- In this flower photography tutorial, we are photographing the ever-popular Dandelion. These are prolific flowers as we enter the summer months, and great to shoot in macro, especially when you add some colour!
Unlike our macro photography tutorial playlist, in this series, we are setting out to explore the photographic possibilities of different flowers and plants. We will be using different lighting methods and looking at ideas and inspiration for composition too!
In this flower photography tutorial, we are using coloured background cards and Adaptalux Studio lighting to make our dandelion photos pop. We encounter some surprise aphids and use water to add some additional interesting features to the dandelion clocks.

Another perfect video. So enjoy watching you follow the interest of the moment instead of sticking to the script. Great work man, thanks fornyhis
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Really like the pop of color behind the dandelion. Gives a very nice effect. Great tutorial!
Thanks Melissa, glad you like the effect, i was pretty pleased with the vibrant colours!
Great video and explanations, thanks Ben.
Thanks for watching Javi :)
Another crackingt video Ben. Thanks.
Thanks 🙂
Good evening Ben. I do hope that you are well and keeping safe.
Great video. Tried this at the begging of lock down. Very interesting and very fragile flower dandelions, with great results. Thank you for sharing.
It's certainly an interesting subject! Thanks for watching Joanna!
Ben your videos ate always intriguing and informational and daring not sure i would want to have those little critters around my house thanks for sharing your the best
Thanks Michael, the Aphids went back outside to fly to another plant, don't think they would make very interesting pets!
Great video, I think I want some of those gradient backgrounds now too!
They're pretty handy for adding a touch of colour!
Love your videos. Finally today after watching you guys since your kickstarter launch I placed an order. So I just need to find something to do to distract me until your able to ship. I’m like a kid in a candy store.
Taken the pungent! Don't worry, not too much longer to wait for the next batch now.
very nice!! I love dandelions. My garden is full of them. Bye from Italy!
Time for some photos of them!?
@@Adaptalux yes! I did a lot photos of them few weeks ago!
Absolutely amazing! Many thanks for sharing your extraordinary photography work. Can i have a link for lighting you using please? Flexible lighting please? Thank you

thank so lovely i like it
Got my extensive Adaptalux kit a couple of weeks ago but no backdrop gradient cards were included. Are they still available?
Hi Steve, they're going to be included in packs from now on, in place of some of the other literature. Part of an ongoing redesign of the pack experience. Drop us an email with your order details and I'll see what we can do.
I just ran inside and emptied my Adaptalux box recently received and no background cards in mine. Perhaps they could at least supply the images so we can print them off.
@@Adaptalux Message sent. Many thanks.
I just bought an Adaptalux studio kit, ordered in April 20, and didn't receive the cards. These would be great as I love shooting dandelions!
Hi Annie, they are brand new, going into kits from now on.
Hi Ben, great video. I’ve tried this subject over summer, they are so fragile (and messy) but lots of interesting details. I spayed with tonic water and lit with UV ... results varied. Also off topic when I was shooting garden flowers under UV long exposure, I also found they housed tiny creatures so most photos had little bug streaks !
Andrea (Australia)😁
I did think about trying it with some tonic water and UV, did you post the results anywhere? I'd love to see how you got on!
I just order my adaptalax cant wait to play with it
Working hard to get it to you soon Cheryl!
@@Adaptalux thank you
I did not get any gradient cards in my studio. Can I still get them?
Hey Mike, the cards are new, they're going to be included in packs from now on. Drop us an email with your order details and I'll see what we can do.
@@Adaptalux OK will do. Thanks
Would be great to know your settings also very informative and we'll presented in a good speed thank you
Hi Kay, the shots with the illuminated background were at f8 1/4000 and ISO500 The shots using the background cards were at f18 1/60 and ISO500.
Just ordere my starter kit. Very excited 😆 cheers Claudia
I push a cocktail stick up the hollow stem of the dandelions to give extra support
Great idea Chris, I'll definitely try that in the future!
Hi I’m wondering if you ship to Switzerland? And what do you prefer for beginners? A million thanks in advance br Claudia
Hi Claudia, We do ship to Switzerland. For beginners, i'd probably recommend a starter pack which comes with 2 arms of your choice, so you can have white and colours if you wish. It depends a lot on your personal preference and the subjects you would like to shoot. Check out some of our other videos, there's lots of inspiration on which arm combinations might suit your style!
Adaptalux thanks a lot 👍🏼
Great video as usual , I didnt get any gradient cards with my kit :(
Hey Rob, drop us an email, they're brand new, going out in all new kits.
To better protect delicate flower stems I hold the tubing with the aligator clips then insert the stem into the free end of the tube. The benifit is absolutely no damage to the stem, the downside is a little less controll over the position of the bloom.
That's a good way of doing it! I think the straw I had a was a little too narrow to hold a stem but it's a good idea for next time, thanks!
The whole is the clock. What you are pulling out are the seeds!
They are called dandelion seeds not clocks, the main thing is but the small ones are seeds :-). I have one on order and roll on next week when it comes. Can’t thank Ben enough for his advice and help choosing it, the UV light will be my big challenge I think
You're right, I don't have a green thumb so may of my plant terms are plucked off the top of my head... I was close!
@@Adaptalux You are not wrong, they are also called 'clocks'.
Pradipta Datta the actual head is known as a head or clock, the individual sections are called dandelion seeds. Called a clock as people used to blow them and think they would tell the time ! I was born and brought up in the countryside so I’m used to the old tales and blown a few trying to tell the time 🤦♀️😂
Hi Ben, what a nice video about colourful Dandelion macro photography you've uploaded. I uploaded a little series about 'starting with macro photography on a budget'. Thank you sharing this very nice footage.
