      I second this! I'd like to know your take on Dance Dance Dance tho, I'm still over-thinking whether I'm going to read it or not after finishing A Wild Sheep Chase ;p

      It's actually part of The Rat Series by Murakami. It's the fourth book , the first two are novellas "Hear the Wind Sing" & "Pinball, 1973", followed by "A Wild Sheep Chase" and finally "Dance Dance Dance" 👍

    I plan to read Murakami chronologically too. I have heard people saying he's a bit problematic when it comes to women characters but his later works are better. So I kind of want to notice the changes in his writing.

    • @earl-grey-milk-tea
      @earl-grey-milk-tea 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      He is indeed not that great about writing women and male character's attitudes to women! Personally I only plan on reading/revisiting his better-rated works, because I only have so much time, but it's definitely something to keep an eye out for when reading. I also think his novels are much better than his short stories!

    • @BrainFreezeWave
      @BrainFreezeWave 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeah, don't expect any deep character development in his female characters. I've read 3 of his books so far and it infuriated me sometimes

    • @jagodowypryzmat
      @jagodowypryzmat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I read a few books of him and I liked them - but it was a few years ago. I read also 'First person singular' and... I was very dissapointed, sadly. I am now curious if my taste changed or it's because of the book itself. I plan to read other his books and reread some of them, so I will check this out :)

    • @zarfeenhameed2664
      @zarfeenhameed2664 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the only Murakami book I’ve read so far is Colourless Tsukuru and although I liked it, the female characters and their development are not significant at all. I plan on reading Kafka on the shore since it’s my new book purchase and my expectations are sky high for this🤞

    • @ritatorres2894
      @ritatorres2894 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@zarfeenhameed2664 (I tried to be as vague as possible but if you don't want to know anything about Kafka on the Shore then don't read this haha) I hope you like Kafka it's such an odd story! I really enjoyed it but unfortunately it had a few sexual scenes that I found to be a little unnecessary, I guess some of them add to the whole oddness of the book but I couldn't really find an actual point to them. And, maybe apart from one female character, the others had little depth and were just there for the male characters' pleasure/"personal growth". Still, I really liked the book and would recommend it as I keep thinking about it. Hope you like it too!

I am very interested to read more but as a non native speaker, it's really hard for me to directly dive into them .So if u have time, can you do a video dedicated to that whole Greek mythology and history fictions for starters? Thoughts and Meditations from Gibran is my absolute favorite, I highly recommend it. I collect all the old hardcovers of his, blessed enough to have some first editions. I’m a big Arab literature fan, borderline obsessed honestly. You might also like The Book of Khalid by Ameen Rihani if you haven’t read it, it’s another splendid work of early 20th century American literature, its considered the “first Arab-American novel”

    I have up until this point never been much of a reader, but recently during the lock down, beyond just going back and forth to work and exercising at home, I started to get interested in sitting down, relaxing and actually reading. I have always felt forced back in high school and college, but ever since graduating college, I became very lazy in the scholastic since. So, not knowing of what to pick up first, I surfed TH-cam and came across you channel. Through your beautifully calm presentations of recommended reads I started to get the itch to delve right in. My first pick up was Snow Country (your description of it kind of reminded me of Samurai's Garden, a book I really enjoyed). Digging it so far! So thank you! I am a new subscriber, best choice I have made all year even though we are only 2 weeks in haha. Keep rockin' on! :) oh almost forgot, I’m also reading Hamnet, it’s about Hamlet’s son. Slower paced but a good little bit of history during the times of a plague.

    Hello Emma, greetings from Argentina! I just wanted to say that the book Hopscotch it´s called that way because the author wrote it so that there are two ways of reading the book, he explains this, I believe, in the first chapter. The reader can follow the chronological order of the chapters or follow the one proposed by the author "hopscotching" and in both ways it makes sense and the story acquires different meanings and results depending in which order you've read it. I hope you enjoy it!

    For Italian book recommendations, maybe try Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities and Dino Buzzati's The Tartar Steppe. The former is a poetic and dream-like discussion of cities and the sentiments they bring on people, the latter is about loneliness and feelings of uselessness and inadequacy. Maybe not particularly uplifting reads, but they are still good lol

    Hey Emma... or anyone really... could you make a video on "where to start reading" or something along those lines? I haven't read a book since high school. Because once I started college it was all textbooks and no time for fun reading. Honestly if you met someone who had never read anything but a text book. Where would you tell them to start if they are trying to become a reader? Should they start with middle grade? Classic? A popular series? Dr. Seuss? Lol. No seriously, I feel like I need to just start all the way over, I've lost all sense of literary analysis skills. Could you start a book club that you post here on TH-cam? Like maybe we all read Bunny or something together and discuss it here in the comments or something. Idk.

    • @kathrynblanco8389
      @kathrynblanco8389 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mia, I’m obviously not Emma but I definitely get where you’re coming from with not reading for fun in college. Some things that have really helped me are giving myself permission to read light, fun things, including YA, but also recognizing the ways my tastes have changed - some YA series I read in high school don’t resonate with me anymore, but I enjoy nonfiction which I didn’t used to!
      Short stories are also great, and manageable.
      If you’re looking for something to help you get back into literary analysis, I found How to Read Literature Like a Professor really useful and manageable, and if you’re looking for accessible literary fiction I recommend The House on Mango Street

    • @andraste6746
      @andraste6746 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think middle grade would be a great start. But it would depend on your tastes. The Nevermoor series is excellent. Classics may be a hard start. There’s lots of engaging contemporary and historical fiction. Do you watch movies? What kind do you like?

    Fun fact, Elena Ferrante is a pseudonym and her/his identity is kept hidden even in Italy. They can even be a man as far as we (don't) know.
    Also, talking about Italian literature I would like to recommend Novecento by Alessandro Baricco. It's short but very poetic and whimsical, right up your alley I would say.

    Not enough people on booktube talk about Against Nature. It's a completely bonkers book and after reading it I had both a bad taste in my mouth and a fascination for it, but I guess that's the point of decadent literature. Enjoy!

    Hi Emma, I just started watching your videos and I love your channel so much! I'm 14 and I really want to start reading. Do you (or anyone in the comments) so happen to have book recommendations for my age? Thank you so much, stay safe and healthy! 💖

      Hi💚 we are of the same age, I highly recommend ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen. It’s an incredible piece of work, very beautifully written and it inspired me to read more classics. Other books I recommend are:
      Little Women
      Frankenstein
      The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
      Three Men in a Boat and
      The Picture of Dorian Gray
      Happy reading!

    hi emma, i suggest u should pick up 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. I'm currently halfway of it and I'm loving it so far. like The Housekeeper and the Professor, one of the protagonist in 1Q84 named Tengo is a mathematician and also is a teacher!!! I think that's something u could relate upon, i guess. anw have a nice day!!!

      @Tanya Talwar i think imo in this particular book, subsconsciousness isn't really the main thing, nor it is related. it is just to question the two protagonists' own destiny in this world of 1Q84... although that is the real world. to put it simply, they live in the year 1984, but as the book goes on. strange things happens as if these things makes you think that you've been put into an alternate reality that differs in the world that you are in that moment.
      questions are in fact, in my opinion, are the strongest basis in this book... because it is the foundation that drives you to want to finish this book already. as Murakami himself said in this book "If you can't understand it without an explanation, you can't understand it with an explanation."
      although I admit, the first part/volume of this book is somewhat a slow-burner for me... it oftentimes have put me off because they were so much that Murakami has written that at the time, I think I didn't care at all... but as I go along with it I start to unravel all the little significance of how Murakami's world building in the first volume affects the whole story as it is... and that makes me feel so glad that I paid so much attention to those tidbits.
      Sorry if this as vague as it can get, but the best thing is to just read it. If you're an avid reader of Murakami, as 1Q84 is indeed his "masterpiece", it is highly that you should check it out.

      @Tanya Talwar that i cannot explain as of yet for i haven't finish it, however... IMO in terms of Murakami's books, i think you should not seek for the exact meanings of each and every story that he has written, because like Stephen King, Murakami likes to experiment as well, hence why some of his novels has major plot holes/cliffhangers... but the thing that drives the readers of Murakami is his ability to put so much informations about history or life meaning or his music taste or his philosophy in those works. It's like riding on a train full of information and whilst you are enjoying the ride, you are getting these fragments of informations that you can savor until you get off, and when you do get out of that train, you would think "WTF DID I JUST RIDE ON??!?!?" but clueless as you are, that's what makes you want to read more of his books.

    Hi!! I’m telling you this cause I know you’ll probably appreciate it!! I’m Argentinan and when you say “Julio Cortázar” try to not close your mouth that much, you can try exaggerating your mouth movements (lol tahts weird to say) and the pronounciation will probably be more accurate🥰🥰🥰
