I can play the chords and I can strum the tune but for the life of me I CAN'T SING AT THE SAME TIME. As soon as I open my mouth my strumming goes to shit. Why is it so hard?
I wasn't able to sing and play at the same time so I practiced for about two weeks every day and then got bored. The other day my niece got a ukulele and wanted to learn a few tunes and I dusted off mine and suddenly I WAS ABLE TO so I guess all that practice I did before was actually working and I just needed to let it sink in my brain for a bit.

I remember looking this up a year ago when I first got my first ukulele and being completely, utterly overwhelmed. Now I look at it and I think "ooh, fiddly strum, odd timing, a lot of switching.." but I don't even have to think about the chords :) It's a friggin great feeling to see progress :)

Love this song! Thanks for the tutorial! I had such a hard time with the 2nd strumming pattern until I re-wrote it this way “DDD DUDU D DUDU”. Just having letters instead of arrows seem to help me, plus making it obvious that there were two DUDU patterns. Funny how different brains work differently! 🙂

I have so much trouble with the strumming rhythm. I have no problem with memorising the chords and I’m even better at changing between chords (still hard) than the strumming which goes to show how hard I find it haha. Any tips?

How funny, i just learned this song a few days before you put it up, but didnt have a cool strumming pattern, so thanks! I did however learn it in the key of c and i think it sounds a wee better, but this is probably the original key so no complaining here :)
Actually the original key isn't C or G - I think it's E Flat! I've not personally seen it in G myself (I arranged this version from scratch), but thought it works pretty well. Hopefully when you see the cover of it I'm working on you'll like that too!
For a better key, use C. Instead of G, G7 and G maj7, use C, C7, and C maj7. It sounds more like the original song anyway. There's a tutorial using those cords with a better strumming pattern by Jonah Ruth on TH-cam.

I wonder if you can give me some advice on where I could find the kind of Ukulele I'm looking for... My Uncle is a Musician and I told him what I was looking for in a Ukulele and he said I need a CONCERT size uke. 19 fret. Ibenez makes one for a couple of hundred dollars that has a tuner built in and can be played through an amp. He already has a small amp he is giving that works for ukulele or guitar. He is also giving me two Microphone and a stand and a pop shield filter. But I need a PA for that to work cause I don't have my laptop anymore cause it got a virus and crashed. I've seen those portable PA systems but I think he said those would not work with these microphones. I'm not sure what kind of PA I could get that would was not so outrageously expensive and one that doesn't take up a lot of space. Cause I'm limited on space. Even if it was used, as long as it worked with those microphones my Uncle was going to give me, then I would be fine with that. Is there any special deals you have heard of that I could get the kind of ukulele and PA Sound system I might need for a decent price? I could always just show my Uncle any suggestions anybody sends me and he would be able to tell if it would work or not... Yeah, I would like to buy the Ukulele brand new, but if one is Used but still in good shape and is the exact kind my uncle was telling me about, and one that will plug into an amp then I'm interested in checking out one even if it's been used. As long as it's in good shape and works. If the new ones are so terribly expensive and I can find a used one for a better deal I might go that route anyway. Any recommendations you might have would be appreciated.

casuallysydney just keep practicing slowly, you can start humming while strumming, then you can start strum slowly while singing
