I've heard and seen a pic or 2 of the '5k' version, but IMHO there is no way they could have even made something that would do 5k in the size of the case that I had seen in the pics.
Hello sir FlatFoot 442 have the same exact amp trying to find whatever is called I'm not for sure but the plate the knob and the ceramic piece behind it with the metal blades I'm needing one of those I need to know what it is and where to find one
I have an XL 250 that has stopped keying if i manually engage the relays it operates as it should. I'm not sure where to start on troubleshooting the key detection circuit.
I always start with the keying transistor. I think the Varmints used 2 in a Darlington configuration. However, one of my Varmints gave me a hard time with the keying circuit which was very hard to get to, so I replaced the whole keying circuit with the Nomad Radio keying circuit.
The problem with those amplifiers in that era is that they were under cooled That's not even close to near enough. The best thing that you can do is take the lid off of it and run it that way and run fans on it above it
That's kinda typical for all the big multi tube amps from back in that era. Most have a single little open frame fan. Example, look at the 10 tube Galaxy 2000. I think this amp with the blower pulling the hot air out isn't too bad. However, I do agree that pretty much all these big bad multi sweep tube amps would benefit greatly from more cooling. Same for the big bad Tram D201 radio. It's main problem is too much heat.
Don't see a lot of them these days. Cool to see one in nice shape aside from weak tubes.
Thanks.
Picked up 1 today. Going to need alot of scrubbing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge sir
Glad to help
Thats a nice clean Varmit right there. My cousin had the 5K version , needless to say he was the talk of the town in Crowley , Louisiana

Very nice. Wish I could get a hold of something like that.
all it takes is $$$
@@tramdr yes sir I know. Just ain't got none right now. Family and kids first. Lol

that piece is a variable capacitor. I'm not sure which one you are speaking of specifically as it has 3 of them in it.
Interesting coil in the traces.
Agreed.
I'd like to contact you about some work and stuff related. Are you listed?
I don't do others. I am not listed.
I have the Tx1000 and the LX1000 I love them just mine are a little dirty .lol
You are not the first to have some dirty ones LOL.

@@tramdr I downloaded what looks like a hand written schematic but it's not very helpful there's no guid section or break down of each section.
@@tramdr I forgot to ask what was the model number for the nomad keying circuit board you used and did it last for you?
Thanks for your reply.
This is the one I got from Nomad. Well, actually I bought a 5 pack from him and have used four already with no problems. www.ebay.com/itm/115811469907

👏👏👍
Thanks.
That fan looks awful close to the metal shielding. 😮
Too many vales to replace if you have to. But it is cool.
wait until I get to my D+A Warrior coming up.
Flat as a pancake
Awww, you hurt its feelings.
