Please be kind. I was seriously not going to publish this. Despite what I may look like, I was complete jelly inside. This was perhaps one of the worst panic/anxiety attacks I've had in years. I still feel it today, but we're down from an 11 to maybe a 4. We're taking a day off to rejuvenate and tomorrow the sghow will go on. Thanks for coming along on this journey ... even if some days are better than others.
It’s appreciated to have your honesty, no judgement here we all go through our own battles not all of us share it you were strong enough to share it with us. Thank you.
Self care is number 1. You do you. No judgement, only good vibes. GBS is no joke. If symptoms persist go to the “Central Salud” and see a MD for eval. Buen Camino 🥾😘
Rick, thanks for posting. I suffered with Guillain Barre Syndrome way back in 1979 at age 22. I think that i did well after it due to my age. In September 2022 i walked Sarria to Santiago and felt very moved by the experience. By posting this i hope you have helped yourself but more so the people who will see this and realuse that difficulties of all kinds can be overcome. Wishing you well. David
I’m glad you made it through that day. I’m hoping a Doc will prescribe what you need. Keep a water bottle in your hand when you are walking. Lastly I know you don’t believe, but I am praying for you my friend.
Thanks for having the courage to share your experience - no need to delete - we all are tested in various ways on the Camino. Draw strength from the community around you and know that we are thinking of you and wish you a speedy recovery. As others have said, Spain has excellent healthcare.
Hello Rick, I am Lise, we met at Casa Alternative, I am the French woman sitting next to you at dinner. I would suggest you ask the hospitalero how it works in Spain to go to a doctor, he or she will help you make an appointment for sure. I hope you can renew your prescription. ❤❤❤
Hi Rick! I just subscribed to your channel because of your transparency in this video. Thank you for showing the ups and downs of traveling and hiking. I don’t even hike but your videos are fun and informative! Hope you’re feeling better!
Seconded on transparency. A hundred-mile hike is something I would never consider. One functional lung, shot hips, bad 'clutch' knee. So... I watch because of your chatting. . An aside: If I was to think about your trip, I would look into renting a couple mules. . I can ride mules for three days, be ready to go again after lunch. (I can ride a horse for three hours, be crippled for three days.)
Nice to have found your channel. Have you ever looked into grounding? Sending positivity vibes in your direction. Thanks for sharing. That takes courage. 😊
Please go and get a script from a Spanish doc. I really feel for you. My dear friend who I will be walking the Camino with this autumn has just been diagnosed with breast cancer and we're praying all the timings work out and she can still make it.
Just came to say that I hope you feel better soon and thank you for posting. I was debating whether or not to take all of my meds on the Camino or not. This was a reminder that I am NOT a super hero and I will take all of my meds along with programming Spains “911” into my phone! Buen Camino!
Thank you for sharing your health issues. Its brave and could support other people with health conditions. Well done doing the walk. Personal I have a mental health problem and hearing your story gives me some comport.
You got this!!! Finished my Camino on May 24th. Just a thought, if you have anxiety ditch the booze. It makes it worse. My personal experience! And drink your water with electrolytes!! I loved your honesty. We all need a little help along “the way”. One foot in front of the other!!!
Please keep your head up sir. I enjoy your honesty. Many of us with disabilities have more challenges completing the Camino. I have neuropathy (in feet, hands, and head) and arthritis. My wife has arthritis and Grave’s disease. We have both done the French route twice and I just did the Portuguese route this April. You can do it!
Great job Rick in assessing and coming to your own conclusions. Thank you for sharing your feelings and fears... beats all the fluff and posturing too many people do on the internet. You know your body, mind and spirit better than anyone. As a health care professional, I can concur with you how dehydration can wreak havoc on all your body's systems, especially musculoskeletal. You know what to do. Ultreia and suseia. Buen camino.
Really like the honesty and videos. We start next month from Lisbon. Quick question, are you in the Camino now and editing on the way, are you done and editing or have you hired an editor? Thank you and keep up the great work!
guess that spiritual walk invites us all in a different way to let go off fear and have faith,... no need to delete, we all share the same thing, as much as we all walld different paths, what all holds us back is fear,...
Copper. Cheap, OTC supplement. Ended 4 solid weeks of 24/7 excruciating total body pain. Took a few days to kick in. Months later another bout with the exact same excruciating pain. The pain and anxiety was so blinding that it took me 2 weeks to remember how I got through it the last time. Copper. Duh. Felt stupid for forgetting this. Took some and pain gone, almost overnight. May not work for you but worth the try. There’s a reason why copper is used to conduct electricity. Our personalities are different but we think alike. We both want to understand systems and how they work. You’re mostly there, information wise, regarding the wiring of your bus. Nervous system is very similar. Ponder upon the basic principles. It’s worth losing sleep over. You’ve got the basic wiring, the insulated covering, the actual energy going through it (coming from another source) and you’ve got the connections between intervals or changes of direction, etc. Any type of disturbance in any single part and “the 12 volt stuff starts flickering”…drives you crazy but the system still runs and you adapt, and adapt, until you can’t move. Anxiety is usually the first flicker and it is a double edged sword because it is a symptom of, and not the cause of, a different distress…be it physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, environmental…but it is by itself so dammed distressing that it exponentially feeds upon itself, further depleting precious electrical energy, rather than allowing you to focus on the miraculous system that is trying to both get your attention and self correct. If you can relearn to respect and actually appreciate the first flicker of anxiety…learn to listen to it rather than suppress it…this one thing can change your Path in a better direction. I’ve also learned that fatigue is the flip side of the anxiety coin. Living in a desert, it was a game changer when I read that fatigue is a first symptom of dehydration. Who knew? I didn’t. But drinking wine or beer, or Gatorade…honestly no judgment, but do so in the appropriate inner and outer environment because they can cause, but certainly will worsen, dehydration. We all need a certain minimum of pure water and minerals and electrolytes for our system, electrical NERVOUS system, to conduct electricity and operate. Major principle. Think about it. Side note, especially if your main source of water is reverse osmosis or distilled water, if you buy bottled water, get and rotate among different sources of natural spring or mineral waters. They each have their good and bad minerals and by alternating them you automatically maintain a better balance. Another major principle. There’s more…there’s always more…but I am hoping that this much is enough to make a simple but blessed calibration to what sounds like an amazing life.
Thanks! And tell James and Helen hello if you ever run into them. Two of the nicest people I've met. Well, Helen at least. LOL! (Sorry James, you know I love you!). @bythecurb
Take a moment and go see a local doctor and get a prescription. I've heard pilgrims have had great success with Spanish doctors and hospitals. Quick and easy, in and out. I just watched a video of a pilgrim who walked far off the trail in a forest to use the bathroom and then twisted and broke his ankle trying to get back. I assume he had purchased a local Sim Card for his phone because he was able to call the Spanish version of 911 for ambulance. I knew of another pilgrim who always carries a GPS-equipped Zoleo Satellite Communicator and Distress Beacon. They are only $150 on Amazon plus a monthly subscription. Seems like a good thing to have when you're far away from anything including a cellular signal. Hang in there. Drink your fluids often. Buen Camino.
Spain has amazing public healthcare, actually. Don't wait too long, just hit a clinic if you need to. They got you, I promise. Also, it will NOT bancrupt you, even without appropriate insurance.
Thanks for the brutal honesty. Take care of yourself. The Spanish health care system is great. Find a Centro de Salud and they will get that rx done for you. Buen camino.

No need to delete video. You are inspirational. Keep going! Best wishes. You are only being tested, no biggie. You can do it.

Buspar plus alcohol can cause impaired muscle control as does electrolytes imbalance. Just a thought. Hope you’re feeling better 🤞😘
Thank you so much for sharing this!
Edit: also you reminded me to ask my Dr for a refill of my Buspar!

'I quit my meds.'
This sounds as though your determination to be a hiker -- staying with your chums -- is over-riding your rational self-care.
