I saw them in 2000 at Jones Beach N.Y. 3rd row. Kansas opened for them. Was perfection. They should be seen outside on a summer night with a nice breeze. I loved every second. They sounded so outrageous! 🎶❤🎶
All those day glow freaks who used to paint their face. They've joined the human race. Somethings will never change.. If you grew up in the late 70's and 80's YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THIS SONG MEANT!! Love, love,❤❤ this band!!
Fantastic, just such a iconic and wonderfully put together idea of a band. Fagen and Becker decided early on to put the absolute best studio stuff out possible and make a living on record sales. You could really do that back then. They would go out and find the best studio and session musicians in the world to play the parts. The guitar solo here on Kid Charlemagne was done on the album by a session guitarist named Larry Carlton, and it was widely recognized as one of the best lead guitar solo's ever. That is not to in any way put down the wonderful work done here by Jon Herington. Wow. Good stuff
Met Owsley outside Warfield Theatre / Garcia and Grisman/ he was selling 1000$ belt buckles on the Dead tour dude had a vibe so thick it was like a force field.
What an outstanding performance by one of the best groups ever. Is Jon Herington not an amazing guitar virtuoso? I only wish that someone would have advised the backup singers which key the song is in.
Don’t forget he’s playing down a path that was cleared and cut by Larry. He’s literally just following the exact modal outline. It is likely the best guitar tone of all time however, if there is any virtuosity herein it lies.
The video looks like it was shot on a flip phone with analog audio which is probably the reason the backup singers don't sound right. They are the same ones who have been performing with SD for years and can probably sing this song in their sleep. No matter though, I love this song no matter how it was recorded!!!
@@DocRockTheDj Maybe you were being facetious about the flip phone but this was a recording of the in-house feed to the video boards which was SD at the time. Bands usually send mono audio to the room. There were 4 cams, 2 with 55x lenses in “Crow’s Nests” on pillars out front and 2 handheld cams, one at the end of an aisle(that’s why you see audience blocking the shot at times), and one on stage right. Curious about who posted this. There would have been only one copy made and given to a rep of the band. I’m not objecting, just curious.
My wife and I were at this concert. We had a half-drunk guy next to us almost the entire concert who, after every song, would chant “Kid Charlemagne! Kid Charlemagne!” He finally got his wish towards the end of the song list. And it was worth waiting for.
has always sounded amazing he sounds just like when he started out /he dont change it up keeps it like -the recording amazing great ------i remember listening to this in my 1970 mustang in -1976 never forget it- i bet i played it 10 times that night - love it today just as much as them -thanks steely dan for all the amazing music
“ is there gas in the car “ the single line that fully captures that whole period of uppers , downers , laughers , screamers , acid , coke , mescaline, shrooms , MDMA and I forget what else because the drugs listed above
I read an interview with Jon where he said Becker and Fagen told him he doesn't have to recreate the solos note for note but just match the feeling. Guess it works since he's always on the scene.
Certain things are only lessened when artistic freedom is allowed. You don’t interpret perfection with your own style, and anything that includes a Larry Carlton solo is perfection. And you don’t alter perfection!
That is ridiculous. You think they put someone as great as Jon Herington in their band just to play note for note original guitar solos? They could hire a much less talented guitarist to do that. Not to mention who wants to see a live band playing the studio version of any song? Be happy that every musician on the stage is a top player.
Being that Augustus Owsley Stanley III aka Bear was the Grateful Dead's benefactor, and financed them when living in Watts, among other ways, i always hear the lyric, "Your low-rent friends are dead", is kind of a shot at them.
Great solo but not quite Larry Carlton good! Saw SD live in 94 and Carlton clear back in 81. The Cuervo Gold, the fine (actual) Columbian made those nights a wonderful thing. 🤘🏼✌🏽👍🏼❤️
Turn that jungle music down, at least until we're out of town. And while you're at it: pour me a Cuban Breeze Gretchen. Because I know what happens, I read the book at Rudy's and was very high. (Got a case of dynamite, I could hold out here all night)😮😊😮😊
One thing you can say about Donald Fagen is he’s not just another pretty face, but then the same goes for his partner, Walter Becker as well. They weren’t your typical front men in a band, but fortunately got over their stage fright and made a lot of money touring. Wish I could see Fagan live now with Michael McDonald and Boz Skaggs who were touring as the “Dukes of September” a while back after Becker died.
This is probably one of the best guitar solos ever written.
Improvised, so he says . . .
This solo is a love letter to Jerry Garcia. Improvised, I believe... But not without inspiration.
written .....no just improvised....written in another way
Mr Larry Carlton I believe
And played poorly here. Larry Carlton was much better.
Jon Herrington guitar solo is incredible!
El solo lo creo Larry Carlton.Los demás lo interpretan y le hacen una que otra modificación.
O M G !!!!! that guitarist is a Monster !! Put his own mark on that classic Carlton solo >> Thanx Ya'll >>>>J D
Jon Herington is impressive.
I fully agree, Herington is a genius!
whatever genre of music you prefer you must understand the greatness of steely dan.
Walter becker was a brilliant guitar man

Perfection AND grace.
Kansas as the OPENER is crazy. What a lineup.

The backing singers OMG , I think they had a great time on this gig !

💎 You Crossed A Diamond With A Pearl 🦪
Amazing take on the iconic Larry Carlton solo by Jon Herington!
RIP two brilliant men of sound and spirit- Walter and Owsley. World is less sonically sumptuous without you both. Ty great upload.
Curious…who is Ty?
@@rwefree9469 thank you :)

Love this song. Big Steely Dan Fan. For over 50 years. What happened to 50years ?
@@DebbieFord-e2i reeling in the years!
Never thought of it. But must be a time loop or something ❤
Jon Herington is smooth as silk ! clean.
Yep I was at Pine Knob that Night 👍👍👍👍🎹🎹🎹🎺🎺🎸🎸🎸🎷🎷🎷🥁
Yep
I saw them at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in 1994. They were awesome. One of the greatest bands of all times.
Saw them in Columbus, Ohio on the same tour. Legendary. 🤘🏼👍🏼❤️
the underratedness of the underrating makes this whole underrated thing underratable

Amen about the background singers. Sounds so bad.
Thank you...I thought the backing singers were off.
I knew Keith Carlock is the drummer but I didn't know he'd been the drummer for this long!

My favorite SD track!
Royal Scam might be my favorite Steely Dan album.
As always, Keith Carlock is a badass.

There should be a mandatory minimum for daring to change one note of the original Larry Carlton solo. Cool solo. See you in 5 years.

I saw Larry at the Catamaran in San Diego and the next day took a guitar lesson from him. I still remember every note!
Wow...this is the first time EVER that I saw Steely Dan butcher one of their songs, but I'm still a huge fan of theirs and allways will be.

When I was a kid and got my first SD album (Aja), my older brother told me they didn't tour much because they were too ugly. Lmao!
Great job but how about wooly bully watch it now 😮
