Big thanks for your generosity! May you flourish like the blossom 🌼🌹 of spring and may you live long happy and healthy forever! Though I am thousands of miles away but being a solo mountain hiker could feel the toil of Jamal Green the great! Lots of love and respect once again from a solo mountain hiker from the Hindu Kush Mountains Lower Chitral District of Pakistan!
Lin H -- thank you SO much for the SuperThanks! That's very generous of you and very appreciated. I'm humbled by the kindness. Happy Holidays to you as well. 🌞✌
Yee can keep yer fancy cars and yer big houses, the thing I envy is your knowledge of the back country, where to find water, how to get around. Would love to do a long walk like that, but I'd probably get lost or die of thirst lol. Keep up the awesome vids and epic walks!
Thanks for watching and the comment! And yeah... most of my treks are centered around where I know I'll be able to find water at least once per day. Cheers! 🌞
Thanks -- I knew this would be one of the longer videos in the series just because I enjoyed the day and shot so much. I hoped to cut the video down even more, but then decided I just wanted to keep what I had! 🌞👍
@@Acrossutah I am so used to your longer videos, these are over almost too soon. But whatever you do, I welcome. Never get tired of being along on your adventures. It’s almost becoming a meme when you take a diversionary route then say it’s time to get going and hike some miles.
Such a joy to watch this while it snows outside. I backpacked here this summer and I must say that even in 90°-95° temps the water up Death Hollow is COLD.
Yeah -- I had a friend who hiked the full length of the canyon in April once and a few in the group nearly got hypothermia. I'm glad it was sunny and warm when I was there so that I could enjoy it. Thanks again for watching. ✌
Thanks! It really was a good day and I wanted to cut the video down to be under 20 minutes -- but there was just so much I wanted to share, so I left it! And yes, some may say I talk too much to the animals -- but... it's lonely out there at times! 😉👍
Favorite day so far! Enjoyed all the details...hopping bird, fish, duck...all so beautiful and peaceful. Just what I REALLY needed today. As always, thanks for taking us along and sharing in your adventures! ✌️ peace.
Glad you enjoyed it! I knew this was likely to be the longest video of the series as I shot so much and really wanted to share most of it. Thanks for watching and the nice comment. ✌
Yep -- it was a good day in a great place. I hoped to make this video shorter, but then just gave up because I wanted to keep it all -- even all the talking with the animals! 😉✌
The most valuable things in life you'll take with you forever are the experiences. No amount of money can buy that, and no amount of time is ever wasted on them.
Thanks -- I appreciate that as I really do try to tell/show the story as it happens. Sometimes I'll have a preconceived notion for what will happen on a specific day/trip -- but then it goes a completely different direction (which is why I don't do a lot of "Today we are going to do A, B, C...", etc.) It's funny though, on my flash flood video (more broad audience) I get occasional complaints for being "fake" because I set up a tripod and walk by or cross a pool and thus it's not real since I'm doing it twice! 😒 Thanks again for watching. ✌
I teach an intro to backpacking course at Utah Valley University, and the upper Escalante canyon is the ideal trip for students. Walk day 1 to Death Hollow, then spend the morning of day 2 hiking up DH without packs. Then down to Sand Creek. Explore sand creek a little and then an easy 2 miles out on day 3. A lot of things to do and see in a short stretch of river. Love it! I always enjoy watching others perspective of DH. 👊🏻
Yep -- that makes sense and sounds like a good course/agenda. DH is one of the few places that I've actually hiked with friends more than once -- it tends to be a favorite even for those who don't love the canyons as much as I do. Thanks again for watching and sharing your experience. 🌞
Great video as usual, Jamal. I started watching your videos years ago and find myself coming back time and time again to rewatch them. They're so well put together; Creative shots, relaxing background music, and just the right level of commentary throughout. I know it takes a ton of effort to film and edit these so I just wanted to say thank you for sharing it. P.S. I hiked Death Hollow 2 months ago (Oct 2022) and can confirm that the scary step is back.
Thanks! Wow -- fascinating to hear that the Scary Step has returned! I know the region got several big storms this monsoon season, so I guess that must have flushed out the sand. Thanks for watching and sharing that bit of info. 🌞
So beautiful... 7 years ago we went down hwy 12 from Zion on to Natural Bridges National Monument before heading home to Texas. I remember wondering what was out there passing through this area... Never imagined it was quite this nice... So cool. Thanks so much again for taking us along!!!! Can't get enough!
Awesome -- thanks! Yeah, there are so many great spots in all the "in between" areas in Utah. Glad you are enjoying the series -- thanks again for watching! 🌞
Amazing, as usually. Thanks for your videos, great job! We did Death Hollow via Boulder Mail Trail two years ago as a 3 day backpacking hike and had blast. Lots of memories watching your vids. Thanks again
Another amazing part of your trek. Death Hollow looks so worth the extra time especially on a hot day. I find it fascinating how well your experience has you maneuvering your camera to get some incredible angles and how you keep from knocking it into the rock and such. Other hikers are very lucky they got the chance to meet you in person and talk with you! Thanks for another great video!
Thanks! This is definitely a great area and worthy of a little extra time. And yeah... I definitely learned my lesson the hard way last year re: whacking the camera into rock walls! Thanks again for watching. ✌
Thanks again Jamal! Smiling and laughing this whole video. Yup...any minute now we'll get back to hiking!! LOL!!! Thats doing it right Mr Jamal! Hey BTW, those nesting holes in the rock are made by the elusive 'Diamond Billed Rock Pecker'!! LOLOL!! That beer is going to go down great!
Beautiful! Wow that scenery! Also I love your footage of the American Dipper, or water ouzel, as the bird is known to John Muir. His chapter on the dipper is one of my favorite pieces of writing! Check it out.
Thanks! And yes... I met some guys along the Escalante that told me about the dippers and I meant to add that context to this video -- but forgot. 🙁 They really were fun to watch. Thanks for adding the comment with the added info about Muir -- I'll have to check it out! 👍
The last two days (videos) are areas between Escalante and Boulder that I am not so familiar with. Your pictures show a beautiful area that I need to check out.
It's a great area with a see and a lot of variety. I've taken a few different friends to the area and found it interesting that each had different opinions on what they most enjoyed. They all liked it -- but a few loved Death Hollow and the pools, another enjoyed the arches and the red canyon walls farther down, and yet another was really intrigued by the archeological sites in the area. So... a good sampler platter of Utah in a way! Thanks again for watching. 🌞
Loved this video. I was just there Oct. 1st at the arch (I believe they call it skyline arch?) and the Natural Bridge, during a hail storm. Crossing the rising and rushing waters of the Escalante River was quite the challenge, and the trail had turned into a mud and hail soup with new waterfalls cascading down the cliff sides. What a day, this sure brought back memories.
Thanks! Very cool that you were just there and at a unique time. On one of my previous trips I was there in a big storm and though hiking in the rain wasn't fun, seeing all the ephemeral waterfalls was amazing. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. ✌
I’ve come around completely to the new format but I get the sads when I get home from the salt mine as there’s no new episode, like today 12//9. Sent this episode to my hiking siblings and nephew whom I led down Death Hollow in September and who were too concerned about meals and the location of the next campsite to film or foto much. Now they have beautiful footage to show someone. I was delighted to learn on this trip that I’m as immune to poison ivy now as I was 30 years ago, when I was a camp counselor in Minnesota for a few summers. But in death hollow it was everywhere.
To be fair to my siblings, they had a great time. And I can’t over-emphasize the advantage of having an athletic 17 year old nephew who’s willing to to carry your packs across obstacles and is not too smug about it.
New video is now UP! I hit a few more snags and then my internet was down for a while. Glad the new format is growing on you and wish I could ensure a daily upload, but... looking at the schedule it might be a challenge. All the same... Thanks again for watching. ✌
Bird at 17:07 I believe is called an American Dipper also known as a Water Ouzel (Cinclus mexicanus). The American Dipper is North America's only truly aquatic songbird. To survive in cold waters during the winter, the American Dipper has a low metabolic rate, extra oxygen-carrying capacity in its blood, and an extra thick coat of feathers that includes feathered eyelids.
