It's not synthesizing the sound of anything. It's a musical instrument of it's own. If it were a pipe organ, and there were pipe organs with player systems, then you would get away with saying it is synthesis, as they more often than not include imitation sounds of real orchestral instruments.
Synthesis simply means "to make", it doesn't imply that the sound is synthesized as one would expect from an electronic synthesizer using vaccum tubes or transistors.
An amazing piece of art and technology! Just stunning! As a kid I saw orchestrions from time to time and I loved them. Today they have almost completely disappeared. Thanks for sharing!
This is the pinnacle of what can be done with mechanics and a little electrical engineering. As no improvement is available, then you have to change of technology.
Perforated paper was used to make complicated patterns for weaving. Then the system got adopted for self-playing instruments, and only then did the metal industry see the potential of that technology to turn, bore and mill engine parts and exchangeable parts for mass production.
Good to see you uploading again! missed your restorations! Edit: apparently TH-cam just isnt pushing notifications about your uploads to me. My apologies
As far as I know, orchestrions suffer from a lack of note dynamics because of the way notes are recorded. So it's hardly possible to talk about any "feel" here =)
@@Timedelayedfuse I'm not a maniac, I just play piano, and we studied similar devices in music history class. But if you hear dynamics - ok, I don't mind, just let's not get personal.

Simple in its intricacy. The pinnacle of fluid and creative mechanics. Wintergarten has some competition. (even though Instruments are in different classes/families)
Pre-electronics data storage and retrieval/music synthesis. Great!
Not synthesis. Automation. ;-)
it's not synthesizing anything lol it is playing

All 3 of these replies managed to misinterpret this comment in the same exact way

the fact it can even turn on and off the mandolin bar is amazing
And the guitar harp has a nice sound to, not too tinney
This is actually one of the best O roll players I have heard. As annoying as O-roll players can be, this is smooth and not unpleasant. Very nice!
That big wheel is so pretty. Craftsman took care in creating this machine.
De onde nasce inspiração ?
It's also in very good tune...huzzah!
"actually"
Anything is better than a bagpipe. I once paid one to please stop playing or go elsewhere.
Awesome! Much nicer to watch all those moving parts than a modern computer.
Technically this a computer albeit one made for a highly specific task.
Well, modern computers are meant to perform tasks, not be visually entertaining.

The original multi-track sequencer! ❤
Pure magic, I could only dream of owning one.
You and me both 🙏
Totally awesome
Thanks for sharing this 👍👍
Thank you for the close ups. As a retired mechanical tech i love seeing how things operate. 💜💜💜
amazing. I'm so glad that someone is keeping it alive . thank you.
This is a newly built orchestrion, not an antique one. This man built it.
@@TadfaftyImpressive!
Doing a terrific job on this. Really exciting to see this come together .
fabulous arrangement, amazing craftsmanship. What a great day to be alive!
What an absolute genius and entertaining contraption. Ingenuity at its finest.
That's some real craftsmanship right there. Well done.

This is fabulous and fascinating!!!! This is SO GOOD!
The most incredible instrument
i can't imagine the amount of time, effort, and money that went into this. you are a true artist.
Beautiful work of art. Such a nice sound. 🎉
It doesn’t get better than this😎😎😎
Thanks for posting this 🙏
Who needs one of them new fangled eye pods when you got this contraption!
Thanks so much for sharing this! Words are not adequate to describe the wonderful emotions this beautiful music evokes!
This needs to be on spotify. This exact video and music.
Love those old pianolas, one of the best I've heard.
That's a very curious looking accordion in there
Wonderful to see and hear. So many thing to figure out. The four small bellows working together; go figure.
That's the most plesant sound I've for ages. Isn't there any more??
Jolly good show, I say.
I can't believe a roll of paper is doing all that.

youtube itself is just ones and zeroes

Wow. Beautiful tone all around!
Magnificent! Bravo!
An incredible accomplishment. I can only imagine the complexity, and it all works together so well.
Thank you for playing the piano. Hello, it's warm weather.
Very cool, totally so. All gears, levers, and air chamber things- so cool.
Really great machine!
As someone who has a huge fascination of things mechanical, this masterpiece made my day, its so beautifu❤
Love it.
Very nice, Bruce
So great! It’s like an old fashioned film camera playing music, and it’s fabulous 👏👏👏🎹☘️

I don't think it gets more cowbelly than this , even without the cowbell
Your gonna want that cowbell in there, fellas. Trust me
I've got a prescription for more cowbell.

This is actually funky and a true headbopper.
Excellent restoration thoroughly enjoyed it. It says it should be coming out of the showroom.
It even plays with "feel", emphasizing certain notes more than others. Very organic playing.

Ein mechanisches Wunderwerk, sehr schön 👍
I love this happy music! I want to have one to turn on first thing in the morning when I wake up!
Lovely Orchestrion, all the stuff is perfectly tunes and it sounds amazing, with such a good song. Nice video.
Seeing and hearing James P. Johnson play this piece was truly a musical marvel.
Think of this machines age and how remarkable it is !!!

Wasn't this a song John Candy was listening to in Planes trains and automobiles , or did his polka band play it in home alone?
The polka in Home Alone was deck the halls.
This, in a way, is far more sophisticated than a computer.
