When I was 5 years old, I can remember hanging over my father’s shoulder watching him doing brake jobs or hanging out under the grease rack watching oil changes and grease jobs. I once remember when my father had replaced the front wheel bearings and delivered a car to one of my friends dad. My friend and I went out to the car and I took the hubcap off and the bearing grease cap off and I was showing my friend what my dad had done. When the 2 men came out, my dad seemed embarrassed and put everything back but he wasn’t mad at me. I think he was actually proud that I was really paying attention. Me too. Same car. Happened just as I was entering a tricky rotary in Massachusetts. Fortunately, I was able to coast around and exit without incident. Btw, apparently, that dampener does do something. The new axles (I replaced both) were without those dampeners and I immediately noticed a slight, but distinct shudder when accelerating from a stop. Have gotten used to it.
In my 40 years as a Honda dealer tech I of course had many driveshafts to remove/replace. One hint I can offer is if you're going to use a tool like the one shown, put the ball joint nut back on upside down (or a regular nut) and flush with the end of the stud or slightly more. On a tough one it can prevent the end of the stud from being crushed where it is cross drilled for the cotter pin. Also, some silicone spray on the ball joint boot helps the tool slide past without damaging the boot and you should do your best to adjust the tool to contact the end of the stud as squarely as possible for the least chance of damage to it.

Chinesium is a disgusting stink of the shit plastics they use and trapped smog, the reasons cv axels smell like weed is because brand new axel grease smells like a metric shit ton of damp weed.

@@barc533 These cars are also known for snapping axles as I have come to find out. And I don't even drive it hard. It's just moisture that gets trapped under that rubber puck and rusts it through.
Chiming in, my 2012 Honda Fit snapped the drivers axle in half just like this. It amazed me, since 30 years in automotive repair I have never seen that happen. The rust under the dampener was about 2 milometers deep max, but that was enough. I thought for sure the transmission exploded when it happened. Easy fix, but jeeze it sounded horrible.
If every Dorman box came with a complementary dime bag you might not have such a low opinion of their parts. In fact you might look forward to Dorman caused come-backs.
I've only seen this happen once before, and it was on a similar vintage Acura TL. Rusted out under the dampener until the axle was less than 1/2" and it snapped. I don't live in the rust belt, so we don't see things like that very often, but I currently work in a pretty affluent area where lots of people from out of state that move here to work for Intel, Nike, Google, etc move to. Sso even though we don't salt the roads here, there seem to be a lot of rusty cars in this particular area.
We had one just like that at the shop I worked at a kid just bought it and was learning to drive a stick broke right at the dampener Honda Civic great video 👍
When they legalized MJ for medical use a few years back in CA, I was working in an impound yard . Within the first week, there was a marked increase in accidents where the cars REEKED of weed.
Prolly just stopped covering up the smell. Legalization of weed just stops people from doing it in secret and allows the state to take a cut of the profits. Thats all it changes.
You would think by now M.O. being married to a mechanic, her car will be fixed when there is no work to do, or otherwise she can do it her self she should know how to do it, that would be one great video to watch :)
Great video. I’m especially impressed with the great camera work (great field of view and excellent lighting). The mechanic tutorial content is awesome and your narration style is quite entertaining!
I understand this is an old video, but I'd never seen that happen either until a few months ago. '06 Accord snapped its half-shaft right at the damper. I kinda live in snow 'n' salt country as well, but not as severe as your location. Took it 15 years to rot in two. Driver happened to hit the throttle just as she bounced over some railroad tracks, so that somehow provided the right shock and torque to finish it off.
Hello Mr O. I have 2004 Honda CR-V that the boot tore and all the grease came out. I had a new axle out by a front end alignment place who I've use a long time. When I got the Crv back it had the shacking taking off and more so taking off on right turn there was a vibration at take off like you said. After market with out the damper was the problem. I had to go to Honda and get an O M E part. !👍
Hemp was used in making paper products in the USA until WW2. China, being largely agrarian still, farmers produce roughly half the world's supply of legal hemp.
I have this theory that monotonous repetitive factory work would be more tolerable for the workers and production rates would go up if they handed out a Joint at the beginning of the day, and one after lunch for dessert

a half-half shaft lmao
@@Jmasta7 drive shaft half shaft are in live axles??? surley
One broken half axle makes two half axles.
Is a cv axel that isnt moving an nv axel?
Like axel rose.. lol.. accel.. axle.. acksel.. akzel.. aqsle...
Looks like Vtec kicked in Yo!
😂😂.
was looking for that comment before making it... That TORQUE though!
lol
Those windshield wipers are off the hook
Its a SOHC 1.7 L no vtech
I bought the same style ball joint separator that worked at harbor freight for 20 bucks and it is probably the best investment I made this year. That thing has saved me so much time its ridiculous.
I have a Honda Element with a torn cvc boot and need to get it fixed before it breaks. Always enjoy your videos
I would say that old broken CV Axle was a Dorman product! Easy snap, easy break- made of chinesium!
A dorman axle will just work fine, minor issue is that somehow, it rotates opposite to the good one. But you can make good burnouts
Those balancing rubbers that are on the shaft hold Walter and dirt. They rust out the shaft there and break. Looks to be OEM too.
Heh, remember when they were made of Mexiconium back in the 80's and 90's? What were they made of before that?
Foam Japnadium?
The Disgruntled Mechanic Lmao. 😂😁😀
You truly are the rust whisperer
We need a Mrs o video
She has one.. Fixing her rear wiper... No, not that wiper!... Her rear "windshield" wiper.LOL
i was surprised you didn't say anything about it needing a wheel aliment check. but some thing new learnt, great video as always Eric O cheers ...
Worked for that company for awhile the whole aisle where we kept those smelled just like that
HA HA! Mrs. O likes to mess with you Eric!
She's like a money Nazi that only charges Mr. O as she blows money on all kinds of shit.
That odor is called chineseium. It is a certain stink that all china parts have
where do you buy the good axle's from?
Chinesium is a disgusting stink of the shit plastics they use and trapped smog, the reasons cv axels smell like weed is because brand new axel grease smells like a metric shit ton of damp weed.
at least it dont smell skunk
Sometimes certain rubber types smell of Mary J too. Maybe this is the reason along with the grease. Don't believe me? Head directly to the steering wheel covers and floor mats aisle of Walmart and auto stores
Ask Ave he completely understands the guang Jong back of a truck belching black smoke chineseium smell.
Mrs. O .........The Good Stuff! ........
It's ok Mrs. O we love you here ih Oregon.
VTEC kicked in yo and the torque of this big block just snapped the damn CV axle. Excellent vids eric.
MRS.O IS FUNNY ERIC YOU SHOULD FIX HER CAR REMEMBER HAPPY WIFE HAPPY LIFE
And her light over food prep area.
Hahah great video great banter between you and this is how we have the same problem with them drive shaft over here
this is probably my favorite "episode" from SMAR, "I peed a little" "we don't smoke the weed"
not to mention the proverbiable " the true enemy was New York rust"
This exact thing happened on my 06 TL a few years ago. I was just glad that my transmission was not the issue.
Dude this happened to my 06 tl today, the car just went to the mechanic, I still think it’s the transmission
morrij01 how would I know for sure that it’s not the transmission
@@barc533 the axle was spanned in half, got it replaced and I've been driving the car for over 18 months now and it's been completely fine. The transmission is as smooth as it's ever been.
Might as well get something good for your money.
Mrs O present so well in the video....great team...
lol got to love it when Mrs O gives him a hard time
Behind every man is a Mrs. O inspiring him.
You got to have the wifey in the shop more often for comic relief.....she's a hoot!!!!!
I snapped an axle going backwards at about 3mph, in my 02 Focus the other day.
We love you both, Eric and Mrs. O. I wish I could win the lottery and send you a big check to help cover your overhead!
Mrs. O is such a good sport!
Just replaced a CV axle on a CR-V on Sunday from the same company and I agree that it did have a happy grass smell.
Love the interaction between you and Mrs. O. Sticky bud huh
That I in vic’s axle totally snapped from the massive amount of tq.and vtec kicking in yo in. Little engine must be puttin down at least 110
This happened to my friends Accord when he gave it the beans on a green light
She already did a video on that last year! It was great.
A) there is always work to do, B) there is an old saying about a painter's house peeling and the cobbler's children needing shoes.
Saw couple of your videos. I like the rawness of them... Great work.... And blessings from Pakistan
“We don’t smoke the weed” LOL
I know right
Isn't it legal in New York now ?? Idk cause I live in Las Vegas where it's recreational!
Nice to see an honest car mechanic that actually knows what he is doing. I’m no pro, but can fix most electrical issues with the schematics and a voltmeter. I have what I think is an ok diagnostic analyzer. A Zurich Pro. Does ok. Love the apparent patience! Funny how any electrical problems seem so basic. Once you find the proble. Lol
This happened to my brothers 03 Civic Tried to spin pulling out on a slight incline and snapped it real quick! We had to call our Dad to come tow us back.
Those are the special 420 axles
Partnumber: 420
