  • After using a cheap, flimsy sun shade in my car I decided to try out this "premium" more durable sun shade I found at Walmart.

As an update I quit using this sunshade about a year ago. It still remained sturdy but the coating on the charcoal side started peeling off every time I folded it back up and it was making too much of a mess. I took it out of my car and used a stiff brush to get as much of the loose pieces off but more of it keeps peeling off so I decided it's not worth the mess and bought a cheaper AutoZone one. It's not near as sturdy but the foil isn't coated with any thing that will peel off. I don't know why Dickies doesn't make this exact shade in a standard silver, uncoated, foil on both sides. I'd be more than happy with one like that but unfortunately I can't find any other Dickies shades aside from this one and I think they had Ford/Chevy ones, and maybe a US flag one but those are all coatings that will probably peel off over time like this charcoal one did. Also I know you're supposed to tuck the middle section behind the rear view mirror but I have my radar detector beside my rear view mirror and I'm not going to take it off every time I put the shade in and also my mirror is pretty easy to move so I don't want to be constantly bumping it with the shade which is what would happen if I tucked it underneath it.

I've been using these Dickies sun shades in my 18-wheeler for years. They're great because the extra thickness adds to their insulation and light blocking properties.
A couple of tips (some already mentioned here)...
    1. Shiny foil side faces out for maximum cooling effect. By putting the gray plastic side facing out the heat damaged it and caused it to break down and peel.
    2. The cutout at the top is so that you can wiggle the shade behind your rear view mirror for a better fit. You want it close against the glass to keep the heat out.
    3. If the shade is too wide from side to side you can either do what you did and fold the sides in, or let them extend out past the A-pillars for extra coverage.
    4. When the shade is open for use I just re-clip the retaining strap to itself so that it's a small loop, instead of having the clips dangling down.

So the shiny side goes on the outside the black side goes on the inside to absorb heat from the inside of the vehicle

Thanks for this. I bought one a couple weeks ago and wasn’t sure which side goes on the outside.

So i just purchased this 2day, july 27 2023. Was curious on which side to put out. So i tested it out with a temp gun i had. Having the reflective side was about 15-20 degrees cooler. So ill be having the reflected side facing out. Dont care about color and/or design. Im trying to keep my vehicle much cooler.

Great video but the shade is supposed to go in front of the rear view mirror. It will be more secure that way and wont create a heat bubble in the middle of the windshield.

Yep.. maybe if he put the first one on right it wouldn't have started sagging it would have still worked as it was if he stuck it behind the rearview like he was supposed to

      Sameee😐
Because some shades have the prints or designs on them or even all black (mine), and on the packaging it shows the designs being displayed on the windshield and the foil is on the inside.
Just had a girl watch me install my shade and she walks up and tells me to flip it so the foil is facing the windshield.😒

After looking at the custom fit WeatherTech sun shades (which are very expensive) I noticed they say the foil side is for in the summer to reflect the sun and the black side is for in the winter to absorb heat and keep the windshield from frosting. Obviously black absorbs heat and this brighter/shinier side should reflect it however the black side looks so much better than using the foil side and I honestly haven’t noticed much of a heat difference in my car. I’ll have to wait until next summer when I get a few blistering hot days to see if the colors make much of a difference but as long as it doesn’t get ridiculously hot I think I’d rather go with the black side year round.

Mr Everything . Sorry for this stupid question, but I recently bought the Dickies smoke charcoal magic shade 2 piece, and was wondering which sides face out. The dark charcoal color or the Silver side. I called customer service and a young woman said the Silver side. But the tags are on the Silver side making them show when facing out. Did you put the dark side out also? I live in Florida so pretty hot here a lot. Your feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

I got a Dickies one today at Walmart for four dollars...he has it inside out the reflective side should be facing outside and the rear view should be inside the shade that's what the dip in the middle is for

I don't use this sunshade anymore but I'd like to note that I specifically bought this because it's labaed as "charcoal" clearly the charcoal side is supposed to face outward. Most sunahades are silver on both sides but this one allows you to use the darker side so it doesn't look as noticible in your windshield. Why would you buy a shade marketed as charcoal but then have it face inward so you don't see it? I'm aware that most sunshades have the silver side face outward and it does help reflect the sun however as I have mentioned even with the charcoal side facing outward it still kept the interior much cooler than not using a sunshade at all, even though it is slightly less effective than using the silver side. I also purposely didn't tuck the shade behind the rear view mirror because it's stiff and would likely move the mirror every time I'd press it behind it, plus then it would get in the way or my radar detector and I'd have to remove it from the mount every time as well.

I recently needed another sunshade for my other car and noticed Walmart now sells this same Dickies sunshade in several different colors and styles. Most of them are all regular silver/foil but just with the far ends having a little colored vinyl piece so I bought one to try it out since they’re a good bit larger and sturdier than most other sunshades for the same price. So far it’s holding up well and with no coating on the foil to flake off I’m hoping this one lasts for a few years.

I bought one and used it. Didn't matter which side I had facing out, the shield was burning hot on both sides when I tried to remove. Steering wheel was burning and the gear shift was burning. Not sure why. Also the strap broke second time I used it.
