    Many moons ago, 43 to be exact,I trained to be a jockey. After 2 years and 6 months before my first ride I had a bad accident working a horse one morning.I never got to ride that first race and was content to be a groom/exercise rider. I'm 62 now and still work and train horses. I would have loved to have not gotten broke up but that's life.

      jaroufa1 I am the same age and very broken up but have recently started my horse. He's pretty far from even green broke but very forward and a joy to be up on. I guess life after 60 isn't that bad even when your body doesn't work that well anymore. I have a fast horse under me and that's all it takes to keep me happy.

      Sorry you never got to ride in races. I am 57 now, I went to a different jockey school when Chris was still riding races. He came to visit us and talked to us, 100% class. Never surprised me at all when he did this in his retirement. I was a top student at the school and went on to ride for a few years, but doing the weight was tough for my build. I never hit the big time, but I did it and have great memories from that time in my life.

    Chris is pure class. There's not a former jock alive whom I have more respect for. His ride aboard Touch Gold to steal Silver Charm's Triple Crown bid was the stuff of pure genius. Living legend.

    My late brother was a premiership winning jockey in Australia in the 1960s & friends often asked him for tips. His answer was that if he had any idea what was going to win he wouldn't be getting up at 4 am in the middle of winter to work the horses, then travel to a race meeting to ride some crazy horses that might have a heart attack or break a leg leaving you on the ground waiting for the horses to jump over you. Many accidents happen on the training track while working the horses so you rarely hear about them.
    One of the best female jockeys in Australia was Michelle Payne who won the 2015 Melbourne Cup, the first woman to win in its 155 year history. Despite this fame, she suffered many injuries during her career including a fractured skull, bruised brain, fractured wrist, torn pancreas etc.
    Being a jockey isn't all about mounting a horse in pretty colours on race day before a cheering crowd, it is a very dangerous occupation. I saw a young jockey die in the mounting yard when a horse behind him gave him both barrels to the back of the head & his helmet didn't save him. If you still choose this career, good luck and do you have any sure thing tips?
    Another tip is don't pick a fist fight with a jockey. They might be small, but like lightweight boxers, they are incredibly fit athletes & pack a punch.

    Behind the romanticized façade of thoroughbred horse racing is a world of injuries, drug abuse, gruesome breakdowns, and slaughter. While Eight Belles' death was one very public tragedy, three horses die or are killed after suffering catastrophic injuries during races on tracks across America every single day. This doesn't include the horses who break down during warm-ups or who die from illnesses caused by overwork, travel, and stress.

    TBH the standard of rider displayed in above video are nowhere near the standard required to safely ride in races, the step from work rider to race riding is significant and I would suspect they would even struggle to be in control in a piece of work. Having said that they are on the right path and I would imagine in the coming years they might make it to the track.
    Here in Ireland we have produced a large proportion of world-class jockey. Our success in doing so is attributed to the framework in place for kids who want to be jockeys.
    Long before these kids apply for a licence they have been pony racing (watch video “Omey Island Beach Pony Racing” for a little insight) and are accustomed with what to expect in the coming years.
    Most kids who are serious will attend a 42 week course at our racing school the Racing Academy and Centre of Education (google it) and I don’t think it costs 27000 (I think you may even get a grant to attend but I stand to be corrected).

    • @Oakleaf700
      @Oakleaf700 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      1111rory Well, Ireland does have some reasonable jockeys, I suppose..and it does produce a good horse or two ;)..joking aside, I agree, Ireland is steeped in horses and riding. England is as well, but the Irish horses are top class.

    • @obscurelyvague
      @obscurelyvague 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds odd. A jockey school for kids. The problem with wanting to be a jockey when you are a kid is that you don't yet know if you will stay under 5 feet tall when you are an adult and all those riding lessons may become useless.

    Kudos Out To Chris, You're doing a great job with NARA!! ! So nice to see how dedicated McCarron has remained to the racing industry! Nice way to give back to the sport where he'd earned such great successes! Chase Roberts, without ever having had any experience in the irons.. Appears to have a nice seat on a horse. I do know,. a jockey has to love horses, to last very long in this industry! Nothin' easy about it. A very demanding lifestyle Especially for new Bugs! Good Job Chris!!

      It doesn’t hurt them (seriously, they are different from regular crops, they don’t hurt me when you hit them they seriously don’t hurt them), you can only use the whit 7 times which is not a lot. I’m not ranting at all by the way, I work in racing but still have friends that don’t like it. Its just a lot of people thing they have the crap beaten out of them when that really isn’t the case. Most of what you s is the jockey waving the whip, which makes it look like they are hitting them like 50 times.

And then I got told that they where basically just showing the horse the whip most of the time in races not actually hitting the horse.

      ***** Actually it's the sound that does it, also, i agree that it hurt them. however 4 years ago they changed the crop to one that no longer hurts, the crop that doesn't hurt works just as well. Also how did you brake them and how long ago?

    Racing has it's dangers for jockeys. I've personally seen ugly spills at the races. In the end they'll be in the business for themselves. And in the business they learn what the ganeral public don't know. That racing is made of two parts: PROFITCAPPING and HANDICAPPING. At google.com you can learn much more. Handicapping predicts order of finish and horse(s) that'll win. Profitcapping predicts money to be made in months. Jockeys have many reasons for riding.

    I think if anything, I'd love to become a trainer or an exercise rider, or perhaps both one day! I think the demands for a jockey are too tough for me to meet personally and being a girl I'd have it tough. Also exercise riding seems to be a far more stable job then being a jockey.

    • @horsey757
      @horsey757 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could become a stable lass its a great job but you have to realy live horse's to do it. The hours are long and all the work is outside in the rain snow and sun but the reward is the best ever when the horse you have looked after ridden fed cleaned and cared for 7 days a week crosses that finish line first it is so nice. If you want to be a stable lass and are under 18 you have to attend a school there is the Northan racing collage. And the British racing school both are very good . And very cheep to attend

      It actually does not matter. Jockeys who "love" horses still mistreat them . It is the culture of being a jockey.

      Silkenbutterfly7 don’t get your self into that. Choose a different aspect of riding. The riding industry is cruel and once a horse has fulfilled their purpose( making money) they are killed or sold on. The horses are started way too young and often have bone and muscle damage later in their lives and it’s far too much stress and pressure on a horse that hasn’t matured and fully grown. Injured horses are shot and don’t receive medical attention. It’s not worth getting into it

    • @mysticdesire
      @mysticdesire 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Excuse me?! The riding industry is not cruel. The racing industry and the Tennessee walking industry is cruel. If you were an equestrian then you wouldn't say that. You are clearly non equestrian, and stop getting in the way of his/her dreams. I ride horses and I do show jumping. So far, NONE of the horses get killed on the circuit. I don't know where you got this from, but you're clearly non equestrian.

Jockeys are considered athletes and it is very hard to become a competitive-level athlete whether it is weightlifting, triathlete, swimmer , tennis player, golfer etc etc.
      Most just have to settle to participate for fun and be a weekend athlete. Just ride the merry-go -round

    Horse racing is deadly and cruel to horses after they can't race anymore the horse that made the trainer millions is sold at a auction for a couple hundred, if they don't get bought they go to a kill pen to die and be sent to other countries to be eaten by people. Why should we care about the jockeys who choose to go in this dangerous competition, but when the horses are forced to run to its death we don't blink an eye because the trainers make Profit of of the horses pain. hundreds of horses don't even make it to the track because they die during training. Others break legs so then the owner gets someone to do a surgery and 2 days later the horse is out running miles on the track again. All race horses are given "preformence boosters" and shots and given supplements so they run faster and have more energy. They also hit the horse with crops leaving big painful bruises on a Horses skin . When racehorses are rescued they usually have arthritis, and have marks on there legs from surgeries and treatments. Please don't go to races HORSES PAY WHEN PEOPLE WANT TO WIN

    The body weight of a jockey is close to anorexic, and that's really creepy.
