fixing a RATTLING serpentine belt tensioner by “changing STRETCHED out belt” 18t audi volkswagen

  • The rattling serpentine belt tensioner might have to do with the stretched out belt. It could be the tensioner itself. It’s really common that when the belt stretches the tensioner is not able to stay tight enough and there’s a rattling noise. In this video we show how to make sure the tensioner is in good shape and show how the belt can stretch

    exactly what my truck is doing - I thought it was the tensioner because it was bouncing around just like you showed in your video - thank you!

    I’ve been searching for this rattle in my Tacoma for about 6 months now….you just solved it for me! toyota sold me a belt that was supposed to supersede my old one and it worked for about a year but is now making the same noise as you described…..swapped the belt and the noise is gone! Much thanks.

    This is exactly the noise my HR-V had for a solid three years. They replaced the belt because it was due and it immediately cured it.

    What are the chances that there are some bearings that need to be oiled? I just had the serpentine belt replaced on two of my cars and one of them has a squealing like the tensioning is off. The squealing was really bad when it was really cold and lasted for almost a minute. And now it happens periodically when I start the car. My other one has a little bit of the rattling noise coming from the area. Both were done by the same mechanic. Who is no longer my mechanic because of this. Not sure if it’s just bad luck or if he’s just shit at tensioning.

    This confirms my issue. But mines the timing belt tensioner. Started making a noise after 24 hours of being fitted. The roller on the tensioner has in and out movment and causing the belt to be out of alignment and causing that ticking sound. Used a brand new gates kit as well. Must be faulty. Ill buy with the genuine GM part.

      I have exactly the same problem. I bought gates parts and now its ratteling. How did you solve it

    Hey there,
    Could you help me out? I have recently replaced my timing belt, pulley's and tensioner and now when I start the car I get an initial rattle after which it sounds okay. Also when the car shuds a bit when I change a gear too fast it makes the same clunky rattling noise. I was thinking it would be the tensioner as I haven't touched anything else. It's brand new, as are the pulley's and belt.

      Oh and I also replaced the accessory belt and the tensioner.

      So what happened? Is it still rattling?

    • @eleasaralanis9592
      @eleasaralanis9592 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@synaptic8471 it was the belt. It was a little longer, got it at autozone. Continental brand. I had noticed that the tensioner was lower than usual. With the new belt i got at oreillys, the tensioner sat more up and the very loud rattling was gone. I hadnt put much attention to the Continental belt as the cause because it was new, but yea it was the belt

    Same problem. New belt, tensioner, and pulleys. Note to self - never buy cheapest parts off rock auto. Not worth saving 30 bucks to have to go back in there.

    • @livefree6878
      @livefree6878  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      An old tensioner can make that sound as well. If you take the belt off and the tensioner is very solid, chances are it’s not the tensioner. When the belt stretches out he can rattle. This was our case this time

  • @sickfoo5506
    @sickfoo5506 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just put a new belt and i still get the sound.. i replaced the tensioner less than 6 months ago.. i had the engine replaced and not sure if it could be faulty or damaged in the process.. its the exact same sound though

      maybe replace the belt with the wrong size. maybe the wrong size was in their previously. or maybe a wrong size aftermarket pulley has been installed. measure everything

    • @sickfoo5506
      @sickfoo5506 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Kenneth Fowler for me it was a best case scenario in my motor mounts. As soon as I replaced them I was smooth as butter..
