    Physical attributes and breeding are of course important, but to me the most important ingredient for a champion is "Heart", that indefinable element that sets a horse apart from their contemporaries. Perhaps the closest definition is "attitude", the determination to win. That can only even be glimpsed and hopefully recognised once the animal has started training. I have witnessed a number of horses who many claimed, had absolutely no business at all even being at the racetrack, defy all odds and detractors to become champions.

      I own a beautiful chestnut mare (Babooshka) who’s an Irish ex racehorse (sure this was the yard she was trained on....names are familiar but could be wrong!), and even through a broken leg on 2018 and a blunt trauma to her left eye resulting in her losing the eye completely this December just gone....her soul and spirit encompasses all the beautiful, wonderful qualities mentioned. Her heart is so big and so brave. I will never own anything else but these incredible souls!
      And watchgoose I couldn’t agree more, people just don’t know. My girl is so kind and spirited....that tells me that before I loved her...others did.

    All these people saying the jockeys whip the horses during the whole race! Get your facts straight!! A jockey is allowed to use the ON the horse x number times! The number can change from each country and from the length of the race. But we're talking 5-8 and not 30!! Usually it is 7 times for Flat races and 8 times for Jumps race. More and they're disqualified, finned or banned from racing for x days, and believe me, no one wants that. The jockey swings the whip and because of wind and physics and shit the whip makes a noise, and it's that noise that tells the horse to go faster. Plus we're not talking about a dressage whip that WILL hurt if whipped to hard but a specially designed whip especially made for racing. If you really want to criticize the use of a whip then go to the little ponygirls and angry riders who definitely shouldn't always carry a whip.

    All horses, race or otherwise, push from the REAR. The front legs are only "props" basically. As an equine PT, I rarely have to fix front end problems in racehorses, mostly the hamstrings (that's in the hind end) and the lumbar region (that's in the lower back).

    It's not circular, it is OVAL. To get a mile track, it actually has to be bigger than a mile. Long straightaways. Haven't you ever seen a track? No circles. Wide turns.

  • @watchgoose
    @watchgoose 11 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The whips have a flat piece on the end usually and this makes a slapping noise that pushes the horse on. It is more noise than pain, believe me. Sometimes the jockey is only waving the whip alongside the horse, as well, never touching him. You need to work around racehorses for a while before making such pronouncements.

    I see a whole bunch of people claiming horse racing is evil, but I have yet to see any evidence that supports this that isn't biased. What I HAVE seen is jockey's only waving the whip, horses being rehomed after racing to good homes, horses being handled with love by the grooms, and horses doing what they love to do at that age with that much energy. I'm not going to say it's all fuzzy and warm - drugs and abuse probably happens somewhere in the industry. But do any of you have evidence that happens EVERYWHERE? =) Just a thought.

    • @wildog47
      @wildog47 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      not every drunk driver gets into an accident. so should people drive drunk? not every racehorse is abused, but many are so we shouldn't be forcing them to race. the horse doesn't care about winning. people do.

    • @VietFiddle
      @VietFiddle 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The abuses is not the racing, but after the horses are retired. If there is no racing, there is no retiring. That means horse racing is bad, for its consequences.

    • @VietFiddle
      @VietFiddle 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eating pork are bad - for killing the pigs. Therefore, pork farms are as bad as horse farms. All animal farms are bad, for the interest of human rather than animals.
      If you take the human side rather than animal side, you should support all animal farms, horse racing, zoos, etc. Of course, horse racing is for the rich. You do not say the money to buy a race horse can help many poor families. It is out of topic.

    2: people always say this, if it was as cruel as it looked would they still be aloud to do it? No! ever seen horses play fight? its 10x rougher than a man with a whip. The whip is like a wakeup call, it probably hurts a tiny bit but doesn't bother the horse. You will get some horses that as soon as you whip them they pull up. That is a sighn of a horse not liking the whip. Horses never come in after a race with anymarks or scratches from the whip :)

    Also not true. Lots of horses race for years without winning, but they still earn their keep by doing well. And when retired, they can go to breeding farms, or be sold to be hunter jumpers, or trail horses, or even handicapped riding horses! They will be sold to other-breed industries to be crossbred for Warmbloods. A Tb can be a super companion horse.

    Here is what makes a great horse. A good stride. All four feet hit the ground like the spokes of a wheel. Have to have that above all else. All that is inherited from the dam. It's programmed into the spine just above the withers. Cannot be changed. Then they must have the mind for it. Many a great horse I've seen just didn't want to run. Then after that a good heart and lungs and sound legs. Confirmation is a criteria but not so much, a good horse can compensate. Find that horse and you'll have the second Zenyatta.

    It is a Federally-controlled legal sport, not a contest. You have to be fingerprinted by the FBI to be an owner, trainer, jockey, vendor, etc. in the back barn area. Does that sound like a contest? It's because of pari-mutuel betting - all controlled by the Feds.

    um. not. Perhaps an adult human. These are just babies. Would you take your 2 or 3 year old and run him around the track with a whip. These horse bones and ligaments aren't even developed yet and most sustain permanent damage. I was a groom at a thoroughbred training facility and what I witnessed made me sick sick sick

    These horses have nothing to laugh about. Everyone really believes that these beautiful animals but all have what they need, but that's a lie. Do not düren to pasture, because you worry about the legs. You will only be held separately. Horses are herd animals. I have compassion with each of these Pfere. Have they ever thought about why Eight Bells is first passed through the target, and then with a double leg fracture collapsed. That's not natural.

      Wild House Of Pet's: You are right. If anyone would care to go to the 1973 Belmont race for the Triple Crown you will see the Great Secretariat being hand ridden all the way to victory and then some! Sham, was a great contender for Secretariat. View the race! He is literally being beaten by his jockey Laffit Pincay! Ron Turcotte Secretariat's jockey even remarked that he felt bad for Sham! Now, IMHO when jockey's see that a horse is so far ahead that their horse could never catch up, they should be able to concede. By doing this they can save a horse's life. These horses break down, it is so sad! Sham came in last, had a severe leg injury and never raced again after the 1973 Belmont! Then there are horses who never respond to the whip! So really what's the point?

      @@lired70 The padded stick (it is not a whip, that is just the centuries old term) is not there to make horses go faster, it is to communicate to them when maximum effort is needed. Because horses DON'T KNOW HOW FAR THE RACE IS. A human running a marathon knows not to sprint flat out from the start because they'll be out of energy long before the race is over. But a racehorse cannot read the papers, or talk to the jockey, so they don't know whether they will be running 6 furlongs or three times that far. Horses are taught to conserve their energy until the jockey lets them know when it's time for maximum effort, and that is communicated via a couple of slaps with the padded stick. There is so much misinformation put about by left-wing activists, none of whom are actually animal lovers, in fact they wouldn't even know which end of a horse the carrots go in. "Whipping" is not about forcing horses to run, but is a method of communicating with them in a way that teaches them to race intelligently. Human athletes can learn this verbally, horses can't.

      Well, in the US racing scene, there was a better horse than Secretariat. His name was Man O War. He always comes out on top, with every professional poll, including Bloodhorse. So, because he was before our time, people forget about him. Same with other racehorses from other countries. People only remember the racehorse that they saw race, or from their own time. That doesn't take away the greatness of horses from before our time. I suppose I am agreeing with you, you really don't know who could beat the famous horses, because so many have existed. What about the many thoroughbreds that never raced? Hunter/Jumpers? What about the difference between track conditions today, compared with track conditions 100 years ago? What about iron shoes compared to the aluminum shoes they wear today? What about hand timing of old, compared to the sophisticated timing devices of today? How do you really know who was truly fast?

      @@gerrycoleman7290 No, you do not need to educate me. I have been a hotwalker, groom, pony girl and exercise rider. My family has also owned racehorses. There are good people and bad people in horseracing, but the good far outweigh the bad. I have encountered the worst people in boarding stables off of the track. Those are the people you should go after, not people in racing. They are not shining the spotlight on them, but they should be. The time to worry about racehorses is when they leave the racetrack.That is when they become vulnerable. I once had a list of eighty five former runners that I was searching for. I only found two. I have adopted retired racehorses. They could not be retrained. They are the hardest ones to re-home. They are now pets, but having horses as pets is too expensive for most people. Funds need to be put aside while horses are still running to care for them in retirement, but most owners do not even think about it. The biggest problem are the breeders who breed too many horses, substandard horses, and yes they start them too early.

      Not all American horses are better. I'm from the US, and I remember watching Secretariat race. But I personally think Man O War was better. The problem is, the greatest horses from Ireland, England, Australia, and Japan, just to name a few countries, never had the opportunity to race each other. And let's not forget where American thoroughbreds came from. I should mention Canada, because they have had horses that beat the US horses. Native Dancer comes to mind. Recently, European horses have started to come and race here. I watched a breeders cup race where the English horse annihilated our US thoroughbreds. And another horse from Ireland won by 4 lengths. I honestly can't remember these horses names, only which country they represented. You may be able to look up at least the breeders cup race where a British thoroughbred won. It is okay to love the horses from your own country. I do. I think Secretariat was one of the greatest of all. I'm just saying, there are great horses outside the US as well
