  • A look at the brand new 2022 Osprey Exos 48. Hip belt pockets are back!
    In this video I compare the 2022 Exos 48 to the Atmos AG 65 as well as looking at the features built into the Exos 48 which was launched one month ago in April 2022. I want to reduce my pack weight for summer wild camping, and this new backpack will really help with that.
    This video highlights similarities and differences between these two packs, so I hope it helps you to decide if the new Exos 48 is for you.

    I also have the Atmos AG 65, great bag but I agree that the weight of it is quite a bit. I've been looking at the Osprey Talon 44 too for summer camping. Looking forward to your reveiw after you've been out on a few more adventures.

      The Talon can be bought for a good price now, and is just that bit heavier than the Exos. Now that I have the Exos 48, I know that 44 litres would have been more than big enough! Thanks for watching, and I'll be back with an Exos follow-up 👍

    Hey! Thanks for your overview/review! I bought the 2022 Osprey Exos 38 and just came back from a back 8 day trip through the alps (started in Austria, Trins and ended up in Italy, Bolzano). Had to carry around 8-9kg for 155km and the backpack was just amazing. It's durable and easy to use. Can't wait for the next big tour with this amazing gear set! I wish there would be a easier way to attach hiking poles if you dont need them. thats the only issue I had :)

      Hi! I'm glad to hear that your Exos worked well for you. 155 km is a good test! I'm really enjoying mine too, and still get surprised by how light it is. Great overview. Since it’s a new bag out, I’d be more interested to know if you’ve got a chance to use it and if it performed to your expectations. I heard somewhere else that padding is not as great and comfortable. I wanted to know more before I go for Exos 58.

      I've only had the bag out once so far, on a camping trip. I found it to be really comfortable, but don't consider one outing to be enough to give a solid review yet. I'll get a few more miles under my belt with it and will upload a follow-up video with positives and negatives. The only negative so far is a bit of creaking, but I expected a bit of that from a pack with a frame. I love everything else about it so far!

      @joinmeoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Graham. Thanks, I'm glad it was a useful video. Besides the capacity difference, I think the main functional differences that I'd be aware of between the two packs are as follows: Atmos has more padding on the straps, includes a stowable rain cover, and has a zippable bottom compartment. I've carried my Exos 48 loaded to 15 kg and still found it comfy, but perhaps the Atmos would be more comfortable on multi-day hikes with more weight in? That said, it is almost twice the weight of the Exos! Prices are similar, with the Atmos coming in at around £20 more than the Exos. It's quite nip and tuck really! I've also released another video where I discuss my likes and dislikes about the Exos 48, which may help you a bit more 👍

    I would like to see the way you pack your gear in the Exos 48, it seems to me it is too small for the tent, sleeping system, cooking , food etc. I'm still doing my research for the pack, and Exos 58 looks more promising. Exos 58 sits between Atmos 50 and 65 but with less weight, and it looks like a sweet spot to me. What do you think?

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rade. Yes, I would have to say that it is a LITTLE bit small for my winter gear really - particularly when I'm carrying filming gear and my drone. My Atmos 65 is more suitable, but weighs almost 1 kg more than my Exos 48, so you can see why I'm still using the Exos! 😆 I camped last night but used a smaller tent and didn't take my drone. The Exos 48 was juuuust about right for that setup, but still slightly small. The 58 would have been perfect for me, but it all depends on what kit you use.

    • @agatho00
      @agatho00 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me Exos 38 has the perfect size for most backpacking trips. But only because I'm using a trekking pole tent that doesen't use too much space. I use it in the winter too, but only when I'm staying at a shelter, because my winter sleeping bag is double the size the 3 season one.

      I can see how the 38 litre pack works well for you, with your trekking pole tent. I think I might try a smaller pack this summer, just to see if I can make it work. My filming equipment takes up some space too, so I could use even smaller packs if I didn't carry that gear as well 👍

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ryan. I've just had the Exos out (yesterday and today) for the first time, on a wild camp. I noticed some squeaking today, which I don't think was there at first. This was after about 10 miles of walking, with a total pack weight of 12 kg. I didn't have any issues with the adjustable frame though. Is there anything specific I should be looking out for? Although I'd prefer not to have any squeaking, I kind of assume that something made of a mixture of straps and plastic buckles/frameworks buckles will squeak when loaded up. Perhaps I'm being too easy on Osprey here?

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As an update - I manipulated the pack today, to find out where the creaking is coming from. It appears to be coming from the bottom of the metal wire back frame. This lower section runs inside a fabric sleeve, and because the metal wire is very stiff (and very shiny), the fabric is pulled really tight over the wire. When the wire then moves within the fabric sleeve (e.g. when you're walking), it creaks and squeaks. I imagine some form of lubricant would temporarily mute it, or perhaps some felt, but it's a fairly inaccessible area.

    Hi. Thanks for review. I see that the side compression straps run on the outside of the side stretch pockets. Can these compression straps be rerouted/changed, so they will run inside the pocket? Because in the original setup, if you pull these straps also the side pocket gets compressed, and it looks that it will be then difficult to get things in/out from these pockets, like water bottle. Thanks :)

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. That's a good question, and you are absolutely right - tightening these straps against anything packed into the side pockets does make it harder to withdraw/replace any items from/into the side pockets. @joinmeoutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mako5708 I've just had a look, and the compression strap on each side cannot be threaded differently in order to avoid compressing the side pocket. Each side has one strap that runs from the top of the bag to the bottom. There is one adjustor buckle at the top, and one at the bottom, so if you needed to, you could loosen the adjustor at the bottom, use something (e.g. a bottle) from the side pocket, then tighten the strap again afterwards. One thing I like about this pack is all the compression and tidy straps actually, but I do see your concern.

    Osprey's design team, at least for the Exos series, seems to be a combination of geniuses and what have to be some of the stupidest people alive on the planet.
    Every 4 years there's an update to this model(I've had all 3 previous generations in different sizes-5 total), and every time there are marked improvements accompanied by inexplicable changes that degrade the packs to the extent that it seems intentional, while simultaneously making you wonder if they even have an actual backpacker on their staff.
    This time they did away with the eminently practical "over/under" compression straps, which also appears to be true for many other models' most recent iterations.
    On the Exos, they now have them routed to the rear of the hipbelt pockets, too.
    Way to go Osprey..again😒

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You have just highlighted my main "What were you thinking?" observation here. Those straps connected to the hip belts are odd for at least two reasons: 1. Why do I want my bag compression needs to interfere with my hip belts? And 2. When would I ever need to adjust bag compression from the bottom? I get that this arrangement makes them removable, which could be useful (?), but attaching a clip to the lower end of the strap so that you could anchor it to the base of the bag (or just above the side pocket, ideally) would have been more user-friendly. I appreciate your rant and am a bit confused as to why this bag isn't absolutely perfect after four iterations! Thanks for your thoughts! 👍
