  • The days of dairy farming have evolved tremendously since hand milking and horse drawn plows. In fact, every advancement has been well thought out and executed allowing farmers to be better caretakers of their animals and their land while producing a healthy and safe product.
This video highlights three generations of dairy farmers at various stages of their career. You’ll witness their excitement and passion for the industry they live and love as they continue to prosper and grow every day.

Amazing video showing the progress that we've made. My grandfather's generation saw probably the most change over his lifetime than we'll ever see in such a short period of time. Thank you for making this

In summer 1945 my dad hand milked 12 cows twice a day for a woman who's husband up and left her. She had 15 cows with 3 dry and calves and heifers. He put up the hay and corn in fall and went to army in October..she sold the farm

Most people have no idea how much happier cows are that live in well designed freestall barns. No different than humans wanting to be comfortable in their habitat

I serviced Harvestore structures for 15 years, then the govmt buy out came along, customers got in the buy out or retired service work didn't pay the bills anymore.

Baby cows in human terms would be baby women, now can you see how stupid you sound?

I was horrified some years ago when I got talking to a dairy farmer from Kansas. He ran a large dairy farm where the cows were milked 4 times a day. They never grazed on pasture, the system was zero grazing where the grass was mowed and fed to the cows in the stalls. Horrible. There is nothing like the joy of cattle being turned onto grass after a winter in the barn. They are meant to be on grass some of the time anyway. Milk produced from cows kept in a barn 24/7 all year round cannot be as healthy as milk produced from cows who go out to graze on grass.
You want to know how to treat your animals better? Let them graze outside for some of the year.

Milked 4 times a day? More than likely milked by a robot.

Too hot in the summer. The cows are much more comfortable in those freestall barns. The Holstein breed is a terrible breed for grazing. Best to bring their food to them.

I don't care what anyone says. Cows are meant to be on pasture, weather permitting. Not in a building on concrete 24/7. The guy speaking at the 5:00 minute mark doesn't know what he's talking about. In the 50's and 60's cows were not tied up all of the time. They were on pasture.

Rich your so right!! Even in a stall barn they could eat and drink all day! Happy cows go to pasture every day!! The farmer was a farmer back then now the new farmer is just the manager of the facility, they don't go do the milking or feeding! The countryside would be a better place if their were more of the old 60 to 120 cow dairy's left!!
