When I get dressed in the morning, and I put something on, if I go to immediately take it off, I force myself to look at it on in the mirror and say why I am taking it off. Why don’t I want to wear it today? Uncomfortable? Not flattering? Don’t hang it back up! Just get rid of it! This method has been a great way to declutter my closet but keep the things that I love.
I have been doing something similar. Realizing that if I don’t want to wear it there is likely reason and sometimes I realize I just don’t love it on me anymore and off it goes to the donation pile.
I found a way to let go of things finally. I had a wollen coat that belonged to my grandmother. We were very close and id kept it since she passed in 2011. Ive never worn it because its 3 sizes too small for me. A lady that helps homeless people in our area was recently asking for warm coat donations. I finally was willing to let it go at the thought of it helping keep someone else in need warm at night instead of it just hanging around in my closet. I think my grandma would have liked that. 😊
11 jackets (outerwear) in my closet - not counting blazers- live in the frozen north with 4 seasons and walk outside multiple times per week. I embrace wearing them all 🥰
I found a solution to having too many cloths I could not part with......yet. I first got rid of all the cloths I know I will not wear or do not like that much. But I found many cloths item, mostly sweaters and nice blouses I still like, but was cluttering my closet. I separated from that a small subset to leave in my closet for every day use. The rest I neatly sorted and put in another place to access when my day to day cloths need replacing, my "shopping area". I should not need to buy anything but underwear and socks for a long time. But my closet is now very neat and uncluttered.
I've been using this "wearing out" system myself for several years now, after my initial declutter, and I'm happy with this way of "decluttering" also. 😊
I found that counting the items actually helped me with perspective. It’s easy to have a lot of something and to justify each item one at a time, it’s hard to justify a large number all at once. I looked through my fishing gear a few years ago - I had 17 fishing rods. I can justify a use for each of them, but I can’t justify owning 17 at once, counting them out put a number to my absurdity lol
I really love this episode, shopping used to be my hobby until my shelves started pulling off the wall due to the weight of my stored clothes ten years ago. It was my wake up call that storage was ruining my house. I declutterred down to ten boxes of clothes. I was so proud of myself and ecstatically told my friend who asked me why do I have ten boxes of clothes in the first place. I’ve since stopped buying clothes and is now down to six drawers. My friend’s cat has more clothes than me.
I'm a home organiser with ADHD, my problem was not being able to part with anything. But I LOVE fashion, I love having lots of clothes, I just want to use them, 100% agree that I should use them. *This is what I did :* 1- Organise the space, took out everything and saw the space I had (with bins, hangers, new shelves). Now I know the space I have if I want my closet to close and not have stuff fall on my face when I open it and make me feel anxious. 3 - Determined what was the most important for me (this part of the closet will be for the belts, this for shoes, this for dresses,..) depending on my lifestyle. (Do I prefer having a shelf full of shoes, or half shoes half clothes ?). Once I decided, there's no craming stuff everywhere, it has to stay neat. 4 - Then I started putting back in my favourite items first, whatever didn't fit I had to declutter because I didn't have the room. However, my organising system with the bins made me gain so much space, I could actually fit everything in + more (uh oh xD) So I put everything back in nicely, at least it looked good and fit. 6- Now I could relax and feel better, but when I opened my closet I didn't want to wear anything, I didn't feel joy, I felt burdened. I hang on to things so bad I didn't want to get rid of any of my clothes despite not liking them. So I started looking for second hand items that would replace my old clothes, and little by little I felt more and more joy when I opened my closets. I still have a lot of clothes but now I wear all of them, I want them and I take care of them. This also helps me declutter, I don't feel the need to keep everything like a little pack rat. This is my way of being a minimalist. Hope this helps ^^
ha ha I just had a great laugh. I took a shirt out of the closet and ask when was the last time I wore it. It's been years! Of course I thought, I'll wear it this year to a certain function. I then laughed out load realizing that I was not going to wear it. It is now going to be use as another rag/towel for cleaning my bicycles.......you guys are great! Keep up the good work. Peace.
I have 3 pairs of shoes and 2 pairs of flip-flops. I have 3 pairs of jeans and 2 pairs of nice slacks. I have 8 short sleeve tee shirts. I could go on. I am 74, I wear lots of old clothes most of the time. My nicest clothes are office casual. But I love costume jewelry. I'm near Chicago. Tina, Al's wife
Matt D'Avella's video about 16 underwear and 16 pairs of sox, black/white/grey changed my life. I go two weeks going through everything, and then I wash twice a month. Super simple & purposeful/logical. 5 black tees, 5 white tees. Still have a problem with jackets, pants, and shoes though, depending on daily work needs. Used to do one size fits all, one shoe and two jackets until I learned about layering systems. I have 7 pairs of shoes that I switch between months for seasonal style as a sneaker rotation. Not daily switch, but monthly. I also hide the unused shoes in a box until the next month.
I know how Jacob feels & I would have put his numbers to shame! I love clothes & have been the same size for 20 years & hardly ever got rid of anything. I was overwhelmed & wasn't finding a decluttering solution that fit my comfort level, so I created my own. In 2022, I decided by the end of the year I would let go of 20% of items in each category. That was a comfortable pace for me & I was successful, so I did the same thing in 2023. I plan to do the same thing this year, but admit it feels harder as I go. I decided to start Project 333 in October & I'm in my 2nd season. I think by the end of the 4th season, I will have so much more clarity around what to declutter next. The journey doesn't have to be frustrating...but you may have to create your own unique method & path along the way!
Turn hangers the opposite direction and only put the hanger back normal once an article of clothing you've worn and washed. After a week or two weeks of wearing your clothes, you closet will speak to you what to keep and what to get rid of
Loved both pieces of advice! It’s not about the numbers! It’s not a competition of being a “good minimalist” because even minimalists can love jackets! Start with the obvious! 🙌❤️
Put aside what you wear the most. Pull out what you wear the least and donate it. Damaged stuff replaces paper towels and cleaning rags. I like the advice of getting rid of one item at a time. That's what I'm doing now.
Love this episode!! I need to get rid a lot of what is hanging in my closet not worn very often. Every time I let go of stuff I don't need, it is like releasing a weight 🙌
How I declutter each season (only have two) is I turn the hangers backwards in the closet. As I wear something I turn it around the correct way. When I see a hanger backward after a month or so, I purposely wear the item to see why I haven't worn it yet. Sometimes, it was just too fancy for what I had going on recently, and others I realized I really didn't enjoy wearing it for whatever reason. From there you can decide what to do with it.
I just did a massive declutter and I have done the same things with what’s left! Turned the hangers backwards and as I wear something I put it back the right way. More culling to be done! 🎉
If you don't mind me asking, what do you do with the clothes that you do not hang? I have a tiny closet with about 15cm of hanging space, the rest lives in drawers.
I have very little clothes left in drawers but perhaps you can move things from left to right as you youse them? Or put everything in a box and whatever is still in the box after x amount of time you just donate
TK hit the nail on the head when he said about needing to know the next 10 steps it's so funny that because you just need to start with one but it's like your brain tries to convince you otherwise
My partner is a minimalist (actually was before it was a thing) and he is the extreme opposite where he had just one pair of good pants, they ripped a day before he had a visit to a doctor so he went to buy a new pair last minute 😂
My husband also. When I found out he only had one pair of dress pants, I freaked out and bought him multiple pairs since he had to wear them for work. He doesn’t need dress pants for work anymore, so now he only has two pairs of jeans. No idea where the dress pants went.
To me I just remind myself it’s the long term costs associated with all the items. The electricity, the cleaning products etc. That’s what pushed me further and further.
I’m afraid I am in the same place with the jackets. My husband and I both have a thing for jackets. This fall I bought the same jacket in 3 sizes because the fit is different depending on what I’m wearing underneath ($25 each at Walmart). I LOVE these jackets so I could start with jackets I don’t love as much.
I found that to use an app to catalog my clothes was a big help to lose the fear of letting go. It changed my life. When you make the effort of cataloging everything the work is done! No more thinking about today's or tomorrow's outfit. The app helps to make combinations and I actually use all my stuff. Without the app I end up forgetting many itens and fall in the 80/20 trap.
I hate shopping and I hate being wasteful. I'm outdoorsy, work on cars and more. I struggle most with knowing when to get rid of stained and heavily worn clothes. I've seen people embrace wearing worn, torn, and stained clothes. But, society still judges people for doing this. How do you know when it's time to replace or keep them?
I'm a painter so everything I wear is painted and stained. I just put a number on the items. I need seven pants, seven shirts. I get rid of the most stained ever so often when I buy a new item.
It’s is not a time frame game, but more of a need. I don’t wear my dressier pieces as much. But I do make sure to only have ones that are versatile to be worn at different levels of dressing up. So it’s one jacket one long skirt one pair of pants. But they can be worn with a jean jacket or bottom. Or together, when the once in a while need comes up. Also. I retired. So yes. I’m in comfortable gym clothes. I have a black capsule wardrobe/ uniform and take advice from Calvin Klein…. Effort in to outerwear. It is what changes with need and mood. On another note, may I have a round of applause because I did part ways with my vintage red cowboy boots. I have two others I wear often. I did not wear these, but I really liked them. Now someone else is really liking them and wearing them. I love organizing and living with intention and love giving people tips to get there. And I like thinking about happy someone is when they get a cool piece that I’m no longer wearing. Like my old leather jacket is about to make my friend’s kid jump over the moon!
To avoid overwhelm do minimizing in stages. I'm moving & have to fit everything in suv. Handle each item; the instinct of how much do i love/usefulness of this item will surface, i.e. Marie Kondo method.
Wow. lol. I can’t use our foyer closet because my husbands coats and jackets take up all of it. All of it. And the coat and hat rack. I have one that I wear to walk the dogs and one for going out that’s nice. But nowhere to hang my coat unless it’s just draped on top of the door. The man also has all of the dresser, a small dressing room where it’s and a coat rack and hat storage reside, FIVE full closets, I have never once parked my car inside the garage in the 12 years we’ve lived in this ridiculously too large house. And every damn day is another delivery package. Yesterday after the third one in very quietly and calmly ask if he thinks maybe he has a shopping addiction. He said yeah probably. Then I added, and maybe an issue with hoarding and clutter? It would be a good idea to figure that out for your own wellness. And my own damn sanity but I’m invisible in this marriage.
I have learned that I buy a lot of clothing, because I grew up fairly lower middle class and got picked on because I wore the same clothes often. I also have 3 younger brothers who would steal my socks. So i now have dozens of pairs of socks and a lot of underwear, while not having too many pairs of pants or shirts....I really do try to limit my clothing purchases. Being 6'5" and weighing 300 lbs makes it hard to find clothes in small towns.
I own 5 blue poloshirts, 5 white polos, 5 T-Shirts, 5 pairs of shoes, 1 short jeans, 2 long jeans, 5 same white dress-shirts, one pullover, 1 (22 yrs old) windbreaker-jacket. 10 pairs of white socks, 10 underpants. 1 Mbp, 1 iPad Pro, 1 iPad mini (my mobile library). 1 iPhone 12. 1 camera with 3 lenses. 1 Waterbottle, 1 glass. 1 travelers notebook. And of course :-) my toothbrush. Everything i own on this planet fits exactly in one big travelsuitcase and a boardingcase. In my condo i have one big handmade wooden table for work, eating and 2 beds - one for guests and one for me. Thats it. And i love it - i wear the same simple look now for years and people accepted it. I always look the same and i love it, its so light and easy. And you know what ? You guys brougth this ide to me. Thx ! Greets from Manila.
Well, last year I did the fastest decluttering ever. Hurricane Ian destroyed my house, my car, and all the contents. Overnight I owned 2 pair shoes, 1 skirt, three shirts and tees, one nighty, one bathing suit, underwear and toiletries for three days. Now I own two sneakers, three dress shoes, soon to be two because one pair hurts, and three pair gardening shoes. And I never felt the need for more. The hurricane was painful, but the resulting philosophy f less is more is wonderful. 9:40
If I buy some clothing, I have to get rid of an item of clothing. I don't have a wardrobe, only draws and so if the clothes can't fit in the draws, something has to go!
I keep reducing my clothing and shoes. I committed to any new purchases need to be from a sustainable company and say no fast fashion. On a humorous note, my ex-husband had 190 shirts, 30+ khaki shorts, and 30+ ties. The same shirts were worn. I had to hang most of my clothes in a hall closet because there was no room for my clothes. I continue to move to things that I love and use.
Shoes: I have 3 weather boots (snow, rain, hiking), dog walking shoes, indoor workout shoes, 1 pair heels, and 7 other pairs of shoes. 😑 and indoor slipper house shoes (hard floors and foot trouble). So that’s 12. Shoes are my challenging category.
At one point I had 48 pairs of shoes, because I worked a corporate VP job and had to dress the part, and also enjoyed a very outdoor lifestyle of hiking, running, walking, etc. I also have taken good care of them so they are in very good condition. But, I have committed to not buying any more shoes and getting rid of them as they age in place. I am living in a tiny house and on a very minimal budget of $1200 per month, by choice so shopping is not an activity I engage in. I have a lot of business clothes that I will be selling or giving away.
I cannot remember who I heard this from, but I heard of this concept that when setting up a new habit to purposefully have goals that are not only achievable, but downright super easy for the first few weeks or so until the habit is well formed. like if it is exercising it might be starting with 2 pushups every Monday Wednesday, and Friday. The idea is that those 2 pushups are not going to do your body all that much good, but if it forms the habit and then you progress with the habit you will become much more fit than the guy who does 100 pushups in one day then decides this working out thing is not for him. Although, I think some folks really need to start with a purge to get rid of a lot of stuff quickly to make their lives manageable, but for other people and for the same people at other times it is the habit that is much more powerful than the one time purge.
3 jackets, 10 pairs of shoes, 7 jeans, 7 socks and 10 underwear. Haven 't count the tops, but have more because I have long sleeve, short sleeve and sleeveless.
I did that last night took all my t shirts, harley. .and took then divide them into colors black and others, then tried them I narrowed them down and got up this morning on took other items out for a second look..
I think it should be 333 plus 2. Add two to the list you are on the fence about and try to wear them during that 3months. If you never go to them, get rid of and add another one if you get rid of before 3 months are up. I think 2 would be good limit or 1 ,not to get too overwhelmed.
My way of dealing with this problem is to not buy anything new until I end up with no cloths what so ever. I have a lot of shoes but I will not buy new ones until I end up with no shoes to wear. So the problem will just filter it self out. At least for now that is the way I am dealing with it. I also throw away any clothes which I do not like or obviously not good any more.
Good video and concept. Question though, from everything I’ve seen socks and underwear don’t count towards the 33 items. There are other exceptions too such as workout gear, wedding rings and lounge wear.
What do you do with the clothes and shoes that are worn out or perhaps torn, missing buttons? Goodwill and thrift shops don't want these. I live in a very eco-friendly area but no one recycles these things locally. I've heard that there might be industries where they do recycle textiles. Any clues?
I live in a homeless shelter now; I have 2 pants, 4 shirts, 6 socks, 5 underwear, 1 jacket, 1 hoodie, and one pair of San Antonio Shoe Company running sneakers.
My goal is to have 5 short sleeve polo shirts, 5 Hensley shirt, 4 zip up sweaters, 1 (3 in 1) jacket, 4 pair of shoes.3 jeans and 3 shorts. This would be for all 4 seasons.
Why on earth did you take your dress shirts to the cleaners - I realise it’s irrelevant now - but why not just wash and dry at home? That must have been so expensive.
I used to like to listen to their podcasts. But can someone explain what woman is always cackling off camera? I can’t bear to listen to it. It’s like a bad laugh track.
If I let go of my clothes that are too small, I feel like I am letting go of believing I will ever lose the extra 30 pounds on my body. @theminimalists
For me it was a negative thought process. By the time I lose my 40 lbs. the clothes will be out of style, and/or I'll want to buy myself new clothes. Also, walking in my closet and realizing the money involved was depressing.
How many pairs of shoes do you own?
15 total including flip flops , and slides . 😊
2 pairs of boots, 1 pair of regular shoes, 1 pair of clogs, 2 pairs of tennis shoes, 2 pairs of flip flops.
Nothing crazy, Sub 10 but I still lost count...
7 including my 2 work boots. I need to buy 2 for warm days and rest my toes 'cause of a nails problem.
One pair of boots for work, a pair of sneakers, and slip-on for around the house.
When I get dressed in the morning, and I put something on, if I go to immediately take it off, I force myself to look at it on in the mirror and say why I am taking it off. Why don’t I want to wear it today? Uncomfortable? Not flattering? Don’t hang it back up! Just get rid of it!

This is a great strategy and habit! I’ll be doing that this year!
I do this!

Clothes or cloths?
@@heidic1398yep that is minimalism gone to far if someone is wearing cloths 😂
I've been using this "wearing out" system myself for several years now, after my initial declutter, and I'm happy with this way of "decluttering" also. 😊
It's definitely a less wasteful way of decluttering and actually making use of things you spend money on. 😊

The stuff that you love, is the one you need and use. Minimalist for four years now, and enjoying the journey. ❤
This is the most gentle, sympathetic video on this I've ever heard ❤

Yeeeessssssssss

Thats a true minimalist but not a good planner ;)I have a word document where I track my clothes expenses and « need » list.
My husband also. When I found out he only had one pair of dress pants, I freaked out and bought him multiple pairs since he had to wear them for work. He doesn’t need dress pants for work anymore, so now he only has two pairs of jeans. No idea where the dress pants went.

How different we are, in a good way. I do not like the counting approach, so I stick to *what I love* and quality over quantity. 😊

Donate used clean towels, rugs, t-shirts to animal shelters. Car and bike shops can use old clothes as rags, tear into smaller sizes.
This makes me think about how often he does his laundry?
To avoid overwhelm do minimizing in stages. I'm moving & have to fit everything in suv. Handle each item; the instinct of how much do i love/usefulness of this item will surface, i.e. Marie Kondo method.
Thank you guy's for this video needed to start my year off!
Wow.
Maybe he should of married his clothes!!!
Me over here just being TK’s biggest fan. ❤️ U TK
Thanks for sharing this excerpt. It's a great starting point for me to pair down my closet. 🤘🏻
Could dig it if you guys could talk about tiny house living. Seems really interesting
Love these guys❤
That's a wonderful concept: 33 items to wear 3 months.
2:57 he's still winning over my clutter coffin of sunk cost outfits 😂
I have a lot of socks but got on sale. I havnt had buy them in years. I don't worry about it for long time
I have about 12 pairs but only regularly wear 5-6 of them
I own 5 blue poloshirts, 5 white polos, 5 T-Shirts, 5 pairs of shoes, 1 short jeans, 2 long jeans, 5 same white dress-shirts, one pullover, 1 (22 yrs old) windbreaker-jacket.
This is what I do. If I buy something I get rid of something
Cardigans are my weakness 😂
I keep reducing my clothing and shoes. I committed to any new purchases need to be from a sustainable company and say no fast fashion. On a humorous note, my ex-husband had 190 shirts, 30+ khaki shorts, and 30+ ties. The same shirts were worn. I had to hang most of my clothes in a hall closet because there was no room for my clothes. I continue to move to things that I love and use.
Happy New Year!! 🥂🥳🎄❤️
Is it useful? Is it beautiful to you? Do you feel good in it? That last one especially. If I can't answer yes to all of those then it goes.
I'm getting there with my clothing x
The limitations actually create freedom.
Yes a suggestion is go by category...since its winter ...try and wear wll your jackets..ehat you dont like or wear .. donate and so on
I cannot remember who I heard this from, but I heard of this concept that when setting up a new habit to purposefully have goals that are not only achievable, but downright super easy for the first few weeks or so until the habit is well formed. like if it is exercising it might be starting with 2 pushups every Monday Wednesday, and Friday.
Yes. Same., but I still keep limited undergarments and assessories.
I have 10 pairs of shoes. Five fall/winter boots and five summer shoes/sandals.
This is something that I am working with.
3 pairs of shoes - 1 pair runners, 1 pair sandals, 1 pair black dress shoes - haha!
My dog is helping me get rid of my shoes 🤣
Lol😂😂😂😂😂😂
We don’t have that much space in Europe for all that stuff 😂😂
12 this includes shoes, winter boots and sandals
I love maximalism😊
All you need is 14 of each
What do you do with the clothes and shoes that are worn out or perhaps torn, missing buttons? Goodwill and thrift shops don't want these. I live in a very eco-friendly area but no one recycles these things locally. I've heard that there might be industries where they do recycle textiles. Any clues?
That girls laugh. Lord.
It's jarring for sure. And it seems to come out of the dark depths, lol
So distracting. Feels forced. Other than her interruptions great content. Pls consider removing the loud laughter.
I love hearing an enthusiastic hearty laugh. It makes me smile every time.😁
Me too but that’s a cackle 🤷🏻♀️
I live in a homeless shelter now; I have 2 pants, 4 shirts, 6 socks, 5 underwear, 1 jacket, 1 hoodie, and one pair of San Antonio Shoe Company running sneakers.
My goal is to have 5 short sleeve polo shirts, 5 Hensley shirt, 4 zip up sweaters, 1 (3 in 1) jacket, 4 pair of shoes.3 jeans and 3 shorts. This would be for all 4 seasons.
Oh my gosh, over 50 probably.
Too many to count, over a hundred?
😳 that just makes me think, how much money have you spent buying over 100 pairs of shoes? And where do you put them all?
TMTC 😊
I was feeling guilty but you may have beaten me.
1x Steel cap boots, 1x flip flops, 1x sneakers
Interesting discussion. Discussion could be minimalist too.
Lol, I have sooooooo much more than those numbers 🤦🏾
Why on earth did you take your dress shirts to the cleaners - I realise it’s irrelevant now - but why not just wash and dry at home? That must have been so expensive.
6 jeans, small closet, small dresser, had to down size not much space cleaner is better, never horded but clothes. Ocd can be trained healthy.
2 shoes can't find shoes for disability have to be flat only few
It does not include underclothing.
11 pairs.
getting my 22 year old with adhd to get rid of old socks and jogging pants

17 pts of shoes
Should our society go to uniforms ?
3/season
I used to like to listen to their podcasts. But can someone explain what woman is always cackling off camera? I can’t bear to listen to it. It’s like a bad laugh track.
Some woman they call Malabama
I don‘t count, waste if time
If I let go of my clothes that are too small, I feel like I am letting go of believing I will ever lose the extra 30 pounds on my body. @theminimalists
For me it was a negative thought process. By the time I lose my 40 lbs. the clothes will be out of style, and/or I'll want to buy myself new clothes. Also, walking in my closet and realizing the money involved was depressing.
