Serbian performance artist Marina Abramovich feels that it is essential to be ready to fail. South African artist William Kentridge believes that good advice has more to do with the interaction between the person giving it and the person receiving it. Rock singer and poet Patti Smith shares the advice that writer William S. Burroughs once gave her: to build and protect your name by producing good work, and eventually the name will become its own currency. American singer David Byrne emphasizes the importance of not undervaluing your own artistic satisfaction. German film director Wim Wenders stresses that you have to do what no one else can do better than you. Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson recommends that you are sensitive to your surroundings - and British artists Dinos and Jake Chapman cut to the bone.

@@DelbertStinkfester While yes it's a great way to give people access, for a young artist it can easily give them a big ego in thinking they're better than they are. Or the pressure to be better can overwhelm them into quitting all together. I've seen both extremes far too often.

The Woman With No Head so I’m already seeing the dark side of being an artist. You have to be old or dead In order to have some success. This is the most false hope you get from people who struggled to at least make a living as an artist.

I dont think this is good advise. Consuming other people's work is where a lot of people get ideas, technique, inspiration, and new subject matters from. We're not in a self-contained bubble, and we dont have a hidden style burried deep within us that comes from nothing. It has to be developed, and the tools to develop it are procured from the world (which includes other people and their work), all of which has a very necessary and tangible influence on us.
Well, more along the lines of "find things from others' artwork to reach your own uniqueness"
Cuz you will eventually find yourself combining all the ones you've seen to make something that you'll find beautiful

Everybody does. What sets artists apart from the rest is diving in and doing. Again and again and again.
Love the guy who said basically that advice will fall on deaf ears unless that person is seeking those words. So often we hear the advice we need but don't truly take it to heart until we hears it sometimes years or decades later and are ready to listen.

“When you become routine, that is end of everything.” I don’t think I’ve ever heard something ring so true for every my everyday life, let alone my creative life. Most people would say having a structured routine would help you and benefit you and is almost necessary, but I feel the exact opposite. At least for myself. Whenever I start to fall into a routine, that lasts too long, I start to feel awful. Anxious, depressed, held back, just wanting to break from that. Doing the same things over and over and over and over and over again. I can do things for a short length of time, but it’s almost as if my brain and body just refuses things once they’ve become too routine. Even things I should or kind of want to be doing. And it makes me feel even worse when people talk down to me or belittle me for feeling that way, and it probably sounds ridiculous, but that’s just how I feel and need to operate. I need to take breaks and move onto the next thing or something different, then I can return to something I’ve done for a while. But I can’t do the same thing forever. Especially in my daily life, and definitely in my creative life.

My advice: have a job. As an artist I avoided it for far to long. And NEVER quit making stuff. And know YOU are the masterpiece you seek to create.
I spoke a famous artist that told me and my class at the time the same thing! you aren't wrong! He said "always be able to sustain yourself, its hard to make art without heating, without water, or when you're hungry. Always sustain yourself, don't feel like you have to 'live the experience of an artist (meaning the broke and struggling artist'".
@@enadine6405 You don't have to sell art to be an artist, the same way you don't have to sell woodworks to be a carpenter. You aren't selling out or cheapening yourself if you have a "regular" job and make art on the side.
@@pendlera2959 I agree, what I'm saying is, if you want to work as one, make sure you can sustain yourself somehow :) Don't buy into the idea that you have to struggle and be robbed of basic necessities.

I went through a phase of deleting all the spiritual groups I had joined on face book and replaced them with art groups. Best move I made on face book. My game of life changed from arguing with people to growing with those who were really transforming themselves through their art.

Most people don't really like artists because we are, by nature, disruptive. Creativity is all about inventing new and surprising things, subverting expectations, adventurous behavior. And people like what they are used to. They like confomity and predictable relationships, because it makes them feel like they are in control. As artists, we have to accept that we are the complete opposite of what most people are looking for.

Also I recommend to anyone who likes art and has their favorite artist, never forget to let them know how much you admire them. A like is not enough, kind words are more powerful. I haven't get as much income out of my art and went through horrible times where I just felt I was wasting my life. But comments from complete strangers and some customers made me want to keep going. Things haven't changed, though. But I guess it would be worse stop arting and waste your lifetime doing nothing...

Don’t confuse his reference to being about life in general, ie conforming to the squares. That’s the exact opposite of what he meant. He’s referring to artistic integrity.

One thing I've learned over the last decade that has deeply changed how I see my art is avoiding consuming contemporary visual art. Biggie Smalls once said he didn't listen to current rap, instead he listened to genres of music outside his era, mostly country and reggae. We can't expect to create honest and personal art if we are using art already created in our era. It becomes highly derivative. It's the exact reason why current popular music all sounds similar and boring. It IS however exciting to find influences from places in history and subjects outside your own medium.
I left tourism course last year to pursue an art course. It was one of the hardest choice in my life. I know people would say I don't need a course to be a great artist, but it's only art that makes me genuinely happy. I hope everyone that watches will be successful. 🙏🏻

Wim Wenders says, "Don't do anything that you know somebody else can do better. Do what nobody else can do, except for you."
I guess he's trying to say something along the lines of "Be an original," but it comes off like "Don't be inspired by your superiors. Give up without trying. Also, do the impossible."
I could have listened to a whole talk by Marina Abramovic & Patti Smith though. They were on point.
+CRI TTER I agree, I don't think there's anything wrong with copying, that's how every great master originally learned. Eventually you have to find your own style though.
I think it came off like that because they split what he said. The first part saying whatever you do, nobody can do it better. There's a difference between learning from others and trying to copy there work.

There are so many artists right now that it is increasingly difficult to stand out. I believe you can do everything right and still fail economically while someone with half your ability but with good fortune will kick your ass. Life isn't fair so don't do art expecting a fair outcome. Art is therapy. In the end you can ask yourself 'did I live a creative life?' And if the answer is yes you can RIP.

I disagree with saying you can’t be a great artist until your only passion is art and it’s an obsession. That’s a very toxic mentality that makes young artists believe they aren’t good enough but otherwise agreed with what everyone else said :)

@@bethechangebevegan853 Well, if you honestly want to make it a career, art making must be what you do the vast bulk of every day. I've worked as an assistant to several successful artists, people who earn a living solely by sales of their work, and what they all share is 1) an uncommon work ethic (most never take vacations believe it or not), 2) all are super organized in regards to materials required to fabricate their work, and 3) they're all quite self critical but don't ever allow themselves to get married to or haunted by final results. Keep working is their chief motto.
I'm an artist myself, wish I had #1 but don't, I work at #2, and as for #3 it's a goal, that's all.

I don't know what it is about Patti Smith that I like so much. Of course I don't know her personally, but she seems super authentic...not pretentious at all. Read her book "Just Kids"...it's a great memoir.
Never made clearer, that what Patti tells us, comes from the heart and relates to everyone (being an artist or not), while what Marina tells us (or Wim) is just about them. Not everyone needs to do new stuff all the time. Not every artists is a performer, who wants to shock or do things to left people with mouth wide open in the audience. Many many artists just try to make the world a little bit more beautiful and worth being a part of it all. Art for me is more like a net, somebody's weaving for you, that you won't fall down to hard, when times get rough.

I think this is a very crucial moment in my life as an artist. This morning I just got rejected by the US government on my artist visa application. In the past few hours, I'd been examining my life and myself as an artist: "Am I a loser and a failure." I don't have the answer yet but there is one thing I'm sure, which is I'm an artist who wants to make her own art.
At this moment, lots of thoughts passing through, but there is only one thing I wish I can make it happen in my life, that is one day, I can eventually find my own peace of mind through my artwork.
The only time you'd fail is if you gave into what is convenient instead of pursuing what makes you happy. I do not think you are a loser or a failure. I am proud that you are pursuing what you love. I also hope that one day I can find my own peace of mind but I feel that comes from rejection and the ability to grow from that instead of letting rejection define you and I. I hope this helps you a little bit!
most recent vid on your channel is four years old. unless you have a ton of artwork showing elsewhere, you may do well to be a bit more prolific. that alone may be why you were denied.
either way, keep going at your art. even if you can only spend 30 minutes per day on it. don't let anything stop you there.
This made me really cry, i guess I needed to hear this. Im pretty insecure and afraid to fail. These thoughts are the reason I keep being stuck... Man this is hard. If I really want to be good at art I have to stop being afraid and start being comfortable with making mistakes. Im I the only one feeling like this? I cant imagine...

Every industry tbh. And then people like to act confused as to why the kids are naive and have some "fantasy" in their head about what certain professions are as if they didn't construct it in the first place lmao.
I hang out with a lot creative people in my life. Architects to painters to chefs and I call it the creative pyramid the closer you get to the top the smaller the pyramid. Everybody knows everybody. I have seen a specific painter that started a certain motif and that is all they do now. They make a lot of money but it is really destroying him as well. One of my favorite lines in Entourage "You want creative integrity drive a Prius".
Patti Smith, you are real. You have that true spirit of a great artist.

be ready to fail. thats a beast of a life lesson as well as a reality for artists. Im a musician and songwriter and constantly Im getting rejected for different music libraries or opportunities. Rejections open the door for success. Plus, it makes you have thick skin so even every life stuff just bounces off because of you know yourself and you know how the world works.
Im a 13 year old girl and i have started to learn how to draw since age 5 i realized my love for art at age 7 or 8 i have talked to my dad about going to a early college and sign up for art classes he has told me artist don't earn much money i have told him i am just trying to achieve my dream of being an artist but when a man on this video said do what you want, that motivated me to not care what others say i still don't know the kind of art i will sign up for but I'm still gonna study.

I wouldn't abandon routine and routines as an artist too quickly, it can be comforting and reassuring in tough times, take risks when you feel you can, there's no rush to prove how out there you are
I resonate with what william kentridge said. Not the advice but rather that advice only sticks under the right circumstances at the right time.
The advice I received was "use your time wisely" I didnt understand, it took 5 ears until I was ready to hear it again.
Still processing after another 8 years.
To act on the advice is the hard part.

I am 14 years old and began to take art classes since I was 4. Art is such an important aspect of my life, something I can’t live without. If I’m not doing homework then I’m painting or drawing. For the past 6 months I’ve been working really hard to get commissions and to build an audience on TH-cam through my channel, all to prove to my parents that I can find people who appreciate my art, and that it is something worth pursuing. I am very fortunate and grateful to have found something I love and am passionate about at this point of my life. I haven’t lived a day without art in my conscious years and I feel very blessed every time I get to create. My goal is definitely to go to art school and hopefully become a full time artist someday.

I've been a starving artist most of my life, making TH-cam videos, creating Woodworks, photography, painting. You name it. It's not very great for getting wealthy but it's definitely rewarding

My advice: If art is hard for you - and it's not for everyone, but if it's hard for you, don't wait for it to become easy. You are traumatized. People have put you down, discouraged you, shamed you. Now you have mental health issues, but you can't give up your art. No one will come to apolozige for what happened, unfortunately. All you can do is look forward and make it work somehow.

I had an epiphany when it comes to art! I've only been painting a year and I just wasn't getting it at first, globbing on the paint and it would get muddy and all mix together, but now everything just clicked and I'm creating art I want to see! :D
For musicians i would say: play with as many people as you can. Practice, and create your own work and don't make excuses like: i don't have the best bass/ guitar/ drum/ best voice. Start creating, and just start doing it.
