  • Monkey Wrench Mike finds a huge problem in his favorite Mercedes! There’s an oiler tube that can break and starve an engine of ehat it needs to survive. Turns out his wasn’t attached!!!

    EXCELLENT instruction, Mike! This is in my permanent MB 560SEC folder! Great idea with the straw!

    They were probably popped off by the super thick oil if it was bastid freezing when you first started it.
    The clips that hold the tubes in place go brittle over time, Plastic+oil+heat cycles = lots of broken bits (just ask BMW😂), so wouldn't have taken too much for the thick, cold oil to pop them out. On the plus side, at least you know the oil pump is strong😎
    FYI, the W140s have similar parts in their heads too😉
    Those rubber mounting blocks on the air cleaner are a service item. Again, oil and heat destroy them over time. Also not so great with solvent cleaners.
    Most manufacturers use them to stop things from rattling around, so should be really cheap/easy to get replacements.
    Those older Mercedes are designed to work, not to impress, which makes them pretty good to maintain. 👍

    I’ve done the same procedure with my 420SEL and one thing you have to watch is the timing chain guides are made out of plastic so they usually need replacing also before they break.

      @ItsTimePictures 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes Yes Yes. And they need to be the genuine Mercedes guides. The generics are known to shatter.

      So I just got home from shooting Freeda’s first outing and she died on me. She would cough and crank but not start. I was terrified the guide rails had broken. But after 45 minutes she started and drove better than ever! Lol

    Always nice to see that you keep this Beauty in good shape - but may I point out: the oil pressure sensor on this car is bad. When you turned the ignition on, the oil pressure needle went up to “3” immediately which it’s not supposed to do cause the oil pressure obviously is “0” when the engine isn’t running. If the needle displays oil pressure anyway that’s a sure sign for a bad oil pressure sensor..

    Good news, the oil line was in place as you started taking the cover off. You clipped the end near the firewall with the cam cover and popped it loose.

    • @archygrey9093
      @archygrey9093 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was still very loose, shouldn't have come off that easy

    You got lucky! Plastic holders shrink over time and the tubes just pop out. Failure starts with holders on cylinder 8 and work their way to the front. Left side first. Can cause catastrophic engine failure if not fixed immediately. These holders should be replaced every 100K miles with timing chain and guides or at least every ten years.

    Since I botched the last one so bad, I have to redeem myself! "Monkey wrench Mike, your assignment which you have already accepted is to bring all your Mercedes back to life!" "At times, to make a simple repair a complicated repair." (As with a recent oil change, perhaps?) This comment will self destruct in 5 seconds"

    Excellent! I think it will take some time to pump up the lifters because you sucked some of the oil out them with the sweeper. It may have started smoothing out later on.

    The shake is probably due to dirty injectors, remove them, clean and test each one. You can do a cheap DIY rig for this.
