I personally think Big Hero 6 shouldn't have gotten a nod for best animation. Like it looked good but most of its "wow look how pretty this is" moments were done better by other animated movies this year and the story was the most formulaic super hero movie in recent memory. Also the characters were really under utilized minus the main character and Baymax, I don't even remember any of the names from the rest of the 6
Couldn't disagree more. The "Baymax, destroy!" scene was one of the most powerful scenes in recent memory, and honestly thought it was better than any movie Marvel has put out except maybe the first Iron Man. Formulaic in terms of an origin story, sure, but it was still a near perfect origin story I thought.
COREY M They showed a scene of her putting the book in the fire, to make it seem like he tried to destroy evidence and she is pregnant thats how the movie ended.
COREY M you clearly weren't paying attention to the book, she put it there to frame him, it was in the fire but not completely burnt to make it seem like he was destroying evidence in a rush. but one that got left out is nightcrawler fucking amazing film and acting performance.
COREY M everything she wrote in her diary was a lie. over the years of her marriage she wrote in it to create a story. beginning was all happy love, perfect couple stuff (she did love him in the beginning). which then goes to framing nick for murder because she discovered he was cheating on her. but she wrote it as the innocent wife. wrote things like nick would get abusive etc when he wasn't as bad as he could be. she initially only burnt the diary in the nicks dads furnace to make it look like nick had done a poor job of burning it. Amy wasn't pregnant when she came back and was being examined. when she found out that nick was lying to her, she went to the sperm clinic where nicks sperm was and used it. she said that in the bedroom at the end.
It's a bigger insult that Frozen won 2014 as that movie is virtually soulless compared to Lego Movie. Shout outs to Peanuts who will win best animated movie 2016.
disagree. Frozen was better than Big hero 6 imo. They should nominate films with creativity with the design and or story. Box trolls, princess kaguya, song of the sea all fot nominations because they werent using 'now mainstream' pixar disney animation. Lego was something very different as well as Book of life (i reckon most beautiful animated film this year) and both didnt get nomination...
They should add a new category for movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, Planet of the apes, Godzilla etc.. and just call it Best fantasy movie. This year especially had some really well made superhero/fantasy movies. Just imagine next year if Star Wars and JJ.Abrams delivers a movie even half as good as Empire strikes back, it should be nominated. But that will probably NEVER happen as long as the MEN that choose the nominees are OLD as hell.
Team BZ i think just having a seperate category in the end takes away from the films. if you look at the animated film group, the existence of that group basically means that they never actually have to take the animated movies seriously they can just put them in their own category and they never have a chance of winning best picture.
Couldn't agree more! Those are my favourite movies from this year: Cap 2, Guardians and Apes :) we need more recognition for these movies on award shows! The categories that rotten tomatoes used for their golden tomato awards are great; comic book movie, sci-fi etc.
How did 'The Hanging Tree' from Hunger Games not get nominated for best original song? They're even playing a remix of it on the radio. Easily one of the best & most memorable songs in film last year.
Personally I believe Andy Serkis' portrayal of Ceasar deserves more recognition. His methods of expressing subtle emotion with his face is comparable to legends like Karloff's Frankenstein or Mummy.
Lego Movie was robbed ONLY of a nomination (kicking either Big Hero 6 or Boxtrolls out), but it's Princess Kaguya's award to lose. It's not just the better the animated movie, it's the best film in the category by far. It's universally acclaimed movie with a damn 100% rating and a higher audience rating than Lego Movie, by 5%.
blackmanwithcomputer Literally nobody on Rotten Tomatoes votes in the Oscars. They're critics and journalists. The people who vote at the Oscars are actual filmmakers who work in the industry. Learn your shit. Besides, there's no way Kaguya is beating How to Train Your Dragon 2
Adam Lewis Probably not, but that's because not nearly as many people have seen it or are open to watching it. If they did Kaguya would surely win. It's the vastly superior film to not just the Lego Movie (which I really liked), but any animated film in recent times.
The Academy, you would think, would award at least a nom for an animated film that pushed the technical boundaries of the medium AND was great narrative-wise... And yet life goes on.
Man I'm so upset about the Lego movie. It was easily one of the best movies this year. Also nightcrawler was so good. It was so good. I thought gyllenhaal was an easy winner for best actor
Lego Movie was a huge snub! But you didn't discuss what your UK coworkers discussed briefly which was that do you think they didn't nominate it because of the live-action scenes? Is there some fine print that says it can't include any live-action? But seriously huge snub! And know it will never happen but can we get a motion capture and voice over award. Sadly won't be til Andy Serkis dies that we get a award named after him that honors motion-capture performances.
Yeah, I believe the rule is 75% of the film must be animated. Wall-E won an Oscar and that had a few brief live-action sections in the same vein as Happy Feet.
Although you can have 5-10 movies in the best picture category. The movie has to gain 5% of 1st place votes. This year only 8 movies got over that threshold
The Lego movie is very well made I gotta say. I mean I was just watching it couple days ago, there was this scene on the ocean, and I think it's kind of amazing how they made that ocean made out of thousands of Lego pieces into a stormy, living ocean with stop motion. They litereally had to move a few specific different pieces on each shot (which there were like 300 shots or more I'd say) to produce that illusion of moving water. And I think, that for a children's or family movie it had a good story line. But I don't know. I think that the stop motion animation itself should've got an oscar.
What makes you think I was cg? To me it looked like stop motion with real Lego bricks. The lighting and shades and everything was too realistic for it to be cg, it looked like real Legos. Stop motion at 24fps with that level of action and detail is very impressive to me.
LegoTechPlane Computer rendering has come really far since Toy Story dude. The stop motion aesthetic was intentional, but fabricated. Making a movie of that caliber and scope using stop motion would take many years and a whole lot of dough. It wouldn't be realistically feasible.
Josh Leitzel Dough? It's made out of Lego, the whole animation is made out of Lego brick except for some backgrounds (like city skylines). Doing it in stop motion would take many years, yes, if it was one person doing it. There are a lot of people working on this, filming different parts... I think it's very possible. I don't know what makes you think it's computer animation, but if you could tell me I'd appreciate that.
The film is meant to resemble stop motion Lego animations to give it a sort of nostalgic feel. That was intended. But the actual film was made using CG. They purposely made the animation slightly jerky to achieve that visual style. Here are two good links I found at the top of the page after a quick Google search: screencrush.com/making-of-lego-movie/ www.thecredits.org/2014/02/how-the-lego-movie-got-its-stop-motion-look/ There was a bit of actual stop motion used in the more simplistic scenes, and the creators studied actual lego bricks under microscopes to make them look as real as possible in CG. And like I said, with the current technology available, you can make CG look extremely life like. And like they said in the article, Using actual Lego bricks would cost millions of dollars. I mean, c'mon. A decent sized Lego set will set you back around 50 bucks, so that large amount is pretty believable.
Besides Lego Movie, I would have to say Andy Serkis for Cesar in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I understand why they wouldn't nominate him, because of all the CGI, but come on his performance is there, its just covered in ape CGI. But to me it falls under the same line of it being something like the The Artist of a couple of years ago or silent films. What he is able to do performance wise with very little dialogue should get some sort of recognition.
I was surprised too.. but i think i know the reason. i think that Lego the Movie is based on a " Brand ". so i think the Judges won't put it onto the list because it just will make a "Free Advertising". same happened with 'Rush' last year that based on Formula 1 brands.
Jake gylinhal was snubbed for nightcrawler he was awesome in that movie he should have been nominated . Interstellar should have been nominated for best picture and christopher nolan for best director.
my thoughts of this of the oscars is like this im going to start by: 1- saying how disappointing i am from most of movie reviewers "im sorry to say this" by the fact that the non english category in the oscar is never spoken in this channels i watch Ida the poland movie and it was so touching also i watch recently the argentinian movie Wild tales "Relatos salvajes"and is so GOOD i know for folks in america is hard to get this movies but at least announce that we have seen this movies and maybe u get comments on people that had saw them and get recommendations. 2- from the animation category i think was fair for the most part i watch princess kaguya and it was one of the most beautiful and artistic animated films i saw and deserves it place at the oscars for song of the sea i have not see it but the trailers look so awesome i want to see it and this is the opinion of a animation hardcore fan but i will say that both movies that were snob (lego movie and book of life) they were better movies than boxtrolls to me however boxtrolls got point because stop motion animation is not easy at all so i respect that. "i agree on both kaguya and song of the sea nominations cuz if they dont nominated them people will criminally overlooked those movies because they are not AMERICAN like if they don't exist lego movie is WB don't need the oscar to be seen" 3- the not nomination of selmas director and david oyelowo is a snob horrible selma needs more love. 4- the lack of nightcrawler at all hurt me that movie needed to be there (from Jake Gyllenhaal to directing and even for best movie) i will there to say maybe more than american sniper although american sniper is still a amazing movie nonetheless. 5- kobe bryant / superman/ god a.k.a meryl streep they should give her another oscar and don't nominated her again to let other people a chance. out of this points the oscars have good choices for this year in the most part thanks ^
I think all these people banging on about Lego movie deserved Oscar is stupidly ott. Not because its a animated movie and only "films" about real life Issues etc should get such a award. But more because the Lego Movie itself was not filmed in stop-motion. It is essentially just a cgi animated movie, but filmed in a way to look like its stop motion, thats the deception.
Jake Gyllenhaal is the biggest snub for me. I mean Steve Carrel was a supporting actor so take him out of best actor and put him in supporting actor. Take Robert Duvall out of the race completely. Then finally I don't know what to do with Bradley Cooper because American Sniper wasn't great and Bradley Cooper was good but basically played Captain America
TBH 2014 was a bad year of games, movies, and overall just a meh year. The only thing I'm actually kind of pissed was all of the nominees for Best Original Song. I just wish "The Last Goodbye" should of atleast got nominated...
Games, yes. Many disappointments and duds. Movies, no fucking way. 2014 was a fantastic year for cinema, but the Academy convoluted itself and made some of its categories completely messy
Wow How to train your dragon didnt really deserve a nomination, it was no way as good as the first one. The book of life and Lego movie shouldve at least got a nomination
il go only on the animation i don't watch song of the sea yet i dying to see it but i saw tales of princess kaguya and it's my year favorite animated movie better way better than lego movie for me and im sorry for those who may give me hate for this but it is the best and most beautiful movie and also this traditional not big studio animation needs to be see i mean traditional 2d animation and non american movies need more love however i saw boxtrolls was a good movie but definitely not better than lego movie and i know i will gate hate from this but how to train ur dragon 2 was the weakest movie of them all of the nominated and the not nominated lego movie are wayWAY than that average dreamworks sequel
I don't get why people like Guardians of the galaxy so much. Honestly I thought it was so filled with cliches and it just felt like a children's movie with a lot of violence, I didn't really like it. But the visuals were nice in that film I'll give it that.
The Lego Movie isn't even an animated movie! It's fucking stop motion, NOT ANIMATION! The only thing animated about it was their faces and shit. NOTHING ELSE
Joaquin phoenix should be nominated for inherent vice. so should ralph fines for grand Budapest hotel. I agree with the lego movie too. they were robbed.
Besides the fact that I think the Lego Movie is one of the most overrated movies ever, why are you surprised that it didn't receive a nomination? It was one long ADHD trip with very little breathing room.
The Lego movie was great and all but you can't expect it to make best picture... Like let's be honest it's about fucking Legos. Best animated? Sure! Definitely nominate it for that, but if you seriously think it was better than American Sniper or Interstellar, than you need to rethink your life.
Im not being rude but the Lego Movie sucked in animation and story. The arcs and timing weren't there half of the time. The stop motion was nice but the switch between the two were horribly done and transitioned.
Lego movie was over rated. I didn't laugh once. Wasn't worth renting. I'm sure a lot of people liked it, but I agree that it wasn't worth an award. No offense if you liked it though.
the animation category is always BS in that category by those SNUB big NOISES OLD guys that have no childhood, i can get the BS of Brave winning over "Frankenweenie", "Paranorman", "Wreck-It Ralph" than effing frozen winning over miyazaki last film "wind rises" total BS and now sunb lego movie :( and probably big hero 6 or dragon will win and that's BS cuz i like those movies big hero 6 more than how to train ur dragon 2 but they are both weaker than lego movie. i hate the oscars looking down on the art that animation i
I thought the Lego Movie was better than BH6...
I thought they were on par with each other, both were excellent movies.
COREY M I disagree
How to train your dragon 2 is best
go away you filthy brony
ToothyBoar +1 4 originul and edgemaster coment :^) *tips fedora*
I personally think Big Hero 6 shouldn't have gotten a nod for best animation. I agree, if a movie needed to be taken out, that would be Big Hero 6, pretty looking but too generic.
COREY M How to train your dragon 2 was horrible lego movie and Big hero 6 were easily the best animated movies of 2014
Mackenzie Langrell-Read totally agree.
Mackenzie Langrell-Read the tale of princess kaguya ?
This movie was very technical in it's achievement, for sure.
The oscars are rigged!!!! Gone girl, interstellar and the lego movie needed to be more prominent!!!!
Gone Girl was fantastic
No, not interstellar.

This is an injustice, Lego Movie was one of the best movies of this year. One of the best animations of the decade.
It's a bigger insult that Frozen won 2014 as that movie is virtually soulless compared to Lego Movie. Shout outs to Peanuts who will win best animated movie 2016.

THE LEGO MOVIE IS A FRIGGING ADVERTISEMENT
***** "but impressive at animation duties at the same time. :P" What language are you trying to write?
Kung fu panda 3 for 2016.
***** Could you please rephrase so it's comprehensible?
They should add a new category for movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, Planet of the apes, Godzilla etc.. and just call it Best fantasy movie.

Best sci-fi, I don't think GoTG or rise should be considered fantasy
How did 'The Hanging Tree' from Hunger Games not get nominated for best original song? They're even playing a remix of it on the radio. Easily one of the best & most memorable songs in film last year.
No way it's sounds like a simple composition
Essie Davis for the Babadook was a serious overlook.
The biggest snubs in my opinion were definitely Jake Gyllenhaal for best actor and Nightcrawler for best picture.
Nightcrawler was such an amazing movie, even though some people said it was too slow for them.
Personally I believe Andy Serkis' portrayal of Ceasar deserves more recognition. His methods of expressing subtle emotion with his face is comparable to legends like Karloff's Frankenstein or Mummy.

The Academy, you would think, would award at least a nom for an animated film that pushed the technical boundaries of the medium AND was great narrative-wise...
And yet life goes on.
Lego movie was ok not as great as what people make it out to be though... I preferred Dragons 2.
no where as good as the first one. Its only 'riding' on the success and imagination of the first one. As a standalone film its pretty mediocre.
I realise it's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but you're frankly an idiot.
Animation wise was much better then this >.>.
***** says a guy with sonic as his profile pic.
I bet you didn't even watch dragons..
I've loved Boxtrolls!
Nightcrawler snubbed for best picture
Gylenhall snubbed for best actor
Whiplash snubbed for best director
IMO
Also Antonio Sánchez didn't get nominated for "Best Original Score" for Birdman.
Man I'm so upset about the Lego movie. It was easily one of the best movies this year. Also nightcrawler was so good. It was so good. I thought gyllenhaal was an easy winner for best actor

Zombie Ducklings it did?!!!?!? I mean other than clips of old Earth
Wesley Tomsky I just meant the recording of the President of the U.S. saying that they had to evacuate Earth.
Zombie Ducklings whatever Wall e is an animation.
Wesley Tomsky I know it's animated, but there were brief live-action parts.
Although you can have 5-10 movies in the best picture category. The movie has to gain 5% of 1st place votes. This year only 8 movies got over that threshold
Guardians of the Galaxy got 2 nominations!
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
The LEGO Movie Was Robbed!
The Lego movie is very well made I gotta say. I mean I was just watching it couple days ago, there was this scene on the ocean, and I think it's kind of amazing how they made that ocean made out of thousands of Lego pieces into a stormy, living ocean with stop motion. Here are two good links I found at the top of the page after a quick Google search:
screencrush.com/making-of-lego-movie/
www.thecredits.org/2014/02/how-the-lego-movie-got-its-stop-motion-look/
There was a bit of actual stop motion used in the more simplistic scenes, and the creators studied actual lego bricks under microscopes to make them look as real as possible in CG. And like I said, with the current technology available, you can make CG look extremely life like. And like they said in the article, Using actual Lego bricks would cost millions of dollars. He will get a special achievement award in the coming years
the lego movie and jake ghyllenhal(misspelled i think) are my biggest snubs
For me, the bigger robbery was Interstellar not getting nominated for Best Picture.
Yessss
Let's honest all the films nominated were made to win Oscars all good film that actually should get nominated
LEGO the movie was by far the best though out and the deepest animation this year. How to train your dragon is the other one that came that close.
Guardians should have at least been nominated for best Adapted Screenplay, and Gone Girl.
It's fine.
I was surprised too.. but i think i know the reason. i think that Lego the Movie is based on a " Brand ". so i think the Judges won't put it onto the list because it just will make a "Free Advertising". same happened with 'Rush' last year that based on Formula 1 brands.
Yes, LEGO movie was awesome!
I was disappointed but not surprised to not see any real recognition for The Winter Solider.
Oscar , why American Sniper , the nominations most be for Nightcrawler , no American Sniper😭
Jake gylinhal was snubbed for nightcrawler he was awesome in that movie he should have been nominated . Interstellar should have been nominated for best picture and christopher nolan for best director.
LEGO MOVIE NEEDS GET A NOMINATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Am I the only one who thought that Essie Davis should have gotten a nomination for The Babadook? Why does the Academy hate the horror genre so much?!
Interstellar, Matthew McConaughey anyone?
How the he'll is MARTIN LUTHER KING JR under the radar?
Lego movie GOTG and captain murica
Why is everyone so damn mad? Calm down. Its a movie. If you don't like it, why did you come to this video to comment your hate?
my thoughts of this of the oscars is like this im going to start by:
1- saying how disappointing i am from most of movie reviewers "im sorry to say this" by the fact that the non english category in the oscar is never spoken in this channels i watch Ida the poland movie and it was so touching also i watch recently the argentinian movie Wild tales "Relatos salvajes"and is so GOOD i know for folks in america is hard to get this movies but at least announce that we have seen this movies and maybe u get comments on people that had saw them and get recommendations.
"i agree on both kaguya and song of the sea nominations cuz if they dont nominated them people will criminally overlooked those movies because they are not AMERICAN like if they don't exist lego movie is WB don't need the oscar to be seen"
3- the not nomination of selmas director and david oyelowo is a snob horrible selma needs more love.

I don't know what you consider a good game but you clearly don't play Smash Bros.
Critic's Choice Lego movie won on Thursday
Princess Kaguya is gonna win anyway.
Wow How to train your dragon didnt really deserve a nomination, it was no way as good as the first one. The book of life and Lego movie shouldve at least got a nomination
WHERE'S CHRISTOPHER NOLAN'S NOMINATION????
No movie is "better" than other, it is ALL subjective.
Objectively speaking, yeah Long Haul was worse than DOAWK trilogy
things arent going to change until the old folks get out of these positions... when lego movie and guardians get snubbed we gotta problem
This is why I don't care about the Oscars anymore...
The Academy just wants historical dramas about people looking out windows and crying. They don't like original stories.
The lego movie was okay but not worth a nomination. The real tragedy is Nightcrawler
The Lego movie was trash, and big hero 6 was amazing. Deal with it.
Haters gonna hate
You're a fucking bitch.
Everything is awesome. Deal with it.
no pixar this year either?
No Pixar movie was released. There's two slated to come out this year though.

Wallace and Gromit: Were-Rabbit was stop motion and it won Best Animated Feature. Corpse Bride was also nominated that year
What! The lego movie was the best
Joaquin phoenix should be nominated for inherent vice. so should ralph fines for grand Budapest hotel. I agree with the lego movie too. they were robbed.
Time for a little reality people, the Lego movie had a ending that was too force. Otherwise it would be an awesome movie... ;)
No one
Lego movie was over rated. I didn't laugh once. Wasn't worth renting. I'm sure a lot of people liked it, but I agree that it wasn't worth an award. No offense if you liked it though.
The LEGO Movie? Seriously? It's not That great.
4th yeah!
Lego movie!? Really?
the animation category is always BS in that category by those SNUB big NOISES OLD guys that have no childhood, i can get the BS of Brave winning over "Frankenweenie", "Paranorman", "Wreck-It Ralph" than effing frozen winning over miyazaki last film "wind rises" total BS and now sunb lego movie :( and probably big hero 6 or dragon will win and that's BS cuz i like those movies big hero 6 more than how to train ur dragon 2 but they are both weaker than lego movie.
i hate the oscars looking down on the art that animation i
People actually care about these award shows?
