My favourite part about seeing this movie wasn’t even the movie, it was the fact that the theatre I went to was packed full of adults. I legit don’t think there was a single person below the age of 15 going to see Minions during that showing. (I’m 21 for reference).

I was 11 and I went there
I went to a drive-in theater and I was next to a truck of about three 20-something dudes. People can say what they will about the Minions being cringe or a cheap cash grab, but they're doing SOMETHING right. Heck! My mom asked me how it was when I got home. She was legitimately interested in it and I almost never see her interested in a cartoon.

While I didn't mind the Minions too much, I fully agree that Gru and Wild Knuckles forming a bond and their interactions were definitely the best parts of the film as well as its emotional core (even if it's a fairly small one). Just a really sweet relationship that we definitely could've used more of, and it makes me hope we get more from this character... somehow. I mean he's probably dead now given that the Despicable Me films take place like 30-40 years later, but I wouldn't mind a couple flashbacks to Gru learning from him or something like that. Also: "Villain version of Pixar's Up" that's a brilliant idea and someone needs to get on that.
One last thing: was anyone else kinda taken aback by just how messed up Gru's near-death was during the final battle, where he was tied to the clock hands and nearly got his arms ripped out of their joints? Like, his repeated screams of pain in that scene sounded pretty legit, and I was just kinda like "...Wow, this is kinda fucked up". Between Belle Bottom and Scarlett Overkill, Illumination seems to have a thing for making absolutely sadistic villainesses.
Maybe Sing 3 will follow that path with a villainess who plays on Buster Moon’s flaw of making promises he can’t keep.

My friend who is 15 is very excited to watch this movie tomorrow! Her mom is very strict, and she hardly goes out... so this is really the first time in months she's going to the theater! When she told me she was excited to watch minions 2 I was like "dude, we're 15... how are you.." but now I understand. I'm happy for her! I hope she ha a great day :)

I remember being like 20 when the first one came out, and my dad in his 70s had forgotten I was that old and kinda dragged my Mom and I to go see the first one. I almost thought to drag my Mom and Dad's ashes to see the 2nd because he rather enjoyed the 1st one. Haven't because something tells me the people at the ticket counter wouldn't be too happy bringing a vary large box into the theater and not beleave me it's my Dad's ashes to see a movie.

Minions may have been a extremely bad movie, but you got to admit it has A LOT of character. That's one of the reasons I actually like the original minions, because the characters feel like the directs put actual character into it. It's such a dumb film and that's why I prefer it over despicable me 2 and 3. I haven't seen minions 2 but I don't have as big hopes it's like the first minions. Obviously the best film in the series is dispicable me 1.
Honestly Herb, Vector, and Bratt are the characters with the most personality in the entire series.
I really wish I could see Despicable Me 2 even if it's terrible. For some reason that's the only one I have trouble finding on any streaming service the few times I think of it and investigate. I didn't see it in theaters because I didn't care that much, it got a middling response, but I wanted to watch it eventually because I liked the father-daughter dynamics in the first movie and I wanted to see how Gru would handle dating a spy. It's like they disowned that movie and I don't know why...

Dispicable me 2 is good but it feels like it was made for marketability (purple minions) and I feel the only likeable character is El macho and whatever his chickens name is.
Hearing this guy talk about his audience supprised me because the theatre me and my friends were in (we watched it ironically) was packed with people in suits with minions plushes screaming and cheering and clapping such an amazing atmosphere
Let's be honest... the minions have overstayed their welcome in pop culture...
It'd be like if Star Wars made an entire movie series that revolved around the Ewoks except the Ewoks had an actually complex in universe lore that would make it somewhat interesting.The Minions main appeal is that they're cute and can withstand a comical amount of physical damage, usually caused by themselves.
I wouldn't even go so far as to call them genuine characters as their major contribution is to provide a notable and recognizable presence rather than genuine plot advancement. What they are are mascots.

I really enjoyed this movie, it kept me engaged the whole time atleast. I loved the 70s setting and movie references. My expectations were low, but this movie really did surprise me. I thought this movie was more focused on Gru, rather than the minions like in the last movie.
I liked the character designs of the villains and their cars were an awesome touch!
Illumination could of made this movie terrible, with 0 effort and would still make pleanty of money. But I felt that effort really was put into this film, the call backs to previous despicable me films were fun!
i'm glad someone has some sense when criticizing this movie. Everyone else is giving it heavy praise and little actual criticism.
The pacing is too fast, the story is kind of there but there was not really a main focus. Too many plot points, and many forgettable characters...

Because this is an Illumination film, am I the only one who is absolutely surprised that Minions 2 has been getting the Into the Spider-verse treatment (I *adore* this movie as much as the next guy, one of the most ultimately amazing Sony Pictures Animation movies up to the ranks of Arthur Christmas) considering the fact that this is also a Minions movie and the original people either like or (mostly) hate?

I saw this movie to get a rough idea for how the Mario movie MIGHT feel. The guy who wrote the screenplay (Matthew Fogel) is also the guy writing the Mario movie. The directors of the Mario movie (Aaron Horvath
, Michael Jelenic) are the guys behind Titans Go and a few other animated movies that were actually good (or at least enjoyable).
Now, this gives me hope the Mario movie, in the very least, won't be bad. Will it be as good as Sonic 2? That's hard to say. Though, it is funny that Sonic and Mario are competing in an entirely different field again.
It was fun so heck if mario is like this I'm OK with it.

Personally I would like a despicable me movie focused around the girls and wether they will become heroes, dancers, villains or something else.
this film is a cultural resonance, has changed a fundamental view in many mental industries, it is a nugget in the current realities of the fall.

I quite enjoyed this film, though that may stem from my exceedingly low expectations along with the fact that I watched for the memes with a friend. The jokes were a 60% miss, and a lot of the plot was forgettable. The villains were boring (except the nun), but there were some quite sweet moments between Gru and the Knuckles guy. Overall it got a couple laughs out of me and was simply a movie in which you could turn off your brain.

I literally just saw this movie last night with my friend and her sisters. Honestly, I walked in expecting not to be too impressed. But after it….I thought it was cute, I really liked Bob. Bob is baby and I’m a sucker for cute characters.
Yeah, I didn’t laugh much. If anything, it got a smile out of me and a chuckle at the karate scenes. But I think the movie overall was adorable. It felt very short, but it wasn’t a bad time. I’m not mad😌
First you gave a review to The Owl House: A nearly flawless series that is so damn good with story telling (same can be said for Amphibia), to a generic kids film that's pretty much the definition of "meh".
I like how you can tell gru took a bunch of inspiration on his house style and furniture based on wild knuckles house. Also noticed dean from iron giant on some people magazines/pamphlets in the movie, but maybe I was just overanalyzing lol
The minions are conveniently missing during the 1930s and 40s, but they have been active since the 60s. That means they have determined Gru to be more evil than any of those serial killers or ISIS. So what is illumination implying?
in the Despicable Me (I believe) the banker mentioned "Younger villain" referring to Vector. But in the Rise of Gru, Vector age is about the same as Gru 🤔
I like Despicable Me and the sequel. They were fun and cute. But the minions movie I pretty much hated. Not sure how much I care about seeing this. Might watch it out of curiosity on streaming when it gets there. I will say minions marketing is genius! They been milking this thing for over a decade.
The annoying thing is it feels like Illumination is the model Disney wants to fallow.
My friends and I smuggled bananas into the theater and I ate all of them. Never had so much fun watching a movie. 11/10
This is, without a doubt, one of the greatest movies of all time. The cinematography, the writing, the acting, it's all there. During the movie I cried multiple times out of pure happiness.

It’s a mix of mainly French and Spanish and sometimes but less commonly Italian, German, and once even Japanese. I mainly understood the most common Spanish and French, but that’s always what they spoke.

All jokes aside. Its fun. When you go to movies like this you shouldn’t be expecting some super cool well written movie. I gru up with despicable me, and seeing all the references was pretty neat. I wasn’t critiquing, just having a good time at the movies.
8:30 AXKSHUALLY in the first Despicable Me film, the emphasized reason that Gru was turned down for a loan was that the bank guy was looking for villains "younger than you, /hungrier/ than you, */YOUNGER/* than you" and immediately after the fact mentioned Vector as young. Long story short Illumination irrevocably shattered the continuity of the Despicable Me franchise 0/10 it's unwatchable now

It makes sense. Gru by despicable me 1, is like late 40s early 50s and vector is late 30s early 40s. That's about a 10 year time gap, gru is 12 in rise of gru, and from the picture we see of vector he looks about 2-4. Clearly younger than gru. Checks out.
It’s definitely the best movie ever, it’s so good that it reaches the exact same power as morbius. When Gru told his minions he was going to rise and steal 100 grubillion dollars, the crowd cheered at the theatre. The minions were amazing and at some point in the movie, you could clearly hear Bob say “It’s rising time” 10/10
Say about Illumination what you want, but they know what kind of movies they want to make. Love them or hate them, they don't pretend to be more than they are. I hust kinda miss the time when their movies were about a villain finding his place instead of funny yellow guys.

Went to the movies to watch it with my friends, that was the funnest I’ve had all summer, minions rise of gru was a 9/10.
That abrupt ending of "there are better ways of killing one hour and a half" made me think it was super clever for half a second by pulling a "you just wasted over an hour watching a Minions review" but then I realized the video didn't last one hour and a half because that would be stupid and now I feel stupid too

I think vector is supposed to be younger. In the first movie the bank teller (forgot his name) was belittling Gru and said that there were other villains and he specified them being younger then he immediately mentioned Vector and the fact he stole a pyramid. I think it was a continuity error because they thought fans wouldn’t recognize the bank teller so they had to cameo vector

Tbh, my dad and sister just wanted to see the movie because my sister loves going to the movie theater and my dad loves minions movies. So I went with them only because I haven’t been to a movie theater since 2019 before Covid had hit. Overall, the movie was amazing! I would watch it again! (but probably just one more time because I’m good at remembering things) I’m a teen but I thought the movie was funny and I didn’t really expect anything when I came to see the movie so I was invested.

As a 20 year old atm, saw the movie this night with my best friend in costume. We had a blast and both unironically had a good time watching it. For me, it certainly was more than a meme.

You know, this is actually one of the better Illumination films in general (I mean the bar is set pretty low) but comparing to the first 2 Despicable Me's, it's not too shaby.
Illumination actually put in some heart into the movie.

As someone who saw both this movie and the original Minions, I can definitely say that this is the better of the two prequels. However, I FULLY agree that it should have focused more on Gru and his relationship with his mentor. The minions could have easily been side characters like Dug was in Up or the Minions were in the original Despicable Me films. Unfortunately though, the Minions have become the mascot characters of Illumination and in the eyes of Illumination, that meant the Minions had to steal the spotlight.

Movie was truly a movie, one scene stood out as the scene of all time, when gru was going to save his minions, he goes to his enemies yelling “ IM GRUUUUU-ING” then begins to gru all over them, it was a breathtaking experience and truly one of the movies of all times, perhaps coming close to morbius.

I watched this movie the first time with my family for our bonding Saturdays- I enjoyed it and thought it was pretty cute but nothing to rave home about though.
totally agree that there was a better movie in there between Gru and Wild Knuckles with little to no minions. Instead i went to 2 hours of noise at my sisters request, she was the only child in the room, and didn't even laugh.
Yeah, I watched the first despicable me as an 11 year old and liked it. I was 14 when the second one came out, sooooo... I watched about half and got bored. I could not understand the obsession with the minions. They were fine in the background, but I honestly couldn't stand them. I have 2 younger cousins (8 and 10 years younger than me) who were all over that nonsense. So I still had to hear about it every time I saw them. After watching this, I'm a little disappointed at how the trailers frame it. It looked like it could have been enjoyable if they didn't make everything about the minions. I want to see more about gru and the big bads, it seems interesting. But no, it's another money grab. :/

Honestly the movie was pretty good and I’d say it’s pretty fun unironically I definitely went to watch it for the meme but I also already was a fan of the despicable me movies anyway so it was nice to see Gru again
