  • A grandmother reveals a secret after a family dinner.
THE BOOK OF RUTH is used with permission from Chen Drachman. Learn more at thebookofruthfilm.com.
Ruth is getting a visit from her daughter and grandchildren, gathering together for Passover. It's a warm, loving celebration, full of food, conversation and family. But her granddaughter Lizzy has something she wants to discuss.
Lizzy knows something about her grandmother, something that could change the cultural fabric of the world. But when she tries to bring it up, Ruth wriggles out of the conversation -- until she realizes she can't fool her smart granddaughter anymore. What follows is the surfacing of a long-held family secret, a woman confronting the pain of her past and a meditation on what being our true selves really means.
Directed by Becca Roth from a script by Chen Drachman (who also plays Lizzy), the film begins in a flurry of activity and chatter, with loving matriarch Ruth at the center of it all. It's clear she's raised a kind, warm-hearted family, and even the traditions at dinner are infused with humor and connection. This family gathering is captured with simple but effective naturalistic camerawork, which gives us a sense of life unfurling and of the life's richness and bounty that Ruth has created for herself. As viewers, we're nestled right at the heart of this family's life, and we feel the love, belonging and connection alongside its members.
But the deft storytelling places small clues and hints that something is off, especially in the form of TV and radio reports that Anne Frank and her sister Margot died earlier than previously reported. Ruth's reactions to these are picked up on by Lizzy, who presses her grandmother on something that she's long wondered about. At first, Ruth denies it. But later she confesses her truth.
Actor Tovah Feldshuh -- a Broadway star with four Tony nominations under her belt -- is extraordinary as Ruth reveals her truth, evincing a lifetime of secrecy, sadness and resilience in one conversation. But what's truly infectious about her is her commitment to her own contentment and peace -- and her understanding of what part of her story means to the larger world.
THE BOOK OF RUTH is essentially a "what if" story, a poignant imagining of a girl who survived the worst and managed to thrive in a new life. But in Ruth's explanation to Lizzy, it's also a meditation on the power of stories themselves, and the role they play in history, hope and remembrance. The idea that an iconic symbol associated with the Holocaust and its horrors actually survived in secret is a heart-tugging fantasy for a historical figure that has become so beloved for her intelligence, honesty and authenticity, and still mourned for her tragic ending. But it also speaks to the other legacy of Anne Frank's life: as a representation of human potential. That she could survive and go on to live an ordinary yet beautifully rich and full life -- rather than be cut down by human evil and depraved repression -- touches on what was lost for so many in the Holocaust: a future with families, gathering and love that endures throughout the generations.

It never ceases to amaze me the way some of these brilliant filmmakers can layer so much meaning into such small segments of screen time. Including credits, that was just over 14 minutes in length. During those 14 minutes, I was mystified, I identified, I became fond of a family and was awed by the tenderness of their interactions, I was offered the possibility of an alternative ending to an immortal tragedy, I had that alternative confirmed, I sat with that brilliant young woman next to her grandmother and we argued that she should tell the world of her history-defying truth. I listened to her grandmother justify her choice to leave history be and recognized the truth that for every one of her, there were countless others who did meet a tragic ending like that of Ms. Frank. I felt the old woman's love of nature and the solace it brings her. I was internally illuminated by her identification of nature with infinity. I accepted the wise, old woman's choice with Lizzy and was left with the grandmother, Ruth, outside, on the bench.
And then came the phone call.
That's a lot. That's a lot of a lot. I'm so grateful to have been afforded the opportunity to see this film.

It starts with the parents forcing their children to adhere to traditions, often against a child's will. By today's standards that is regarded as oppressive and counter productive to the growth of the child's individuality. But in my case as with my siblings, we eventually grew to love the traditions and the traditions, ironically, gave us a cultural individuality apart from the bland uni-culture which dominates a great deal of North American families

“ The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quite alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. As longs as this exists, and it certainly always will, I know that then there will always be comfort for every sorrow, whatever the circumstances may be. And I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles ” - Anne Frank

"The thing about hatred, every time you think it is a thing of the past..." if Anne Frank is really out there somewhere let her be. She is the symbol of eternal hope that one day love will conquer all!

I've never heard of Anne Frank before, so I was a little lost until halfway through the movie, but when she mentioned the name I paused and went to google it, came across the Anne Frank House website and read the story, now suddenly everything in this video makes sense.

In France we read at high school the diary of Anne Franck. I visited her hidden room in the house in Amsterdam, that was very emotional...

Her book was required reading in high school. I can remember to this day the English teacher that assigned it and how powerful that book was for me. I visited the Holocaust Memorial Museum here in Wash DC and I was humbled & wanted to cry for all those who suffered & their families.

Humans place great faith in symbols, so it's understandable why anonymity was desired here.
It's not about the person, it's about the message.
    Brilliant little story.❤

It's funny how things that we know can seem so natural to us, we can't imagine anyone not knowing the same things.
And when we say, "Oh, everyone knows that," of course we are using hyperbole. Not EVERY one knows anything.

basically many of us are anne franks - living quiet hidden lives with hearts filled with so much love for anything able to understand the deepness of that love - how do I know this? where did this movie come from and where have all these comments come from - bless all you anne franks who remain hidden except in my heart. and in your own heart as well - remember we come from the same ocean and will always be of the same essence.
