have strong parts in these films but they will not be paired opposite Akshay.

This issue is more predominantly present in Hindi TV industry. Every other pair have around 15 to 20 years age gap.

I think the fimmakers should address the age gaps like it is done in movies like "Rab Ne Bana De Jodi". But those situations can work well in family oriented films, not in mass commercial cinemas which is a sad thing.👍🏼👍🏼

As a woman it feels disgusting to see Anveet Kaur who's only 21 play a role where she's made to wear certain outfits which although appropriate for her age, still feel uncomfortable to look at. The fact that she and Nawaz probably had to promote the movie in several places and had to be looked at as a couple and not a father and daughter duo is creeping me out.
Be it Salman or Akshay or Nawaz, it's honestly time for actors to either start acting their age(father roles) or have leads closer to them in age.
This also points out to another issue of women's short age in bollywood, where if you're a woman the your movie career as a lead is very short and once you're 35 or married, you'll never get lead films and even if you get they'll mostly be based on certain themes. Whereas a man's career can go on for 3 decades too.
From romancing Sridevi, to Karishma to Sonam to Disha, it's sad how Salman has managed to play the lead actor.

I don't find a problem with the age gap as long as they are a legal age but I think the bigger issue is that we have come so far and no have made almost no progress in accepting young men/older women in movies. The young women in movies have always been so beautiful and are a eye candy but as a women, I also want to see new and fresh faces, literally where are all the young hot men at lmao. This is why I can't stand the movie "De de pyaar de". it normalizes older men with younger women but our world has always accepted that pairing since ages :( The problem is why we are not getting same age couples or young men/older women pairings as well.

There is this semi-old Telugu movie - Bhakta Tukaram starring ANR where Sridevi plays his daughter. Later on, she played his heroine too. This is just the starting of such facts that gives me the jitters with the present pairings
On the other hand, films like Cheeni Kum, De De Pyaar De (ik it's not the best movie but still), Jawaani Jaaneman either deal with the age gap matter in a sensitive matter or have cast roles of female counterparts as per the story's age demands
Finally someone talking about it. It's actually very creepy to see actors in 50s working with half of their age actresses
