How many 2x6s can we mill from one poplar tree?

- We need a boat load of 2x6s for an upcoming project so Kelly and I fire up the sawmill to produce some lumber. We were able to get three decent sized logs out of one poplar tree.

Now that it's been two and a half years how are those boards holding up? Poplar isn't known for its rot resistance
Still good. If I keep them off the ground then I can get some decent life from them

I see who the real worker is around the farm. Boy its a good thing Kelly is such a good sport or you would be in big trouble Troy. You might not be good at math but you still do a pretty good job at sawing.

I've heard/read that if you want to stop the checking on the ends, either seal them or double sticker each end and the checking will stop at the second sticker.
I have not heard that. May have to give that a try. We used to seal them with oil based sealer when we were doing wood working grade milling.

4" grinder works great to sharpen your saw blades , I sharpen mine right on the sawmill LM2000 , I use a setter that is for an ol cross cut saw works great

Takes a lot of figuring when milling lumber Troy. That Kelley is a good Off Barrer/Fork Truck operator/ Lumber Stacker, shes definitely a keeper. A good sawyer can make or break production yeilds in the Lumber industry. Your Mill does a good job. Very little waste with a band mill. 👍👍👍

If yoi were almost poor, starting a homestead from scratch, would the Harbor Freight sawmill be a viable option?
I don't know much about it, but with my experience with HB tools I would say look for other options. There are some older Norwood and other brands for sale used. I would look there first.
@@RedToolHouse, thanks. Trying to talk a friemd of mine into looking at the higher quality new options out there. The Timbery M100 without log bed extention is on sale for $3300, same as mine but have the extension. Is basically the Wood-Mizer LT10 log bed with a different sawhead on it.
Wet t shirt lol. Mine stays wet from sweat and my wife of 42 years is still impressed. I want to see it though. Take care and keep it simple and safe.
how will poplar hold up to weather? I have a ton and just got a mill. Trying to figure uses for Poplar and hard or sugar maple.
U call in circumference the diameter
I thought the same, but the numbers he said are much too small to be the circumference. I think his $84 tape measure automatically tells you the diameter when it's wrapped around something.
Yes, it is a diameter tape. Fancy (and I have to justify the expense with the wife)

How good is poplar lumber for decking. How do you take care of it as decking.

Troy, the audio is really really in and out because of the position of your mic, could you try what Jay bates does on his channel? I noticed that you, like him, also wear a hat all of the time , he clips his mic on the bill of his hat and the sound is much more consistant.

I don't know much about the the hybrid poplar. True poplar is a weak wood. The Tulip Poplar that we mill is a false poplar and it does make good building material as long as it is dry.

Do you sell any of your wood? I need some wide boards to rebuild our coal shed at our hunting camp in Pocahontas county. (By the way, I'm the fan that recognized you and your wife in Chick-fil-a, this past Tuesday. Also, I'm the guy with the little Stihl chainsaw, that you asked if it was a 40" bar....lol.. It's a 28" bar, but it's a beast! )
I know that there is a local sawmill near our camp, but they're very crooked people who timbered the land when I was a teenager, and did more damage to the farm than good. They were supposed to do select cutting and instead, did more clear cutting. They said they were removing the culvert pipes on the farms roads to put in bigger culvert pipes. What they didn't mention, was they were taking their larger pipes with them when they were finished, and leaving gaping ditches in the roads that made most of the roads impassable! We aren't allowed to do business with the sawmill company, nor do we want to. But if we could find somewhere to buy barnwood, we would like to rebuild our coal shed to relatively the same design as our old coal shed.
I remember who you are! Glad you stopped to say hi! We don't sell any of our wood simply because I have been using every bit of it so far for projects. Have you tried the mill between Muddlety and Craigsville? I have heard they are easy to work with. That would keep you from having to transport it as far.
@@RedToolHouse You know, I forgot all about that sawmill. Probably because we usually head that way on a weekend when they are closed, but I know exactly where you are talking about!
