Hi guys, I've been extremely busy with different projects, gigs and private life and as a result I was not able to make new video's in the last two weeks. I'm back in the lab right now and the new video's are dropping asap! Thanks for the support and patience. TLM
Hi guys, Due to health issues I couldn't finish video's I was working on (NS7-2 review) and I can't record new video's either. I lost my voice over the weekend and that makes it a bit difficult to record stuff ;) I should be fine in a couple of days so stay tuned! For the DJ's who would like to be part of the Saturday Super Session: Join the Saturday Super Session and send me your own video!
i don't have a DJ controller as yet i'm just using virtual DJ, but i watch your videos everyday because i like djing and i want to learn about it for when i get my controller and thanks to your videos i am learning a lot big up man i wish you all the best and don't stop sharing the knowledge.
man you are the best teacher ever. you analyze everything to the point. hope many guys out there who want to become a dj find your videos and tutorials.
djTLMtv dude you rock, it has taken me weeks to find someone who describes the structure of music and beat matching and mixing, and this shiz is perfect!!! Right on brotha
I have seen a lot of dj vids and I stumbled on yours by accident, but I like the way you explain the craft. You have a real grasp on how to break it down for the newbie. Keep it up, when I started there was no videos so hopefully this will help others that were as frustrated with practicing as I was.
Great tutorial brother. Very specific and clear instructions on how to mix. BTW, truly love your massive record collection! It breaks my heart as I was closed to having that same amount of records in the 80's and 90's. As the times changed however records faded, and so did my collection!! Boy do I regret it!!
Thanks bro, I appreciate that. And I feel you when it comes to the vinyl. At a certain point I wasn’t using it at all, but I decided that I never want to get rid of it. What I will be doing over the years is taking every piece through a selection process. I can guarantee that probably half of the collection will be taken out. I have a lot of vinyl in here that’s just too beaten up. It served me wel, but is basically unplayable now. It doesn’t make sense for me to keep that in anymore, so a cleanup is coming! Especially now that I’m doing a monthly vinyl stream. I want everything in my collection to be in good condition
I'm still working on learning to beat match by ear without any visual aides, but I'm getting better... when I play out I'm using BPM readouts and waveforms to help, but still using pitch faders, nudging the jogs, etc... no sync. .. this frees me up some for other things... thanks as always for all you do for the DJ community, and all the help you've been over the last few years of my journey. ....
Great direction here Lets hope this tutorial series helps bridge the gap between the old vs young DJs. Lets face it, being a new young DJ is fast cheap and easy but becoming an old DJ takes a lot of time, learning, experience, knowledge, practice, professionalism, expense and yes even some occasional failure.
Hey TLM. Just subbed to your channel. Watched several of your vids and I'm just starting out as a DJ but I tend towards more hardcore. Not a hip hop fan, but love your passion and your way to describe things. Stay awesome man!
Great stuff, keep it coming! Will you show how to prepare a battle set on Serato? How to set up an transition to songs and set scratch points? Thank you
New dj here with a couple questions. 1) What if you dont know a song that good because someone just randomly requested it? Can you still play it without it sounding like a trainwreck lol? Also is beatmatching synonymous with mixing. I notice alot of older DJs don't use the term beatmatching per se. They just say "mixing" so it throws me off at times when im trying to learn. Thank you for your videos.
Beat matching is a part of mixing. You match the beats (meaning that you sync the tempo of both tracks) and then you make the transition from song 1 to song 2. If you know how to mix, you can avoid a trainwreck at any time. Even if you don’t know the song
I beat match and sync without Headphones no Dj Booth... I simply use youtube. And my ears. And I have impressed many with what I can do with a simple internet connection a good stereo and proper computer with highspeed internet. Currently I use wireless for this computer. And Bluetooth for my sound. And people can't tell the difference. It's not always perfect... but when I use patience to my best advantage... I do almost perfect for hours on end.... Problem with me, my mind works better for this sort of thing if I have a few drinks. Can't explain why... And the way I Dj is simple. A mouse Keyboard for the computer and that's all I practically need!
Great video, but unfortunately the position displayed is not the best. I suggest repositioning the camera and filming as we would see when applying your knowledge to equipment.
You probably won't even see this comment, but I am a new Dj and at the moment teaching myself, I did have a question the Sync button- When I do mine the pitch changes? do I just turn the pitch back down, my only worry is doing that while the song is playing will sound a little strange would it not? I love your videos and can't wait to carry on watching this series :)
Emily and Katie sync sets the same speed(pitch) to both tracks and sets both track kicks to hit at once, sync being the computer beatmatch, you wanna sync when the channel being synced is silent, then do the transition and actual mix
Is there any audio normalizing software, or volume leveling out there that you recommend for Mac. Most of my tracks different volume levels. I need something permanent that will not compromise quality. Thank you.
It is either TLM or ELLASKINS (founder of Dj Tutor). Might want to check ellaskins out if you are not familiar, he does a tutorial on EVERYTHING, including how to mix Bhangra (indian music).
No doubt! :) Part 2 (know your equipment) is rendering right now so I will have that online tonight and that will be all talk, but part 3 (beatmatching) is all action!
ur dead on with checking ur music all the way through. i had a joint crackin one time and in the middle of the song all u heard was drama kings exclusive..and nothin but a bunch of hollarin..ruined the track..was all bad lol
Jumping from two cars moving at same speed would mean they would pass you, as you are jumping into the air, you would need to jump forward at the same speed as the cars too. But I get your point.
I should have used the scenario from the movie Speed, where they put a plank in between two moving busses. Then the theory would make more sense, I agree :)
