R.I.P. RALPHIE!!! I will never forget our childhood years in Pleasantville N.J.! We played together on the Little League team and "BOY", how Ralph was a beast on the trumpet in the jazz ensemble and P.H.S. Band.
and the wisest man on earth has yet another thing to learn but this guy has the wisdom and humility to explain properly. a life lesson in a roll. amazing
One of the best examples showing how jazz drumming differs from most other styles. Aside from his vast knowledge of the drum set, it’s obvious that he has a highly developed ear and knowledge of harmony, form, history etc. -So much more than just being skilled in terms of technique on the drums (of which he is also exceptional in that area as well).
Thank you! The drummer's dream is to play the tune. After hearing Max Roach playing, you know that he was living the dream like no other drummer. Ed Blackwell was certainly a great tune player too, especially with those marvellous Ornette Coleman tune lines.
That's just not fair. Not only is he a great drummer but he can play the trumpet very well. Great teaching and demonstration. I would chew on this one a while in the practice room.
What you gave here is so much more than I ever thought I would get. You gave an insight into how to think, and that is more valuable than any lesson I could ever imagine. Thank you!
I love the way you describe playing...musically. The next step is having your limbs do what you convey to them. Not easy for some of us, but thanks for the inspiration.
One of the best instructions on the set-he approaches in a musical way not all flash technique and just hitting every instrument on the kit. He plays musical form and knows how to instruct his skill. Ralph you are a true inspirations to a 60 year percussionist and drummer. Thank you
That was tight right and outta sight~!!! excellent player - drums and trumpet and no doubt on the bass and piano as well. I play in a tradtional country/western swing/big band group and sometimes we all take a short solo on a western swing or big band swing tune and my brief solo's are always built around the "melody" of the tune - just never knew it was an "accepted" style of playing a drum solo~!
BEAUTIFUL! I have been playing drums all my life. Mainly a jazz drummer. Also play piano. With you, never have I witnessed such an accomplished no-effort expertise. You have got something really important figured out. I know I lot of really good drummers that should give you a listen. Take care my friend. I wish you all of the respect that you truly deserve.
I find that Mr. Peterson's videos help me more than just about anything out there on the web! Some people just have the gift of teaching. In this case, we have a great teacher AND a great performer! Thank you for taking your time to share these nuggets of wisdom Ralph!
what I dig is the the fact that he understands the connection between the fist two instruments that were originally made an used in communication since the beginning of man, a drum an horn..
Thank you so much! Man, trully! I could hear every single note from the trumpet on drums! Incredible! You're amazing! I really like to be your student! Thank you again!
Would like to hear you play the trumpet then play the drums over it or together with it so we can get the full sound. Thanks. Awesome sound. Very very informative full of wisdom.
I hope this can get more drummers to stop playing so much drummy stuff when they solo i.e.something they obviously practiced the hell out of and sounds like it too.Like a gymnast..This is the way Philly.Bu,Frank Butler,Tony and all those guys who really had an easily identifiable and distinct voice on the kit. Thanks Ralph!
You're amazing, dude. Seriously. I like to think of myself as a musician but the way you talk about music, I can't hold court to that. You're the bomb, blowin up on my ass.
