  • A woman reports sexual harassment at work.
    DOUBLESPEAK is used with permission from Hazel McKibbin. Learn more at hazelmckibbin.com.
    Emma has been working at a company for some time, dealing with continual harassment by an older superior named Peter. She has finally lodged a complaint against him and now is due to hear the results of her company's investigation.
    But the face-to-face meeting quickly veers from a degree of civility to one where Emma finds her original testimony and evidence distorted, picked apart or prevaricated by the company's representative. Emma's case hangs in the balance -- but more importantly, so does her sense of security.
    This compact yet powerful dramatic short -- written and directed by Hazel McKibbin and produced by Stephanie Fine -- has very relevant themes of sexual harassment at its center, but it is also essentially a conversation. As the action unfolds, viewers quickly realize that the conversation is not a mutual back-and-forth, but a lopsided dynamic skewed in favor of a company trying to protect itself versus a young worker trying to be heard and validated.
    With a title about language and a structure of a two-hander, the storytelling leans heavily on excellent writing, which was heavily based on McKibbin's own experiences with reporting sexual harassment. Language and communication are what Emma presents as evidence of her harassment; language is also one of the ways that she has been harassed. And sadly, the sharp, incisive dialogue shows how language can take a truth and twist, obscure and wrap it in ambiguities, to the point of meaninglessness and distress.
    The language of the writing is deft, agile and slippery in how it inflicts its own violence upon Emma, but the visual approach is clear, deliberate and powerfully lucid, with coolly clear tones and a sense of composition that is almost abstract in its attention to the small but telling detail. Every camera movement emphasizes the shifting of power in the room, and the editing captures the small gestures and unspoken behavior that reveals the real agendas at work in the meeting.
    Lead actor Angela Wong Carbone's understated yet wrenching performance does the important job of bringing viewers into the subtext of the film, playing out her unspoken pain and disappointment as her trauma is essentially invalidated, and she's rendered powerless and unimportant, both by the process and by key betrayals during her meeting. Like the rest of the film, there are no melodramatics, but instead, the wrenching portrayal of someone having to swallow their voice, again and again and again.
    DOUBLESPEAK offers an intimate snapshot into one woman's experience of reporting harassment, but it is also as much about process and systems as about Emma's individual story. Emma is caught in a system and dynamic in which she is just a small part, and it is this system that sets up the rules, as well as the checks and balances on them when they're broken. Sadly, it is a system more concerned with protecting itself, discrediting those that question it, and offering empty promises and apologies. Its masterful last scene is both a marvel of restraint and a chilling evocation of the price paid for this -- which is almost always paid by those already at a disadvantage in the system.

    I once worked with a colleague who was a victim of the sexual harassment in the workplace. Took her over a year to make it known. It didn't help and she ended up leaving anyway. The company claimed insufficient evidence to prove her claims... they said the same things here... "You took too long to come forward", "You won't work with him, unless your departments need to collaborate". blah blah...
    In the end it was easy to see that the male was invincible in the case because he was a very valuable employee with a 15 year service record and she was just moved from intern to permanent less than 2 year service.

    The most depressing thing in the short film was the part where some people in the comments don't believe she was harassed even if it so clear by her chat with the mother and her reaction at the end, and it even says so in the video description!
    But since they don't clearly witnessed the scenes (well, there were some flashbacks to be honest), they don't acknowledge it. Just like in real life!

      Your Majesty You silly fool. Everyone is fully aware by now, America in general no longer relies on facts or evidence. Heresy, semantics and emotion; that is what we use to determine guilt. “Logic? Get that out of my newsroom, he was an unarmed individual wrongfully killed by law enforcement. What? He disarmed an officer of his taser and the officer feared if given the chance he’d take the gun? Nonsense...police brutality- no racism, because from this incident and the inferred “facts” we gathered regarding the situation we may confidently say this officer is guilty of a hate crime.” Those of us whom would like to be made aware of the full fact based story are apparently the ‘victim blamers’. Oh how the blind sheep are cursed.

    • @seeigecannon
      @seeigecannon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The meta conversation in the comments is actually seems to be pretty well in line with corporate America. Even in big cases like Weinstien and Cosby you have people asking why they didn't say something sooner, or they should have just quit, or complain how with how bad Me Too has gotten that "we can't even hug our female coworkers anymore without fear".
      Corporate America would quickly become a lot better if everybody followed societal rules on not touching people without their permission or talking about the 'great rack' that the office worker has.

    • @jamesthedouche1960
      @jamesthedouche1960 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      seeigecannon You say that as if the very few societal rules we still have are adequately established. The rules you reference in actuality were once referred to as “societal norms”, the very same norms that many are opposed to now in their entirety. Screw determining what parts were okay and what parts were wrong, let us destroy the entire system and try to rewrite it from the ground up at the same time. Spoiler; it won’t and can not work, that isn’t how civilizations evolve. You don’t just start a new regime by saying all the old did was wrong; or at the very least you only say it publicly to gain the blind loyalty of the populous. As much as you hate to admit it (privately that is), there was some good to come out of the pre-existing system (whatever it may have been); therefore you are supposed to take that and expound upon it. Instead sensitivity has taken over and replaced logic, reasoning and general science. That is what we have today, that “consensual touch” you speak of can only be attained AFTER you ask for the suitable pronouns one responds too. For christ’s sake, if a woman drowns on the beach and you wish to revive her, you mustn’t bother with saving her life as priority (provided she responds to feminine pronouns); instead you must ask if she would like your assistance (good luck with that) then be sure to have a witness so she can’t claim sexual assault twenty years down the road. Granted the reasoning for these changes aren’t necessarily bad, the temporary solutions society has decided to cling to; however, are extreme.

I bottled it up for a year at that job, and when in a moment of weakness i told off my abusers with some vulgar language, they had me fired for it. I learned that day that "such is life" is a cruel reality. However, it is not the rule. Never allow yourself to be controlled by the way things are in life. life is cruel but not evil. Its cruelties are blind. I moved on from that time in my life and though the scar is still there, i never allow it to control me. My scars give me strength.

    Some of the comments in this section are disturbing. Women NEVER want to feel like prey, especially at work. If you make her feel like prey, you’re not only disrespecting her but you’re also disrespecting yourself. It’s about self esteem. Once a woman experiences uncomfortable behavior, she often tries to qualify or disqualify her own involvement in the incident first; she rarely has the audacity to think she is doing anything that alluring to warrant such a reaction. By the time a woman fully understands that it’s not her fault, it then takes courage to address the issue. Environments are hardly ever skewed in favor of professionalism or self control. I experienced a similar situation very recently. I’m learning to immediately and firmly state, “I’m not interested (in co-workers).” Also, aggressors are not always male.

    This was sad to watch. Emma is too nice and clearly scared to speak up. If you ever experience sexual harassment, make sure to record it via video and when they deny it, make sure to expose them all over social media. That’s the only way to get justice done because and unfortunately most of the time sexual harassments/assaults are not taken seriously and make sure to sue the company you work for.

  • @TiredButHardWorking
    @TiredButHardWorking 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    This unfortunately happens too often in the workplace. Companies disregard complaints unless they face legal liability. Another reality that exists in this situation is that sexual harassment is a very serious allegation that requires ppl to have direct evidence. False allegations occur when businesses believe any complaint without demanding evidence. If there is no evidence, then it's strictly a circumstance of he said / she said or whatever the dynamic is of ppl involved in the situation (men sexually harass other men; women sexually harass other women; women also sexually harass men).

    can't people realize that it's hard to open up about things like this because of the stigma. it's not that easy to just tell it to people since you're not sure about how they'll react and victim blaming is still a big issue these days plus the fact that it triggers you and your trauma. it takes a lot of time, courage and bravery that's why some people who experienced sexual harassment takes years to even open up about it.
