    Kind of surprised they wouldn't go with either 1). The P90, due to its size and soft armor penetration capability, or 2). An SBR M4, due to it's higher power, availability of ammo, and a lot already existing with longer barrels. Seems wierd they would go with something like the APC9K.

      Like I bought my GHM9 (semiauto but in the shop they got also AK's, AR's, APC's, SIG's, HK's, FN's and so on) directly in Thun at B&T. They even let me testfire it with a suppressor on it (yes they well tried to sell it, but I could resist).
      Full autos are not that hard and not especially expensive to get here. They're actually forbidden weapons, what means you just need different papers ;)
      An APC is roughly about CHF 3500.- depending on the lower receiver (Glock or B&T mags), barrel length and stock as the main options.

    you forgot a main reason (atleast in my opinion) why police forces make heavy use of submachineguns. Pistol rounds even out of a rifle length barrel tends to over penetrate alot less then a rifle or intermediate round and when most instances your looking at areas with potential civilian casualties (such as in a apartment complex or a hostage situation) you really need to limit that as much as possible

    The M3 was much cheaper to manufacture than the Tommy . In fact if you ever shot one, the bolt looks like an engine's piston. Its a bit heavy but fun to shoot and easy to shoot and keep on target.
    It was primarily issued to troops who's job wasn't to carry a rifle. (Think cook or tank crew) My father was issued one as part of an M4 crew, but after the war in occupied Germany he was issued an M1 until he rotated back home.

They are going to limit artillery and the amount of planes as well as the F35 squadron will go down from 16 to 10. Wonder how this will affect the MEU when they have to do invasions.
      Edit: They say it is for to be better prepared for Island hopping in a Chinese War but from what I remember M4 Sherman’s were pretty effective on Iwo Jima but the Abrams is twice the size. Also I don’t understand why they are limiting AAVs if they want to be amphibious. Let’s just hope this works out.

    • @MtnPeakEnduro
      @MtnPeakEnduro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      A 9mm bullet is twice as heavy as a 5.56mm bullet. It also is moving at about 1/3 the speed so it will penetrate through walls much further than a 556 round. The average weight of the 556 is around 62 grains and moving at around 2300-3000 feet per second depending on barrel length. Leight fast moving projectiles like the 556 tend to fragment when they hit barriers. Pistol rounds that are heavier and slow moving tend to punch through walls easier and keep their momentum. Most law enforcement agencies are ditching SMG's in favor of ar's because the 556 doesnt tend to punch through multiple walls like pistol rounds and has much better terminal balistics.

    • @killianlile173
      @killianlile173 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MtnPeakEnduro You should watch the Tactical Rifleman video on it... sure the 9mm may penetrate a bit more but that means a cleaner wound which is easier to deal with instead of it fragmenting inside someone which is going to be hellish to deal with medically speaking. Also www.gunsamerica.com/digest/ar-home-defense-clay-drywall-raw-meat-myth-busted/ according to these tests yes it does begin to start fragmenting but those fragments still punch through and that means way more chances of harming someone especially cause then you have to dig out that shrapnel.

    I think smg’s will still stick around. It’s just the old philosophy of “the right tool for the job”
    When war was done with melee combat, most soldiers carried a pole arm of some kind and a sword or short sword as their back up weapon. The sword was for close quarters mostly, not a battle field. Same as the smg vs an AR. An AR would suck in tight hallways compared to an smg. But the smg would suck in the open for worse range and accuracy

    I'm old enough to have seen the M3A1 in service while I was on active duty--and I've fired a magazine through one, was armorer-trained on the type, and during the 1990's my arms room had 70 of them in stock. I do have limited range fire experience with the MP-5 (but not in combat!) and a few other submachine guns as well.
    Back in 1938 the US Army wanted a weapon to replace the pistol, the submachine gun, and for some non-riflemen the rifle as well--in 1941 this became the M1 Carbine, a 5.5 pound weapon using a different cartridge from the M1 Rifle and the BAR (aka the Automatic Rifle, M1918A2). During World War Two some 5.5 million M1 Rifles were made and more than 6 million M1 Carbines were produced. By the Korean conflict the M2 Carbine (select-fire) had displaced the submachine gun in the US Army except for armored fighting vehicle equipment and for some special forces applications. Declaring that the M14 Rifle was the replacement for the M1 Rifle, M2 Carbine, M3 Submachine Gun and the BAR didn't make it so--and then there was the M16. Initially the AR-15 was regarded with awe bordering on worshiping magic--the Viet Cong liked them a lot when they could steal them. However, the initial mass-produced M16 quickly got a reputation for being more dangerous to the American rifleman than to the enemy--and Stoner was screaming "SABOTAGE!"
    What does this have to do with the Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) and the submachine gun in that role? The M16 was a credible replacement for infantry submachine guns and the M1/M2 Carbine, and most riflemen really didn't need the "full bore" M14 rifle and 7.62mm NATO cartridge. There was another issue--within 300 meters the M16-armed rifleman had a higher hit probability--beyond 400 meters most riflemen couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with any rifle, even when they could clearly see their target. Submachine guns on rock-n-roll were great within 25 meters, but beyond 50 meters their pistol bullet ballistics were poor even on semiauto--that's why the M1 Carbine was such a WW2 hit. Much of NATO was arming second line troops with cheap submachine guns instead of expensive rifles because the SMG was easier to carry and CHEAP--I did mention SMGs were cheap, didn't I? Besides, the old standard was issuing obsolete bolt action rifles and a few cartridges to second line troops--the SMG could burp out a full magazine with bullets labeled "to any soldier" which was more annoying to enemy raiders than a few single shots that missed. NATO went into panic mode when widespread issue of body armor happened in the Warsaw Pact armies and were in the middle of swapping out to the5.56mm NATO when they put out the PDW requirements: cheap (at least cheaper than their 5.56mm service rifle), compact (more compact than their 5.56mm service rifle), light weight, adequate performance within 150 meters, easy to use, and able to defeat soft body armor.
    The US began using the M4 Carbine in the 1990's--had been using "submachine gun" editions of the AR-15 since the early 1960's with barrels as short as 10 inches. The M4 can be used by any rifleman trained on the M16 family, uses standard magazines and ammunition, most parts interchange between the M4 and M16, and the M4 has better ballistics than any of the PDW cartridges--plus the PDW turned out to be twice as expensive as the M4 and was nearly the same weight--though the various PDWs are more compact. Unless there was a reason why the M4 was unsuitable, the M4 performed better than the PDW--and could a conventional pistol work when there wasn't room enough for the M4?
    Britain's IW family has had a troubled past, but its bullpup design made it more compact--and no PDW can touch the L85 in the accuracy department.
    The PDW still has a role in VIP protection and some special forces applications. Arming vehicle crews--the M1 Carbine never did replace all of the pistols in the US Army--Military Police, tank crews and air crews all kept their pistols. Sometimes there's no room for a shoulder weapon.

      you mean an UZI? yeah, they've existed for while now. Summary on why they didn't catch on, because then you have 2 options. Either:
      1-you gotta move the entire trigger group back, which also moves the moving mass back, to on top of your hand, making it less accurate.
      or 2-you gotta add parts for it to work, which makes it more complex, which makes it more prone to malfunction.
      And on top of that it is also more awkward, and therefore takes more time to reload.
      Do note pistols are semiautomatic and the slide acts as the moving part too because their primary function is to be as small as possible. Smgs have to actually be accurate while shooting in full auto. And an UZI most certainly isn't. It's actually a tad of a piece of shit despite how iconic it is.

    The biggest thing that put the SMG out of general service was the automatic carbine doing its job better. M14 and later the M16 hit harder at longer range. Then the M4 Carbine came out and it was pretty much game over. Sure, the SpecOps boys would occasionally use MP5's due to their portability, but the M4 was just as portable in most cases. The fundamental issue with the SMG is that it uses a pistol round instead of a rifle round. While good against unarmored targets, it's just not going to be effective in the field of battle as a general issue weapon.
    The APC9K is basically a modern Uzi, more of a machine pistol than an SMG. It has a second handle for accuracy's sake, because trying to one-hand an auto-pistol is... not practical. But let's face it, the reason it is being used in the role for protection detail is that it can be carried under a suit coat and not 'show' very easily, meaning they can get away with taking it into places that would frown on M4 Carbines out. And in that role, you really aren't expecting to be going up against body armor, so it *should* be effective.
    Ironically, these very features also make it quite attractive to the criminal community, just like the 'Tommy Gun' was to the mafia. Can't wait until some short-sighted quartermaster 'loses' a couple of these and they make the news in some drug heist.

    • @MPdude237
      @MPdude237 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ArbiterX My question is why are we looking at Submachine-gun as opposed to a Carbine like the MK18, AKS-74U, G36C, or L22A1? My guess is weight, size and recoil since a Submachine gun will usually be lighter and smaller than a rifle and a 9mm, 5.7 or 4.6 will be lighter and smaller(meaning more ammo or more space for other stuff) and have lower recoil, making them easier to shoot, especially for someone whose main task is not to fight the enemy with a rifle. The primary issue I have is that SMGs lack the range and penetrating power of a rifle round. Yes, there are AP rounds for pistols, but they won’t do crap against a steel or composite armor plate that can stop full power rifle rounds.

    • @DragoonZeroAlpha
      @DragoonZeroAlpha 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quicker Cqc, high fire rate sudden suppression at close range, pistol rounds will always be easier to suppress noise, low recoil more rounds on target, weight/size, less over pen if in close to other vip's (traitor guard scenario), and last but not least....armor never covers everything (at least not yet...)
