She had such a powerful figure on the ice. They did not like her because of that alone. She would have gotten the recognition she deserved a long time ago, like Scott Hamilton who was also a show stopper. But she's had an amazingly lengthy career.
It's also amazing from a technical standpoint - she was skating on one foot and doing alternating compulsory figure loops, which were one of the harder patterns to do when compulsory figures were still part of competition (until 1990)
This is my favorite performance from Surya Bonaly. This is truly beautiful skating --beautiful artistry--regardless of the fall. This is how she should have skated at worlds and Olympics. This is the work of a champion. Note the lusty applause. She conquered the audience.
I think that this performance was a slap in the face of the jury, and also a statement, she basically was saying "You think I'm a jumper, with a correct Technique but a huge lack of artistic skills, okay" this performance was amazing because here she was playing by the rules except at the very end, when she did her fipback, and that was the statement: I am who I am, and I'm an artist, I will fight for my vision and conception of my art, you can't deny my work or my talent. She was graceful. with that she could have win gold at olympics but no, she wanted to be who she was while competiting. A true rebel. A proud outsider. A real winner.
I think he/she is referring to the full 4 minute Olympic Gala skate that can be viewed here - th-cam.com/video/e-SBRpxe9Yc/w-d-xo.html - regardless I much prefer this shortened HD edit that displays Surya in all her beautiful glory :)
I preferred this to her competition program! Very beautiful & I think it suited her more. Lol though I'm jealous of how she looks in that catsuit, I wish I could look even half that good!
@@carlajonas4508 I always thought her skating was crude and sloppy. Her choreography almost non -existant empty skating between jumps. I wish she had better coaches to refine her performances. She was more akin to a gymnast than a figure skater.
Goodness, the POWER, BALANCE, BEAUTY, EDGES, FLEXIBILITY, CREATIVITY ie, perfection. She was not given the marks she rightfully deserved. She will forever be remembered, as she was OUTSTANDING!
Hands down to Oksana Baiul, but sometimes I feel like Figure Skating geniuses never received the acclamation they deserve. I'm talking about Surya and Tonya. When will figure skating be objective enough for unconventionally strong women?
E - It's clear that we both see the Tonya Harding issue very differently; and, since we're both at the extremes, I don't see no point in making substantiated arguements for they will only start a tread just few people would care about....so...bye!
I loved and cherished both Surya and Tonya, but I don't really think, now, they were underscored: let's not forget that they won a lot, after all, a great bunch of silver medals and a few golden too. They didn't win more because they faced somebody who actually slightly outclassed them, for different reasons: Yamaguchi was much more stylish and refined than both, for one, as was Bajul later. Surya' edges were often flat and Tonya used to be a bit stiff. Let's not forget that Debi Thomas and Midori Ito both won worlds and Olympic silver medals.
In figure skating they also judge the kostumes, the body shape, the music and your "social life". Sadly the talent is not the only thing that matters. (I am a gymnast and dancer and there the judging is the same...)
A true artist gives love through her talent to the audience, that's exactly what's she is a brilliant one at that...she gave that last back flip to them💕
She had artistry, but they were so used to judging how the white girls did it they didn't understand her. "How dare this gymnast try to call herself a figure skater". But at the end of the day she was a 3x World Silver Medalist, 9x French, 5x European, and 1991 World Junior Champion. That ain't nothing to sneeze at.
Used to judging white girls? Who the heck was saying she wasn't great? You just listed her accolades which is not small feat, so I'd say she was very accomplished no matter what skin color she was. But the other commentor is right. Her mother was very invasive with training and sometimes was her only coach despite not having any figure skating bg herself and Surya's artistic merit suffered. But the two backflips just for grins? No one can dispute she was BA.
Yeah she never won gold but what she did do which is better than gold she made history. To this day nobody even men have not done her one legged backflip. She definitely left her mark on the sport and the minds and hearts of people like myself that never forgot her.👑
@@Kaboomboo A lotta folks in these comments said she wasn't great, and that "she coulda done better if her technique was better". Most of those women didn't come close to her success with their "better technique". And she only did ONE backflip in amateur competition, the rest were done in exhibitions/ice shows/and practice. Get it right.
Incroyable talent ! Et contrairement au côté diva qu'on lui colle à cause de sa médaille d'argent, je la trouve humble et tres sympa comme femme. Mais sa carrière méritait un meilleur palmarès ! C'est unique ce qu'elle fait !
Honestly, I have never seen any move so effortlessly and transition so smoothly between moves. I'm in awww :) She makes me wanna try to at least break properly next winter at Bryant Park lol
Well - Surya deserved Gold for at least one time instead of silver. I love watching her ice skating - elegant, powerful, no postion , no second is boring from the beginning til the end
And the second flip as she leaves the ice just cause she knows everyone loves it! She is a powerhouse and so talented.
Wow💥💥💥
Truly the most impressive move I’ve seen
Woah!
I’m gonna be honest. People hold women like Nancy or tonya at a high praise. But, Surya is a goddes periodt.
She was a standout from the jump, and she was proud of her "blackness".
J Gang Nancy who? 🧐 😂

She was one of the VERY few skaters that mastered the ability to skate powerfully and equally graceful. She’s the definition of an athlete.
She was so underrated! I wish they created a category of "Powerskating" for skaters like her 😀

She's an ice Queen that's why

Surja makes figure skating appears effortless, her performance is breathless. "A GREAT"
