  • Power stations and industrials plants need large amounts of cooling water, which they usually take out of rivers. If there is no rainfall for a long time this often leads to periods of low water. In summer months this can be further intensified by evaporation which is higher at that time of year. Therefore, in such situations the withdrawal and discharge of cooling water is restricted for not further increasing the temperature of the river. In order to avoid temporary shutdowns the technologies and practices currently used for cooling and supplying power stations and industries along the rivers have to be reviewed. It must be ensured that they can cope with scenarios implying water levels being more frequently low due to climate change.
