I've had this turntable since 2020. I picked it up from best buy for $149.99. I love it. Switch the stylus to the lp gear elliptical, get a rubber platter mat and a record weight. It sounds amazing paired to a Marshall Bluetooth speaker.
@@Recordology also, what if i have a different mat, like acrylic mat. Do i still put the other mat the turntable came with first? And then the acrylic mat?
Cool video. I bought this turntable this pass February 2024 and I have it paired with the Sony STR DH190:receiver the Sony SSCS5 speakers and I’ve been very happy with it. I think it sounds very good. Pair this with an Onkyo DXC 390 six cd CD’s changer and I’m in for $892 not bad for my first system in years
I've had this turntable for 5 years in my secondary setup. I bought the Sony based on name (as a 90s teen I'm a Sony sellout) and styling. It just looks better than the LP60 or other equivalents. A worthy upgrade when you need to replace the stylus is the LP Gear Carbon Fiber elliptical stylus which I have been using for years and sounds fantastic with this turntable.
Mr. Recordology, I have to agree with you on Sony turntables. Back in 1977 I bought a Sony EX-1 all in one turntable and radio. Sound was nothing great. It had programable play on tracks and auto return feature. Stylus had to be changed every 50 hours of listening. Unit had passive radiator speakers which were poor. Price was $199 then. Saw two exams on Ebay for sale now.
What did you do to the stylus to make it only 50 hours of lifespan? Even caramic styluses go way beyond 50 hours of playing before it need to be changed.
It is a Hanpin made turntable. The Sony version is adequate turntable mostly because you are stuck with the AT-3600L. The AT-LP 70 is better for the fact it has the AT-95 cartridge. The one I encountered also had a bizarre groan when the arm moved back and forth. I just think it is a little expensive for what you get. I hoped it tracked a little lighter as Phansteihl makes an eliptical cartridge that sounds quite good on this cartridge, however the cantilever is lighter than the carbon, it has to track at 2 grams.
Back in the 90's I bought a Sony turntable and really liked it. I have a bunch of good turntables, like 'The AR Turntable' and a monster Braun PS 500, and a few others, but the Sony, fitted with an Ortofon OM10 (I think that was it, maybe the 5?) was the only TT I've ever owned that on the soundtrack to 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' in the Klingon Battle the music took on a 3D experience (in stereo) where sound efex bounced back and forth above my head.

I don’t know if you may have reviewed the Sony SSCS 5 speakers but I would be interested on a review of them or at least your opinion. I know judging speakers is subjective. I picked up a pair 3 years ago for a little over $100, and I’ve enjoyed them ever since.
This is by far the best record player if you are new to vinyl records, I can't recommend the Rega, these are extremely sensitive for vibration and resonance, clearly over hyped brand. I recommend three accessories for the Sony, and they are 1. Pro-Ject record mat Cork & rubber it 3 mm thick. 2. Pro-Ject Damp-it, vibration damper. 3. Record clamp, not a record weight it will be way too heavy for this recordplayer.
9:00 - my first guess, too, was that the cutout was there for a strobe or speed sensor. Then I did some RTFM (literally) and it says that the USB port is there for firmware updates. But so far there are no updates on Sony's site (at least in my country).
Seems to be a decent alternative to the usual Audio Technica LP60 series, especially if you have other Sony components and want to keep everything matching. Seems to sound pretty good and I will admit that I kinda like how it looks compared to the LP60 series. Anyway, I am guessing that "hidden" USB port may be a service port or for firmware upgrades. The fact that it has BT out as well as USB digitization/ripping means there is programming logic involved and possible that could be upgraded, such as adding new BT codecs or finding bugs/stability issues.
You know how you said the button on the back is for standby not off, should I be unplugging my record player when it's not in use cause I've been leaving it on standby 🥴 ?
The AT-LP70X is better across the board, looks/sound/versatility....I see no point in this one. The fact that you can change out the stylus to 6 different varieties to completely change the sound signature without needing to change out the entire cartridge is amazing. You shouldn't close the cover when playing back so it's not important that the start/stop buttons are under the lid and having no dust nailing them over time will make a difference IMHO. Finally, the power cord is not attached and thus replaceable, always a good thing for longevity's sake. I love my AT-LP70XBT to pieces, it's all I need for my huge LP collection.
I'm not a fan of turntables that don't have basic adjustments for the tonearm. I have a Rega P1 that I bought recently that I think I'm going to sell because of that. While you can adjust the counterweight you'll have to use a scale to set it accurately if you buy a different cartridge. The antiskate is preset to the cartridge it ships with, which makes upgrading the cheap cartridge it comes with requiring modifying the arm. (I want to upgrade to the Audio-Technica AT-VM95EN). I'm not found of the fixed headshell but my 'AR The Turntable' with a Linn arm is the same, a real bear to change. Especially when you're in your 70s and hands aren't as steady as they once were.
Do internal phono stage of integrated amps need running in? Assuming a 10 year old Marantz amp that has not had its phono stage used for yonks is suddenly being used to just get started into the vinyl hobby.
Given that they are essentially the same price, would you give the nod to the new LP-70XBT after reviewing both? Looking for a table to complement my vintage Technics SL1600MKII for another room where I will need BT functionality.
Dang! I loved the original title, *sony*. The numbers show it. Stats tell me this video got you 2.7X the average views within 24 hours. Considering your LP70X review has been your other biggest outlier in the past half-year, I think it was a happy mistake. 8:41 I wonder if that micro-USB port is for Sony diagnostics to plug into, more than likely to test the Bluetooth system. The Technics SL-1200MK7 has a small port (I don't remember what kind) that Panasonic techs can connect to but likely to test the drive system and controls.
Okay realize that I'm old school okay. That being said, it seems to me that all of these record players or shall we call them turntables because that's what they are. Basically have the same thing inside audio Technica cartridge which is back in the day. The cartridge made the record player. So it's just a matter of whose brand name you want to support whether it be Sony whether it be crosley whether it be audio Technica whoever they're all basically the same units now the novelty unit. A preamp and a receiver are the same thing "more or less" if you have a preamp you don't need a receiver. If you have a receiver you have a preamp. All receivers are preamps but not all preamps are receivers. A receiver generally also comes with radio (like the stereo AM/FM radio). Sometimes it's hard to find a really good quality preamp, and so a good quality receiver guarantees you have a quality Preamp. Sony has a very popular receiver you could try: Sony STRDH190 2-ch Home Stereo Receiver with Phono Inputs & Bluetooth Black A lot of times when there is a built in preamp you can just turn that off and bring in your own preamp or receiver because a lot of people feel their sound quality is better with an external preamp or receiver and they want more of a component system (where every part is separate and nothing is built into anything else. When one component is built into something else, it generally is lower quality. Like this is why you want separate speakers and not a record player with built in speakers. So in a component system like this what you want are 3 parts: Speakers, turntable, and a preamp OR receiver. Hope this helps!
