The problem with Kemba is that he isn’t even helping that much offensively to make up for the bad defense
So well said. Like I can take a steph curry being subpar on defense if he putting up 9 threes and 40 points

I like the move. As a Knicks fan, I have to say, our defense was much better last year, and adding Kemba was going to help our offense a lot, but he's had some bad nights, and we kind of just fumbled our way through some wins. 4th seed last year, 7th now, and yes the East is a lot more loaded than it was, but we're supposed to be getting better and we haven't been
Go back and watch his defense. This guy's defense was abysmal.
kemba is like a worse burks quickley d rose..he just does not fit their already small team cause rj and fournier are small for playing small ball pf and are not true sf size either....both being sgs....they need to trade kemba for a terrence ross like wing

@Asmosis Jones Kemba isn’t playing that bad his mins are just low bc he’s a defensive liability he’s had some bad games but he hasn’t been that bad to take him out rotation thibs is just known for playing players for defense

@Larry Keys your not too bright are ya buddy
@Larry Keys idk how you’re confused
Kemba averaged a career low in minutes and usage this year. How many points did you expect//
@Larry Keys ehm
@Larry Keys
Exactly. They shouldn't expect Kemba to be the team's leading scorer or even the #2 scorer at his age, especially when they have scorers like Randle and Barrett. Walker should be averaging at least 15 though.
Shaq is right, this is why this should have gone all out for a player like Lonzo.
yeah ins't he 6'6
lonzo and caruso instead of fournier and kemba would of been perfect for the knicks plus they could of afforded a solid third guy in free agency too

As a Knicks fan, this is just Thibs being stubborn as usual. You have 3 guys who can play PG but you wanna play Burks. Toppin is literally the only player who hasn't regressed this year and he doesn't get minutes. That's on coaching.
At this point in his career, I think he would be a great 6th man. Give him the green light to fire away on the second unit, I still believe he's better than most teams secondary point guards
“If you play hard every night you’ll win 40 games, that’s their ceiling”. I’m a Knicks fan and the truths hurt
So bad bro
The problem with the Knicks is that they dont have an elite guard. And no. DRose isnt that as he's essentially near retirement.
Plus/minus isn’t just about defense. The plus/minus reflects how that player did while they’re on the court. The Knicks do bad when Kamba is on the court. Plain and simple.
But when he's on the court he doesn't take every shot on every posession, he doesn't defend every player on the floor. So, that stat is not 100% under his control. It's a team game.
@@jesuscespedes30 no doubt. He is also a part of the team. I’m sure there are others on the team with a bad plus or minus. But they kept saying it was just the defensive side of the ball that he wasn’t playing well. He is an offensive liability as well as a defensive. But you’re right, it’s not just him.
The chemistry aspect and the idea that Kemba isn’t as good as Rose or Burks on the Team is the major factor in that plus minus number.
It's not just him, but he's the easiest to replace. Burks came in and already played PG better then Kemba on both sides of the ball.
No, it reflects how well the TEAM did while that particular player was on the floor, which is misleading, because there are 5 players on the floor at any given time, so you can't really judge a player based on how well the team does overall when he's playing - he could be playing great, but two or three of the others aren't, so that wouldn't be his fault if the team was outscored while he was on the floor. I've seen players with a line of 25/8/5 on 50% shooting get a -10 and then players with a line of 2/1/1 on 0 for 3 shooting get a +12.
“They didn’t know he was 6 ft tall when they got him?” 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yeah, it's not exactly rocket science and it was a shame to see these players trying to cover for Kemba's shortcomings. The Knicks rolled the dice hoping Kemba had enough left in the tank so that a combo of Kemba and Rose could get them by this season, but they guessed wrong. At least Thibs had the good sense to make a move early in the season instead of waiting like he did last year with Payton.

Hi Chuck! Good to see you back sir! 🙋♂️
This looks like the Thibs effect. He gets the best out of his players the first couple of years he coaches them and then burns them out. It happened in Chicago, Minnesota and now it may be happening in New York.
Also Shaq is right, which makes you wonder why the Knicks picked up Walker. He is not a a Thibs kind of player. When Knicks picked him up, I was shocked that they would take a guy who is not an active defender.
Give it some time. This is a young Knicks team that has the potential to bounce back from resilience. I may be bias because I am a Knicks fan, but there’s no evidence yet since it’s only been a bit more than a year so far
Kemba just joined this year?

Will you gentlemen talk about what you think about the first half if Kemba is not the issue on defense and or for the plus minus?
This is the same issue Boston had with Kemba. When he’s scoring he’s great but when he’s struggling he’s offensively you can’t play him cause he’s a black hole on defense. Defenses look to attack him constantly on pick and rolls

Kemba will never be the same he once was. Nagging injuries from Charlotte is still following and hurting him till today. Good player but true facts, Tracy McGrady went through the same thing. Great talent but those little injuries added up. So sad!
Yet he averaged 20 the past 3 years in Boston
@@freddycalipari4242 True but his game is declining rapidly.
Kemba never been the star since he left hornets
That’s because the best players on the worst teams sometimes look really good. And when you pair them with other great players they can’t offer the same production on better efficiency.
There was a reason the Hornets didn't want to pay him a max contract and just let him walk.
@@vitocarlucci1114 Facts.
@@worldtree2027 Plus he was the type of guard to dribble for half the shot clock and move around. On better teams that won't work, and without that he can't get in a rhythm. He needs to dribble the ball alot and be featured to really be effective.
i love these guys but surely they need to undergo some sort of basic lesson or course or revisit their stats101 class or something. Plus/Minus is what it says on the tin. Kemba's offense was at such a level previously in his career that it meant he could get away with being a liability resulting in an acceptable plus minus. Now on the Knicks he stinks offensively in terms of efficiency, as he just is a bad fit. And additionally he is still awful defensively. Two effects compound one another = stinky overall game. Almost feel like some of these guys are scared of actually criticising or commending such a move. Fair play to coach. Maybe not the smartest move in terms of maintaining trade value but it doesn't matter - men lie, women lie, numbers don't.
Kemba is liked by a lot of people in the NBA, including media. They clearly don't want to kick Kemba while he's down.
Chuck is also the guy who has full compilations of him saying he hates analytics. I agree with you but they’re only gonna go off what they think should be happening, regardless of stats
Well said.
Kemba is washed. He’s got chronically bad knees and he was on a huge contract that two teams wanted no part of. The Knicks got him for nothing and he didn’t work. The numbers point to him being the weakest link in every lineup he plays in. Just acknowledge the obvious.
Facts. According to Richie at Knicks Central, there are teams wanting Kemba's services. Go figure.
yeah last year he was washed by the end of the bubble
So I guess you wanted John Wall?
And his confidence is gone also. So if he gets decently healthy he would need to be on a team that allows him to be himself. I'm just not sure that team exists anymore.
Easier said than done. Unless you have either your whole life to achieve something you love this deeply, you can’t understand; clearly you don’t get it.
Thibs coached teams that had Nate Robinson and DJ Augustin as his starting PG, and they were still Top 5 defensively.
Ty I’m reading all these guys parrot the same talking points. The Celtics were also a good defensive squad with kemba good coaches know how to hide small guards. Kemba didn’t suddenly fall off a cliff he didn’t get an opportunity
10pt 3steals 7ast. 2-3reb is solid. And you can still be offensive no excuses. There's defensive player that do it greater stop it. Play the game. I gave it all on the line just to sweat and a Gatorade while they mills. Go to work
That plus minus isnt fair to Kemba also. That’s such a small sample size plus he’s new to the system
You know these nerds don’t care about sample sizes. He’s played a career low in minutes and in diff lineup combination that star means nothing thus early
Dr. O’Neal doesn’t know the difference between a graph and a chart 😂💀
The reality is while Kemba isn't the only problem, but he's the easiest to replace. They have a plethora of offensive guards they can play that somewhat better defensively than he is.
“If you coach differently you might also have a different result” - wow amazing insight Kenny
I guess his point went right over your head. 😂😂
My guess is!!! The front office wanted Kemba, and "Thibs" just went along with it. It's no secret Kemba's a liability on defense. you are only 20 games in, and you give up on him already... Kemba is not a "Thibs" type of player. This is on the front office!!!!
I feel like the knicks just overachieved last year, and this year guys like randle have come down to the norm efficiency wise. Kemba wasn’t good in Boston and Fournier doesn’t move the needle. Knicks just need to find a way to get high end talent. Easier said than done
If kemba couldn’t succeed with tatum and brown in boston he won’t succeed with Julius “Mid” Randle
Well to be fair Randle has a window and that window is closing for him being a franchise player. I think Randle didn't work on his weaknesses players now know how to guard Randle and I think this off-season he didn't work on those parts at all or at least not as much because he is struggling. At this point it falls on RJ Barret but also him he doesn't look like a player that didn't upgrade much this off-season he has had flashes this season though. Also a team can't be a contender if they rely on a vet like Derrick Rose to be the D.Rose of the bulls he has game still but they expect a lot of him and that bench when the starting lineup is not that good.
My boy Caruso gonna win dpoy coming off the bench go Bulls😎😎

Kemba hasnt fully healed his legs is still bad
Oh my god did Kenny line up that peach fuzz?? 💀💀💀
I respect Tom for this
Kemba is a backup now. He's just too small and too slow.
Everybody had great points. Really great segment. Maybe one of the best just Basketball related.
Ernie is the man. I love this show!
I was glad kemba left the Celtics and now he’s also doing bad with the knicks the guy just won’t fit anywhere
Ironically enough, according to Richie at Knicks Central there are teams still interested in Kemba.
To be honest, I am sure that his left knee is still not fixed. He is not as quick and explosive as before, he is probably playing injured all the time and worried to aggravate his knee. He has never really been a good defender even when healthy, and he has now lost a big chunk of his offense, it just makes sense for him to come off the bench and load manage his knee as much as he can. Unfortunately, we might never get back the Kemba, pre-knee injury.
These takes are horrendous. Literally nobody said Kemba is the only problem the team is dealing with, but it's a fact we're better with him not playing. Kemba's ONLY production is to score 20 and give up 30 or score 4 and give up 30. He can't create shots for other guys, he can't defend a signpost, and he can't score around the basket anymore because of his knees.
Yea and plus minus actually does matter, I love Shaq and Chuck but I don’t understand why they refuse to believe in more advanced stats because they do effect the game
@@heatseeka4468 it’s more of they played the game for the love of the game and not for analytics
@@heatseeka4468 it doesn’t matter. It’s an arbitrary star for basketball philosophers.
I think the Knicks when they got Kemba they thought that they had enough defense to compensate for his lack of defensive skills. Stature has nothing to do with defense. Some of the best defenders in the NBA were small, Stockton, AI, Mugsy Bogues, etc. Here is the issue that none of them mentioned. He is a scorer that is not scoring. It doesn’t matter if he doesn’t play defense, if he was scoring 18-22 ppg he would still be in the starting lineup. I am 99.9% sure that Thibodeau would not care about defense that much if he was the normal Kemba…sadly he is not.
Facts
The problem with Kemba is that he needs a lot of minutes to be efficient unlike good role/bench players where you play them for 10 minutes and will give you something like 4pts 3reb 1ass 1stl. Plus energy and enthusiasm
Lol you can say the same about Randle
No. He is a turnstile on defense and isn't that offensive guy that puts bigger guys on skates anymore. He can't get by his man anymore consistently. Making him just a catch and shoot guy who isn't that good at that either.
To Kenny’s point, that’s why adjusted plus minus is seen as more useful because you adjust for who else is on the floor or not on the floor with you. Obviously it still doesn’t tell you everything, but no stat does.
Kenny and his I'm Smart glasses...lol. It's a sight hard to get used to
Shaq is 100% right about kemba in Tibs system. Couldn’t have said it better
Kemba was a consistent all star since 17 or 18. Who would've thought that he's at the point of possibly playing overseas after 1 bad season
He’s not playing overseas he just needs to be a sixth man with a better team. There’s no way he would end up out of the league completely
Walker simply shouldn’t be starting. These players need to get over inflated egos. Walker should do what he can to improve the second team.
0:46 I guarantee this will be a Neat-O stat of the night. Similar on how he says Marc and Pau Gasol’s names
The problem with Kemba is his offense is not offsetting his lack of defense. If he were getting us 15 and 7 a night which he is easily capable of getting, the Knicks would be in a much better position. A lot of that has to do with coaching.
Knicks have a great team. Noel and Randle are formidable. They have pocket shooters with Fournier and Burks. The key is to mold RJ into a James Harden point guard, a rebounding PG that can lead the break. And then have Kemba and D-Rose attack from the wings and get you those veteran clutch shots in a half-court offense. Leverage the youth and energy of Toppin and Quickley for defense and hustle plays.
CHUCK'S BACK!
As long as Derrick Rose is on the roster and Thibs is the coach Rose is going to be the guy he goes to when he feels he needs to get the offense going. Doesn`t matter if he`s the starter or not when he`s feeling good Thibs is going to put the bulk of the ball handling responsibilities in his hands and everyone knew this before they signed Kemba which was why this was such a head scratching move. Minute for minute Rose is still one of the best scoring point guards in the league so what does Kemba give you that Rose doens`t? Especially considering Rose has been healthier then Kemba the past two or 3 years. They needed a Lonzo Ball type guy. Can score when needed, make sure the ball moves and guys get easy shots and plays defense baseline to baseline.
My head seriously aches when Kenny talks. Pure verbal garbage, double-talking like audience his enemy.
Thank god for Chuck.
As evidenced by their performances since benching Kemba, he was a scapegoat to a bigger problem within every team Thibodeau coaches. They can hang because of defense, but he as a coach lacks any semblance of an offensive strategy necessary to complement his defensive mentality.
I agree with Chuck 💯 #Knicksnation
Rose is the same age as Curry...to hear a former player talk about him in terms of age only is weird, but maybe it is knee-envy...Instead of calling out Rose age why not call out Randle and Barrett not showing up...seems that is only reserved for Simmons after last season...he was the only star that had a bad game or 4th quarters...very weird

Crazy fall from Grace Kemba had went from averaging 25 3 seasons ago and 20 years ago to not even be able to make the Knicks rotation
Yes, Kenny, but when you put Alec Burks with those same four guys Kemba can't play with, he is +46. Kemba is bad on defense, nobody can deny that, and with the lack of his size, he is just a odd man out on that roster. I was surprised that the Knicks signed him this summer, he will never fit with a defensive minded coach, we already saw that with Brad Stevens in Boston, and Thibodeau is also more intense when it comes to defense.
He's a liability to play because of his defense and u can't play the man in the playoffs because if you do he will get destroyed
I've said this since he was in Charlotte. If you want to win with Kemba you have to build a defensive team around him. I'm not willing to do that if I'm the Knicks because they should build off of Julius Randle. Julius is younger and is getting better every year. Kemba is already 31 and we've seen what he can do.
Then why did they bother trading for him?? This isn't any new information

Brooklyn is missing that rookie they traded to Indiana
The Knicks need a QUALITY center. I'm tired of saying it. You can feed me all that "the league is different" now - but look at all the really good teams and they have a good all around center. Mitch is a slightly better Nerlens Noel. We need a guy who can do more than block and dunk. And guys in case you didn't know - when Kemba walker is on the bench the Knicks have the NUMBER ONE defense in the league. There is no "bad" team that can say that. There aren't many "elite" teams that can say that. They need to unleash Obi. Thibs needs to get off that veteran bs and start playing his young ballers like IQ and Obi.
Mitch isn’t better than Noel he’s a downgrade
As a bulls fan, he doesnt play rookies. If he hasnt played rookies during our times which was a decade ago then he never will get it
I’m In agreement with the guys, which is why I didn’t want Thibs, you need D but the emphasis on it is overstated especially in today’s game. If you don’t have talented scorers you’re not going anywhere
Simple as this: Instead of counting on player development for offensive improvement (Toppin, Quickley, RJ) they swapped their two best defenders (Payton, Bullock) for bad defenders (Walker, Fournier) who have not been good offensively.
I have never thought much of Thibodeau. He reminds me of Hubie Brown. Hubie's offense was give John Drew the ball.
When he's in there minus, it does not matter whose out there with him, but Chuck and the Jet are lost on plus minus.
Walker was the franchise guy in Charlotte. He's the classic example of a guy who got numbers on a bad team in games that didn't mean anything. He's never approached the player that he appeared to be on the Hornets.
I've always hated the +/- stat. There's so many complex factors that go into that. It doesn't accurately determine a player's ability.
