A someone who used built-in speakers everywhere until about a month ago, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to get some good speakers. Even a small 2.0 setup will sound extraordinarily better.
100%! And size matters as well! Every time I went bigger the sound quality and depth improved significantly. I'm now settled on 8" studio monitors and a 10" sub for my PC setup and it sounds fantastic (Presonus Eris E8 and Temblor T10). If those are good-enough for pros to mix music on - they're good enough for me to listen to stuff on :)
I work with surround sound for movies, finally an accurate video! The best part about 5.1 and up is the center channel. Having dialogue, foley, and effects all go into one channel frees up space in the rest for atmospheres and music and also helps set a solid backbone for the entire movie or episode. And in a bigger cinema where the left and right speakers are 20 meters apart, the sound is clearly and concisely coming from the center of the picture. Oh, and Dolby Atmos supports up to 128 full range channels and all mixes are compatible across different Atmos suites of all sizes!
Only technically 1 minor error in the video is the reference to 5.1 being 5 channels plus an LFE. Its not, its 6 channels, but thats semantics. Also, its technically not 128 “channels” in Atmos, although they are individual audio streams, they arent classified as channels per se, in the sense that its not up to 128 speaker channels, but rather audio channels

Depends on the neighbours really. My old neighbours didn't even question me when I used to have the surround sound setup blasting desk vibrating bass (no pun intended). But my new neighbour will complain when i can only just clearly hear everything being said. Surround sound got so much bass that even on lowest setting for me anyway deeper voices can be heard from below. I'm in an upper flat of two flats, kinda like a house segregated from ground floor to 1st floor. Had to resort to earphones which I can at least make really loud without them ever hearing the sound. I can only assume what the old neighbours did to tone down the sound coming from my surround sound because I almost always use my computer at night, well past midnight starting from about 8pm or even earlier.
At least my old Creative 5.1 has a separate volume for the subwoofer and having sound all around me just 3 feet away (I have the desk 90° out from a wall in a corner and the rear speakers on the wall behind me. This means I don't have to much volume up and the disturbance for others in my house might be less than if I only had two larger speakers. And no matter how a headset claims to be multichannel, it isn't the same.
No.. Having a sound system does not mean you need to crank it to the max🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ If you have a soundbar it already makes just as much noise as a full surround setup ar the same volume...
@@Bratfalken All 5.1 systems I have seen habe a seperate level control for the sub/woofer. (It does not go subsonic so in your case it's really a "active bass box")
Built in speakers are generally good enough, especially if your just in a small apartment. That being said I'm getting a surround system for my house which I'm super excited about
During the quarantine, since my parents went no work and just spent time on Netflix, I bought a JBL Bar 5.1 so they can enjoy more on watching. But yet, they usually use the TV speakers and the soundbar only get used when I'm also watching. (screams internally)
As a student, you probably won't get practical use from your education and will be spending all your money with the useless debt you achieved. Congratulation!!!

Don't forget about one of the most important aspects of a surround sound experience... the physical watching/listening area. Most home designs don't give a damn about your movie watching experience. The placement of a proper TV and surround sound setup is usually less than an afterthought. Take Linus' home TV setup for example. His TV location, relative to all of the walls around it, is far from ideal. It's actually borderline criminal. Choosing where to place your home theater is just as important as choosing which components to include in it.
The nice part is that speakers just keeps on giving, I got my 5.1 system with a computer back in 2003, they work excellent on my x570 board with buildt in surround sound! :)
I miss having surround sound. I bought one that fried while under extended warranty, but had also become a discontinued model. I received store credit for it, but a new system was more than I wanted to spend at the time. Couple years later, and my 46" LCD TV started flickering. I used the store credit to buy a 55" LED. A year later I bought a 2.1 sound bar for a hundred bucks. It is sooo much better than the TV's speakers.
I'd really like to see comparisons done between very good options from both sides. ..and comparative price points at the mid and low entry also. Bonus points if they involve more of the crew to get more opinions on thoughts. :)
@@herranton I think people tend to buy soundbars for the convenience and overall price as compared to having a full surround system with a decent AVR, and that doesn’t even get into the option of going with separates. I agree with you that having multiple speakers is always going to be better sounding than a sound bar. I have a 2.1 setup and I love it.

You can get some nice bookshelves that go to 40-50Hz and keep budget under 250-300 on the cheap. ..and I'd be very surprised if there's a soundbar on the market that could compete with most seperate speakers 1/2 their price. Also.. just cause I'm a speaker hobbyist myself.. $5K? Dang man. What is your system? I built 1099s for LCR, and 2 VBSS (custom 18" pro woofer subs), and probably only have $2.5k in my system total. Must have some fancy stuff to hit near 5k. :D
The first 5.1 system i had was in 1998. I connect it to a dvd player and watched "the matrix" on it. It was awesome to hear the dolby digital 5.1 sourrund sound :D. PLayed the JBL Speakers and Yamaha YST-SW 160 Subwoofer :D
My TV is from 2008, back when they actually built real speakers into the panel. Now, they've figured out they can sell you a soundbar as well if they just make those speakers really bad.
I bought the Z-5500 new a few years ago to experience the DVD Audio discs of my favourite 70’s music in surround sound. I didn’t pay much for the sound system and my plan was to see if I liked 5.1 music then I’d buy a better unit later. Thing is my friend is also into 5.1 and he has a German made 5.1 system called Adam and he paid $2600. Soon as he heard my set up he was pissed off because we could point out any sound difference between both units, he like my set up so much he is now looking around the country looking for a new unit.. long story short, never sell your unit it’s now worth three times what you paid for it and the music quality is as good as a expensive unit…..

The best thing I did was buying a soundbar. I prefer the sound from my soundbar compared to the TV inbuilt speakers, so I use my soundbar all the time. When I purchased mine years ago, there were also soundbars that you could buy additional speakers for and connect them together for true 5.1 surround sound. If I ever have to buy another soundbar or an additional one, that might be something I'd look at in the future.
You can make it as expensife as you want (not for everyone but) i have builded my own 5.0 speaker system with second hand "broken" speakers. I have made new cabinets and used new woofers, second hand amplefier (that was 2000 euro's new, got it for 100 euro's) i dosent have things like HDMI but i use my dedicated soundcard for surround sound and the build in dac via USB for stereo/music. added a second hand good subwoofer later on and i spent arround 700/750 euro's in total. I bet it would sound better then the Klipsch surround system that LMG has. (i know it still a lot of money)

Got a 7.1.4 mastering room at work, and with our consoles 3D panner you can automate a mono signal "node" spinning around you head moving up and down, its awesome
4:20 "Screaming internally" - That's how I feel with all of the ridiculous and popular "soundbars" and especially folks who just use the TV speakers for a "cleaner" look with abysmal sound either way. Just like "more cowbell", you need "real, and more speakers" to make anything sound decent.
I ditched surround sound for a good stereo setup several years ago. I've never looked back. The times that my old and expensive surround setup made a difference I actually appreciated was few and far between.
My old and expensive surround setup is actually doing a difference even today. Saying though, you was probably doing something wrong like you never needed it or you didn't enjoyed it's full potential due to lack of good source. Just guessing.
@@robertrudik3022 It could have been as simple as having the wires to the speakers set with differing polarity. The cones on one speaker going out while the other is going in. More speakers = more chances of botching the polarity.

In both movies and tv series stuff is going on ON SCREEN, i.e. in front of you. And so the sound will come from the speakers in front of you as well. A stereo setup is less easier. Less wiring. Less expensive. And I haven't really been missing the 5.1 setup at all.

Its all coming from the front something is not set up correctly. TV, yes for most. For older movies and that means decades old, mostly. But for movies made with surround sound in mind it should not all come from the front. Perhaps your ears don't do spatial placement well, in which case stereo would be as good as it gets, for you. The rest is correct of course. But it really will not all come from the front with many films and even some old stereo concerts as they can often work with Dolby. Oh and stereo should work just fine with with the wiring polarity wrong. The speakers have to in phase for multichannel.
@@ethelredhardrede1838 It's not that there's no sound from the other speakers. It's that there are, in my experience, maybe due to the types of films and series I watch, there's not a lot of important sounds from the rest of the speakers. Maybe in some scenes an airplane will fly past the camera, and I'll hear it the sound of it transition from the front to back. (For example.) But there's not a whole lot of scenes where that is useful, or makes a whole lot of difference to the experience.
Usually two or more subwoofers is not for more sound but for more stable sound. As low frequencies bounce around the room it creates 'nodes' or areas of high amplitude and areas of low amplitude due to sound waves interfering with themselves. This means a different listening experience depending on where people are sitting. Two or more subwoofers can help flatten these fluctuations of volume around the room.
5.1 has been around for over 20 years. It was really first achieved with DVD players and the discrete RCA outputs for a theater receiver that had those exact inputs for 5.1, which would be 6 individual cables. Optical and digital coax came out later so there was a 1 cable solution so long as your receiver could decode the signal into 5.1. Eventually this all turned into HDMI where audio and video connect on devices and decoding is standard. Sound bars are like compact receivers with speakers or kind of like jamming a cable into an old boombox and sound comes out of whatever speakers are there. Lol.
Fun fact, the .1 in 5.1 doesn't mean the separate subwoofer per se. It's called .1 because there wasn't enough bandwidth on surround tapes left for a full sixth speaker. They made a channel that only goes up to around 2000 Hz (a tenth of a normal signal), so the .1 actually originally stands for 10% of a normal speaker bandwidth
My home theatre is cheaper than most soundbars and sounds a hell of a lot better than any cinema I have ever been to. (It is very home made though, and I do use things like equaliser apo and the built in analog outs (7.1).
Warning: if you catch the Home Theater bug...you’re screwed and it’ll never let go as the quest for epic sound, a/v receivers and speaker setups will never end. 10/10 would recommend catching this bug.
20+ years now and lot's of 5.1 ---> systems. Took about 15 years before I found out how important is room acoustics. It's insane how much you can improve an old system just by making acoustic changes to the room. I used to like my setup but now I love the sound so much. No need for upgrades unless new better AV standards come in a couple of years.

I have a discrete 5.1 surround setup on my PC going through "real" (not desktop) speakers and amps. However, I have a hard time using headphones, because going from real 5.1 to headphones (even with surround virtualization) is really a shock. Even with an inexpensive Logitech 5.1 speaker system, discrete surround is REALLY nice! :)
I'm rocking a 5.2 system these days, listening to surround-mixed albums on SACD. My front channels are superb in stereo as well because they matter the most!
This title is fully understated since you're explaining way more than just 5.1. They brought up height channels and Pro Logic, however videos like these often omit the calculated numbers for things like subwoofers use 1/3 bitrate of 1 channel, this why I divide 448 or 640 kbps by a rational 5.3 or 7.3 for the channel bitrate, then divide that number by 3 for the subwoofer bitrate, or companies inventing good/bad audio tricks for their own branded soundbars, among other things. This video covers a wide range of aspects and we can take their word for everything. I guess I'm critiquing this whole thing a bit. I may not be an audiophile but I can distinguish many types of sound.
When a 5.1 mix is done, the LFE channel is full range. It's only on encoding to a format like Dolby Digital that the bandwidth of the LFE is reduced. For Dolby Digital specifically the LFE goes from a sample rate of 48,000Hz to 240Hz.
@@AlteraSound Wait so there can be a full bitrate LFE channel? If that's possible that would recalculate the other speakers to let's say 640kbps divided by 6 instead of Dolby and DTS's 5.33, that would be 128kbps for every channel including LFE. Is that right?

@@AlteraSound Oh... Well that's rather interesting. Actually hearing that now makes me question the difference between DTS-HD and DTS. Dolby 640kbps vs TrueHD I understand but I have Legend of Korra blu rays with varying 2-2.5mbps lossless DTS-HD 5.1 tracks, if what you say is true, I'm wondering just how much the other 5 channels are even losing just because of that LFE difference for plain DTS. Is there any point in DTS being lossy at this point? If this is the case then DTS vs DTS-HD shouldn't even be comparable, but hey people compare TrueHD vs DTS-HD so who's to say, they all sound the same to me except Dolby 640 I can barely discern from DTS.
Could have also specified that if multi-subwoofwr setups often times the subs are tasked ro do different things. One for example might handle low frequency sound while the other is explicitly only for rumbling. Or you may even have a vibrating motor in your couch which is also treated as a "subwoofer"
Looking to some day upgrade my 5.1 to 7.2.6. Recently my old receiver died which got me to buy a new one. I switched over to my TV speakers for a little bit until I could afford the replacement. OMG! I was so happy to move back. Almost forgot how amazing a movie can sound. Nothing like surround sound.
Idea for the next topix: Room acoustics and how to improve it. Especially at the bass frequency range. I know so many people spending lots of money for audio components, but they do not notice, that the sound is still far away from being great because of bad room acoustics or missing knowledge. Too much bass, echoes and absent frequencies. There are some possibilities to counteract the bad sound. Correct positioning of the speakers, sound absorbers, sound diffusers, furniture, eletronic sound correction, ... I would appreciate it very much if you could make a short video explanation for that :) Best wishes from germany!
The _"soundbar surround"_ could be a real thing but it's expensive to manufacture and requires as much, if not more, user set-up. The setup uses beam formed ultrasound to almost create a new speaker on the surface it's pointed at. It pretty much doesn't matter what it is pointed at as the sound has such high energy that the object vibrates to create sound at a frequency we can hear. This means that there's no distortion and no sound bleed directly from the speaker. If the speaker is not beam formed it can even vibrate the listeners skull and create an ambiguous source useful for underwater rumble, explosions etc.. The problem comes from interference, the system needs to have the beam forming arrays far enough apart so that they don't interfere with the forming of said beam and the fase synchronised with regard to where the beam will hit so the waves don't cancel each other out. That said, how cool wouldn't it be to have this built in to a laptop that could self calibrate? And since you can technically beam form the return sound as well; you could be in a public place with no headphones, getting an Atmos experience and no one around you would hear a thing!
Great video guys. That RP-600M is really beautiful, awesome speaker. Pro tip, reason why speakers like Klipsch, JBL, Electro Voice, QSC etc. have such fantastic clarity is due to their high efficiency horn/waveguide technology. Virtually all big commercial theaters use massive 2/3 or 4 way horns behind the screen which is why dialog is so clear and easy to hear. Horns have superior efficiency and require less power than conventional dynamic "box" speakers. They have far less distortion, superior dynamics and can play louder without any real hint of strain. I have owned just about every type of speaker design/tweeter design from some of the highest end makes and horn loaded or full horn designs just take the cake, especially for HT/Movie watching but also great with music too. Another benefit is since consumer AVRs don't have the greatest amplification built in you literally get more sound for your dollar vs poor efficiency conventional designs that use soft dome tweeters and the like. Concentric or Uni driver designs are also pretty efficient and have many of the benefits horns have; makes like KEF and Tannoy are known for those and they are nice alternatives for those whose ears don't "agree" with the classic cinema/theater big dynamics horn type sound. One of the best conventional dynamic speakers out there for my money is FOCAL with their beryllium tweeters which have horn like clarity and big dynamics but since they aren't very efficient (like B&Ws) they need proper big amplification to make them sing. In music studios you tend to see more conventional designs used like ATC/Genelec/Focal etc. and more JBL horn stuff for movie/film post facilities. For legit HT Klipsch is really hard to beat and their heritage line is incredible too. Keep up the great work guys.
Just 5.1? I have a full 7.2.4 setup. Gotta love true DolbyAtmos. And I'm not using a stupid fake sound bar. Physical speakers in each location, and my ceiling speakers are *actually* on the ceiling.
Oh boy how much do I love when my friends start to argue with me that their Gaming Dolby Atmos RGB 7.1 headphones or cell phone with Dolby Atmos support can simulate surround sound just as good if not better then mine 7.1 home theater in the living room with Pioneer Elite receiver.
I think most ceiling mounted speakers are built to be surround sound, since I've seen them in plenty of houses that predate Atmos. But depending on where you put your couch, they can still be great for Atmos.
You should check out 5.1 and even Atmos mixed music it is really a step above movies in surround. Tidal has a lot of good atmos mixed tracks that are worth taking a listen to.
Tbh when the screen is a speaker I personally don’t think anything can beat that for pinpoint onscreen immersion. I just wish I could find a way to use it in tandem with my speaker setup.
I've seen people set up their subwoofers to only play the LFE channel information off of movies and wonder why the bass is missing. This is usually a problem with older receivers that weren't really clearly indicating what was happening in their setup options. Newer receivers/processors are better at showing how bass frequencies are steered (I.e. the crossover frequencies). If you have a sub set up to only play LFE, it will ONLY play what is encoded on the LFE track of the media you're playing. So, you'll get great explosions and the rumble of massive spaceships, but the soundtrack will sound weak, for example.
Actually recently upgraded from 5.1 to 7.1 and man what a world of difference this is, can't wait to upgrade to 9.2 to bad even 7.1 isn't widely supported yet...
I'm glad I put together a 5.1 channel setup . A pair of 20 y.o. Bohlender Graebener (similar to Martin Login but with planar magnetic tweeters instead of folding motion ones) fronts with the matching center, Infinity rears, and Klipsch sub. It's best to get things used cause I could not afford to get of it for msrp. I can't believe people settle for tv speakers, soundbars, even the speakerphone on there iphones. Theres only one way to get real sound!

Don't forget about one of the most important aspects of a surround sound experience... the physical watching/listening area. Most home designs don't give a damn about your movie watching experience. The placement of a proper TV and surround sound setup is usually less than an afterthought. Take Linus' home TV setup for example. His TV location, relative to all of the walls around it, is far from ideal. It's actually borderline criminal. Choosing where to place your home theater is just as important as choosing which components to include in it.
The nice part is that speakers just keeps on giving, I got my 5.1 system with a computer back in 2003, they work excellent on my x570 board with buildt in surround sound! :)

I miss having surround sound. I bought one that fried while under extended warranty, but had also become a discontinued model. I received store credit for it, but a new system was more than I wanted to spend at the time. Couple years later, and my 46" LCD TV started flickering. I used the store credit to buy a 55" LED. A year later I bought a 2.1 sound bar for a hundred bucks. It is sooo much better than the TV's speakers.

@@herranton I think people tend to buy soundbars for the convenience and overall price as compared to having a full surround system with a decent AVR, and that doesn’t even get into the option of going with separates. I agree with you that having multiple speakers is always going to be better sounding than a sound bar. I have a 2.1 setup and I love it.
@@herranton Totally agree. You can get some nice bookshelves that go to 40-50Hz and keep budget under 250-300 on the cheap. ..and I'd be very surprised if there's a soundbar on the market that could compete with most seperate speakers 1/2 their price.

The first 5.1 system i had was in 1998. I connect it to a dvd player and watched "the matrix" on it. It was awesome to hear the dolby digital 5.1 sourrund sound :D. PLayed the JBL Speakers and Yamaha YST-SW 160 Subwoofer :D

My mom had a 32 inch CRT with a 8 inch woofer in it. You could hook up 2 surround speakers and you had an 5.1 system

Now, they've figured out they can sell you a soundbar as well if they just make those speakers really bad.

I bought the Z-5500 new a few years ago to experience the DVD Audio discs of my favourite 70’s music in surround sound. I didn’t pay much for the sound system and my plan was to see if I liked 5.1 music then I’d buy a better unit later. Thing is my friend is also into 5.1 and he has a German made 5.1 system called Adam and he paid $2600. Soon as he heard my set up he was pissed off because we could point out any sound difference between both units, he like my set up so much he is now looking around the country looking for a new unit.. long story short, never sell your unit it’s now worth three times what you paid for it and the music quality is as good as a expensive unit…..

I got a logitech Z600 even that outputs amazing sound and it looks great too for 2.0 speakers, sadly Logitech discontinued them as well
The best thing I did was buying a soundbar. I prefer the sound from my soundbar compared to the TV inbuilt speakers, so I use my soundbar all the time. When I purchased mine years ago, there were also soundbars that you could buy additional speakers for and connect them together for true 5.1 surround sound. If I ever have to buy another soundbar or an additional one, that might be something I'd look at in the future.

5.1 is more about time than money. Assuming you can get a receiver and speakers, designing your room to sound good is actually the important part.
You can make it as expensife as you want (not for everyone but) i have builded my own 5.0 speaker system with second hand "broken" speakers. I have made new cabinets and used new woofers, second hand amplefier (that was 2000 euro's new, got it for 100 euro's) i dosent have things like HDMI but i use my dedicated soundcard for surround sound and the build in dac via USB for stereo/music. added a second hand good subwoofer later on and i spent arround 700/750 euro's in total. I bet it would sound better then the Klipsch surround system that LMG has. (i know it still a lot of money)

4:20 "Screaming internally" - That's how I feel with all of the ridiculous and popular "soundbars" and especially folks who just use the TV speakers for a "cleaner" look with abysmal sound either way. Just like "more cowbell", you need "real, and more speakers" to make anything sound decent.
I ditched surround sound for a good stereo setup several years ago. I've never looked back. The times that my old and expensive surround setup made a difference I actually appreciated was few and far between.
My old and expensive surround setup is actually doing a difference even today. Saying though, you was probably doing something wrong like you never needed it or you didn't enjoyed it's full potential due to lack of good source. Just guessing.

It could have been as simple as having the wires to the speakers set with differing polarity. The cones on one speaker going out while the other is going in. More speakers = more chances of botching the polarity.

In both movies and tv series stuff is going on ON SCREEN, i.e. in front of you. And so the sound will come from the speakers in front of you as well.
A stereo setup is less easier. Less wiring. Less expensive. And I haven't really been missing the 5.1 setup at all.

Not in 5.1 or even in some concerts. Its all coming from the front something is not set up correctly. TV, yes for most. For older movies and that means decades old, mostly. But for movies made with surround sound in mind it should not all come from the front. Perhaps your ears don't do spatial placement well, in which case stereo would be as good as it gets, for you.
The rest is correct of course. But it really will not all come from the front with many films and even some old stereo concerts as they can often work with Dolby. Oh and stereo should work just fine with with the wiring polarity wrong. The speakers have to in phase for multichannel.

It's that there are, in my experience, maybe due to the types of films and series I watch, there's not a lot of important sounds from the rest of the speakers. Maybe in some scenes an airplane will fly past the camera, and I'll hear it the sound of it transition from the front to back. (For example.) But there's not a whole lot of scenes where that is useful, or makes a whole lot of difference to the experience.

Usually two or more subwoofers is not for more sound but for more stable sound. As low frequencies bounce around the room it creates 'nodes' or areas of high amplitude and areas of low amplitude due to sound waves interfering with themselves. This means a different listening experience depending on where people are sitting. Two or more subwoofers can help flatten these fluctuations of volume around the room.

5.1 has been around for over 20 years. It was really first achieved with DVD players and the discrete RCA outputs for a theater receiver that had those exact inputs for 5.1, which would be 6 individual cables. Optical and digital coax came out later so there was a 1 cable solution so long as your receiver could decode the signal into 5.1. Eventually this all turned into HDMI where audio and video connect on devices and decoding is standard. Sound bars are like compact receivers with speakers or kind of like jamming a cable into an old boombox and sound comes out of whatever speakers are there. Lol.
Fun fact, the .1 in 5.1 doesn't mean the separate subwoofer per se. It's called .1 because there wasn't enough bandwidth on surround tapes left for a full sixth speaker. They made a channel that only goes up to around 2000 Hz (a tenth of a normal signal), so the .1 actually originally stands for 10% of a normal speaker bandwidth
My home theatre is cheaper than most soundbars and sounds a hell of a lot better than any cinema I have ever been to. (It is very home made though, and I do use things like equaliser apo and the built in analog outs (7.1).

20+ years now and lot's of 5.1 ---> systems. Took about 15 years before I found out how important is room acoustics. It's insane how much you can improve an old system just by making acoustic changes to the room. I used to like my setup but now I love the sound so much. No need for upgrades unless new better AV standards come in a couple of years.

I have a discrete 5.1 surround setup on my PC going through "real" (not desktop) speakers and amps. However, I have a hard time using headphones, because going from real 5.1 to headphones (even with surround virtualization) is really a shock. Even with an inexpensive Logitech 5.1 speaker system, discrete surround is REALLY nice! :)

I'm rocking a 5.2 system these days, listening to surround-mixed albums on SACD. My front channels are superb in stereo as well because they matter the most!
This title is fully understated since you're explaining way more than just 5.1. They brought up height channels and Pro Logic, however videos like these often omit the calculated numbers for things like subwoofers use 1/3 bitrate of 1 channel, this why I divide 448 or 640 kbps by a rational 5.3 or 7.3 for the channel bitrate, then divide that number by 3 for the subwoofer bitrate, or companies inventing good/bad audio tricks for their own branded soundbars, among other things. This video covers a wide range of aspects and we can take their word for everything. I guess I'm critiquing this whole thing a bit. I may not be an audiophile but I can distinguish many types of sound.
When a 5.1 mix is done, the LFE channel is full range. It's only on encoding to a format like Dolby Digital that the bandwidth of the LFE is reduced. For Dolby Digital specifically the LFE goes from a sample rate of 48,000Hz to 240Hz.
@@AlteraSound Wait so there can be a full bitrate LFE channel? If that's possible that would recalculate the other speakers to let's say 640kbps divided by 6 instead of Dolby and DTS's 5.33, that would be 128kbps for every channel including LFE. Is that right?
@@HedgehogY2K The LFE channel is only full bandwidth for uncompressed distribution, so typically about 706kbps per channel. It's only when the surround sound audio is compressed that the LFE is bandwidth-limited.

Dolby 640kbps vs TrueHD I understand but I have Legend of Korra blu rays with varying 2-2.5mbps lossless DTS-HD 5.1 tracks, if what you say is true, I'm wondering just how much the other 5 channels are even losing just because of that LFE difference for plain DTS. Is there any point in DTS being lossy at this point? If this is the case then DTS vs DTS-HD shouldn't even be comparable, but hey people compare TrueHD vs DTS-HD so who's to say, they all sound the same to me except Dolby 640 I can barely discern from DTS.

I use simple desktop speakers with sub and activate the virtual surround built into the TV. Works great.
I don't have the time to sit and watch movies enough to justify anything more than 2.1 which is what I currently have.
Could have also specified that if multi-subwoofwr setups often times the subs are tasked ro do different things. One for example might handle low frequency sound while the other is explicitly only for rumbling. Or you may even have a vibrating motor in your couch which is also treated as a "subwoofer"
Audio equipment's too expensive. I'll just stick with the speakers built into my TV.

There are some possibilities to counteract the bad sound.
Correct positioning of the speakers, sound absorbers, sound diffusers, furniture, eletronic sound correction, ...

The _"soundbar surround"_ could be a real thing but it's expensive to manufacture and requires as much, if not more, user set-up.
The setup uses beam formed ultrasound to almost create a new speaker on the surface it's pointed at. It pretty much doesn't matter what it is pointed at as the sound has such high energy that the object vibrates to create sound at a frequency we can hear. This means that there's no distortion and no sound bleed directly from the speaker. If the speaker is not beam formed it can even vibrate the listeners skull and create an ambiguous source useful for underwater rumble, explosions etc.. The problem comes from interference, the system needs to have the beam forming arrays far enough apart so that they don't interfere with the forming of said beam and the fase synchronised with regard to where the beam will hit so the waves don't cancel each other out.
That said, how cool wouldn't it be to have this built in to a laptop that could self calibrate? And since you can technically beam form the return sound as well; you could be in a public place with no headphones, getting an Atmos experience and no one around you would hear a thing!
Great video guys. That RP-600M is really beautiful, awesome speaker. Pro tip, reason why speakers like Klipsch, JBL, Electro Voice, QSC etc. have such fantastic clarity is due to their high efficiency horn/waveguide technology. Virtually all big commercial theaters use massive 2/3 or 4 way horns behind the screen which is why dialog is so clear and easy to hear. Horns have superior efficiency and require less power than conventional dynamic "box" speakers. They have far less distortion, superior dynamics and can play louder without any real hint of strain. I have owned just about every type of speaker design/tweeter design from some of the highest end makes and horn loaded or full horn designs just take the cake, especially for HT/Movie watching but also great with music too. Another benefit is since consumer AVRs don't have the greatest amplification built in you literally get more sound for your dollar vs poor efficiency conventional designs that use soft dome tweeters and the like. Concentric or Uni driver designs are also pretty efficient and have many of the benefits horns have; makes like KEF and Tannoy are known for those and they are nice alternatives for those whose ears don't "agree" with the classic cinema/theater big dynamics horn type sound. One of the best conventional dynamic speakers out there for my money is FOCAL with their beryllium tweeters which have horn like clarity and big dynamics but since they aren't very efficient (like B&Ws) they need proper big amplification to make them sing. In music studios you tend to see more conventional designs used like ATC/Genelec/Focal etc. and more JBL horn stuff for movie/film post facilities. For legit HT Klipsch is really hard to beat and their heritage line is incredible too. Keep up the great work guys.

Oh boy how much do I love when my friends start to argue with me that their Gaming Dolby Atmos RGB 7.1 headphones or cell phone with Dolby Atmos support can simulate surround sound just as good if not better then mine 7.1 home theater in the living room with Pioneer Elite receiver.

I think most ceiling mounted speakers are built to be surround sound, since I've seen them in plenty of houses that predate Atmos. But depending on where you put your couch, they can still be great for Atmos.
You should check out 5.1 and even Atmos mixed music it is really a step above movies in surround. Tidal has a lot of good atmos mixed tracks that are worth taking a listen to.
Tbh when the screen is a speaker I personally don’t think anything can beat that for pinpoint onscreen immersion. I just wish I could find a way to use it in tandem with my speaker setup.
I've seen people set up their subwoofers to only play the LFE channel information off of movies and wonder why the bass is missing. This is usually a problem with older receivers that weren't really clearly indicating what was happening in their setup options. Newer receivers/processors are better at showing how bass frequencies are steered (I.e. the crossover frequencies). If you have a sub set up to only play LFE, it will ONLY play what is encoded on the LFE track of the media you're playing. So, you'll get great explosions and the rumble of massive spaceships, but the soundtrack will sound weak, for example.

I'm glad I put together a 5.1 channel setup . A pair of 20 y.o. Bohlender Graebener (similar to Martin Login but with planar magnetic tweeters instead of folding motion ones) fronts with the matching center, Infinity rears, and Klipsch sub. It's best to get things used cause I could not afford to get of it for msrp. I can't believe people settle for tv speakers, soundbars, even the speakerphone on there iphones. Theres only one way to get real sound!
