  • A review/critique/analysis of the Gothic Remake Playable Teaser, taking an in-depth look at what the remake gets right and wrong with the Gothic formula, with comparisons to the original game. The remake shows promising signs but is ultimately a long way from feeling like a true Gothic game. This video is meant to provide constructive feedback for the THQNordic Barcelona Studio, and to further highlight the unique strengths and triumphs of the original Gothic by Piranha Bytes.

Notes, and summarizing/breaking it up into further parts with timestamps.
    *Timestamps/Highlights from the Introduction*
1:28-2:41 People want a Gothic remake, but this fails to meet expectations in several regards.
2:41-3:14 Obviously there will be differences. Change can be good, but some of the things they've modified are very detrimental to the experience.
    *Timestamps/Highlights from Immersion*
3:14-4:37 Gothic was open-ended and immersive. The remake is neither.
4:37-6:04 Excessive on-screen prompts. Controls should be consistent enough that prompts should not be necessary.
6:04-7:49 Contrasting interactability, prompts, and object highlights from the remake to the original. The original was better in almost every way, but may have used some methods that might not translate well into a more modern video game... But it would still be better than the direction they've taken it in the remake.
7:50-8:52 An almost complete lack of freedom of exploration and movement. The original game world had enough natural barriers that invisible walls should not be necessary.
8:53-11:01 Bad artificial barriers. More on a lack of freedom of movement and exploration. Somewhat poor and non-discrete world design. Also floating object markers. Basic crouch walking adds some potential for additional hidden areas and movement, but at the expense of more open climbing and swimming mechanics.
11:01-11:55 Bad and intrusive UI elements. Auto-hiding is nice when the displayed resources are not in use. (They should really just add options that players can customize for UI element positions, maybe size, and whether or not they auto-hide.)
11:56-14:24 The original game's UI elements tended to be on the fringes of the screen and non-intrusive, menus would not pause, examining objects like books and maps was immersive. One bad thing about the original game's inventory was that it required a lot of scrolling as items were only ever displayed in one column at a time. The remake's menus take you out of the experience completely. The remake's journals and books look nice, but should be taken out of the menus.
14:25-15:06 Groundwork for Quest tracking and markers are bad signs. The original gave you enough direction from dialogue and context clues that hand-holding was not necessary and it encouraged exploration.
15:07-16:22 More bad and intrusive UI elements. Made worse due to being redundant. Often distracting.
    16:23-16:50 Bad dialogue interface.
16:51-18:22 Strict, non-immersive tutorial pop-ups with videos. Contrasted to immersive in-world tutorialization of actions that can be taken or that should be avoided often through dialogue.
18:07-20:52 Loudmouth protagonist that talks too much, especially to himself... and to the player? Contrasted to the snarky and quippy protagonist who, despite those characteristics and personality, largely only spoke when appropriate with his inner monologue relegated to the quest journal.
20:53-22:04 Excessive cut scenes and restriction of player control.
    *Timestamps/Highlights from Combat*
22:04-25:06 In theory an improvement/expansion on the original. Reliance on UI elements is bad for immersion. Slow, sluggish, clunky, unresponsive, inconsistent. Camera and environment often annoying. Camera, character model, and UI elements synced poorly they move too much and are difficult to follow.
25:07-25:50 Obviously designed for controllers in mind. Feels bad with mouse & keyboard.
25:51-26:41 It all feels clunky and unpolished, but it's possible that's intentional.
26:42-27:47 He believes it could work well if the UI elements were removed, and the animations were made more broad, telegraphed, or exaggerated, with attack patterns that could be learned per enemy type... But also faster and more action oriented.
27:48-28:09 The camera in combat is bad. It should be fixed and made more consistent with the camera outside of combat.
28:10-28:52 The combat is drastically different from the original, most fans will probably hate it. He likes the concept of it, but not the execution of it. It could easily be scrapped for something more similar to Piranha Bytes' games. It should still have progression for animations, combos, and damage thresholds.
    *Timestamps/Highlights from Hand-Holding*
28:53-32:10 The remake feels like a highly restrictive and highly scripted tutorial. Intrusive UI elements pop up to tell you everything you're expected to do. You are either made incapable of performing certain actions, or the actions you take prompt no reaction from the characters or have little to no impact on the environment.
32:11-34:15 Enemies that should pose a serious threat to an untrained nobody are too easy to defeat, especially for being level 0 with a broken sword. It makes the progression of power feel lacking compared to the original.
    *Timestamps/Highlights from Story/Setting*
34:16-34:32 Scavengers and Snappers are now too similar, they used to be distinct from one another.
34:32-34:49 All creatures are now automatically aggressive rather than getting defensive and just trying to scare you off. Bad for immersion.
34:49-36:36 Enemy placement compared to the original doesn't make sense.
36:36-37:38 Changes to the course of events in the name of flash and dramatization might not mesh well with the original plot/course of events.
37:38-39:10 Changes to the introduction display less of the character's personality, and also provides little to no motivation or incentive to carry out what was one of the original game's first major objectives.
39:10-40:22 The barrier cannot be interacted with, and also feels like it plays less of an important role in the story and environment.
    *Timestamps/Highlights from Atmosphere*
40:23-49:42 The original game was overall presented in a more bleak and hostile manner, particularly with washed out colors and a dying, foggy world within the barrier overcast by dark clouds. The remake is too bright, colorful, and pretty. Disabling some post-processing effects aids somewhat in bringing it more in-line with the original game's aesthetic and tone.
41:56-44:55 The environment is supposed to be daunting and dangerous. But everything in the remake is intended to be beaten upon your first encounter. The starting sequence and cut scenes are made to give the appearance of danger, but are not representative of the actual game. You should be forced to fail or run before getting rescued.
44:56-49:42 Characters in the remake are too kind, refined, and optimistic. For the most part they're supposed to be hostile or neutral, unrefined convicts. Shown by their voices, actions, and their attitudes.
48:47-49:02 The pauses in Diego's dialogue lines are only detrimental.
    *Timestamps/Highlights from Quest*
49:42-51:31 The prompts for one of the quests makes sense. Another seems forced. Quests having choices with potentially long-term consequences is nice. (I personally felt they were trying too hard to be similar to Mass Effect or The Witcher.)
    *Timestamps/Hightlights from Music*
51:32-53:37 Needs less generic and dramatic orchestrated music. Needs more original Gothic music. Combat music is over the top, definitely sounds like it's trying to be The Witcher 3. Original basically didn't even have combat music, it didn't need it.
    *Timestamps/Highlights from Technical Issues*
53:38-54:39 Inconsistent controls. Incorrect UI elements. Manual save feature has no effect as the remake reverts back to checkpoints. Horrible optimization.
    *Timestamps/Highlights from Conclusions*
54:40-56:47 Most changes are a bit much, but some of them are nice. Discussing the positives, particularly focusing on implementation of elements of Gothic canon. Talking about changes that could/should be made.

Yes, I had the feeling I was playing The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, but there are many pluses and minuses. Pluses: 1. good story (Gothish enough), 2. good music (symphonic orchestra with medieval, sometimes heroic features), 3. realism in interacting with the environment (in most of cases), 4. interesting theatrical dialogues (the NPCs are slicker and they try to manipulate you), 5. smart beasts (they try flank you or take you by surprise), 6. credible gestures, 7. you have multiple choices and decision you take have - "YEAH. CONSEQUENCES" (I simply can't forget John Wick: Chapter 3 Parrabellum's famous quote) - and you have to be extra careful in the future because people in this world never forget (just try to partially / entirely lie Cayden or attack him and you'll know what I mean), 8. intuitive placement of rare items, 9. you can escape dangerous foes and come back to them when you're more prepared, 10. you can revisit old places in case you've forgotten something, 11. you can solve the quests in a desired manner and order (there is no obvious linearity except the main storyline), 12. you can dramatically die if you fall from heights or simply jump from high cliffs, 13. realistic items and beautiful, inspired weapons and outfits for characters. Minuses: 1. a not so eerie atmosphere (perhaps it is absent in this beginning), 2. you cannot skip dialogues when they last too much (or whenever you want to repeat them) 3. some inconsistent movements, you look clumsy when you want to climb certain platforms (you need the "run and jump" movement on the circular steps in temple of Beliar) 4. highlighted items and interactive NPCs (i.e. the dead looted bodies you can even see from a considerable distance), 5. fire doesn't affect you, 6. emptied chests are not to be open again (and they are still highlighted), 6. you cannot jump into the water, 7. some items (even the quest ones) respawn after you die and you reload / restart the game (I've collected the swords and the exquisite wine for Orry more than twice) 8. you can sometimes get stuck when you cook (next to the gate Orry is guarding) or when you access the quick items wheel 9. bugs in beasts behaviour (wolves, scavengers), 10. you can only access NPCs, fireplaces or climbing platforms when you are prompted to do so. 11. Automatically locking on the first foe you encounter. 12. you cannot sneak with the weapon drawn. Expectations: 1. more useful, interactive items like pickaxes (I hope you can learn to scrap some ore) 2. trainers of any sort (when you start your adventure you are not so dumb (you know how to hold a sword or pick a lock - are you supposed to have certain skills from the beginning, are you to be taught in others or you can simply learn skills by trial-and-error method?) 3. improving / sharpening weapons, 4. sleeping, if necessary (you can eat, drink, urinate...). 5. day and night cycle, 5. challenging music when you are spotted / attacked and not whenever you unsheate your weapon 6. intuitive, intriguing puzzles and secret entrances. 7. unique weapons, armors and other interesting items, 8. swimming, 9. rare books you can learn secrets / skills, 10. a large variety of credible weapons like slashing and thrusting swords, axes, hammers, maces, bow and crossbows (I like Diego's rapier and his ornated bow, by the way), shields and so on. 12. interactive lock picking 11. stealth actions (assassinations, pickpocketing), 12. realistic archery (most like Diego is doing, despite some inconsistencies like anchoring too far fom his face) because - trust me - nobody shoots bows horizontally as you can see in most of the classic games. I understand the game will be released sometime in 2021 so our expectations should be high.

There no way they see the error in their ways, abandon any design decision the made and start from scratch to create a worthy remake. The only thing I expect to hear from them into future are statements like: "we listend to feedback and changed the game" to trick us into believing that we get what we want, while trying to attract the the infamous broader audience.

This remake shows all the reasons why I never asked for a remake.
Personally, I didn't enjoy the free climbing or the combat. However, the fact that I had no map, a horrible sense of direction and could easily run I to enemies that would wipe the floor with me made for excellent ludonarrative storytelling. I feared the wild and venturing into it was a huge deal. I sticked closely to the roads between camps and did everyone's busywork quests because I was a wimp who dreamed of some day beating up that smug asshole in the old camp that wanted protection money every day.
Another aspect: armor design. The game teached you very fast what having an armor meant: power. This means both physical power because you have to jump through various hoops to get even light armor and could always seek trouble with a mercenary or try beating up Thoron, but also social power. Even with the relatively chill people in the new camp, it was obvious who really runs this camp. Anyhow, now, they give the core characters unique costumes. That kinda ruins the impression that they are part of this elaborate social order. Diego is a good example, he's just an affable shadow, not the cloak and dagger hero the remake presents him as. But just that he doesn't treat you like dirt and takes the time to tell you things is enough to make you appreciate him.
In the new Gothic, a guy in an ornate armor fit for a king praises you for doing a fetch quest. In the old Gothic, the same guy wore the armor of Gomez elite and has people beating you up if you don't regularly pay for protection racket. In the old Gothic, your first experience with a Snapper probably is that it kills you with one attack, in the new Gothic, you fight against three with a broken sword and then keep them away in a cutscene with flailing around. Basically, I wouldn't be surprised if Innos told the nameless hero in a vision that he is the chosen one at this point.

    • @AveSicarius
      @AveSicarius ปีที่แล้ว +1

I mean Diego isn't a hero, but he is pretty cloak and dagger personality wise given his side narrative with his gang (Lester, Gorn, and Milten) and how they actively work together to try and maintain some degree of balance within the prison colony, for their own benefit of course. This could absolutely be built on, because these guys are all fairly high ranking in their respective factions while still maintaining a somewhat low profile compared to the big dogs. This allows them to subtly gather and exchange information in hopes of getting out of the prison eventually but also just making sure that thing's don't get out of control and pose a danger to them or their friends. I would think that this crew would also gather armor and resources themselves in case they ever needed it, having them appear in faction armor early on, but later on Diego upgrading to something a bit more protective and less recognizable after he effectively gets barred from the Old Camp makes sense. He starts a shadow, but ends something very different, and it doesn't really make sense for him to continue wearing the same armor, especially when they could likely steal something way better, later on in the story. It was limited by the art asset's at the time, and G2 was really all about recognition, so they could definitely do something unique with his design later in the game. But I do agree with you that initially you should be able to recognize the social hierarchy from the design of the armor's (the actual concept design given for some updated versions is pretty cool though).
What the remake does badly is that it accelerates what should be a slow burn plot. Diego meets you, seems like a nice guy because he helps you out (principally because you owe will him favours later on), and teaches you the basic rules of the Old Camp, while also giving you some basic training in Shadow skills. It's only later on we find out he's part of some inter-faction gang of misfit's who all get together like a very poorly trained intelligence agency haha.
I've always see Diego's portrayal as intending to get across the fact that he's a loveable rogue, more in line with someone like Jasper in Enderal (which I'm currently replaying) who is very affable and helps you out but in a way that benefits them in the long run. The initial relationship is transactional, but you get along well, go through some shit, and eventually end up becoming friends instead of just using each other. This extends to his gang as well, who you meet along the way and also befriend, to the point you are sort of an honorary member in G2. You have to really let your imagination fill this in during G1 though, because dialog is sparse, the English dub isn't that great at conveying the original intention for the characters (like Gomez sounding like a lunatic instead of calm and quiet, almost bored of you, but with an edge that you shouldn't fuck with him).
I think the major issue is that trying to actually modernize the story is difficult because the basis is very sparse. This isn't the right direction for the character so early, so really I hope they just extend the character development out. Let Diego be a loveable rogue, but have him appear more normal and subdued until later when shit hits the fan.

The reason Gothic was so awesome was because it never tried to desperately be cool. Modern games seem to have this low self-esteem issue and most of the effort seems to have gone into trying to be cool instead of trying to make a good game. I had an exactly same thought! It really DOES feel like whoever is responsible for the writing and the core game design hasn't even understood and experienced what the original Gothic was. Why change the main quest, for instance, so radically that it doesn't make too much sense? And yes, almost every damn NPC is nice, even Bloodwyn - you know, that asshole who will do anything to make your life harder in the Old Camp if you don't pay him up - is stationed in the middle of bloody nowhere, and he is just the OPPOSITE of what he even supposed to be! Like Bullit, he is a cutthroat at his core, and loves his power too. But in here? He's none of that. At all.
I probably would've agreed more to making some cool side quests that reinforce that atmosphere of the penal colony. For example: what is the story behind the guy who hides out in the cave, near the Old Camp (the one that requires a bit of climbing to get to)? Or Grimes, for that matter. In the original game, you can choose to forgive him, but what exactly CAN you make him do (or WILL he do)? Will he stab you again? Now something like that would actually be cool and add on more to the game's atmosphere. At least, far more than what the demo has.

@@Mithilius Not just visual storytelling, but storytelling in general. In written literature, for instance, you want to use language in such a way as to paint a scene that actively depicts a character's emotional state rather than simply declaring their emotions to the reader. Compare, for instance, the writing in these two examples I've just come up with:
*- Example 1:* "He anxiously reached out for the door handle feeling scared to actually open it. After a moment's pause, he collected himself and opened the door."
*- Example 2:* "His hand trembled as he reached for the door, pausing as his fingertips lighted on the edge of the levered handle before letting his grip clamp down around it, his hands dry and clammy against the cold metal of the handle, but still hesitating to push down to open the door. He could feel his heart beating in his throat, blood pulsing through his fingertips and reverberating through the door handle into the very wood of the door itself, making his heartbeat sound almost as if someone were thumping lightly on the other side of the door with the soft part of a closed fist. Or maybe that was just his hand still trembling against the handle, bumping the door ever so slightly in its frame. He couldn't be sure. He looked down at his hand and noticed his knuckles beginning to turn white, the blood diverting around his knuckles like white water rapids crashing around rocks in a stream. He hadn't even realized he was gripping the handle so tightly. He took a deep breath, exhaled, and relaxed the muscles in his arm, allowing it to rest almost limply on top of the door handle. A bead of sweat dripped down his forehead and into his eyebrow, which he wiped away with his free hand and slung onto the floor. With a deep gulp to try to push his heart back down into his chest, he closed his eyes, pressed down on the levered handle, and pushed the door open."
They both convey the exact same thing story-wise -- a guy is scared to open a door -- but the first example merely _tells_ us that the character is scared, while the second example _shows_ us he's scared without ever using a single adjective like "scared" or "frightened" or "nervous" or "anxious" to convey that emotional state. It also conjures an actual scene that you can visualize in your head with fairly vivid descriptions of the action happening as he hesitates to open the door, and is therefore far more interesting and engaging to read than the first example. I'm pretty sure the "show, don't tell" mantra actually originated from written media because the "tell" portion is the author literally telling you something in their narration, as opposed to showing you a scene and letting you come to your own conclusions. That principle, of course, applies to video games as well, as Ronnie Nimer has already indicated; it's far more effective for a game to make you feel like the world is dangerous through your own actions and experiences as opposed to merely having a character tell you that it's dangerous.

This is absolutely precise, the remakers should watch this video many times over and take it as base stone - like Csaba said. I am a long years Gothic Veteran, and this video literally speaks out of my soul. It is very important to keep to the Original. 20 years ago, Gohtic was made to every possible perfection that its age allowed. At the time they could not make a game too large (1GB) because it would be costly and there were other things to consider back then. Today we have all the technology we need to make graphics and enlarge the world to catch up to this LEGENDARY GAME, and what do we do? F**k up the thing that made Gothic, well Gothic!
When I hear Bloodwyn I imagine a scar-faced guy who extorted money outta me the moment he met me (I hated him the moment I saw him, but I knew I couldn't go against him). Now I see guy in a helmet who doesn't really scare me. When I hear Diego I imagine a cunning character, with his typical look, who made me think he is clever enough to cheat money into his pockets, but would still be able to beat me up for a letter to Fire Mages. The way he looks now makes me think like: What is this french mustache guy with fancy cord and totally friendly like behaviour got to do with that fox Diego whose high-esteem in his camp saved my ass from a bully guard?!!!
If the remakers are really waiting for feeedback hear this out: Don't make-over the good things that were done in Gothic. Expand upon that which Piranha Bytes didn't have time to do.
Placing meat to lure animals, squashing meatbugs, enlarging the world, making world- immersive interactions for player present - Easily said Take that world, re-make graphics, build it bigger add quests that feel like they belong to the world, make it possible for players to do the liitle things all NPCs can do(piss, smoke, play lute, drink alcohol) doable and for INNOS' SAKE don't make that hero a schysophrenic. And to the soundtrack: Get Kairo to help you, that Music he made was a Masterpiece I have been listening to for years and it 100% resonated with the world i was seeing around me. We are Gothic fans, we were already prepared we would never see Gothic Remake like ever... Now that you are making it possible, take even 5 years to finish it, but do it right. WE LOVE GOTHIC and now that we know, we will wait all the time it takes to replay this Grand Creation of an RPG perfected.
With all sincerity, a Gothic Veteran.

Agreed. The very beauty of Gothic was that it completely broke away from the Marty Stue-ism of many earlier (and later) games where you were the Prophecised Hero from the get-go. You were a nobody who had to prove himself, not because you had good friends, but because you had a lot of hardened contenders. It was a dirty, dark, and bitter world in which survival was as much about playing a dirty game (like beating up those weaker than you) as about doing what you thought was right. You, not the game.

I remember stumbling upon a broken gate, while exploring the colony in Gothic I. The opening mechanism was jammed, but luckily I had two scrolls that could turn me to a beetle - just so I could squeeze under the gate and cross it, even though I was not supposed to at this part of the story. All of sudden, hordes of orks came out running at me from the myst. Since I managed to build up quite a strong character at this point, I just killed them all. If you played the game you know, that the gate was an entrance to an ork city. Wearing Ulu-Mulu, which you acquire after completing a loong quest, you are not supposed to be attacked. The shaman even tells you that you wouldn't stand a chance against all the orks. Oh well. Funny part is that after decimating entire ork population of that city, you were then still supposed get ulu-mulu anyway. And it's all because game let me explore the world on my own terms - like any game goddamn should.
I have a strong feeling this remake would kill such treats for a standard, linear playthrough.

Well, you hit just about everything on the head.
    Except one thing: Art Design
Art design is what made the first Gothic an instant classic for me.
I'll start with Armor, being my favorite. Armor in Gothic was realistic yet unique, and it told a story itself. The old camp guards used the original armor of the garrison that was a complex composite armor of plates and gambeson/brigandine, the shadows below them made a cobbled together imitation. The Sect, with their strong economy and organized structure, forged their own templar armor and wove novice and guru robes with skill and artistry. And the New Camp mercs hammered out crude yet effective plates of magic ore, while rouges made do with outfits made from the hides of the local wildlife.
In the remake the little outfits we see have the same sin of design that I hate seeing, most famously in games like Dark souls and The Witcher: One half of the aromr is an almost 1:1 recreation of real world armor, the other half looks fucking retarded. There's some clear inspiration I can see with color schemes and overall layout, but it really doesn't cut it for me. The armor of most of the guards is visually bland and too conservative, and the shadows get it too, which contradicts the implied lore as I said above. Bloodwyn's armor is just a fucking mess of over-designed fantasy puke. While I think Diego deserves a unique outfit, how exactly does he have such fancy duds in a PRISON? And the rookie's... things he wears is visual diarrhea. It's all over the goddamn place.
Creature design in Gothic, with some exceptions (wolves being real world creatures and the generic harpy design), was unique and interesting to look at, rivaling games like Morrowind. The remake has too few creatures to judge the design fully, as wolves are wolves, and meatbugs are, well, bugs. The Snapper/Scavenger is a problem though. The designs actually look good, but the scavenger looks like it should be a snapper, and the snapper actually a dragon snapper or razor. I only hope that these are placeholders for now. I miss my giant chicken-hornbill-stork mashup scavengers.
Weapons... weapons are alright, but fuck that thing Bloodwyn has.
Lastly, nice that blueberries are still inexplicably red, love the throwback. Also Bloodwyn is black now for some reason, but whatever.

Gothic is unique. The only way this could work is to follow what they did to Shadow of the Colossus, and only touch the graphic engine. Any other change and the original feeling and what Gothic represented will be lost. No point trying to resurrect this series if they’re gonna try to appeal to “modern gamers”.
The fact that they try to resurrect Gothic, shows to me that they know how good this game was, so why even try to change it? Just to turn it into another generic game that no one will play? Might as well make a new game all together, if they’re not gonna stick to the original design philosophy.
You took the risk to go after Gothic because you know how good it was and you see the potential in it. Now go all in, and take the risk to keep the original hardcore design philosophy and atmosphere and I bet you that the people will love it.

It also makes no sense for any of the camps to destroy the exchange place in general. It means no new potential members (and all 3 camps are looking for members) and no supplies in general. In addition to hunting and gathering rice, the New Camp relies on raiding the Old Camp's caravans to keep supplied while the Brotherhood relies on trading with the Old Camp. The exchange place is what keeps that economy going because the Old Camp is the only one directly trading with the King. But in general, that intro just sucks because it's so overly explosive and cinematic, which makes it feel like bootleg Uncharted. If this is what their reimagining looks like, I don't want it.
The Beliar shrine would be nice if they put it in a place like the previously empty orc coliseum (where the swamp dragon settles in Gothic 2). Putting it between the exchange place and the abandoned mine just looks strange and out of place.

One of the most important things in Gothic for me personally was it's difficulty level/progression system combined with freedom of movement, constrained mainly by mobs you can't kill yet, not by some closed gates and other kinds of barriers.
Gothic was about finding your way and I really, really liked it.
"Well, fuck, I can't do this quest yet, I can't explore this cave yet, may be I will find something useful in here? May be a useful scroll or some EXP? Let's check it out!"
This also did a great job at showing player his progress, like, introducing a new player to a strong enemy that oneshots him. Throughout the game player will make his OWN decision to revisit the place to check out whether or not he is capable of dealing with said enemy.

I'd say I agree with you on this. Gothic 1 and 2 still hold up tremendously well today because a lot of their design elements are timelessly classic. The only real issue (besides getting the games to run on modern Operating Systems, which seems to work for most people with SystemPack/PlayerKit/etc)) is the idiosyncratic controls, which were weird even for their time, and the dated graphical quality, which even still doesn't look bad by any means, even in 2020. Gothic 3, on the other hand, was basically a train wreck and none of PB's lofty ideas got fully implemented in the version of the game that got released. So really, you're right -- Gothic 3 is the one that would really benefit from a remake.

Gothic always felt like a puzzle game to me. Mostly because like a puzzle game, you are not told explicitly where to walk or go, but instead slowly find new ideas are concepts to help tackle further challenges. The tower at the start of Gothic 2 contains books, items containers, chest and key and a shrine; as well as an NPC to talk to and a sheep outside to kill. The only problems these games have now is the strange control scheme and perhaps a lack of teaching about the janky combat. Perhaps adding more books for the player to read in-game (no one has game manuals anymore) to explain some ideas would be a good idea - rather than filling the screen with HUD elements to direct your every move.
On the point about invisible barriers - Gothic's movement system was so liberal. Your character would squeeze between crates and the wall to get into spaces that a real human could - just not a video-game character.
Damn are those new mountains shiny. It's like they are permanently wet. I have to say the new look is actually horrible and noisy.

When I see something as awful as this remake teaser I'm too overwhelmed by negative thoughts and experience I'm having to formulate my opinion in a coherent manner. I just give up because I don't have enough emotional strentgh to take it piece by piece and discuss. It's just overall the most awful gothic remake I could ever think off. And it's one of my very favorite game and I played lots of classic game in my time. So, thank you for making this video for people like us who see this remake for what it is. They think they can fool everybody and make money. Maybe they will earn something from this, buy they're not fooling us. It's an insult to any gothic fan, to any true gamer, to any reasonable person.
And no, they will not listen to anyone's opinion. They did EVERYTHING wrong, they can't just remake this whole mess they created. If they could they wouldn't have done it in the first place.

I completely agree. Despite the seemingly good-natured gesture of giving a free demo and asking for feedback, they are so, SO far off the mark that I cannot realistically expect anything close to a worthy 're-imagining.'
It's such an odd move, since re-making a 20 year old game would obviously be to cater to its actual fanbase (since why would people care about some game series they have no familiarity with?), but then what we're given has basically nothing to do with it.

I'm so glad you made this and I hope they see this and listen. I played the remake teaser today and just... god, no, please don't ruin my favorite game of all time with *this*. I hate to be rude or doom and gloomy but the fundamental design philosophies of the remake are all wrong and miss the mark entirely. You hit the nail on the head on every single point and I'd rather this game NOT get made than made as it is, now. I have nothing but respect for them putting this out to gauge how we feel about it. It takes a lot of guts to do that and say like "Hey this is something we wanted to try, let us know what you think" - i do respect that and I wish more dev's did that. Having said that, though, what they've created is honestly borderline sacrilegious to what the gothic series means to me.

  • @deeliriyum
    @deeliriyum 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I always wanted a revamped and meaningful version of Gothic fighting system. So I had years and years to think about it. Target locking should go because it doesn't make any sense to swing a twohander and hit only one enemy so all weapon swings would be CLEAVE damage. Because of it damage balance should be counted in or number of enemies thrown at you.
    WSAD = Movement
WSAD + Hold Left Click = Directional attacks
WSAD + Hold Right Click = Directional blocks
If done right this would retain the feel of old combat with swing combos and add an extra layer of complexity in terms of protection. Gothic had a pretty fast weapon animations, so maybe slow them down just a tiny bit so that player can SEE the direction the attack is coming from and react appropriately. Maybe give player A+LC and D+LC weapon swings at first and have them learn W+LC and S+LC thrusts later if you really want to be gentle.

I finished Gothic 1 about 2 weeks ago and I loved every minute of it. Took me about 26 hours. Then I tried the P.T. of the remake and I couldn't even bring myself to finish the 1 HOUR long experience! To be honest it was a boring mediocre modern game and I absolutely HATED the combat system. I couldn't even last a couple of minutes in demo. The character wouldn't shut up, everything was over-dramatized and theatrical. This Gothic remake is obviously intended to bring in wider audience, which is contrary imo to the character of original game.

Adri, the original Gothic one is an acquired taste - it is an early game in the genre, and the controls are somewhat clunky for modern standards, but damn is it worth it! One of my absolute favorite games (Gothic 2, that has a bit better controls is one of the contenders). You can play Gothic 2 without playing the first game by the way, if controls are huge problem for you. :-)

@@krdxz The BEST part about Gothic 1's beginning is that the character kinda thinks he's big man on campus mouthing off to the judge(which also is relatable in a way) and then immediately gets beaten up by Bullit, establishing that you're NOBODY. You're not even a human, you're just a pile of shit.
Also the original game was intended for a wide audience and it got it. • @TheNocturnalRambler
      @TheNocturnalRambler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yeah, that's something I neglected to mention in the review. When I replayed the teaser, it was pretty annoying not being able to skip cutscenes (because I'd already seen them) or skip past lines of dialogue (because I could read faster than the NPC's (especially Diego) spoke). My first time fighting Sarus was brutal, for instance, because the game auto-saves before the cutscene where he confronts you, and after dying a bunch of times while trying to figure out and experiment with the combat system I had to sit through that cutscene each, and every, single, time.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure how easy skippable dialogue is to implement because they seem to have a lot of cinematic camera angles and animations with characters moving all over the place. I don't know how well the engine can handle characters "fast-forwarding" instantly to a new position and pose, and that would surely be more distracting/immersion-breaking than simply letting the dialogue play out, unfortunately.

    Jesus, my man Nocturnal Rambler..
This is the first video I watched so I don't know about the others.
But your Information gathering in this one is top notch, I agree whole heartedly with your Review and Feedback.
When I played the Teaser, afew months ago.. I felt like something was lacking but I couldnt pinpoint my finger on it at all.. Afew slight things I could like the Markers, the OVERWHELMING Menus and Huds and that was it.. I felt like something felt off but I couldnt really.. tell what it was.
And then randomly your video popped up now in my Feed (Thank you, youtube) and I whole heartedly agree with your full on review, the Invisible Walls, how the game grabs you by both hands and puts shackles on you.. "Now go do that, and that.. Oh look, something is there.. GO up there!" and how quickly you get to certain things.. a better weapon, I remember I ran around in Gothic 1 with a Pickaxe for about 2 Hours before I found a Rusty Sword with 5 more damage.
And I will give THQ the benefit of the doubt that the Invisible walls are because its a Demo and doesnt want you to run around in an Undeveloped place.. because it's a demo.

I could never fully realize what made Gothic 1 and 2 so dear and appealing to me, why it felt different from other RPG's (often made by much, much bigger videogame companies with 10x the budget), why it felt so "alive" and made me feel like I was actually in there, something I've yet to experience to that extent with any other game. Thanks for pointing out so clearly what made those games so great.
I believe there can be no proper Gothic remake if anyone other than Piranha Bytes codes it. Nailing the atmosphere is no easy task, and choosing to embrace the "freedom at your own risk" approach is, sadly, unwise and risky from a purely commerical standpoint. My hope is that they will listen to the community of long-time fans of the saga instead of completely tearing apart what made Gothic stand out from other games in the hope of making more money off of new players that will find themselves playing a casual, unoriginal and poorly designed RPG. Basically a new chapter to that disgusting piece of garbage they called "ArcaniA: Gothic 4".

Honestly, I appreciate that an effort is being made to an underappreciated series. I personally would like to see the elements of gothic with story characters and world building, difficulty and combat style of Dark Souls and the exploration, loot and dialogue options of skyrim. And for fuck sake change the voice acting. The dialogue delivery in this game is pretty fucking terrible. Granted G1 and 2 weren't perfect but its a lot better conpared to this. I swear the hero groaned so much after the michael bay cinematic...
A major part that played into immersion was the amount of dialogue you could choose when conversing with NPC's. Even being able to get hidden quests just by chatting to people. Not only that but every action you took did have an effect on the world. Seriously, the world of Gothic was much more lived in with NPC's shooting the shitwith other NPC's or casually standing around having a drink etc. What also made it more immersive was when the game kicked your teeth in and taunts you when you fuck up, causing you to think about your actions, whether to run or fight. This was especially true when your last save was 2 hours ago and didnt think to save. Modern game design has almost completly gutted any semblence of challange and intensity for those who get triggered by something being too hard.

After this demo I'm absolutely speechless: I don't really recognize anything. And I mean anything! Sure I remember who Diego is etc. but I don't really recognize him or anything else. Why: Because I dont feel it. I don't feel Gothic.

Brilliant, extensively detailed review, thank you so much! I really hope the developers heed your advice. To me, your most important piece of advice almost slipped by, squeezed in near the end, so I want to highlight it:
Without Kai Rozenkranz's music, even while playing the original Gothic, the game lost its charm. His music was, and still remains perfect. The qualities it brought to the game are crucial to Gothic's success as a remaster. This music still resonates within everyone who experienced the originals, more than purely for nostalgia. Hire Kai Rozenkranz to have the opportunity to update or remake his classics!
As a dedicated Gothic fan, this music is what keeps me coming back, more than anything else. Naturally the immersive gameplay design is crucial, but even long after the game is done and all the quests completed, even after decades apart, this music still echoes on within me, drawing me back into this world.

Combat should be like Gothic II with G1 controlset setting turned on and just polished out more. Gothic II made combat so smooth especially with strafing and blocking that you could solo single orcs just by skillfully strafing and blocking at low level with adept 1 handed skill.

Control scheme should be like Gothic 1 with option to simplifying it to Gothic II's(it just neede press of the action button without up arrow) and be fully consistent. For mouse they could try and finally use what majority of mice have with is 2 side buttons for left and right swiping left for forward combo and right for block, instead of just having what GII has when you use mouse.

@@Kacpa2 Get out of the cave, nobody would play this fucking game with G1 controls, are you having a seizure ?
Those controls were OK for early 00s, but that's it. To have such controls in 2020 would be madness, and I can imagine how many negative reviews would have, because of it.
Risen 1 combat was fine...but I am not sure if would work in 2020 either. This...stand-in-place in order to attack is stupid and outdated.

I would like to see it remade IF and I mean IF they will listen to the feedback and do it right.

It is possible it just needs real fans who truly understand and love Gothic. Obviously this remake has no hope as anyone can tell from only the first 5 minutes.

@@Lienhardismus Idk. I would say the fact that they are wanting feedback from the fan base gives it hope; as long as they listen to what people are saying.
