      @@sinofsloth8201 Not idolizes, no.
That's like saying America idolizes non-gun violence just because Batman exists.
The manga, from what I've read so far, is designed to break social stereotypes that exist predominantly in Japan by basically saying "Guys, we don't have an ace."
From the very beginning, plenty of in-universe characters find the egotism thing terrifying, especially with the way Ego portrays it. If it idolized the concept, though, no such struggle would even happen. They'd just all go "he's right!" and call it a day.
Also, the world generally cares about strikers' names, and soccer players/footballers in other roles frequently have to work extra hard just to get noticed. Which is annoying, I might add, but it _is_ part of that sort of pressure that pushes popular names to try and live up to the expectations and attention they receive.

Haven't read it, but from what i heard of it blue lock basically says: if we had a world class player we would win
Well... Wow, what a discovery, that is not that true...
The problem is the competition at low level cups, if low the chance to create a better player doesn't increase
The country where i live is good at football(even if in decline) but the region where i live is one of the weakest
Half a million people but there are 80 teams, some of them represent towns with less than 2k inhabitants, most of the team are very weak, so most of the tournament we would play shit teams, never improving because there's no competition, and always the same teams over the years
The moment we play with mediocre teams from other regions, we would see the difference, normally losing or drawing with a bit of luck. Those teams normally represent 15k+ inhabitants towns and play more often a wider variety of opposing teams
To me blue lock has a very simplistic vision of football, whereas to improve it to a national scale you need large scale reforms, not a philosophy. Most of the teams in my region have this philosophy: "the striker has to be the one with more skills, everyone else to defend. Let the striker do everything when attacking, everyone else in the back defending."
Only when an entire team is capable of being on par with the other team, the striker will shine

You should have explored the clash between Ronaldo and Rivaldo in 2002 World Cup. Both wanted to score goals and don´t pass to each other. The brazilian media covered this, and even today people talk about it. I don´t know if you can find content in english talking about it. But for me, it´s the best example. While Ronaldo was more like a superstar, Rivaldo never really liked to appear on tv shows or interviews; but both were in some degree egotistical. There´s even a joke made by Ronaldo on the aftermath of the last match. They were on the bus, going to hotel, and Ronaldo said "I just wanna say that if Rivaldo was willing to pass the ball to me, I wouldn't have scored just 8 goals, but 16". Everyone laughed, even Rivaldo. On the last match, both had the same score, 6 goals.

In the final, Rivauldo played as a dummy to Ronaldo, so that Ronaldo can score. A pass was going to Rivaldo, he dodged it so that it reach Ronaldo. I think the clash is overplayed. RIvaldo, was the heart and brain of that Brazil team according to the coach, and Ronaldo was Ronaldo, the one everyone placed their bet on. Maybe Ronaldo said that as banter, because he missed another GOAT Romario, his greatest strike partnership. It worked.

This thirst for "Ego" is born out of a societal context. Japanese culture is in many ways suffocating. Heavily emphasizes and enforces conformity, there are many younger people who may dress or look different in an act of self-expression, but if you look deeper, any real challenge to the status quo and break from the norm is incredibly difficult and rare.
which brings me to my point: The lack of Ego is really saying the Japanese National Team "Plays to not lose, rather than to win". In Japanese society, the need to conform often outweighs the need to be exceptional. And likewise, the Japanese national football team's "team play" philosophy is a natural application of that ethos. So if its a team based playstyle, the whole team shares the responsibility. But if a egotistical player emerge, he will draw all the responsibility for whatever the outcome may be, and not care, just because he thought it was the right play. That is exactly the opposite of the values japanese society teach their kids from a young age, which are: be mindful of others, don't cause trouble for others.
That's why there are so few egotistical, or as said in japan メンタル強い (strong willed) players. Because its simply the opposite of what the society thinks is good and desirable. And if a kid had those qualities he would be a pariah growing up in school, because he would be less agreeable.

I think what the mangaka wanted to tell is that we need to have some degree of ego in ourselves to grow, teamwork is important but holding yourself back for the sake of teamwork is killing your potential.
I remember a quote in Kuroko no basket: "Simply getting along isn't teamwork"
Meaning that each player in a team need to be strong on their own in order to get a good teamwork.
In Blue lock first episode, Isagi passed the ball in critical moment instead of shooting the ball himself. That wasn't a team work, Isagi was the best player on their team, his team mates should have help him score for the team, not dragging him down.

Me being terrible comes from my lack of confidence. I watched him play in awe as he was dominating the other team by himself and it was very obvious how hungry he was for the ball and his teammates noticed it and passes the ball to him every time. After watching the game, I realized that his character stem from not caring about what others think and being confident of his own abilities, basically someone who is egotistical. A few thing, for people who seem to be taking it too seriously on its themes:
▪︎the manga-ka has actively shown that teamwork is still more effective in the manga itself. This is likely intentional.
▪︎The concept of an Ego can be applied to anyone on earth. You all have a little bit of it.
▪︎You can be egotistical about many things. It doesn't have to be about your ability to only be a striker.
Being egotistical about every move you make, even a pass, being the right choice for example. Thinking you always make the correct decision is still egotistical.
▪︎They portray the coach as somewhat of the antagonist. Give it time, because it seems clear it's not going the direction you think it is. The manga is showcasing a half truth. And the players themselves in the manga are starting to realise the potential of teamwork by themselves while ALSO having an Ego.

From reading Blue Lock I learned that Egoism is a concept that can be taken from a lot of angles.
For example, here in Uruguay ALL famous strikers have an attitude of being grateful for where they are and that it's not just thanks to them that they are where they are. The thing is, I don't think that egoism is a concept that contradicts what I just said and many people tend to think that. I believe that egoism for a striker is a concept that speaks about their attitude when playing. It's not about a striker being a complete jerk with his teammates, it's about him being conscious that he is the best one at scoring goals in the team and that the team acknowledges this, it's about making his own team feel like "if we manage pass the ball to him, the game is over" and to make your team feel this way, you have to show them (through your egoism) that you are really the best for that job.
It's like in the start of the manga, maybe you see that if you pass the ball to your teammate on your right it will surely end up as an easy goal, but instead of doing that you realize what are you capable of. That no matter how easy that pass and goal seems, you will always have more chances because you are the forward, you are the one with the number 9 in your back, you KNOW you are the best for that job and so you decide to shoot instead. Maybe it ends up as a goal and maybe not, but playing with that mentality makes the best forwards in the world, it's like a swordman swinging the sword over and over again until they are trully capable of making the perfect cut
In conclusion: Egoism is not about being a dumbass and egoism is not about not playing as a team, is knowing that in order for a team to be good at scoring goals, their forward must want to score everytime he touches the ball and not think about anything else. (although there's no need for him to be the only one scoring goals).
PD: There are teams that don't play with an unique forward and their mentality is much more team-oriented, like Pep guardiola's teams, this depends on every person. But I think that nowadays there's always a team that can beat that kind of "team-oriented" teams with pure efficiency, like Real Madrid for example.

Gotta share my thoughts on the manga:
Ego is using the Blue Lock elimination system to enforce an improvement and promote the players' individuality. As painfully brutal as his words can be, it makes sense that you have to stand out or you'll never make your dream a reality. The chemical reactions he puts emphasis on is to promote synergy so the players don't stick to one style in particular. He also promotes this further by making sure no team stays the same in terms of line up, he's essentially making the players learn to be adaptive.
This also makes me think Isagi's ability isn't spatial awareness but Adaptability in of itself.

I do believe egotism is needed to be a successful player, you need to believe you are the best. Idk if its because its natural for humans to compete but something about coming out on top is one of the most effective goals. Its crazy. But selfishness is needed in this team sport. I feel like this video should be watched by people who hate blue lock specifically because in the first few chapters they make it clear that a egotistical striker guides a team, and so people who love football irl drop it because they think that is a wrong philosophy for football which is a team sport. I mean there is clear evidence that strikers like these exist and that this philosophy is not bs. Also blue lock is quite self aware about its own philosophy of an egotistical player being unordinary as they mention how such player havent won a world cup, how itoshi sae, one of the best players we hv seen so far, not being a striker etc. Great analysis btw :)
Edit : I shd have made it clear in my original comment but blue lock elaborates plenty on it's ego philosophy, people hv to stop taking it at its face value. There is much more to the story then "egotistical striker is all a team needs", hell even one of the strikers from the og cast becomes a main stay goalie. You might have put some work in this, and I laud you for that, but mate you are misrepresenting a lot of things, you do not consider all the other factors that come into play for the justification of your point, like how Mourinho achieved fame for defensive football, has nothing to do with egotistical strikers, how Messi was carrying Barcelona and does not even play a striker position, so their underperformance was inevitable, how Ronaldo left Juventus at the end of the windows not given them anytime to find a suitable replacement, and a number of other points you made.
What is happening here is you seem to be misrepresenting what an Egotistical Striker is or at least the manga seems to be. Wanting to score goals is not egotistical, wanting to score the highest number of goals is not egotistical, wanting to be acknowledged for the goals you score is not egotistical, wanting to score goals at the detriment of your team is egotistical. Egotistical just means excessively self centered, has nothing to do with a winning mentality or guiding the team or any of such things. Sure an Egotistical striker wants their team to win, but they wants their team to win ONLY because of them, and get frustrated even if their team wins and they don't score, because it is about them.
Your point even veers into how City and Liverpool are changing the mold by not using Egotistical strikers, WHAT?!!! Are Egotistical strikers now every strikers?!!! because that was the point you were making by the end.
Being egotistical in of itself does not make you a great player or make your team win, it always comes down to ability, compare Ronaldo & Balotelli, to prime examples of Egotistical strikers. Ronaldo can be egotistical because he delivers when you give him the ball, and so is a top-top level player, Balotelli flip flops, and so he has bounced around teams.
Japan leads 2 - 0 and gets beaten 3 -2 and think they need a better striker to win? Football has always been a team game, and strikers are they most dependent on that team, egotistical or otherwise, if the team can't perform, a striker can't perform. This is why even with an egotistical striker of Ronaldo's caliber, Portugal hasn't done better than Japan in recent years, which blows all of that philosophy out the window, and it's not like Portugal hasn't had good team either, but competition is just competition, and the better team on the day will win, and strikers thrive on service.
You would think after the Belgium debacle that they would focus on defence.

As a 15 year old who's playing football, Blue Lock's philosophy is so true that it had me reflecting. Confidence is one of the most important keys in football and you def won't be able to use your full football potential without it unless you're some kind of blessed prodigy. I especially liked the "scoring boosts your team's efficiency" because that really is true. The more you score, the better your team's football becomes. That was also one of the main reasons why Japan lost against Belgium. The first mistake was the first goal belgium managed to score, after that, it got all of their team's spirit up and got them to their absolute best. It's like that little voice inside of you that tells you: "We're winning this, no matter what" which usually gets players to their absolute peak.

Blue lock feels like a commentary piece to be the anti thesis to aoashi, Which is still fantastic and better imo because of how mentally low you can feel when it's not about you. The need to reform your identity to survive. There is more intangible factors because some people know how to bring the best out of your players as a coach and teammates as a player. An almost complete opposite approach in blue lock when selfishness is brought up as key to be the best. Coaches do recruit for roles for a real football game. What I like about aoashi is how well thought out the coach is in the plot. Realizing instead of just telling the mc hes moving to a defender it made sense to improve him a player and show what's he's lacking. Some players really are just great at connecting other players into the mid field and reading and adapting to teammates. I think there will always be a balance in need when talking about ego and selfless play. If it's to win it's to win. Each situation is different. I can only imagine how demoralizing it is to have a near 40 year old Ronaldo score 5 goals the other day 😂

The way I see It the philosophy of an egotistical striker in the manga isn't really the most important thing in a football team. Roberto Firmino in Liverpool is a prime example of a great striker that doesn't shine though their goals , his positioning and passing makes way for Mo salah and Sadio Mane to shine instead , which in my opinion is one of Liverpool's greatest weapons. If we are seeing ego as having confidence and believing they are the best striker in the world, then I can see that being helpful and something the Japanese team definitely needs.

Getting a world class striker is one step towards winning, but there’s 10 more steps after that. Ronaldo is a world class striker, but the difference between 3 straight champions league wins with Madrid and none with Juventus is the rest of the team. You could say Benzema won the champions league for Madrid this year, but he didn’t score in the final, nor did he set up the goal. Courtois was outstanding, Valverde was a constant threat, and Vinicius won them the game.

Fun fact: among the best strikers in the world that you mentioned, the number of world cups won among them is 0
Messi comes very close in 2014, but if you look at messi’s stats, 711 goals and 300 assist, its hard to say he’s a pure striker according to Jinpachi’s ideal.
Football fans, players and coaches all view Ronaldo and Messi as the best players of their time by a HUGE margin. They basically monopolized the ballon dor at their peak.
And yet, they still didn’t manage to win a single world cup. The era of football has changed, having a single Pele/Ronaldo/Messi/Gerd Muller won’t bring you the world cup.

    • @epicmarschmallow5049

It's never really been the case that you can win a world cup with one great player. Pele was playing in one of the greatest international teams of all time (he was injured for most of one tournament and Brazil still easily won) and Brazil would almost certainly have won their world cups without him. And Gerd Müller wasn't even the best player in the winning Germany team (hi Beckenbauer). Argentina hasn't ever really been a one person team; in 2014 they still had great players like Aguero and Higuain (although the one exception might be Argentina with Maradona)

I agree, but I think we're limiting ego to strictly strikers.
Even in the manga, during the Japan under 20's vs blue lock match, the defenders and midfielders showed to have their own ego as well, proving that ego manifests in different ways depending on a players position and playstyle.
I feel we can apply this to teams like Liverpool which have Salah, who's a striker but also the main playmaker in the team, not just a finisher; suggesting his ego playstyle is more team oriented and thus brings the best out of his fellow teammates.
An even better example is De Bruyne from Man City, an amazing midfielder and playmaker that shapes how the team plays, his ego allows the strikers to score easier goals, thus driving the teams playstyle.
Therefore, ego is needed, but it doesn't have to simply be the strikers, any egotistical player will mold how a team wins matches.

    • @uatom
      @uatom ปีที่แล้ว +4

ego is having an overly high level of self importance, the way you’re using it is as if there’s multiple forms of ego when there isn’t. You can be confident without being egotistical. Salah is a forward that is hungry for goals and can also create goals for other players, that doesn’t mean he has a huge ego.

I do not know where the manga goes eventually, but my casual understanding of modern football is that it resembles the modern management in general to an extremely high degree. The similar goes with other extremely popular sports like cycling. I feel that the fans enjoy the tension/synergy between the ego and the team work. Having referred to the analogy between management and modern sports, I would say there is huge pecuniary incentive for contributing to the team. Best teams pay you huge money for what can be neglected in weaker teams. It is exactly similar to managers that have to reward monetarily to "self-sacrificing" employees that contribute a lot for the productivity of others in a company. Thus, in excellent companies, hopefully, egotism and team work coincide almost perfectly, without each player having to take conscious balance between the two -- it is not the players' job to make a tradeoff but the manager's to reward the best balance. I expect that the manga will finally touch upon this issue later.

I think the term egotistical term in the Blue Lock, didn't essentially to be a rude and arrogant players on and off the field. I think the term in the manga means to have what it takes to be the one who changes the game and lead your team to glory.
Recent chapters of Blue Lock, Bayern Munchen vs Barca, shows that the teams also need certain philosophy and system to win. But, the players inside the team need to have some guts to give 'explosive action' to the team at the critical moment in the match, such as assisting decisive goal, scoring a goal as a defender, or dribble past 2 defenders before scoring the decisive goal (like saying "I'm the One!" figuratively).
Events like that often occurs in the real football matches, such as Trent's 'corner taken quickly' vs Barcelona, Lucas Moura hattrick vs Ajax, Aguero goal vs QPR, Ramos header in UCL final vs Atletico, and many more.
To make those moments, someone in the team need to be egotistical. If everyone in the team don't have what it takes 'to be the one', then your team can't win.

As someone who plays sports, *yes* , you do need “ego” to win.
Although “ego” isn’t the best word, sometimes you have to step forward and be selfish. “You need to play to win, not to lose”, as I’ve seen someone comment.
I don’t think this just applies to strikers, though. In netball the GS (goal shooter) must have “ego” in order to shoot with so much pressure, but so do the other members. If the Defense don’t have “ego”, they will start relying on each other. Sports depends heavily on your mindset, if you keep thinking “oh, it’s fine, the other defence player will get the ball” your team will suck. Because then everyone will rely on that player, and there will be no self improvement.
While I do agree many team sports need strong players and cooperation to be played, every player individually needs their own “ego” for the team to succeed. If every player lacks “ego”, your team will be held back. Confidence in a team is one of the key factors along with training that REALLY determines whether or not the team will do well. You need to believe you CAN do well, if not even if you have the skills you won’t do well.
Great analysis btw! Looking forward to seeing blue lock animated :)

It's funny that you never talk about the team that won the last WC.
France is the perfect example of how a team can actually win a trophy. First, confidence. Second, teamwork. Third, luck.
Confidence is the highlight of Blue Lock, but you'll see that most player with just that don't do much. In fact, confidence is really ever interesting to have only at the same level as your skill. Then it's just a goal, and that's totally different.
An example of that is Kylian Mbappé. He knows perfectly that he isn't the best player in the world when he enters the field with Messi or Ronaldo. But he always tells himself he is. Because it's what broughts all of his capabilities, giving him the chance to actually become the best.
He uses confidence to reach his goal, but doesn't overrate himself, making him a player that does poor decision at times.
That's what brings us to the teamwork aspect. Mbappé, last year, did the most assist of the league. (and all big strikers)
Why? Because even if Mbappé as an ego, he isn't EGOISTICAL, which means "carring only about yourself".
That's why Messi is also not an egoistical player. Because he plays first for the team. But he wants the best for them, so often times he places himself first because he IS the best.
That's is the aspect that Blue Lock fully lacks, and what makes it so repetitive.
Then, luck. Blue Lock touched a bit on that, but basically it's also something you can trigger more likely when you are a good player/team. So it's luck, but also provocking it.
Blue Lock talks about that, only on the player aspect, but it's already pretty good. To bad they don't talk about it anymore.
So while I agree that Japanese soccer (and everything else for that matter) should be more confident, especially when there is results, it's through the team that A TEAM wins. And it will always be like that. You can have the best striker in the world, and still finish 7th in the PL, in the round of sixteen in the Euro or at the Champions League final doors.

An egoestical player at any position
Is a complete disaster for a football team
Even if you have a team full of egoestical players they will probably get blown apart
Just acting that you can dribble past 3 players even if you are a dribbler is immensely hard as the situations keep changing and the probability keeps deferring
You don't know what will the defender do
Same for many positions in football
Picking the right moment is the key to becoming a valuable footballer
Even if you are a shitty player
And of course all this comes from experience and failure first
I think the manga author misunderstood egoestical behaviour in quality players
    That's not a discovery that's a conclusion
    An observation

i get what you're saying but id suggest you to read the manga first. You're misunderstanding being a ball hog to being egoistic. Like no shit that being a ball hog and trying to dribble the entire team and losing the ball would make you a burden to your team. It was established in the first couple of chapters of the manga that you shouldn't be unrealistic and do only according to your skill level.
Blue lock is a training facility which is centred AROUND egoism. It's not saying that you should play football egotistically , far from it actually, that's why it's differentiating itself from other players of the field and bringing it only strikers, as ego believes that there's always this one extraordinary player every match that guides his team to victory, like literally a few days ago, did you see how RMA played against Liverpool the entire match, the driving force of RMA that day was undeniably Courtois, if you watched his interview after you'll notice that his drive was based on egoism (in a good way). Ego only wants to create the "perfect" japanese striker out of all these strikers in a dog-eat-dog environment so he can be the central driving force to the under 20 national team eventually .
tl;dr: the "egoist" type of play is only exclusive inside the blue lock facility as it is a decisive factor for the other strikers to evolve in their own ways in that dog-eat-dog environment so that they can filter out the best striker out of them eventually. It's not saying that football should be played egotistically.

Great video. I a 100% agree with the premise that a team can only get you so far but to Transcend to the next level, there has to be leader with an insane ego to push the barrier down so the team will win. In his pursuit of excellence, the others benefit. As to teams like Man City and Liverpool not having egotistical strikers, their coaches are the egos driving the teams.
Another thing is multiple egos cannot coexist.... Either one how's down for the other or leaves the team to the greater ego.

The problem with Ego's mindset is that he only has one definition of ''success''. Okazaki is a VERY succesfull player in my opinion. Any player that can earn a living only playing football is more succesfull than 99% of players that get stuck in unprofesional leagues. Any player that gets to go to a World Cup is more succesfull than the vast majority of profesional footballers.
If we are talking just about elite goalscorers, then, yes, they need to have a certain amount of ego and overconfidence to stand-out. But seriously, even if Japan had an elite striker, they wouldn't have won the 2018 World Cup. They simply didn't have the talent to win it. The team-based mentality lead them to a very good performance against Belgium, that were one of the favourites, don't forget that.
Still, the anime is very entertaining.

To everyone saying "Blue Lock is unrealistic, no one wins by himself", Jinpachi Ego is clearly the bad guy in the story, it's normal that his idea is wrong. From the very first match in the manga you can clearly see that without a good team you can't event manage to get a scoring chance. The main character will learn it with time

That's what I thought at first too, until the match against Barou, and how he guided his team when they used him to score more goals and win the match. The truth is teams are always going to revolve around the "star" who they rely on. It's inevitable, and not just a thing in soccer. Albeit, in soccer we have a term for them, "strikers".

This is true mate... To make a strong character like other anime, sure they can come up with anything but in today's reality and the real world context, man no one runs the team alone, you can take Ronaldo's example at Man U, or Real Madrid (where he was surrounded by modric, cruse, benzema, Ramos and others and Real Madrid won champions league again without Ronaldo with their journey being one of the most iconic journey's ever) or messi when he was at Barca. Messi tried with all his might but then Barca crashed way hard that will still be remembered by everyone in the sport, the example being 8-2 with Bayern. Good for character development but these anime will never talk about the tactical problems the real match had, its always the personality of a player and that they should be mentally strong and believe they are the best. But in the face of overwhelming talented teams like the European countries or the South Americans, obviously its going to be hard. The way to win is how Leicester did it in the premier league, not just a single player, but the whole damn team. Liverpool, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern, they run through other teams because of the chemistry of the team and their tactics and not because all the teammates are egotistical.
A good anime would be kuroko's Basket where everyone is so damn talented that it just destabilises the team. Pig is a good example where the egos are too big to control. They win but were knocked out in the champions league and the French cup.
A real example of a good philosophy is obviously haikyuu. That's the philosophy that gets you to winning titles. The team chemistry, moreover the tactics, individual abilities going in harmony with the team, that's how you win something.

I do agree that having a bit of an ego is needed to succeed at such a high level, but being confident in each play you make or always thinking you're the best to give yourself a confidence boost is different from being egotistical.
A truly egotistical player is not gonna be able to make the best decisions during a game cause by definition they're gonna be too into themselves. As the manga goes on it is clear that the real philosophy of the story is to be able to shine as an individual while being able to help the team, but again that is different from being egotistical.
As a striker it is obviously needed to have the will to takeover games or score when the team needs the most, cause some games are truly decided by the individual plays of star caliber players.
For example how Mbappe dribbled his way into scoring the goal that gave PSG the win against Real in the first leg. But PSG is also the prime example of a team full of incredible individual players that are not really able to work together.

as a athlete, ego is more of a easy answer to the problem. Egos create leaders. Teams such as Liverpool, real Madrid, and even the golden state warriors are really rare because you got guys who are willingly pushing themselves to the extreme as well as being able to cooperate well with one another. However, most teams are going to have players who lack that will to get better because of just who they are. Therefore, you got the egotistical assholes who are there to push the team because the team couldn't push themselves. This may cause alot of the focal point to be focused on these guys but what can you do if the team isn't as good as that guy. That's why you hear guys like Michael jordan talk about how he pushes his teammates way too far because he wants them to be at the level that he is at no matter how bad they are.
