@@blobbymagee6138 I think that is a good move also… looks like Black’s best could be h6. And White will most likely end up with a good Kingside attack against Black.
Agreed, 4...Nxe4 is a huge gamble. It's true that 5. Bxf7+ is the only good response, but it's a fairly obvious move, forcing the Black king to move to an awkward square. Stockfish assesses the position as +2 after 5. Bxf7+ Ke7 6. d4 h6 7. Nxe4 Kxf7 8. d5. Too risky for a serious game.
Of course , after White plays for Fried Liver Attack with 4. Ng5 The opponent is expecting 4. d5, the normal line. I have never considered 3.Nxe4, but will play it now for sure. Thank you Igor.
Thank you for this video. This honestly changes the way I see chess. For me I never would even think of playing the knight to take the pawn . I need to think of these off the wall things
love this! I play e4 as white but go for the vienna. a lot of the black ideas here are similar to the white side of a vienna with a move behind, but much of the time that doesnt matter too much because the right moves are very hard to find for white. The beauty of all this lark is that many of white's mistakes are natural moves that will actually get played. Possibly unwise against alpha zero, though :)
this is called the Ponziani-Steininz Gambit, but it fails after Bxf7+ Ke7 d4 and now if Nxg5 white has Bxg5+, huge skewer and after Kxf7 black loses the queen
3:04 Actually,if the white plays queen to e2,then black is in big trouble as the queen and knight are wide open, and if black saves his rook, then white can castle, and black has just wasted moves.Further more, after white castles,he can play pawn to g3,attacking your queen, and if your queen retreats,it cannot protect the knight any longer and the queen will just gobble up the knight and win a 3point advantage
Thanks, that's interesting. Can't black in anticipation of this retreat the knight to e7 after white castles, attacking the knight and the bishop and adding an attack on the Bishop with the queen? Then you should still be fine - to optimal, but fine - after whatever happens (knight exchange, or black queen takes bishop and queen exchange)
GM Ben Finegold, the infamous, shares that his colleague teaches his beginner students to play Nxe4 when they get hit with Ng5 because they forgot to start with Bc5 to avoid Ng5. Thanks for showing why!
This line is just completely losing after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 Nxe4 5. Bxf7+ Ke7 6. d4. It's +3.8 for white, only play this trap against weak players.
Although my stockfish shows even +5 after couple of moves, I think it's not that bad in reality. Black is exchange down but has a bishop pair, so there are chances...
@@duchymor There are certainly chances but if white is a strong player or, has seen/studied this line before, then the odds are heavily against black's favour.
Agreed, but that's kind of what makes it an opening trap. Black doesn't have a natural advantage, but when the players get into this line, white has to play the bishop check and then find (the unnatural-looking) d4, or white will be crushed. Most weak players won't find the only move (d4) that doesn't lose. If they DO find it, black is indeed in trouble.
On the line that the bishop takes the pawn on F7 (08:20) black is losing. After the white's knight takes the the black knight on E4 and the black king takes the bishop on F7, the most logical move which is also the best move is queen to F3 check. The black king must retreat to E8, than the white knight jumps to C3. Pawn to E5 for kicking the knight is no longer an option because it can be captured by the knight. Queen cannot capture the knight back because she will fall. Anyways, very bad line for black if whites decides to capture the pawn on F7 by the bishop.
Most of the TH-camrs, show black burne shilling gambit against Italian Opening. It's very very common now a days. But, this strategy is Superb 👍 against Italian Opening. Hope to see more strategies and tactics like this from you Sir. Thanks a lot 😀🙏
very good video! ive been using it myself a little but i ran into a problem after bxf7 , ke7 . you say he has to play bxe4 but Ive check it with my father and the engine and if d3 or expecially d4 is being played you are just loosing as black. I know this might be hard to spot for people, expeccially in lower elo and lower time formats but it is a flaw with this opening.
This video changes everything. I just cant quite hold onto above 1400 due to losses playing black pieces. I feel tis may change. Thank you for the video.
min. 5,38 what happens if white plays Qe2 instead of Qf3, if Nd4 g3, black Queen moves, QxNe4. If gxQh4, NxQe2, NxRh8,NxBc1,d3 Thanks for any explanation/correction
If you are playing white, you don't need to fear this line. Here is how to play it: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nc6 4.Nf6 Ng5 5.Bxf7+ Ke7, then (drum roll ...) 6.d4! Igor is so fond of saying "to take is a mistake," and here is a prime example. White is fine as long as he doesn't take on e4. In 60% of the games in the lichess database, black says, "If he won't grab my knight, I will grab his." Monsterous mistake! After 6... Nxg5, Bxg5+ skewers the queen! It is a very interesting situation; either player will lose if they play NxN. Black's best is 6...h6, kicking the knight, although white can safely play Nxe4 after the pawn is pushed to d4. After 7.Nxe4 Kxf7 8.d5. Black can try Nd4, but c3 will send him away. Best is Ne7. After (recapping here) 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nc6 4.Nf6 Ng5 5.Bxf7+ Ke7 6.d4 h6 7.Nxe4 Kxf7 8.d5 Ne7, black has the slightest of edge in material, having traded his knight for a bishop, but his position is quite constrained, while white's is open, with various possibilities for continuation. Stockfish recommends e6, forcing the exchange in order to save the knight, but if that is too aggressive for you, O-O, c4, f4, and Nc3 are all good options that leave white ahead anywhere from +1.7 to +2.7, according to Stockfish.

The key move for white in these positions is d4. In the Bxf7+ line, instead of 8. d3, white should play 8. d4. This looks odd as when the black knight lands on d4 it will now win a pawn. But the open d file will be compensation. But even better is to play 6. d4 as in the game Green-Potapov. Finally, anyone interested in playing this line as black should check out games from both Alexander Potapov and Ivan Kuhlmann Nogueira, who have both used it at a fairly high (>2200) level.
I can not stress enough how great full I am for your video. An opponent of mine typically plays the bishop opening, of course I'm looking for new ways to counter his opening
B:f7+ ke7 , d3... Can't take on g5 cause bishop takes and loses the queen. Night moves to f6 bishop runs away to c4/b3 and zero justification for the king being on e7.
At 09:45 you forgot about Knight to E4 which attacks the Queen and stops our threatening to hit on C2 with the Knight, cause White can castle now, but very cool video :)
4...Nxe4 ??! is interesting and your variations after that as well...thx for that !!...the downside though is that 4...Nxe4 ??! is highly dubios according to my decent 2-3 hours analysis with a SF-derivative engine...the best line i found for black is this: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 Nxe4 5. Bxf7+ Ke7 6. d4 h6 7. Nxe4 Kxf7 8. d5 Ne7 9. d6 cxd6 10. Nxd6+ Kg8 11. Nc3 Nc6 12. Qd5+ Kh7 13. Nf7 Qe8 14. O-O d6 15. Qe4+ Kg8 16. Nxh8 Kxh8 17. f4 Bd7 18. Rd8 +-... according to my around 30 years of experience in computerchess id assume that blacks drawing chances are around 0.1 % maybe...anyway, id not like to count my mistakes id have made by myself ;-)
This is so true. I had to put the Bxf7 into komodo analysis as well and i agree with you above, that on move six, white is not obliged to take on Nxe4 but can simply play d3 or d4 supporting his g5N while black is somehow forced to play h6 on the next move, kicking the N away to take the f7 bishop, otherwise, the B returns on b3 and things are pretty scary for black. I didn't let the engine go that far away on mvoe 24..25 as the 1.20+ for white did not seem to change. I would agree that you can have some serious blitz or bullet fun with the var but someone prepared will only have to prepare one line and that is bxf7, rememebr to play d4 or d3 on move six and keep on the advantage. If there was a move to make two knights defense unbeatable, like 4...Nxe4 all other theory on d5...Na4 or even Nd4 would go bye bye. Nice try though and i repeat very funny on blitz-bullet mode. I will definately try it.
At 11:15, knight does not retreat. It takes pawn, bishop takes knight and white Queen takes pawn at d5. Three pawns for a knight and the game is even pointwise. White's pawn structure is solid and black king has NO protection. These novelty moves don't work at higher levels.
I think there's a flaw at 7:18. Instead of white pawn to g3 why not white knight d6 check after black rook moves threatening white knight? Knight would be taken because of check, then queen takes black rook. Checkmate utilizing white bishop. ❤😊
Black is completely lost in this line. So much analysis for just a cheap trap. This definitely casts a shadow on the whole master class. Analysis should be honest and not wishful thinking.
Coach Igor have you tried playing with IM Roderick Nava? I know you're a GM I learned SOOOOOO MUCH ABOUT CHESS BECAUSE OF YOU ❤️❤️❤️❤️🎉🎉🎉🎉 THANK YOU , THANK YOU VERY MUCH - from the PHILIPPINES
Great video. I already won an online game based on this video. After some analysis, I still think white can maintain an upper hand after taking f7 pawn with the bishop, King e7 followed by d4 pawn. This will try and unleash the dark-squared bishop. Bxf7, Ke7, d4. You have to play h6 to kick out the knight. Following that while will have to exchange the knight for the light-squared bishop. But, the black king is exposed. So how does one play this? Any thoughts.

That's why it's a gambit
@@hugo57k91 When it works, it's a gambit. When it loses horribly, "what the hell were you thinking?"
I love your commentary. Keep it up Igor.
Thank you!
Of course , after White plays for Fried Liver Attack with 4. Ng5 The opponent is expecting 4. d5, the normal line. I have never considered 3.Nxe4, but will play it now for sure. Thank you Igor.
Really great information. Thank you !
Glad it was helpful!
At 12:08 , knight and queen double check leads to checkmate by white. Best reply for better position
Love your videso Igor.Where can I buy your instructional videos?
Thanks for your interest. You can find them here.

Thank you for this video. This honestly changes the way I see chess. For me I never would even think of playing the knight to take the pawn . I need to think of these off the wall things
But this is not at all a solid opening if white plays d4 after Ke7, you're losing big time.
That's great! Thanks.
You're welcome!
Wow! This is great teaching. I like these trap-setting moves. Very educational. You go, Igor!
Many options offered ! Thanks
You're welcome!
This is one of my favorite video on YT! Loved luv lov it! Thank you for this great video!
This is the most interesting video I have ever watched on TH-cam about chess till now, thinks a lot.
this is called the Ponziani-Steininz Gambit, but it fails after Bxf7+ Ke7 d4 and now if Nxg5 white has Bxg5+, huge skewer and after Kxf7 black loses the queen
Most of the time you upload videos of chess traps. I really like it.
Glad that you like our videos! Please do like, share, and subscribe if not done already.
great video, how do you respond to Qe2 to prevent checkmate?
great coverage gm...all the best
The last line is totally awesome 🎉.
Thank you Sir..another helpful to lesson.
I'm not new to chess but i have a difficult time to improve. This help me a lot. Thank you so much
3:04 Actually,if the white plays queen to e2,then black is in big trouble as the queen and knight are wide open, and if black saves his rook, then white can castle, and black has just wasted moves.Further more, after white castles,he can play pawn to g3,attacking your queen, and if your queen retreats,it cannot protect the knight any longer and the queen will just gobble up the knight and win a 3point advantage
My goodness! It's beautiful! I think I like the Traxler better, but this is super nice too.
GM Ben Finegold, the infamous, shares that his colleague teaches his beginner students to play Nxe4 when they get hit with Ng5 because they forgot to start with Bc5 to avoid Ng5. Thanks for showing why!
Wonderful video mate !!
This line is just completely losing after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 Nxe4 5. Bxf7+ Ke7 6. d4. It's +3.8 for white, only play this trap against weak players.
I like a lot the way how he explained, but you are completely right.
Although my stockfish shows even +5 after couple of moves, I think it's not that bad in reality. Black is exchange down but has a bishop pair, so there are chances...
Thankyou
@@duchymor There are certainly chances but if white is a strong player or, has seen/studied this line before, then the odds are heavily against black's favour.
Agreed, but that's kind of what makes it an opening trap. Black doesn't have a natural advantage, but when the players get into this line, white has to play the bishop check and then find (the unnatural-looking) d4, or white will be crushed. Most weak players won't find the only move (d4) that doesn't lose. If they DO find it, black is indeed in trouble.
That smile at 3:18...gosh...made my day👍🤣🤣❤❤❤👌
Really needed, thanks alot ❤️
Most welcome!
Thank you. I was always confused about Black's openings
I love your videos and tactics, just wish I could recall them when I need them.
Thanks for your comment! You'll be able to incorporate them in your games through consistent practice, good luck!
Use an app like FishDroid or similar. Enter all those moves into one game and it's super easy to practice after that.
Most of the TH-camrs, show black burne shilling gambit against Italian Opening. It's very very common now a days. But, this strategy is Superb 👍 against Italian Opening. Hope to see more strategies and tactics like this from you Sir. Thanks a lot 😀🙏

very very beautiful video sir...thanks a lot
So nice Thanks
very good video! ive been using it myself a little but i ran into a problem after bxf7 , ke7 . you say he has to play bxe4 but Ive check it with my father and the engine and if d3 or expecially d4 is being played you are just loosing as black.
If gxQh4, NxQe2, NxRh8,NxBc1,d3
Thanks for any explanation/correction
Best channel for chess👏🏼
Wow, thanks!
If you are playing white, you don't need to fear this line. Here is how to play it:
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nc6 4.Nf6 Ng5 5.Bxf7+ Ke7, then (drum roll ...) 6.d4!
I got to 1500 elo with the tactics you taught us for totally free. So thank you so much sir. Now looking forward to some lessons for more advance level elo games so i can push further. You already helped me develop so much... So i wont demand anything more but put on a request as one of your fellow students that you make a video on some advance openings now to help 1500+ players specifically
Great to hear, Mushfique. Congrats on getting to 1500 ELO. Igor has a free masterclass that will help you to push your rating even more. You can find it below.

Finally, anyone interested in playing this line as black should check out games from both Alexander Potapov and Ivan Kuhlmann Nogueira, who have both used it at a fairly high (>2200) level.
ty for this great lesson.
Brilliant lesson.
This was not what I expected!!! It was absolutely blasting!
Thank you for the in-site; I am going to try this...starting today.
I can not stress enough how great full I am for your video.
An opponent of mine typically plays the bishop opening, of course I'm looking for new ways to counter his opening
i would like to know how this goes for ya in your next game!

You're welcome! Glad you like our videos
Hi, great video. In the last example. How about white plays bf7, black moves the king and white follows with d3? How to defend that one? Thanks
Thanks coach for this
After 4. ... Nxe4 5. Bxf7+ Ke7, just play 6. d4 and black looses. That opens up the bishop for a queen skewer.
Thanks very much Sir
Note to self, when white knight comes down for pin on F7 in the fried liver, go into Traxler with Queen since black knight is already set up for it.
WoW! Thank you, GM Igor Smirnov! Heavy Artillery to win the battle vs. White's e4 opening!
Thanks 👍
Excellent👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks this is very helpful
Glad to hear that!
4...Nxe4 ??! is interesting and your variations after that as well...thx for that !!...the downside though is that 4...Nxe4 ??! is highly dubios according to my decent 2-3 hours analysis with a SF-derivative engine...the best line i found for black is this:
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 Nxe4 5. Bxf7+ Ke7 6. d4 h6 7. Nxe4
Kxf7 8. d5 Ne7 9. d6 cxd6 10. Nxd6+ Kg8 11. Nc3 Nc6 12. Qd5+ Kh7 13. Nf7
Qe8 14. O-O d6 15. Qe4+ Kg8 16. Nxh8 Kxh8 17. f4 Bd7 18. Be3 Ne7 19. fxe5
Bc6 20. Qg4 dxe5 21. Rad1 Qg6 22. Qxg6 Nxg6 23. Rf2 Kg8 24. Rfd2 Nh4 25.
Rd8 +-...
according to my around 30 years of experience in computerchess id assume that blacks drawing chances are around 0.1 % maybe...anyway, id not like to count my mistakes id have made by myself ;-)
Thanks very much. This is wonderful, as is so much of your other content.
Glad you enjoy it!
My mind is literally blowing up ! Thank you :)
Your video are the most interesting chess videos on TH-cam!
awesome video! direct to the point ;)
At 11:15, knight does not retreat. It takes pawn, bishop takes knight and white Queen takes pawn at d5. Three pawns for a knight and the game is even pointwise. White's pawn structure is solid and black king has NO protection. These novelty moves don't work at higher levels.
Awesome tips!
I think there's a flaw at 7:18. Instead of white pawn to g3 why not white knight d6 check after black rook moves threatening white knight? Knight would be taken because of check, then queen takes black rook. Checkmate utilizing white bishop. ❤😊
Great video thanks, really well explained and great lines.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Great thanks
Thank you 🙏
This is great. Play against this alot. Sure it will come in handy and is worth a rewatch after some testing.
Unfortunately, d3 or d4 after Bxf7+ Ke7 and white is completely winning
And than h6! After that white knight & bishop, both, are in trouble. Nf6 is still not bad, too.
@@aleksandaraleksovski2423 after h6, pxN, and black cannot capture knight.
@@lastnewsnetwork6299 After d3:e4, than h:g5. Simple trading of knights. And Bishop is still under attack by black King.
@@aleksandaraleksovski2423 Bxg5+ wins Queen
Black is completely lost in this line. So much analysis for just a cheap trap. This definitely casts a shadow on the whole master class. Analysis should be honest and not wishful thinking.
Igor, this is wonderful stuff. Can you please post a video how to defend the scotch Gambit as black. The tips and tricks in it ?? Thank you in advance
Thanks for the suggestion
Wow awesome!! Thanks master :)
This is the engine line. White is simply better because the black king cannot castle anymore
Nice video dude. very interesting. Thank you :)
