Nice review bro. I'm convinced the Action 4 is one of the best action cameras out there been using it for the last 4 months and love it. I always hated the look of gopro footage and the bugs and overheating. I only trust your reviews when it comes to cameras because most of these reviewers are fake and paid off by the big companies keep going bro you will rise above them eventually. Action 4 actually shares the same sensor as the Ace Pro, which is the ov48c. Like every flagship phone these days, in 4k recording, they use pixel-binding which basically makes it a 12mp sensor. But Ace Pro can also utilize the hi-res mode in 8k, photo, and zoom mod.

You have to sell your soul to get an Insta360 camera early. Jeven Dovey actually said in his review of the Insta360 go because the storage was limited and built in that you should buy 2 of them. It was pathetic.
Yep, you can lower the sharpness on it. Insta360 actually isn't pushing the 8K capabilities, one because they understand that more pixels doesn't automatically equal a better picture (they actually told me this), but also because it really serves two main purposes. The first is oversampled 4K for the normal image, and then a true 4K image when using the optical zoom (because it's cropping in on an 8K sensor). With the sharpness set to low, the Ace Pro actually looks silky smooth. The magnetic mount has a 1/4" mounting point on it, so no need for one on the actual camera body. You can get all the stuff you mentioned for less than you added it up to be by getting the Creator Edition.
Thats all nice but no 10-bit color,lens cant be changed,not so wide image,that screen will brake in time when opening and closing,ai is nice but didnt prove good in gopro.And does it overheat?Noone is talking about these things.And not to mention price compared to others lol

It wasn’t made for pros..tried color grading flat color and it just wasn’t cutting it Looks best in standard mode and pure video but again you can’t color grade it only lower colors that were already added..also the in camera sharpness is just too much even on low…didn’t think 10bit color was needed but I was wrong .. I’m not sure if they give us full 8K resolution just because it is a 8K sensor. They are using it for pixel binning. I saw some lowlight footage and to be honest, it was way better than GoPro and DJI. What I absolutely don’t like about the Action 4 is the unnatural body shape. When vlogging everyone looking so small and unnatural. That’s better on the ACE pro and also on the GoPro. Anyway, I totally agree with the over sharpened look of every action camera.

@@Bigcookfilms Exactly!! As well it should be better if it was 10 bit but people who color grade their footage from action cam videos represent a tiny amount of people. And when they color grade, they don't care that the quality of their videos loose a bit.
Cameras can have multiple uses you know lol. Action cams are the closest thing we have to "designed for vlogging" cameras out there. Only the DJI Pocket series can actually claim this. No cameras are designed for vlogging, despite the marketing hype.
If you have a GoPro 11/12 or Action 4, I don’t see a reason to switch. If you don’t, and this is your first action cam, go for it. There are a lot of exciting features that sets it apart and the low light capability is undeniable. I ordered one mainly as a car mount and for shooting Timelapse’s. Another feature that none of the reviewers even touched upon. Also didn’t hear anything about powering it over usb without battery.
7:49 Though I won't be getting one, I'm just glad that they kept swappable batteries for the thing. After the Go 3, I figured that Insta360 just gave up on batteries being replaceable.

You have your points which i agree though, but i think the dji action 4 and acepro are using the same sensor ifnot mistaken, dji is using pixel binding for better image quality and not utilizing the 8k capability most probably due to limits of processor.
I'm confused, you're saying that you would rather have a non usable night shot from GoPro at 30 frames then a usable night shot from Insta360 at 24 frames? lol But even with a smaller pixel size at a larger sensor it still is a better video result at the end of the day then the GoPro and slightly better then the DJI A4 with the 5 Nanometer cpu assist. I see these as improvements over the competitors. You're correct the AI effect stuff is gimmick but fun, Insta360 is targeting the social media content creators market there and it's not a deciding factor for me to consider this camera. I'm sorry, I can't agree with you that the GoPro's night view is 'acceptable'. The one thing no one is realizing is that the Ace Pro is the first gen "action camera" by Insta360, the X3 is just a beautiful camera with it's 360. The DJI Pocket 3 is a beautiful device, but it's not an action cam so redundant. GoPro has had 12 generations and to think that this first gen is pretty close if not better in some respect for feature, power, no over heating issue, quality night shot, if you want to talk about a company that's come to a halt in innovation, you might want to take a closer look at GoPro. I have all the brands, Sony, GoPro, DJI, Insta360, more action cameras then I need and tbh, I'm tired of GoPro, if not Insta360, my alternative would be DJI as I have their drones as well. That really put a bad taste in my mouth with DJI, the A2 was not a cheap device. I agree with the unnecessary megapixel count, but the low light footage looks incredible versus the others, even though the DJI has a sensor of the same size. Dynamic range is miles ahead on the Insta 360.
the only thing i took from all the launch 'reviews' was that the ace footage looked better in every single comparison vs the DJI, and WAY better than the gopro. don't even care about the 8k at all

Ok, here's my theory. The Ace Pro isn't done, but they didn't want to miss the holiday season and decided to ship it. They didn't want anyone really testing it, so they sent it to a bunch of TH-camr's who would play ball and do a soft review. Maybe they can turn it into something with a bunch of firmware updates?
Putting AI into anything, is like creating an app for everything. I'm a software-Engineer. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that people are so “simple” and “chilling” nowadays. You guys are remarkable. You accept the weirdest, unneeded and unnecessary crap the companies throw at you, inflating the price of a product artificially. Certainly, it makes me happy, and I'm not complaining because it creates more jobs for us in the It-Sector. But seriously, how many bitter red and blue pills do you guys intend to take? Why do I say this? Because as an engineer, I also have hobbies and I would rather not purchase products with an app and AI forced on me. Especially not in simple tools like a powerbank (Anker Prime) or a toothbrush etc.
The good news is somebody mention it's pixel binning sensor! And the cropped zoom feature is the 4k without pixel binning using only the smaller pixel.
FYI, for the 8k on these small sensors, the image is generated from a process called remosaicing, and the benefit of that is the sensor is actually truly a 4k (4000x3000) sensor, and sampling the 12mp image gets you the most accurate data. Quad beyer also allows you to 4x your max native iso by adding together the quad beyer subpixels (like the a7s3 does) All of this processing is done within the sensor so it doesn't consume any serious processing power. The 4k is not compromised in any way now that sensors are bsi, and the 8k while it isn't as good as native 8k could be, it's good enough that you can use it And ofc as other comments mentioned you can crop in and get a remosaiced 4k image with 2x crop if you want
Are the tiny lenses on action cams even enough to resolve anything above 4k? When you turn sharpenning totally off on gopro it is shockingly soft, and i'm fairly sure it's the same case for all of these action cams, if you shoot in raw on your phone you'll also notice how soft these tiny lenses really are.
@@definingslawek4731 yup, just because the image is soft doesnt mean the information is totally gone, its just less information than if it were sharper. What is crazy though is how much resolution you can actually squeeze from the tiny lenses, almost all of the "200 megapixel" phones get sharper from the remosaiced 200 megapixel than the native 12 megapixel the problem is the iso performance from using all of the tiny subpixels individually is really awful, but in good light? its still substantially better
I bought a Gopro12 hoping I'd like LOG and I do not. Also did not like the HDR profile. Standard-flat still best... Can you explain the 5.3k vs 4k line skiping you mentioned, tho? I always use 4k just because I assumed it gives the stabilization more room to work.
I'm happily using my GoPro Hero10, most of the time with Max Lens Mod, and the only two things I hate about it are its low light capabilities (basically unusable in the woods) and its stupid and slow menu. - Do you see any alternatives for me at the moment? Btw. I won't lie, I was impressed by the PureVideo mode of Insta360, however AI generally tend to make stuff up - would be interesting to look at the footage more closely.
I've been very happy with my gopro10. I use it for bike packing. It's amazingly smooth going over bumpy ground, looks great when the sun is out, it'scaptured sone amazingscenes and is good for talking to camera. Rugged and durable. But the low light footage is bearly usable. I've just brought a Sony zv1 which should make a nice supplement to my gear and can handle low light levels.
Genuine question here... the 8K 24 fps is silly... but isn't the 8K sensor useful for what they are calling "clarity zoom" where it uses the center 4K of the 8K to punch in without a real reduction in quality? obviously I don't know if an action cams small lens can resolve well enough for that even if the sensor is 8K, but from the early samples it still looks useful. that said the lack of LOG, 10bit, replaceable lens glass etc. hurts the camera.
Who cares about that if you're not in focus? You need a close focusing filter, then anything you zoom on later will be blurry. It can come in handy, but it's not revolutionary.

The lack of close focus you note in the camera... wouldn't that only get worse if you give it a 1 inch sensor and fixed aperture like you suggest as real changes it could make? Your latest video on the Pocket 3 mentions it might be "too blurry" sometimes... wouldn't the same issue exist in an action cam with a 1 inch sensor AND be worse because action cams are more often used for taking in the entire scene and recording everything in focus for action vs. the Pocket 3 which at least seems more fit to the use case of having a blurry background when vlogging?
If they continue to set the focus at infinity then obviously... I'm hoping for a camera DESIGNED for vlogging where we are actually in focus at arm's distance.
Why nobody is comparing the Ace with the previous One R 1 inch sensor? Seems everyone forgot they already released an action camera which was modular. Will bet that next year they will launch the Ace Pro 1 inch....
It is not about the marketing or the Engineering, it is about the consumer. If the consumer had more knowledge and the time to learn, they could make better choices, thereby encouraging the marketing and engineering to step up.

I have the GoPro 8, which imo is the first good version of image stabilization. I'm still trying to figure out which version to upgrade to, probably the 10 since it'll be even more affordable now.
Idea for a video or video series: what camera has the best 1080p in 2023. I was shocked recently (and yeah, also got pretty pissy) when I compared 1080p from the FiLMiC Pro Legacy app in natural Gamma (on my 300$ used iPhone 12 Mini) compared to my ZV-1 and my Panasonic S5. The S5 looks great, but so does FiLMiC Pro. ZV-1 looks like the video was filmed in 2006! I'm so freaking mad at this!
I promise this isn’t a personal slight , but I’ve noticed that when you don’t get a free review copy you tear things apart HARD. You get the camera later in many cases and then have a completely different opinion.
I'm just going through the spec sheet flaws. Sometimes these thing don't matter in real life. I'm often wildly surprised lol. Like the Nikon Z30 with it's no IBIS, 8 bit footage is one of my favourite cameras now.
I'll be a contrarian. On the footage alone and your beautiful skin, I prefer the DJI. Your skin appears more yellow and has less contrast on the GoPro. DJI shadows in the background appear to be a bit more open. I like the apparent increase detail of the DJI as well. I really enjoy your channel. I'll have to digest all of the other points you were making. Nice rant and with 140K subscribers, I don't see why you are not getting advance camera product. You make the reviews work in spite of that.

I've had my share of GoPro, I'm done with them, if anyone is NOT innovative, that's GP imo, seriously, gen 12 and still heating issues wow. I find it somewhat humorous that all these GoPro users continue to 'overlook' the chronic issues gen after gen but when a camera that IS going to be a threat, well, let's not look at the winning features, let's concentrate and dwell on the let's be honest, not truly deal breaker things that most users don't care or even notice. I love my DJI Osmo original camera, this thing is a work horse and never gave me any problems since day one, so I went and bought the DJI Action 2, it's truly now a very pretty little paper weight because it's got a worse attitude then Paris Hilton, a little cold or hot it won't work, really? this is suppose to be an "action cam"? That really put a bad taste in my mouth with DJI, the A2 was not a cheap device. Let's really be honest here, side by side against DJI and GoPro, this device is an absolute strong contender, how many GoPros has there been and how many DJI Actions has there been? A pretty harsh 'conspiracy' theory don't you think? lol

I agree with the unnecessary megapixel count, but the low light footage looks incredible versus the others, even though the DJI has a sensor of the same size. Dynamic range is miles ahead on the Insta 360.
It doesn't work above 30 fps though.

the only thing i took from all the launch 'reviews' was that the ace footage looked better in every single comparison vs the DJI, and WAY better than the gopro.

Ok, here's my theory. The Ace Pro isn't done, but they didn't want to miss the holiday season and decided to ship it. They didn't want anyone really testing it, so they sent it to a bunch of TH-camr's who would play ball and do a soft review. Maybe they can turn it into something with a bunch of firmware updates?
The low light in the reviews for the Ace Pro looked great. Are you going to get it and review it? Pocket 3 too.

Putting AI into anything, is like creating an app for everything. I'm a software-Engineer. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that people are so “simple” and “chilling” nowadays. You guys are remarkable. You accept the weirdest, unneeded and unnecessary crap the companies throw at you, inflating the price of a product artificially. Certainly, it makes me happy, and I'm not complaining because it creates more jobs for us in the It-Sector. But seriously, how many bitter red and blue pills do you guys intend to take? Why do I say this? Because as an engineer, I also have hobbies and I would rather not purchase products with an app and AI forced on me. Especially not in simple tools like a powerbank (Anker Prime) or a toothbrush etc.
The good news is somebody mention it's pixel binning sensor! And the cropped zoom feature is the 4k without pixel binning using only the smaller pixel.
It's actually pretty cool, plus I saw some night footage it was literally day and night compared to GoPro

How come you did not have a hidden GoPro in the Insta360 board meeting when they decided all the wrong things they would give us?
FYI, for the 8k on these small sensors, the image is generated from a process called remosaicing, and the benefit of that is the sensor is actually truly a 4k (4000x3000) sensor, and sampling the 12mp image gets you the most accurate data.
Quad beyer also allows you to 4x your max native iso by adding together the quad beyer subpixels (like the a7s3 does)
All of this processing is done within the sensor so it doesn't consume any serious processing power.
The 4k is not compromised in any way now that sensors are bsi, and the 8k while it isn't as good as native 8k could be, it's good enough that you can use it
And ofc as other comments mentioned you can crop in and get a remosaiced 4k image with 2x crop if you want
Are the tiny lenses on action cams even enough to resolve anything above 4k? When you turn sharpenning totally off on gopro it is shockingly soft, and i'm fairly sure it's the same case for all of these action cams, if you shoot in raw on your phone you'll also notice how soft these tiny lenses really are.
@@definingslawek4731 yup, just because the image is soft doesnt mean the information is totally gone,
its just less information than if it were sharper.
What is crazy though is how much resolution you can actually squeeze from the tiny lenses, almost all of the "200 megapixel" phones get sharper from the remosaiced 200 megapixel than the native 12 megapixel
the problem is the iso performance from using all of the tiny subpixels individually is really awful, but in good light? its still substantially better
I bought a Gopro12 hoping I'd like LOG and I do not. Also did not like the HDR profile. Standard-flat still best... Can you explain the 5.3k vs 4k line skiping you mentioned, tho? I always use 4k just because I assumed it gives the stabilization more room to work.
4k doesn't crop, so why would stabe be better? Do a side by side and look at the difference, 5.3k is noticeably better not just resolution.

GoPro 12 got log update and new lut. I’m still not sure about it. It’s better than before.
I'm happily using my GoPro Hero10, most of the time with Max Lens Mod, and the only two things I hate about it are its low light capabilities (basically unusable in the woods) and its stupid and slow menu. - Do you see any alternatives for me at the moment? Btw. I won't lie, I was impressed by the PureVideo mode of Insta360, however AI generally tend to make stuff up - would be interesting to look at the footage more closely.
I've been very happy with my gopro10. I use it for bike packing. It's amazingly smooth going over bumpy ground, looks great when the sun is out, it'scaptured sone amazingscenes and is good for talking to camera. Rugged and durable. But the low light footage is bearly usable. I've just brought a Sony zv1 which should make a nice supplement to my gear and can handle low light levels.

Genuine question here... the 8K 24 fps is silly... but isn't the 8K sensor useful for what they are calling "clarity zoom" where it uses the center 4K of the 8K to punch in without a real reduction in quality? obviously I don't know if an action cams small lens can resolve well enough for that even if the sensor is 8K, but from the early samples it still looks useful. that said the lack of LOG, 10bit, replaceable lens glass etc. hurts the camera.
Action 4 uses the same sensor but is limited to pixel binding. DJI did the in-sensor-zoom in pocket 2, but now they just chose not to.
Who cares about that if you're not in focus? You need a close focusing filter, then anything you zoom on later will be blurry. It can come in handy, but it's not revolutionary.

The lack of close focus you note in the camera... wouldn't that only get worse if you give it a 1 inch sensor and fixed aperture like you suggest as real changes it could make? Your latest video on the Pocket 3 mentions it might be "too blurry" sometimes... wouldn't the same issue exist in an action cam with a 1 inch sensor AND be worse because action cams are more often used for taking in the entire scene and recording everything in focus for action vs. the Pocket 3 which at least seems more fit to the use case of having a blurry background when vlogging?
If they continue to set the focus at infinity then obviously... I'm hoping for a camera DESIGNED for vlogging where we are actually in focus at arm's distance.

Why nobody is comparing the Ace with the previous One R 1 inch sensor? Seems everyone forgot they already released an action camera which was modular. Will bet that next year they will launch the Ace Pro 1 inch....
It is not about the marketing or the Engineering, it is about the consumer. If the consumer had more knowledge and the time to learn, they could make better choices, thereby encouraging the marketing and engineering to step up.

What they dont tell you is that the AI features are not free! They are free for a trial period then they charge.
Idea for a video or video series: what camera has the best 1080p in 2023. I was shocked recently (and yeah, also got pretty pissy) when I compared 1080p from the FiLMiC Pro Legacy app in natural Gamma (on my 300$ used iPhone 12 Mini) compared to my ZV-1 and my Panasonic S5.
The S5 looks great, but so does FiLMiC Pro. ZV-1 looks like the video was filmed in 2006! I'm so freaking mad at this!
I promise this isn’t a personal slight , but I’ve noticed that when you don’t get a free review copy you tear things apart HARD. You get the camera later in many cases and then have a completely different opinion.
I'm just going through the spec sheet flaws. Sometimes these thing don't matter in real life. I'm often wildly surprised lol. Like the Nikon Z30 with it's no IBIS, 8 bit footage is one of my favourite cameras now.

I'll be a contrarian. On the footage alone and your beautiful skin, I prefer the DJI. Your skin appears more yellow and has less contrast on the GoPro. DJI shadows in the background appear to be a bit more open. I like the apparent increase detail of the DJI as well. I really enjoy your channel. I'll have to digest all of the other points you were making. Nice rant and with 140K subscribers, I don't see why you are not getting advance camera product. You make the reviews work in spite of that.
