I was so disorganized in the past but now I realize how much time I've wasted just setting stuff up while trying to create... thanks so much, this template is "just enough" without being over the top intense!
hmm that was strange, i wanted to give you a thumb up and twice it directed me on the youtube video quality something page.. the third time i tried it gave you a thumb up..
Extremely useful - I find it necessary to have an EQ pulled up automatically. I actually prefer the stock Ableton EQ so I can instantly see the frequency response whenever I click on a track
Nice tutorial, thank you! 💯👍🎶 I had vocals near top and kept having to scroll up... the nuances you mention, like vocals near bottom, make great sense... and good to learn about these patterns being found in studios... things like that... thanks again!
Thank you so much! I'm very new to Ableton and music production as a whole. Maybe now I can actually have a workflow and not be as overwhelmed with features ❤
Me watching this video knowing I always have and always will have my vocals at the top and drums at the bottom 👀 In all serious thought thank you! Great video. I've worked without templates forever, and know that I make songs slowly. Want to find ways to speed up my workflow!
Watched this video seem like 1000 times, kept starting and stopping and then looking for plugins and trying to get my midi controller to work with vst. needless to say I'm pressing save on my Template now. Thanks again for the video. MPK
I did learn and i'm very thankful for this!! been toying with ableton throughout the years and found that my writers block always got stuck with me building the format of each song. I never thought to make a template. I'm about to just that RN. TY
ill be switching to ableton and this is exactly what i was looking for. have similar setup in my old daw and want to familiarize with ableton as quickly as possible.
Rarely if ever comment on vids but I'm constantly changing my templates adding weird and wonderful things I never use and and this was legit the the most flexible template I've made.great video
Used correctly the Fabfilter Pro-L can do things the ableton limiter can not compete with. The ableton limiter is only good for convenience and saving CPU power.
New Ableton user here, longtime Logic user that decided to make a switch, the differences between the two are huge workflow-wise. So this video was great for me just getting started, I feel like learning to ride a bike all over again! 🤣 Any chance of going deeper into building this template up with another video? Like you I also want to have things neat and organized, have a "base" setup as a good starting point for each session. I liked the way you set things up, the thoughts on how and why. Anywho, great video! thanks a bunch 👍👍👍👍👍
Just a note... You must have had one of the more latency inducing styles (Modern, Aggressive, Bus) activated on Pro-L2 and maybe even 2x oversampling and True Peak limiting as well. Turn on "Transparent, Punchy or All Around" and you get ~10ms, which to me is totally fine to play with.
Correct, the modes you mentioned are indeed around the 10ms range, I find that amount totally usable for general production, but I prefer having the absolute lowest latency possible while tracking. I usually switch to Pro-L once all the tracking is done.
Like, sub'd, and notifications on. Looking forwards to seeing where you take me on my Ableton journey. The default template walkthrough bodes well for our future, I feel. 😁 Cornwall, UK.
I think you could improve the thumbnail!!! The video is packed with so good information. But i wasn't the first i click. Dint call attention. But is a great video !!!
If you have trouble finding a low-latency limiter just go pick up a clipper (g-clip, free clip, etc) and use that instead. As long as you don't push into it too much it will work similarly with 0 latency
I LOVE THIS. But I did get lost on one part. I set up those Drum Midi tracks, but how do you use them? I created this entire pattern but I can't drag a sample onto the midi. Ideally I'd want to easily swap out different samples but keep the same drum pattern. Wouldn't it be much easier to just use a Drum Rack instead of 4 midi tracks? Is there an easy solution that I'm just not seeing? Thank you!
You should be able to draft the sample right into the midi track, in the device section. I prefer not to use all-in-one drum racks as they can limit mixing flexibility.
@@cglessman another great tip: put a drumrack into the midi channel, put your 128 favorite drum sounds (i.e. all your claps) on the cells, then put a midi pitch device before the drumrack. now you switch through your drum sounds by changing the pitch.
hey Rave....I was about to create a template, but it bored me, because I didn't know certain parameters, but I am glad I found your video, as an ableton user this video helped me a lot, fucking susbcribed xD, how is it possible that you only have these subs, help this man to be recognized please :D
i just reread your reply...initially i didn't respond, but will this time...off hand that it may have been...in my case i'm well beyond the joke, but imagine for a moment someone is watching and they're really just getting started...the responsibility on people purporting to be knowledgeable on a subject is to reveat clearly and truthfully without an 'attitude of this is beneath me'...that's why i picked up on the offhand joke....demeaning those moving into either home recording or music producing as a profession isn't the responsible way to go about educating. it may have been a ''oh i've been doing this for years'' joke to you, but imagine for a moment a person who's just bought theiri first soundcard and they're only getting started in the world of i/o...it's a minefield of confusion and the offhand joke just added further to it....@@TheRaveBarn
Bro! I have been using Ableton for about 15 years and I didn't know that record was mapped to F9! I might have half known it long ago and it go garbled up in all the shortcuts I know for different DAWs, but still...Thank you! Always learning.
cool vid, but I rarely find myself using templates even if its one I created. I prefer making custom audio fx racks, midi fx racks, and instrument racks instead. Each and every Track you make is going to be unique in the way you mix it, automate it, etc etc. I find making racks instead makes things more versatile. I also prefer to bus everything or use sends (same thing almost) and the bus channels/send channels are almost always unique for each track. Its good to know why you're doing something and how to do something instead of using a "hamburger helper" preset or template or whatever etc etc. Learn what the fx do and your music making process will be much faster and much less wasted time fooling around. another reason I'm not into templates is this... most producers tend to focus on only arrangement view or only session view. Personally I use both arrangement and session when I make tracks. I like having my parts layed out in session view into scenes because it makes it much easier to make remixes/edits and its awesome to have scenes if you're performing live
I agree, major oversight from Ableton. Maybe Ableton 12 will have this, I don't see it in the release notes, but it might get implemented before the official release 🤞
when he said set volume fader to -12 I stopped watching. use gain on channels instead keep the faders at 0 or close to zero because the more you are far away from zero it will be harder to control the levels. its not linear guys. this is just incorrect. just sayingl.
Incorrect? I think not. There are no rules in music, just preferences. Pro Tools for instance, gives users +12dB of fader to work with, while ableton only goes to +6. By setting the faders to -12dB, I now have +18dB to work with, is it a more coarse control at -12db? Yes, but it hasn't caused me an issues personally and I like the extra room to boost, this isn't a mixing template where +-0.5dB makes a huge difference, it's a production template for fast translation of ideas. Having to navigate to the channel effects and adjust a gain pot because the fader is out of room (for instance when working with a very quiet VST preset) is much slower than just boosting on a fader. I typically don't mix in Ableton anyway, Pro Tools is my preferred DAW for that use and my attention to gain staging is much more detailed in my mix template. I've had over 150 million streams with the faders defaulted to -12dB as set out in this video, so it don't think it's an issue.
BRO ARE YOU KIRMIT THE FROG?

yeah
I'll be releasing the template (and some others) soon, stay tuned!
New sub!!! Now that I’m getting a little better on AL coming from LPX I’ll have to use this to create my own template!!!
Thank you buddy! I'm new to working in DAW's in general and this really helped me to get started on new projects!
This was a nice watch. Any reason you didnt do the - 12db thing on the midi tracks?
Good question. On a blank midi track you can't adjust the volume. It's not really a problem for my workflow though, I just adjust it on the fly.

The reference track should talk some record from computer(guess) or idk lol , idk why it should change the ext out ?
It needs to be ext out so it bypasses any effects on the master bus.
