I wrote a letter to Nancy Kerrigan when I was probably 7 years old telling her how much I looked up to her, and included my school picture. She quickly responded with a hand-written greeting card and included a bookmark. She said how much she appreciated my letter and that she kept my picture on her vanity mirror. I still have the card and bookmark and always think about her kindness when I see her. It still means so much to me!
Good to hear a nice story about Kerrigan for once. I keep hearing stories about how she was such a b----h off the rink, especially after her obvious disappointment at not getting the gold during the medals ceremony.
I do the same. Sia and snow tha product. I made them homemade bracelets. Like thank you. Sia I learned your song on piano. Who needs a phone when you got cups on and string ....
I like the contrast between Nancy who was more about being light and soft and Tonya who was more about being athletic and strong. I think skating shouldn't be about trying to fit women into a feminine delicate mold but about appreciating the diversity of the athletes' qualities and trying to cultivate them as individual otherwise it becomes boring and you just end up wasting people's potential.

The way people react to Nancy versus the way they reacted to Tonya is stunning. Tonya barely got any applause through her whole routine while if Nancy so much as turns slightly people start screaming.
I will tell you why by my owen experience.... people are fucking racist and i dont say because nationally as they both from same place but people judging by the way you look ... lets say i do something that deserves 10 point and you do and also deserve 10 point... but imagine that god blessed me with better ( more likable for general population) face and you have different... than because of that judge's will start watching me with excitement and you just with cold heart.... so after, in they minds i will score extra 2 points more than you and that regardless if we both deserve same 10 points... ( i lost many competitions because i wasnt in country where i born and because i didnt know judge's -never talked to them-) after 2 years like that and intensive trying , I came to point that my victory could be rejected as it was to much above all ... that how i got many nationals and qualified for Olympics - even though i didnt go because personal metters ) and i can say for sure .. there are many like me.

It was all terribly unfair. That’s the reason Tonya’s friends decided to take matters into their own hands and kneecap Nancy. Totally the wrong thing to do, but the reasoning behind it wasn’t. Nancy was given such an unfair advantage based on how she looked, not how she skated.
Nancy looked & skated near her best. She was acting so entitled to the gold but Oksana won this fair. She could have even not medaled had she not been overscored, or Tonya or Surya had a good skate that day! But yeah, that dress was really gorgeous...
I loved Oksana’s program. Everything about it was great. Her bright pink dress only furthering the music and her child like giddy of a skating style (which is good if anything especially for someone as young as 16)
Honestly I think this is a pretty good performance but I can't bring myself to fully appreciate it because I keep thinking about her talking shit about Oksana for crying..
I feel like people make way too much of that. Why is Kerrigan's frustration (and let's keep in mind the insane mental stress she was probably under-can you imagine training for the Olympics, already challenging, and then being physically attacked?) so maddening to people, whereas McKayla Maroney's "not impressed" face was a fun viral moment.
@@DanielFolsom Right? She was told that the medal ceremony was delayed because she was getting her make up touched up, and she said "oh she'll just cry again." She wasn't making fun of her. Oksana was already seen crying her eyes out before she even stepped off the ice, it's not that big of a leap to feel frustrated that the ceremony was delayed because of that. If she had been told that it was because they couldn't find her national anthem music, she probably would've been different. If people want to hate on her for something, how about her behavior after the Olympics. Like showing up late for interviews, or dissing Disney during the parade?
She was only replying to what she had been told. Nancy had not been told that the delay was caused by the officials not being able to find the national anthem for Oksana's country. Chen Lu was also not happy with the delay. Put yourself in their place - legs painfilly cramping because they still have their skates on, but are not skating, and they are told that the delay - which is resulting in their pain - is due to Oksana reapplying her makeup. What's horrible about saying, in effect; her make-up is going to get messed up again, because she will cry again at the presentation of the medals. Why bother to reapply the make-up? There was nothing evil about what she said. If anything, both she and Chen were simply a little impatient with having to wait so long when their legs were cramping - and to the best of their knowledge, for no good reason.
VERY! As was her SNL hosting episode! What were they thinking?! Vanna White has more personality and she's about a -99 on the quick witted personality scale! Sorry!
Abe Paul judges like fast skating that’s why Kwan lost the Gold to Lipinski (not just because Tara did a triple triple)- Michelle was nervous and skated tight which is a shame because she is an all time great ❤️
She is so graceful! Nancy skates beautifully don’t get me wrong, but Tonya’s skating is exciting and keeps you on edge. I personally think Tonya’s athleticism and build would have made her a great gymnast.
Tonya threw those tricks so hard because she was such a powerful skater and I think the reason why people liked Nancy was because she made it look efforrtless
How is it that she gets any points at all for her 'artistic' presentation?! She raises her arms, that's basically it, needs endless time to prepare before she jumps - how is that equal to Oksana's performance where you can see that ballet and figure skating fit together perfectly!
That is a figment of your imagination. Learn how to ice skate before you judge. It was 5-4 Communist judging. The Western judges had Nancy winning the gold running away. Two of them had Liu Chen with the silver and Oksana with the bronze. The other two Western judges were almost there. You would never dare ask those four judges why they judged it that way because you would look so stupid. The five Commie judges don't look stupid, just crooked as hell. THEY DO AND DID CHEAT!!! You and your kind of Nancy haters make me sick, all of you.
wupperelfe Oskana’s was definitely more artistic. There’s just something special that you feel when watching her skate. She uses her face a lot as well.
Where were Oksana's combination jumps ? they were not there, except a weak double double at the end. Her triple jump she did at the end didn't land right either as her left skate scraped the ice. What does raising her arms have to do with anything ? She was as graceful as a swan. Nancy was just as artistic as Oksana. They both had six 5.9s and three 5.8s.
Well that is how Michelle Kwan won all her gold medals, she skated a boring , careful programs. She had such long setup for jumps and rarely did a triple triple combo.. Others skated their hearts out and went for it skating a more complicated , hard program with triple combinations and would stumble or fall and Michelle would win. Olympics Michelle couldn't win that way because unlike all the other grand prix events ALL ELITE skaters worldwide are competing for Olympic gold.
@@rolandgreen7484 Exactly, but don't forget her elegant artistic choreography. Lol. She is so unrefined it's laughable. She has bombed just about every single competition I ever watched her skate in.
@@aspenrobinson8797 - Always nice to see some understands! YES!!! Michelle's mere "consistency" could never garner us an Olympic Champion. It was never to happen.
@@mtha7796 Sorry, I thought you were referring to Nancy Kerrigan as the drama queen. Her fans say that about Nancy when she was attacked. They make fun of her and worse. Tonya has the meanest and most cruel fans. They sicken me .
She was really great here. You may say it was boring, without high jumps, but for me this was elegant, light like ballerina dance. Her movement, jumps and spins seem effortles and it prooves how talented and experienced skater she was then. Still smile on her face, no nerves, no anxiety, like it was with Oksana. Nancy's jumps look as they were effortles, easy. You dont see any effort in it, and that is real art. A perfect show.
Nancy did two triple jump combinations, a Triple-triple toe loop combo and a triple salchow-double toe. Even in 94, this was rare. Oksana had no jump combinations in her free skate, she even two-footed one of her triple jumps. Technically, Nancy had Oksana beat, but Oksana beat Nancy in the artistic impression marks, which at that time was the tiebreaker in figure skating.
The problem here was Nancy did a safe program while Oksana did a risky program and nailed it. I mentioned this in a previous comment but it was similar to Brian Orser vs Brian Boitano in 1988 where Orser had a flawless but safe program in the free skate while Boitano pulled all the stops and of course that death drop that was the difference.
@@cancerchristine929 please remember the beautiful Olympic gold medalist, Peggy Fleming, wore a very simple green skating costume homemade by her mother! Peggy won in 1968 at Grenoble. Look up the story why her mother chose that particular color, chartreuse, it is so sweet and her daughter had a costume sewn with love, that beats a designer outfit anyday.
The sad thing was Nancy actually thought she had one the gold, but with Oksana's program with her throwing in the triple jump at the end of her program that took guts. Even though Oksana did not win on " technical merit" with the artistic score breaking the tie, I always believe in seeing an athlete take risks and having guts is what really makes them a winner!
Nancy definitely did gold here, but they just had to take her out of the spotlight because of the insane media frenzy around them. They had lost all control of the thousands and thousands of reporters and cameras flooding every corner and making the whole sport about the attack story. It was getting more and more dangerous, and surreal. I think it was a necessary step to break the cycle, and Nancy went on to have a fabulous career making millions non the less.
@Novak D you mean 94? I think it was just the beginning of the storytelling on ice concept. The same year Katharina Witt did amazing storytelling in her free program. Very moving and special.
@@christinamasberg Yeah, but Katarina was reduced to only doing triple toe loop jumps by 94. Her arsenal of triple jumps and her ability to perform them had reduced to only the triple toe by 94. On occasion she could still do the triple Loop. Technically, Katarina was never as strong as Debi Thomas or any of the top female skaters in Lillehammer.
It's amazing reading these ugly comments about how bad Nancy is & what a diva blah blah blah & the Tonya lovers downplaying Tonya choosing to have Nancy attacked(even mentioned murdering her in their meetings). Then it's poor Tonya with the bad upbringing. Tonya dragged Nancy into her bs. Nancy was attacked because she didn't fall on her ass all the time like Tonya.
@@emmabauer1906 It was proved that Tonya didn't know her abusive husband was gonna attack her. So shut your mouth and get back to doing your math homework.
@@sugarfree6959 It was PROVEN(not proved, you idiot!)that Tonya was in on it & they found her writing on that envelope. She made a plea deal because she was in on it. She is the one who was able to find out Nancy's schedule. You are just as sick in the head as your idol. GTFOH.
I know right. I just can't with these kids probably sitting there eating doritos, probably unable to run around the block without getting out of breath, being like "oh yeah this is shit" because lo and behold, they watched I, Tonya 😱😱😱 So they are now not only Olympian figure-skating experts, but they also know every little detail about what happened between the two, in spite of not even being alive at the time and never having heard of either of them before the film 🤪🤪🤪🤪
It is creepy that everyone is bashing her now. She was a hero for making it to the Olympics in the way she did. Everyone loved her and no one called her boring. Oksana just wowed everyone. They all went on tour after the Olympics (not Tonya) and everyone was glad to see all of them. People are so mean today. If you don’t fit everyone’s idea of perfect and come up with a program 30 years ago that beats today’s skaters, people tear you apart with scorn and disdain. People who call it “novice level” don’t know how hard it is to pull this off at the Olympics. Today’s novices, that you think are so superior to Nancy Kerrigan, will not get to an Olympics, except for one or two. They have a long way to go and a lot can happen. Like an injury from valuing far too many extreme jumps.
The admiration towards her soured after all this because she had a nasty attitude. She was making fun of Oksana for crying too much, she talked about the Disneyland parade being corny, and she was showing up late to interviews on the news after the games. She's a salty diva. Not to take away from her ability, she was a good skater, but an ice princess has a cold heart it seems.
@@Kaboomboo That is not fair Nancy never made fun of Oksana. She was angry because she thought she had won the gold, but she lost. Yes she could have been a better sport about losing, but I don't blame her for being angry. The judges from the eastern bloc nations were known for cheating and favoring athletes from other communist nations, and back then the American athletes would have been well aware of this. Nancy was clearly by far the better skater that night. I believe as do many others that it was politics that cost her the gold medal.
What a snarky comment. Do you know the circumstances of their relationship or their personal life. I doubt it! People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Ok, Nancy was mean to poor little Oksana but they thought the award ceremony was delayed for 30 mins for her to put her makeup back on. I did not like Oksana’s “sexy” hip twist dance and tacky pink feather dress.
This routine was seriously good! Her execution was nearly flawless, and the music was a good pick to keep the crowd interested. I'm kind of obsessed with this routine, like wow.
She was a good skater, a very good skater, but her and Kristi are so overrated. Tonya Harding was flawed, but still an all around more exciting skater and performer, She had jumps and spins, but it was all more passionate looking, she had the athletic ability, and also the artistic ability. I guess if your going by the typical figure skater style, than Nancy was the ideal, but whats interesting about 'typical' anyway..
+955pokerface It didn't help that the U.S. Figure Skating Association (Tonya's own federation) outright held Tonya back and discriminated against her because she was white (anglo) and poor. They did this very early on in the '80s when Tonya was starting to make her move in skating. Tonya clearly stood out from the rest of American girls with her advanced technical ability back in the '80s, combined with her natural artistry, but they simply kept her down. Meanwhile, Midori Ito was doing the same thing at the same time in Japan, but her skating federation actually saw how groundbreaking she was and helped her move ahead.
+chocolatesupport Yeah if Tonya lived in a really nice big house, with a better family life, and acted the same way, and liked fixing cars etc. they would have treated her differently, treated her better. If only she just sought out some stability, earlier, and attempted to be more feminine, even more than her attempt in '92 after the Worlds in '91, when she switched coaches and did the whole 'Moon River' thing. She should have ditched the reliance on jumps and did a classical program like Kristi's style, they wouldn't have been able to deny her..if only lol
What a crock of shit. Nancy's family wasn't rich, in fact her Dad worked 3 jobs to get her skates, ice time, coaching, etc. Tonya had some good technical ability but she wasn't consistent, just like Ito who flew over the boards at one point. It's about all around strong skating and artistry, not crappy presentation.
Nancy can thank Oksana for the fact that anyone still watches this performance. Really, for the passion and the choice of music, Nancy just dialled it in, which comes from thinking that it’s all yours from the start. Good lesson to anyone whose ego has them thinking that they can’t be beat.
She didn’t think it was hers. She had the skate of her life, and deserved to win. Nancy’s coach also saw the errors and two footed jumps in Oksana program, and said he was flabbergasted she won. She was cheated out of the Gold, and was angry about it. And it while it was unfortunate it was understandable and especially after she had been through.
I see how everyone is bashing her now. She was an amazing skater as was Tonya. I get Tonyas story has people see a different side but Nancy was a great figure skater.
No one should be bashing her. Notice how Tonya is still using that incident, doing commercials movies just to stay relevant? Where as Nancy stays out of it all? That already tells you who the issue was and still is, Tonya.
I must say I started watching Nancy's and Tonya's skating after the movie "I, Tonya". Just out of curiosity, simply to see what these skaters looked like on the ice. I'm not from America and a bit too young to remember them competing. However, after watching quite a few videos my impression is that Tonya (and some other skaters too) had much more artistry and she really felt the music she would skate to. You can tell she was enjoying it. Watching Nancy I've got a feeling she's forcing herself to do all those moves with her arms. She seems to be stiff. It doesn't seem natural and probably that's why there is not much pleasure in watching it. And there is also one more thing I've noticed. Even though Tonya had no education (I'm not sure how educated Nancy was) in my opinion Tonya's way of speaking (during interviews) was better than Nancy's...
its such an interesting story because Nancy was Americas princess and even people look back on those two and Tonya is still more fun to watch than nancy. I guess money cant buy what Tonya had, the performers gift. but money could buy better coaching, better outfits, stable housing. all things Nancy had.
I'd have still given her the gold three decades later. Technically, she had the cleaner and more difficult program with a 3/3 and triple lutz late in the program. She didn't miss or 2foot any landings. Artistically, she skated with style and posture, never hitting an unpleasing position. People hate on her like she was a spoiled ice princess. She was actually a shy introvert who struggled with nerves her whole career. Her family was a hard-working blue-collar family, her mom legally blind. This was a great triumph for her and her country. Amazing.
... and Oksana's was the same long program she did the previous year at the World Championships. I think a new long program shows Nancy had the artistic growth.
I completely agree. I think that was also a reason the judges gave Oksana the gold instead of Nancy. Oksana’s smile came naturally, she was so happy to be on the ice and it showed, especially with that beautiful big smile towards the ending. Nancy didn’t look confident enough.
@@soomi. ya and thank goodness they gave it to Oksana. Nancy was so mean! She said oh is Oksana gonna cry again? Like who says that. The girl was 15 and wasn’t rich like you l, and she won fair and square. Nancy was a sore loser.
Nancy Kerrigan was one of the best. When she was on the ice the feeling of the music and routine just flowed right through you. She was wonderful with her routine to the music and just stretching out every move.
Many comments here are not positive. I feel the opposite...I think this was one of the most inspirational skating performances of ALL times. It speaks to my soul!
Just imagine the incredible strength and courage it took for her to come back after that horrific attack. Her technique is flawless and her artistry is beautiful.
Graceful, strong but delicate performance. She did well what she does best. Considering what she had gone through the last months, you can't ask for a better performance.
I always thought she had a valid point, when she asked after the competition why people couldn't have been just happy to see her put together two great programs when it counted most.
Given the injury that was inflicted on her just 6 weeks earlier, she did amazingly well. She was a graceful and accomplished skater, and much more steely and determined than people give her credit for.
Regardless of the debate of whether she should have won gold or not, this was by far the best performance in her entire career. Quite a Triumph when you consider that a year previous at the world championships she was so overcome by nerves and pressure that she could barely land a jump in the long program.
Exactly I always thought Nancy was a beautiful skater, but for some reason her nerves always seemed to get the best of her. She skated better here than she ever did. Unfortunate for her, politics and sympathy for Oksana cost her the Gold medal🐾
She usually cracked under pressure, but here she was a totally different skater. Considering the struggles she had the year before, this was a stellar performance, more mature than Baiul’s that night. Technically she was on too. I would’ve awarded her the gold.
Lotsa folks criticizing her program looks boring here. But this is the best she's ever skated at a large int‘l competition. In other performances she either fell or chickened out of triple jumps and sometimes did BOTH. We'll never know had she not doubled out of that first triple jump if she would've won the Gold.
My God. Give this poor woman a break! She spent years working towards the Olympics and then gets pulled into a scandal she had nothing to do with. Then the media storm kept the intensity boiling right up to the performances and she does a fantastic skate. What inner strength this showed. I was proud of her.
Hannah Marie Poole agreed. I feel like if Kerrigan switched places with Harding in that whole situation, everyone would be saying how great this is. But personally I find both of them boring skaters and I don’t really care about the situation.
God she's boring to watch, if she didn't have "the look" there's no way people would have been that crazy over her! I can't stop watching Oksana and Tonya though, they have real talent for the sport imo Nancy does nothing special and doesn't have that wow factor!
To me, this was the best performance Nancy did in her competitive career. After recovering from that knee injury from her attack during practice at the US Nationals, she came back and performed the skate of her life. I know that lots of people started hating the fact that, because she was caught saying that “hurtful” statement about Oksana Baul saying before the medal ceremony in the Olympics, “She’s gonna cry anyways! What’s the difference?”. She’s not jealous and mad that Oksana won the gold medal. Also Hell yeah! Contrary to popular belief, if Nancy said that statement to be petty and bitter toward Oksana, then how come they’re friends who high five each other back when they used to compete with each other professionally?
I know you feel bad for Nancy because of all the hate aimed at her. I do as well even though I did not like her sour grapes attitude about not winning the gold, I still felt bad for her, but as the saying goes haters are going to hate. I have never seen so many high and mighty, rude, nasty, and judgmental people then on these message boards.
Nancy Kerrigan I'm proud of you during this beautiful skating. You will always have a piece of my heart. We all felt bad about what Tonya did to you and her lack of empathy towards you. You were so strong and powerful. Have a wonderful life. You deserve every happiness.
Joyce Pietryga Oksana was criticized for her entertainment like performance. Nancy took the safe route, the route all the other skaters took. Oksana just executed it well.
Actually Nancy did try to dance in one of her exhibition skates. (It's on TH-cam if you want to look it up.) Note I said "try" because it was awful. Truly something I hope never to see again.
She makes it look so effortless. So much talent, beauty and poise can make people so jealous! I love how people think that if you're beautiful you have an easy life, this girl is proof that isn't true.
She did look fantastic in both programs here- her technical program dress is one of the best I've ever seen. This program really could've been even more magical had she not had those two cheesy breaks in feeling/choreography during the music changes in the middle and at the end. She always threw in awkward robotic-like arm movements and steps straight out of the Soviet ladies' programs in the mid-80's and it distracted the mood, at least for me. In the end, though, I think she definitely deserved the gold medal.
@Tony Wheeler I felt that Nancy deserved the gold medal too, because so what she did a double flip instead of a triple flip. However, her routine is more technically difficult than Oksana Baul’s routine. So what Oksana’s routine is artistically better than Nancy, but some of her jumps are sloppy. She 2-footed an extra jump that wasn’t planned. I feel better that I’m not the only one who think that Nancy should of won the gold medal. It’s Russian favoritism.
Hands down , HER best performance. Done under the greatest amount of pressure ANY skater before her or since has ever faced. ANY. And if you don't think this was better than Oksana, listen to the crowds reaction tot this and then look at Oksana's and hear the crowds polite but "is that all there is?" response. Looking back, Nancy's was a complete choreographed routine that stands the test of time. Oksana's was an Ice show routine complete with numerous moments of standing and gesturing. No comparison. None whatsoever. This was one for the ages, that looking at now 26 years later, is ever better than I remember.
I'm no fan of Nancy Kerrigan (her arrogance is incredibly off putting), but she was robbed in 1994. Oksana's program is an out and out hot mess, nowhere near the technical sharpness and you could make an argument on the artistry was lacking..Oksana was a lovely fluid dancer (better than Nancy, I'll grant her) but the choreography for her long program was all over the place. To this day, I still can't see how Oksana was the "better" skater that night- she wasn't. I sympathize with her pain, and her courage to compete despite the pain. However- she was not the best that night. But most sheep will flock wherever they are herded- to sympathize with Tonya (who clearly had part in planning the assault, no matter what she claims; the woman is a tremendous liar, no matter how wonderfully athletic she was), to hate Nancy for being too much of a princess/good girl, etc. If you watch the programs it's quite clear Nancy is the superior skater on the night of the Olympics.
Was this AFTER she had a busted knee?! I mean yeah the performance wasn’t all that but- a BUSTED KNEE?!? That makes it incredible. People love a comeback.
She was always such a graceful skater. That's why she was so popular. Everything she did was beautiful and effortless looking. That said, I personally prefer more power in the jumps and a little more attitude in a program. Nancy definitely has a big place in skating history though.
I don't understand her team's choice of music; but that triple toe-triple toe was near perfect and gorgeous. The problem is that it's not a memorable number; but if you really examine the quality of her skating and consider her combinations, her technical score deserved 5.9s.
This was a gold medal performance here by Nancy! She skated clean and elegantly. Her music was beautiful. Her program well choreographed!!! She was well prepared and recovered nicely from her attack by Tonya Hardings husband. In my eyes she's the true champion and gold medal winner!!!
Jorge L. Zavala As a former competitive figure skater, I can objectively say you are wrong about her not deserving at least silver. Whether it was boring or not can be debated. What cannot be debated is that this performance was very clean with a decent amount of technical content for the time. She landed 5 clean triples, including a triple-triple combo. Not even Oksana or Tonya landed a triple-triple combo. If you can’t see how Nancy deserved at least silver, then you’re letting personal bias get in the way.
@@evanperilstein5308 I agree. I don't find Nancy to be particularly likable but I would say her technical merit was better than Oksana. She lacked the personality and energy of Oksana though and that's why she got the silver. She was by no means a bad skater just because she's not as exciting as someone like Tonya or Surya.
@@evanperilstein5308 I'm an Ice Skater Too... Amd I compete in Other Countries....and All I could say is that Nancy is just Elegant But Not That Good as Tonya..... And Even My Opponents is Better than Nancy
Such a Stunning and graceful performance, specially when you think about her having to recover from a broken knee to get there and how close to impossible that actually is ❤ she really deserved that medal
LOVE IT SO MUCHHHH! i feel high level of elegant when i watched it, she’s just really pretty, her body is amazing, her dress is amazing too, the music so elegant and also her skilll it’s just totally connected pefectly at all!🔥🔥🔥💯😍
I love this program and Nancy's skating of it more each time I see it. Just the way Nancy strokes the ice in the beginning is so beautiful, so elegant and so STRONG!! Nancy was a very strong athlete, and to quote Dick Button when he was once describing her: "This girl can jump!" When she was on, she had - I think - the best triple lutz of the women of her era. Her other jumps were beautiful too, but her triple flip - though it was gorgeous when she hit it - was inconsistent. However, I enjoyed her double flp in this program; it was perfectly timed to the music, and was a nice set up for her triple/triple combination. This was truly a stellar program. I concentrated on observing her upper body during jumps the last time I watched this, and I was blown away by the beautiful positions of her body during rotation.
Kerrigan had a gorgeous lutz I agree but Ito and Harding were definitely by far better. I always wondered why people made an excuse for Baiul badly two footing hers but not giving Kerrigan credit for her clean double flip.
I forgot about Ito. What happened that she wasn't in the '94 Olympics? The only time I remember Nancy skating against Ito was '91 Worlds, & '92 Olympics. Nancy failed at her Lutz & her triple/triple combo in '92 long program but hit a spot on, gorgeous triple flip to open the program. But, over the years, Nancy was really consistent with her triple Lutz in the technical program (once she started using it). I know at times, Tonya's Lutz was really high. I might still give the edge to Nancy in style points, but I will admit I'm a tad bit biased when it comes to Nancy, & you just might be totally correct. 😊
Nancy gave a magnificent performance and should have won the gold medal. She was the complete package of artistry, beautiful jumps, elegant lines, and power-a true champion.
Gorgeous costume. She's out there doing stuff I could never do- it's very, very impressive. That said, this just wasn't it. I think Oksana absolutely deserved her win here.
Beautiful performance. Probably her best! Can't even imagine being able to be at your best with the pressure that goes with the Olympics, not to mention the hype around Nancy and Tonya leading up to this event! Also, concerning Tonya Harding, I think it's almost become folklore that the judges and fans were against her. I was there at Nationals during those years and I can tell you when Harding skated well, the audience went absolutely nuts for her, and the judges rewarded her with great scores. I was one of her biggest fans! Still am!
Tonya's biggest enemy, despite her frequent charges, was always herself. It's true, the skating community viewed her with a more skeptical eye than someone (like Nancy) who was willing to play the political games and pander to the judge's advisements. Big part of skating then- probably now, too, though I don't watch anymore- is the politics. I admire Tonya to a certain extent to "stick to her guns" and allow her raw talent to shine despite the naysayers. She was capable of winning - Skate America 1991 is one of her greatest triumphs, still a joy to watch- but she became too smugly arrogant in her own way. Intentionally wearing the most garish inappropriate costumes, not bothering to stay in shape, practice, prepare for events or even take control of her health issues and quit smoking. Not to mention plotting amongst the goon squad to "take out" her most irksome rival. Naturally, Tonya was burned by the flames of her own arrogance and contempt towards others, especially those who only wanted to help her. It's undeniable how incredibly talented she was as a young woman, the true tragedy of Tonya Harding is that she herself threw it all away- she really could have had it all.
@@slsl5243I love Miss Harding, but I completely agree with you. I would also add that one of the tragedies of her life (of which there were many) was her falling out with Dodi Teachman. It was under her tutelage that she was at her best as a skater.
I love watching this performance, Nancy was so beautiful! I know people say mean stuff about her teeth but it's because of the procedure they used to do in the past (like Farah Fawcett). And even though I think she is great and the judge said later that Nancy deserved the gold and he made a mistake, I think it's fine that she got Silver. Oksana was 16, so it's very impressive that she was that talented at such a young age.
Which judge are you referring to who said he made a mistake ? Because the East German judge CBS's 60 Minutes program interviewed him 25 later and showed him Nancy's skate. He said he still feels Oksana should have won and he scored correctly.
28 years later, I still watch this performance in awe of how brilliantly Nancy skated...and particularly after the attack not long before it. If memory serves, the huge double flip in the beginning was intended to be a triple. But what I don't remember is whether the triple toe, triple toe combination was planned, or was that combo thrown in impromptu for added difficulty?
Kerrigan did a beautiful floaty routine. Baiul had more energy and exuberance. I also think oxana had a more complicated footwork. Oxana Baiul deserved the win. Nancy Kerrigan thought she deservered the win because of the drama surrounding her.
I remember watching this in 1994 and being underwhelmed. Watching it today, it's even more underwhelming considering what the Russian ladies are putting out there now! I mean they are not only skating with elegance and grace but landing quad jumps and triple-triples with ease! Nancy's big jump was the double axel, which hardly seems a challenge anymore. What made up for her lack of technical skill was her natural grace and beautiful choreography.
You can't compare then to now. A double axel was a very competitive jump by the standards of 1994. Also, she had combination jumps which Oksana lacked. Triple axels were very rare and almost never done back then (Midori Ito and Tonya Harding being notable exceptions, and even they could barely pull it off) and in fact they are still a struggle for the top skaters today. And no ladies were doing quads until very recently, and it's really only 15/16 year olds who can do them. But I agree that this performance was underwhelming even for the day -- not because it's lacking in technical skill, which it wasn't for the time, but because it is lacking in artistry and choreography. You have it backwards.
@Brian Mann Nancy's big jump was not a double axel, though she nearly always landed those with ease. She had a consistent triple lutz, especially in her technical programs when it was done in combination. She was doing the triple/triple for years when the only other person doing a triple/triple was Kristi. I only saw Michelle Kwan accomplish a triple/triple once in her career, and she certainly didn't do it at either of her Olympic performances (though I wish she had). Nancy also had pretty consistant triple salchows, triple loops, and triple toes. She had a big, beautiful triple flip that was less consistent, though she - among other occasions - landed it at '93 Piruetten and at '92 Olympics. She also had great basic skating skills, including great edging & great flow over the ice. And she had lovely artistry, and felt the music. Some moves considered awkward today were considered avante garde in her time. I would argue that many Russian skaters today have a lack of good, basic skating skills and sacrifice all - including good technique - for their jumps.
That's what it's all about: the elements, the content, the execution and the complete package. Oksana that night wasn't even top 5 for free skate. It's sad to say, but as the years go on, it shows more and more and it's embarrassing to the sport and other ladies.
I don't know much about the drama and the backstories, but for me I prefer Nancy Kerrigan's performance to Oksana's. The jumps here are so much more graceful to me. And is something so beautiful and poignant about it. I had chills watching Nancy's while I didn't get the same chills from Oksana. However Oksana is also a fantastic skater - and I'm not a skater so I can't comment on who deserved the gold medal. But just based on my personal preference, I love Nancy's performance! Also, as a disclaimer my opinion is not based on the morality of the skaters and how they behaved outside of the competition
@Bread And Circuses Tonya may have been one of the best skaters in the world at one time, but by the 94 Olympics she lost much of her talents because she did not practice as much, gained weight, and smoked. The 1988 Olympic and 3 time World and US Champion said of the attack on Kerrigan that by the 1994 that Kerrigan had become a much better overall skater than Tonya, and that is why he thinks her husband planned the whole attack on Nancy. I think a former 3 time World, US, and Olympic champion might tend to know a little more about figure skating rather than some random meanspirted, lying, ugly troll on the internet.
That's fantastic Sarah 👍 I admire Nancy coming back like she did I was 7 then too not into skating but due to the attack I looked up her story.
I saw Nancy and her son on Flea Market Flip recently. She seemed like a nice person. This story confirms it.
Good to hear a nice story about Kerrigan for once. I keep hearing stories about how she was such a b----h off the rink, especially after her obvious disappointment at not getting the gold during the medals ceremony.
I wrote to her also. She sent me an autographed 5x7 taken during her 1992 LP. I still have it displayed on a shelf in my living room.
Well said! :)
They want them all to fit a mold bad have the same look. And if they don't, they get looked down upon and maybe even scored against.

It was all terribly unfair. That’s the reason Tonya’s friends decided to take matters into their own hands and kneecap Nancy. Totally the wrong thing to do, but the reasoning behind it wasn’t. Nancy was given such an unfair advantage based on how she looked, not how she skated.
The best thing I can say about Nancy here -is her costume is gorgeous. Her skating is okay. Oksana Baiul? THAT was a skater.
I was thinking the same thing!
Vera Wang
Nancy looked & skated near her best. She was acting so entitled to the gold but Oksana won this fair. She could have even not medaled had she not been overscored, or Tonya or Surya had a good skate that day! But yeah, that dress was really gorgeous...
Angel CityGirl ......Oksana Baiul took my breath away. It was like watching an angel skate.
I loved Oksana’s program. Everything about it was great. Her bright pink dress only furthering the music and her child like giddy of a skating style (which is good if anything especially for someone as young as 16)
Her dress is amazing!

Honestly I think this is a pretty good performance but I can't bring myself to fully appreciate it because I keep thinking about her talking shit about Oksana for crying..
Nobody likes a sore loser

Nancy seemed to skate slower than other skaters, is that a fair assessment?

I've heard it said that the Europeans tended to skate with more speed than Americans. It was certainly true of pairs skating.
Yes
Abe Paul judges like fast skating that’s why Kwan lost the Gold to Lipinski (not just because Tara did a triple triple)- Michelle was nervous and skated tight which is a shame because she is an all time great ❤️
She is so graceful! Nancy skates beautifully don’t get me wrong, but Tonya’s skating is exciting and keeps you on edge. I personally think Tonya’s athleticism and build would have made her a great gymnast.

It was effortless bc she was not doing much...
How is it that she gets any points at all for her 'artistic' presentation?! She raises her arms, that's basically it, needs endless time to prepare before she jumps - how is that equal to Oksana's performance where you can see
that ballet and figure skating fit together perfectly!
You and your kind of Nancy haters make me sick, all of you.
morningstar Oksana made so many mistakes and had bad landings in some. she only had 1 combination jump and the landing was sloppy.
wupperelfe I agree. She spends a lot of time with basic skating just looking elegant. Other than the requirements not a lot going on in between.
wupperelfe Oskana’s was definitely more artistic.
Looks like a safe performance as compared to Tonya's...
fAshSon nope. She did triple triple, triple lutz, triple flip. What else?
I would argue that she made it look easy.

Yes, it was clean, but the first quarter essentially were just crossovers to prepare for the jumps. A bit more footwork would have been great.
“Still smile” on your face - you mean robotic smile. Oksana’s face was alive and expressive.
There is nothing balletic about this performance.
Oksana was a good 8 years younger than her
The problem here was Nancy did a safe program while Oksana did a risky program and nailed it. I mentioned this in a previous comment but it was similar to Brian Orser vs Brian Boitano in 1988 where Orser had a flawless but safe program in the free skate while Boitano pulled all the stops and of course that death drop that was the difference.

Nancy looks pretty but definetly bores.
ur so right
Nancy came across as ignorant of the English language and uneducated
its such an interesting story because Nancy was Americas princess and even people look back on those two and Tonya is still more fun to watch than nancy. I guess money cant buy what Tonya had, the performers gift.
but money could buy better coaching, better outfits, stable housing. all things Nancy had.
Nancy stonic cold
I'd have still given her the gold three decades later. Technically, she had the cleaner and more difficult program with a 3/3 and triple lutz late in the program. She didn't miss or 2foot any landings. Artistically, she skated with style and posture, never hitting an unpleasing position. People hate on her like she was a spoiled ice princess. She was actually a shy introvert who struggled with nerves her whole career. Her family was a hard-working blue-collar family, her mom legally blind. This was a great triumph for her and her country. Amazing.
Artistry and passion in Oksana's performance will always win
... and Oksana's was the same long program she did the previous year at the World Championships. I think a new long program shows Nancy had the artistic growth.
Skating too stiff. No real smile. She looks like her smile is forced.
I think the first time someone mentioned that she looked like Katherine Hepburn, it went straight to her head.
I completely agree. I think that was also a reason the judges gave Oksana the gold instead of Nancy. Oksana’s smile came naturally, she was so happy to be on the ice and it showed, especially with that beautiful big smile towards the ending. Nancy didn’t look confident enough.
Regal, erect and inviolate, she glides unruffled across the ice , the onlooker strangely indifferent to the fate which awaits.
It always was. She was bitch
@@soomi. ya and thank goodness they gave it to Oksana.
Good skating but not for any medal. Looked like showing off practice routines. Plus, the annoying smile. The dress saved her, really.
Youre ugly.af
Many comments here are not positive. I feel the opposite...I think this was one of the most inspirational skating performances of ALL times.
It speaks to my soul!
Just imagine the incredible strength and courage it took for her to come back after that horrific attack. Her technique is flawless and her artistry is beautiful.
Comment section: all of them are Olympic judges.
I only like her dress that's it
Ezra aloyevielara sums it up perfectly haha
Then you should watch the dress figure skate without Nancy in it.😂
Graceful, strong but delicate performance.
That triple lutz at 3:52 is done so well and perfectly without flutzing.
What a beautiful, graceful skater.
I don't like her but damn the spiral sequence was so beautiful.
I never appreciated her skating back then but, now I can see her strength, skill and gracefulness.
Beautiful. Love the ending of this performance.
In front of the whole World, and the whole world is watching this, Nancy nailed it out of the park. A Gold winning performance.
Why do I laugh when seeing her facial expression
Probably because you’re gay.
@@facedownchuck Don't flatter yourself.
🦖
She looks constipated
I know a lot of people dislike her and side with Tonya after that movie…but Nancy honestly is really beautiful. Despite weird facial expressions.
Great skate by Nancy , she had a lovely style and definitely delivered in this program . Great Era for the sport !
perfect perfomance from Nancy Kerrigan, but she just did her programme, while Oksana Baiul lived on the ice
Here after watching the movie (I ,Tonya)
There’s something about her that bores..
My God. Give this poor woman a break! She spent years working towards the Olympics and then gets pulled into a scandal she had nothing to do with. Then the media storm kept the intensity boiling right up to the performances and she does a fantastic skate. What inner strength this showed. I was proud of her.
Lots of bitter 90’s skating fans in this comment section
Hannah Marie Poole agreed. I feel like if Kerrigan switched places with Harding in that whole situation, everyone would be saying how great this is. But personally I find both of them boring skaters and I don’t really care about the situation.
It’s because she was a sore loser😉
Beautiful flowing, gliding, swanlike movements, this was stunning when I first watched it back in 94, and I still never tire of watching it.
God she's boring to watch, if she didn't have "the look" there's no way people would have been that crazy over her! I can't stop watching Oksana and Tonya though, they have real talent for the sport imo Nancy does nothing special and doesn't have that wow factor!
Memories... watching her was my childhood.
A gold performance 😢
She had a bit of rock n roll in her music. She should have danced. Made it more exciting. Also didn't hold the more elegant movements.
No, she shouldn't have danced. Please no.
I like her outfit/dress💎✨
Oksana 💕
I still get chills watching this. 15 year figure skater veteran here... 😍 I actually skated with Nancy in Yarmouth. She's the sweetest person ❤️
Totally agree. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
She did miss one jump. Made it a double instead a triple.
Absolutely BORING. Silver not deserved.
They gave her the silver for the attack she suffered from Harding!
YESSSSS!! BORING
Hate all you haters this performance stands up to anything to this day her beauty her style and not just raising her arms
Such a Stunning and graceful performance, specially when you think about her having to recover from a broken knee to get there and how close to impossible that actually is ❤ she really deserved that medal
Her knee wasn’t broken
LOVE IT SO MUCHHHH! i feel high level of elegant when i watched it, she’s just really pretty, her body is amazing, her dress is amazing too, the music so elegant and also her skilll it’s just totally connected pefectly at all!🔥🔥🔥💯😍

@@melissatorrisi1 Tonya? That you?
30 years later, YOU should have won the GOLD MEDAL 🏅
Wow the performance was so good 🥺🥺🥺🥺
I love this program and Nancy's skating of it more each time I see it.
She deserved the Gold
You’re joking, right?
Nancy gave a magnificent performance and should have won the gold medal. She was the complete package of artistry, beautiful jumps, elegant lines, and power-a true champion.
She had something you can't buy with all the money she had access to, the ability to entertain a crowd. She was safe and boring.
Gorgeous costume. She's out there doing stuff I could never do- it's very, very impressive. That said, this just wasn't it. I think Oksana absolutely deserved her win here.
Beautiful and classy.
Nancy is (was) a beautiful skater. Style, grace and class. Loved watching her as she floats along the ice.
Oksana had magnetism. She knew how to play to the audience. Her performance was so beyond her years.
No judge said they made a mistake? And there were seven judges, not one.
Yeaaaaaah no the judges didn't say that lol
Which judge are you referring to who said he made a mistake ?
Because the East German judge CBS's 60 Minutes program interviewed him 25 later and showed him Nancy's skate.
He said he still feels Oksana should have won and he scored correctly.
28 years later, I still watch this performance in awe of how brilliantly Nancy skated...and particularly after the attack not long before it. If memory serves, the huge double flip in the beginning was intended to be a triple. But what I don't remember is whether the triple toe, triple toe combination was planned, or was that combo thrown in impromptu for added difficulty?
It was planned. She did it at previous world championships too. It was her way of trying to keep up with Tonya and Kristi who had harder tech as well.
The triple/triple was planned. 🙂
Unbeliveable that the video taken at 1994 because it was clear in HD
Kerrigan did a beautiful floaty routine. Baiul had more energy and exuberance. I also think oxana had a more complicated footwork. Oxana Baiul deserved the win. Nancy Kerrigan thought she deservered the win because of the drama surrounding her.
Am I the only one who prefers her performance over Tonyas? Personality aside of course
I do ... Tonyas skating annoys me ... while hers is a bit boring.... she is definitely a more polished skater to me
inez mickel I kinda liked Nancy’s music 😂
@@lomejordelamusicacristiana4474 music was fine....I'm talking about her lack In artistry
I like Tonya’s performance more to be honest. It’s a lot more entertaining to watch her skate than Nancy
@@automnejoy5308 Nah, Nancy's routine was safe and boring. Nothing like the artistry Oksana displayed. You have it backwards
@@variousJnames I guess you can''t read. I literally said it was lacking in artistry and choreography.
Duh really? Comparing to now?
She is beautiful, graceful and talented!
Looking at performance of Nancy. I feel she performs better than Oksana Buiel. I am not Nancy fan honwstly. But just looking at each elements
That's what it's all about: the elements, the content, the execution and the complete package. Oksana that night wasn't even top 5 for free skate. It's sad to say, but as the years go on, it shows more and more and it's embarrassing to the sport and other ladies.
@@alexsdb9712 I feel ISU never improve till now
WOW how come it's so artistically good!!! Her landings are too angelical
Nancy i gotta tell ya you blew me away with your performance your skating was amazing and very strong and powerful
Love this performance. Represented the US so great!
Wow she is so elegant and soft on ice and so much control..I have no words to praise her...she is amazing...
@Bread And Circuses Jealous hater 😡
So elegant to look at. Beautiful understated dress, long lines of her limbs and torso. Too bad about that attitude at getting silver
For real. Who wins silver and is upset about it... If she wanted gold she should have pushed herself, not Stayed safe
