This album surprised me, it’s got the fast melodic punk songs, some hard rock songs and some really good slower rock songs, been listening to them since early nineties and this album really made me happy, it was everything I wanted from the band, a mix of all their styles, my favorite tracks were, Strange days, 1981, Dilemma, look ma no brains, Suzy chapstick and fancy sauce, all the songs could be singles and that’s rare for a band to do nowadays, Great Album!! 🤘🤘Wonderful Review

As a person born in the late 80s who never got into Nirvana or Green Day, but has been a long time pop punk fan, I’m really appreciating this album. I think it’s a good time to get into Green Day because of all of the throwback vibes. I’m hearing Weezer and the arctic monkeys, the beetles, and Green Day influence lol
Great Review. The only part where i personally don`t agree is with the song Strange Days Are Here To Stay thats my favourite from the album. Its a fun album to listen to and i like that it feels very honest.

Impressive and comprehensive review. When someone puts this much time into a review like this, I can’t help but to want revisit this album after my first listen which didn’t blow me away. They got the guitar riff from P!nk, and she got it from "Black Night" from Deep Purple and they got it from "Summertime" by Ricky Nelson. It's been around forever. Also, Adeline is a street in Oakland that has a pretty big bar scene. "I'm sick in bed again. My head is under my pillow. My spirit's broken. My face is in the gutter singing". He's drunk, puking in the gutter and has a hangover.

BRO I’m glad I nailed it with the Nirvana reference with Bobby Sox. And some Weezer thrown in there for sure. I never did listen to Nirvana, but when I heard that chorus I was like OK they are going for 90s grunge here!!! I really like all the sounds they are throwing in this record man

You did a great job highlighting the strengths of each song whilst also being realistic about weakness and tired ideas being rehashed in the album. A short background on myself, I have been listening to Green Day since 2008 and have poured countless hours into their music leading up to 2013 when I stepped away from the band as a fan because of the inconsistencies with the triology. I found myself picking them back up again with Revolution Radio in 2017 and even got to see them live with Catfish and the Bottlemen that year and it was a cool show. I had seen them in 2009 on the 21st Century Breakdown tour which, to me, was much better than my experience in 2017. Development - Moving onto my thoughts on the album, I have had a love/hate relationship with Green Day for ten years. They were such an integral part of childhood and early teenage years, but I became bitter with the decline in songwriting quality. I have always tried to be objective when it comes to new music of theirs (I actually liked quite a few songs off Revolution Radio) and I thought that album was a step in the right direction. The issue with that album, though, was it had several good songs, but nothing outstanding. It conjured up thoughts of "21st Century Breakdown" part 2. Thoughts on the Album - With Saviors I feel it is a collection of stronger songs than what Revolution Radio provided, just far fewer of them. My standout tracks were Dilemma, 1981, Goodnight Adeline, and Suzie Chapstick to which I mostly chose because of their catchiness and lack of divisive politics. As I have grown older I certainly agree there are terrible things occuring in the United States, and the world as a whole, but I often disagree politically with Billie Joe on many fronts so listening to his unapologetic opinions was difficult for me at times. In short, I liked the songs that embraced his sensitive side. I liked the songs that were personal, rich in emotion, something I could relate to. Verdict - Aside from lyrical content, I felt this album in its entirety was severely disjointed as half of it was heavily personal and the other a mess of political conjecture. Musically and thematically the songs did not flow well together as they have on previous records like American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. That was what I was looking for from this record; If it is going to audaciously claim the high mantle of a "Savior", it better earn that title, and for me, it did not. It definitely left me on the edge of my seat, but in a way that I am looking forward to the next project in five years instead of basking in the present music. As much as I do not like it, I will probably always put deep hope in the band that they will someday produce a record that captures my heart, this is a step in the right direction, but for me personally (my opinion entirely) I am left disappointed again. I do not think this is some of their best work as they claim. They certainly are implementing new elements into their music which I am in full support of, but I just find myself bored and wanting more from Billie Joe as a person, not a political monarch. I can understand how that can rub someone of the opposite political persuasion the wrong way though. Especially these days when people are trapped in info bubbles that drive deeper polarity. Most modern pop artists veer away from politics because they don't want to ostracize half of their audience potential and therefore limit their potential income. Green Day is not one of those artists. I admire them for that. BTW, I'm not a fan of Ted Nugent or Kid Rock's politics at all but I'll still listen to some of their music (primarily the early good stuff). Thanks again!

I even liked American Idiot and 21stCBD, but in the polarised society we live in now I just want to enjoy some sort of entertainment that is free from polemic. Even video games have been infiltrated and I just find myself overwhelmed by it.

It's really nice to see a more in depth review from someone who seems to have listened to the album more than once. I've seen several other videos about Saviors which were "first reactions" and most of them were mediocre, but even I didn't really appreciate the album at first. I thought it was pretty good but not exceptional. Something about it kept me coming back though and every time I listened to it I liked it more and added another song or two to my favorite. After half a dozen or so spins I loved the whole thing and now would rank it around sixth in their discography. I've been a fan since Dookie came out and am going to see them live for the first time in September! Thanks for the great review!

I'll listen to an album at least 10-15 times before I form a solid opinion. Many albums frankly aren't that good upon just one listen, you need to live with an album a bit so you can fully digest it. I actually listened to the entire Saviors again today! It really is a great release from them. Thanks again!!

Corvette Summer is so fun and sounds like Green Day. Have you heard the New Found Glory album Radiosurgery? It’s supposed to be a tribute to Green Day style. I wonder what you think. “Trainwreck” has a really sweet riff. “Drill It In My Brain” and “Dumped” are other good stand outs to me. Along with the title track opening the album of course.
If you only check out ONE of those tracks please check out “Drill It In My Brain” by new found glory I really wonder what you think! Just give him a break on the vocals okay lol. But the breakdown in the song is done so well IMO!!

I am now 42 and I can agree with you that most of their leader albums here I’ve been weak as a whole, with good tracks, mixed in except for father of all motherfuckers, which was a terrible album the only one in their discography that I would ever say that about. But saviors is definitely more of a return to form again, I appreciate your take on this album keep up the good work definitely will be looking forward to more videos.
Great review. I've been a Green Day since American Idiot and Saviors comes third for me, after Dookie and American Idiot. I think Strange Days is one of the better tracks, but I agree that the Saviors song is a bit of a letdown. I'm stoked to see them on tour this year. They're playing the entirety of Dookie and American Idiot, which I'm sure will be phenomenal.
Really good Review! One correction: The album cover is photoshopped. The boy on the original cover doesn't smile. They did that, for, as you pointed out, present the vibe of the record very correctly.

Your rating is in line with mine. Good, not great, but mostly fun and enjoyable album. I just put 2+2 together on the "ever since Bowie died" line ... that's also when you-know-who wrapped up the nomination and went on to win in November.
Great review. Well spoken and you did your homework and were prepared. I agree with most of your analysis. Some of the lyrics are not great but very solid effort, esp at this point in their career. As a longtime fan, I would rank about in the middle of their discography. Def behind AI, dookie, nimrod, insomniac and kerplunk. 7.5-8/10 for me

love your video. (makes mine look uneducated :), Just subscribed. I give it a solid B-. I like the under produced early records of Green Day back on LOOKOUT Records. But songs like "1981" took me right back to 1993 and seeing them live for the first time with Bad Religion and All. I never thought the album title was referring to the band being saviors, especially being in quotes. However, I don’t recall the lyrical content of that track to begin with. But just going off the album title alone, I would assume it’s poking fun at people in our lives, who are supposed to be saviors and how they are overrated. As a longtime, pop, punk fan, but never a Green Day fan, I’m really loving this album. Especially because it came out the same day as the new neck deep album, which just sounds very generic. Meanwhile, this Green Day album is pretty dynamic. It’s got some Really throwback songs that remind me of Green Day even though I wasn’t listening to them back then. And I really like that. Look Ma No Brains is just a great Green Day throwback and it’s a fun little punk song just the way I like it. But then he also borrows styles from the Beatles and the Arctic Monkeys, which really makes his fake British accent quite obvious, which is pretty awkward. at the same time, it makes it sound in style for some of these other European bands so it’s whatever. Gotta have your influence. It just makes the album a little less genuine. But dynamic, and I love it. It’s a fun album. I even hear some Alkaline Trio influence in the song Dilemma. Did you ever listen to that band? Gotta listen to Radio by them.

I have the album on cd and legit didn't notice the quotations until you just mentioned it, not that i didnt believe you (and you even had the cover on screen) but I even had to double check on my own copy 😂😂. Also Billie isnt just a supporter, he's part of the lgbtq community as he's bisexual. Although the lgbt themes aren't to be ignored or overlooked and would have been intentional, as with any song like this it's about him and his wife Adrienne and the switching back and forth is switching between his perspective and Adrienne's, not switching between asking a girl out and asking a guy out. Hence the line 'you're not just any type of girl, my one true love and you're my world'

Bobby Sox doesn’t start with acoustic guitar. But that song really rocks. I don’t think it necessarily touches on a gender fluid character, it could be about 2 different people. The singer just might not be straight. Or it could be from the perspective of 2 different people back and forth. He also asks do you wanna be my best friend.
Maybe Billie named the song Fancy Sauce since its kind of silly and "punk" at the same time. Look ma no brains, suzie chapstick and Fancy sauce are my favourites from the album . Thanks for the great review

I mentioned that 'Saviors' as an album title may come off as arrogant but I then explained how it likely wasn't. I don't consider GD as an arrogant band in any way.
I think there are way too many tracks on this record. Maybe 6- 7 are in my mind what should really have been on the record. Really bloated sadly - like modern life?
American dream to me is too similar to American idiot. I understand how they want to capture the nostalgia and try to re-create what was successful, but it just comes off as a carbon copy in the process. It’s an instant skip on the record for me. And it’s hella cheesy.
Billie Joe uses MANY double entendres and often speaks from another person's pov. There's a lot people miss. I love Green Day.

Really good Review! One correction: The album cover is photoshopped. The boy on the original cover doesn't smile. They did that, for, as you pointed out, present the vibe of the record very correctly.

Your rating is in line with mine. Good, not great, but mostly fun and enjoyable album. I just put 2+2 together on the "ever since Bowie died" line ... that's also when you-know-who wrapped up the nomination and went on to win in November.
Yep, 2016 was a real pivot point in culture and politics for sure. We're on a new trajectory ever since Bowie died.
Great review. Well spoken and you did your homework and were prepared. I agree with most of your analysis. Some of the lyrics are not great but very solid effort, esp at this point in their career. As a longtime fan, I would rank about in the middle of their discography. Def behind AI, dookie, nimrod, insomniac and kerplunk. 7.5-8/10 for me

love your video. (makes mine look uneducated :), Just subscribed. I give it a solid B-. I like the under produced early records of Green Day back on LOOKOUT Records. But songs like "1981" took me right back to 1993 and seeing them live for the first time with Bad Religion and All. Since they are all now 51, i am glad to see these young pop punkers haven't slowed down too much. Cheers to ya and thanks again for a great video.

It’s great and I’ve been listening to it in my car on repeat.
I never thought the album title was referring to the band being saviors, especially being in quotes. However, I don’t recall the lyrical content of that track to begin with. But just going off the album title alone, I would assume it’s poking fun at people in our lives, who are supposed to be saviors and how they are overrated.
As a longtime, pop, punk fan, but never a Green Day fan, I’m really loving this album. Especially because it came out the same day as the new neck deep album, which just sounds very generic. Meanwhile, this Green Day album is pretty dynamic. It’s got some Really throwback songs that remind me of Green Day even though I wasn’t listening to them back then. And I really like that. Look Ma No Brains is just a great Green Day throwback and it’s a fun little punk song just the way I like it. But then he also borrows styles from the Beatles and the Arctic Monkeys, which really makes his fake British accent quite obvious, which is pretty awkward. at the same time, it makes it sound in style for some of these other European bands so it’s whatever. Gotta have your influence. It just makes the album a little less genuine. But dynamic, and I love it. It’s a fun album. I even hear some Alkaline Trio influence in the song Dilemma. Did you ever listen to that band? Gotta listen to Radio by them.
And yes the tone, the mix, the master, is amazing and NAILS the throwback style.

I have the album on cd and legit didn't notice the quotations until you just mentioned it, not that i didnt believe you (and you even had the cover on screen) but I even had to double check on my own copy 😂😂. Also Billie isnt just a supporter, he's part of the lgbtq community as he's bisexual. Although the lgbt themes aren't to be ignored or overlooked and would have been intentional, as with any song like this it's about him and his wife Adrienne and the switching back and forth is switching between his perspective and Adrienne's, not switching between asking a girl out and asking a guy out. Hence the line 'you're not just any type of girl, my one true love and you're my world'

Bobby Sox doesn’t start with acoustic guitar. But that song really rocks. I don’t think it necessarily touches on a gender fluid character, it could be about 2 different people. The singer just might not be straight. Or it could be from the perspective of 2 different people back and forth. He also asks do you wanna be my best friend.
Fancy Sauce doesn’t sound acoustic either. Sounds like a Fender electric.

I mentioned that 'Saviors' as an album title may come off as arrogant but I then explained how it likely wasn't. I don't consider GD as an arrogant band in any way.
I think there are way too many tracks on this record. Maybe 6- 7 are in my mind what should really have been on the record. Really bloated sadly - like modern life?
I agree that the record should have been a bit trimmed but I'd only remove about 3 of the songs. It would have made for an overall tighter release.
This album has too many songs. 10 would be tighter and more effective.
I agree but I'd probably keep it at 12 songs. Regardless, a little trimming would make for a stronger overall album.

American dream to me is too similar to American idiot. I understand how they want to capture the nostalgia and try to re-create what was successful, but it just comes off as a carbon copy in the process. It’s an instant skip on the record for me. And it’s hella cheesy.
