I love how blue lock doesn't throw away common sports tropes like friendship and teamwork, but just emphasizes that if you don't have an ego, individual talent, and individual goals, it doesn't matter how much teamwork you put together. Yes, isagi and his team do work together, but they work for themselves toward a common goal, which helps them push themselves farther.

THIS!!! is why I feel people miss out on this. they don't fully get how great teamwork is but if you aren't winning they are deluding themselves thinking 'least I have my friends with me'. Like bro yall wanted to win right?

Yeah, I know what you mean. Even though Isagi's control of the field and predictions are absolutely insane, that's the only weapons he have at his disposal so far, and it's not even striker exclusive things. Meanwhile, we have monsters like Rin, Nagi and Bachira, who will completely overwhelm Isagi in a pure 1v1 scenario. So his ascend to the best striker in the world is a very long road.
Isagi might as well take a note from Sae and become the best midfielder, he has a lot of potential in that role.

I basically got tired of power of friendship and teamwork bullshit and I just wanted the characters to be arrogant egotistical bastards and I ate up 194 chapters of it and still want more. It's a fresh take of sports anime/manga, it's a literal battlefield where if you hesitate for a split second, someone will "devour" you, making you lose your worth and if they do devour you, you either stop there or do the same thing to them. The series is the definition of the saying "Dog eat dog". Everyone is an enemy, doesn't matter if you're team or a close friends, because end of the day, there can only be one best striker. No fucking "We will go to the nationals!", nah it's damn "I'm going to the world cup and show the whole planet who's number 1".

Another aspect that makes blue lock so refreshing is it is an absolutely antithetical piece of work to the massive body of sports manga/anime. We often forget that manga and anime all come from the same country and culture, so we, as readers, can often forget how intricately the two are tied together. Bluelock's birth comes from ego recognizing the limits of the Japanese mentality in creating a singular transcendent striker. You can almost feel the subconscious friction and the discomfort while watching it because it goes against the anime culture we've naturally adopted. It's a great exercise in how incorporating different perspectives can create unexpected growth, and how fear of change can create stagnation towards certain goals.

Strikers do need to be a certain amount selfish, have an ego etc. Had a strikers on my travel team growing up who was that way. He'd lose the ball taking on defenders he didn't need to, take low percentage shots himself instead of passing, but he would also always find the back of the net when we really needed it.

If you take only the text, then the message of the story is that being a POS and stepping all over your frineds is the only way to win. If you read the subtext however, you realize that it's a story about personal ambition and the importance of self esteem and defining who you are, while forming relationships with those around you, who're all on the same path of personal improvement

the more I read Blue Lock, the more I realised that it is legit the same as other sports manga/anime, just in another perspective. The concept of having the biggest ego that is backup by your talent (every antagonist team leaders ever), devour your teammates and your opponents then exceeds your best (simply put, to want to win, to be challenged, like Sakuragi vs Kurawa, Hinata and Kageyama), the whole match will reconstruct around the current "main actor/king" of the match (the monster duo (Haikyuu) always make enemy change strategies and Karasuno themselves change in order to block other teams' ace), the change of "main actor/king", be devoured and then devour others (the monster duo shines -> be blocked (or see other players are getting the spotlight -> exceeds their limits and fight 101%), you cannot do what your body not allow, only change your way of thinking (that's why strategies exists) or change your way of doing (Hinata learn the way other players move and receive), the "flow" (Kuroko's "zone"), chemical reactions (or teamwork) are created between 2 people showing their best, and finally the lost teams/players are lost because they can't "improvise" or "adapt" or simply because of "luck" (which are also concepts explained in Blue Lock)
I find Blue Locks so fucking interesting and fascinating as it look into the aspect of what really make a win. They explained the abstract of teamwork, exceeds your potential, what is in the player who can change the match, luck, adapt to the enemy, etc. in the form of real, logical, physical words, plays, thoughts.

For one, these people will leave you behind if you aren’t good enough( isagi and random not barou guy) (reo and nagi). Devouring is a selfish act of taking others abilities so you can beat them. Flow is in pretty much every sports anime.

blue is absolutely one of my favorite sports anime’s cause even tho it has their ‘power up’s’ and stuff making it a bit unrealistic. as an ex soccer player i can confirm that it really gets in their about the dog eats dog world that i haven’t seen many other sports anime get too much into (you’ll see more examples of this in later episodes)
in top tier soccer clubs (like i was in) you have to be an absolute beast, eat, sleep breathe soccer. and if you don’t ah e that then you’re screwed. and i’m a training facility i was in they had two rules i apply in daily my life.
    1. if you have the ball and don’t fully intend to score 101 % then pass it to someone who will
    2. if you can do it yourself, then do it. don’t give up or pass the ball until you absolutely can not.
even tho that’s not how pros play, (focusing on passing and trick plays) we were there to focus on ourselves, to better ourselves for our separate teams, not become a big team. my god was it a blood bath. absolutely awful

Blue Lock tackle the issue of being a 'star player' . It's that Kobe mentality shit where anime like Haikyuu tackles how important team work and friendship is in your life Blue Lock tackles something of the opposite. People who sees BL as an only shounen type power up hype show don't understand how important individuality is. Think of Kobe as a play maker that is what is all about. Play makers often be considered assholes: Jordan, Kobe, Lebron, Messi, and many other play makers because in the end of the day, they play to WIN. These people MAKE their team who they are by showing themselves as their most valuable asset and thats that, therefore forcing the others to push their limits or else they got canned or worse forever known by fans as the weak link. It's toxic for regular corporate work, it's annoying for regular people, but for people who HAVE BEEN a professional athlete the message is more than relatable for us

I love blue lock because its different from other sports anime. It's the complete opposite of haikyuu and kuroko no basket. When you win a game in most sports anime, you shake the opponents hand and they hope for you to win too and everything is wholesome. When you win a game in blue lock, they crush people's dreams and feel good while doing so, growing their ego. The opponents have a hatred for them, and in blue lock, you have to survive and become the top. You eventually have to eliminate your own friends, and you friends try to eliminate you.
This concept is unique, and this is now one of my favorite sports anime.

Just from hearing the beginning of ur vid I feel like what blue lock is targeting is being the absolute best at what you do which imo has a lot more nuanced and deeper things involved (for example restructuring how we think about ego). A quote I heard from a sports scientist that works with lots of athletes went something like "I can make anyone an Olympic level athlete but making them win multiple gold medals ? now that's the trick". I like blue lock because the only real difference that athletes can have is mindset we see it in kobe bryant for example not especially physically gifted when compared to players like shaq lets say yet he still excelled, same with steph. What makes bluelock interesting is how its targeting an aspect of sports in anime which is overlooked and thats the mindset + harsh realities of what it takes to be the best (Ao ashi also covers this idea pretty nicely as well while also having the more traditional sports anime vibe so maybe you will prefer that, would recommend the manga over the anime though). Its interesting you thought you wouldnt like it because its "different" because for me that was exactly why I thought I would like it XD not to say that I dont enjoy the traditional sports anime approach but the opening explanations Ego gave made so much sense that I just new this would be a hit.

"i was wrong blue lock is phenomenal"
    Me: well duh
Blue lock is amazing for many reasons, but the biggest reason is that you can tell a lot of thought was put into this "crazy" concept for team sports. So much so that it starts to stop sounding crazy. There is some truth to how ego plays a role in any sport where a player scores especially high. Blue lock gets into the mind of someone with the mentality first and foremost "ITS ME. I'm scoring this one". Then they pit 100s of people exactly like that against each other in a battle royale, Except you kill the others by scoring goals. It sharpens the ego of each one there by pitting them against each other, because it forces you to never give up the will to score and stand out among the others. Its simple yet smart, its exciting, but most importantly its different.

Personally I love how they present the message of the show. On the surface it’s about this mad sports-scientist trying to condition these athletes into being unflappable egoists willing to claw and scratch at each other to be the last one standing. But notice how the most important players in most matches tend to be essentially playmakers, like Isagi, whose unique ability revolves around reading the game and his teammates and “sniffing” out the best ways for his team to score. And when that one dude ratted his team out and switched squads in the middle of a game, his selfish behavior wasn’t celebrated, it was scolded. So it does an amazing job of depicting why having a healthy ego is important, and the difference between toxic ego and good ego. An unwavering belief in yourself, a striving need to top your competitors, a hunger to be the best. You can still have that and be a great teammate. I promise you there’s no top athlete in the world who doesn’t have an ego.

And while I appreciate that people like the show, as someone who played the sport and still watches it extensively, for me, blue lock is simply too antithetical to how the sport is actually taught and played. Spain literally won a world cup by using teamwork and passing other teams into oblivion. And if all you needed to win the world cup was a single world class striker, then Poland should be a title contender (they have Robert Lewandowski, arguably the best striker on the planet), yet they aren't even likely to get out of their group in this world cup.

The premise isn't realistic, yet I cannot say completely bogus, either. The initial speech Ego made about Japanese being so good at team work and perfecting our own part well that we don't easily produce an individual that utterly stands out and pull the rest of the team -- that was so real. Japanese Soccer team hasn't been anywhere close to winning the World cup. Who to say that this is a wrong way to find/grow our own David Beckham? So I am buying it for now, and now I want to see how these boys navigate the elimination.

I think that blue lock loses me on its core fundamental, be the best striker and everything will be all right, according to me that's just bs, your whole team needs to be good. Without good defenders, goalkeepers, you stand no chance against even decent players who are coordinating well. Being the best striker frankly means nothing, you need to be the best player and in my defination, best player is, who does his role well without sacrificing much in return. Blue lock is just not realistic in its approach, if you like it, it can be for a lot of things but not your love for soccer.

I like it because it encompasses my love for winning. Any sport, any aspect in life. If you’re not determined to be the best you’ll get left behind.

U-20 Japan in blue lock already have a good defender and midfielder, they just lack strikers who can score goals

I think it was briefly stated from previous episode that they already have good players for other position or Ego just stated all they need is a striker to win World Cup, not sure.
My problem with Isagi is, he's made to get a skill just because the author feed it to him. For example the spatial awareness, It's not something you'll get in a snap of a finger and we are not shown signs if he got it beforehand (I do hope later it will be explain). But he somehow unlocks it during a match. Like how, when, where's the build up.
Another one is "fxk teamwork" in first 2 episodes this anime is being sold by that concept yet as the story progress it turns out "teamwork is the key to win" and you actually rely to your teammates. What a bait & switch.

I just don't understand how the tension in this anime is pretty much too much, relax boy it's football and it's not like you'll be killing butchering everybody else.

Blue lock is that one anime that SHOWS egoism is good when done right. I CANNOT explain how hype and competitive and fired up I get just seeing the rivalry between these neck to neck matches go.

This anime is more psychological than anything else and I love it for that. Sadly I couldn't get into other sports anime, the power of friendship is cool and all, but it felt kinda tame, I really liked Hajime no Ippo though, but that's an old time favourite of mine, before i even realized "oh it's a sports anime". Blue Lock is phenomenal on more than one level and the thing they talk about is completely true, if you don't look after yourself or prioritise yourself, you'll never get anywhere and you can't help anyone when the time comes. As much as I hate the admit, the whole "it's the thought that counts" doesn't exist. What exists are results.

if you guys like blue lock, i highly recomend picking up the manga. After a friend recomended it to me i sat down and read almost 200 chapters in one sitting. The blue lock manga is 200 chapters of pure high octane and hype matches with some amazing art!
10/10 highly recomend, just give it a few chapters ;)
