lets not forget that GT3 is way more cheaper than GTE. To make motorsports survive there need to be lower costs for the teams besides factory teams that will also struggle in the current envrionment budgetwise.
Most of the time, old race cars go to a museum, will be sold to private collectors or kept by the team as a showcar. Sometimes these cars will be used in historic raceseries after a few years.

GT3 shares more similarities with the roadcar version while GTE allows for more modifications in for exemple aero. But what probably is the deciding factor for the rule change, is the lower cost of GT3 cars for teams compared to GTE cars.

the cars have lost touch with their base models.
That should change with the rule change to GT3 cars :)
