First. THANK YOU! Second. Please know that you are very much appreciated for taking time out of your life to freely give all of us newbies clear instructions and showing us the why and when and how. Your kindness has enabled so many to succeed. I want to express how truly grateful I am and I believe many others share that same appreciation. You have enabled us to not only knit your sweater patterns, but to also feel that sense of accomplishment that spills over into other parts of our lives. You, dear Ashley, deserve gold stars and ice cream cones! Again THANK YOU,
I've been putting off my current project for over a week because I didn't understand what it was asking me to do with the GSR section. Watched the first 4 minutes of this and completely understand how GSRs work. This video is seriously helpful and very straightforward. Thanks!
You are literally my go to for anything "new" I need to learn. THANK YOU! I just started knitting 2 Months ago. I am 3 completed projects in, 100% addicted, and would not have completed a single item without your help. I am not sure how everything seems to make sense once you explain it, butI have just started a new sweater and 100% understood the pattern simply based on things I have learned watching your videos. Again, a huge THANK YOU!
This is such a great tutorial. I don't think there are many (any) like it that explain everything so clearly. I was so flustered before I watched it. I feel like you've opened up a whole new skill level for me. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
This is THE MOST helpful knitting video ever. I was in utter confusion about what was happening and could only find flat lay tutorials. The beginning was so necessary for the conceptual understanding. Thank you!
Thanks a million! I’ve been obssesively looking for an answer to my questions and after searching for 1,5 days (all day long) I’ve found it in your video! You saved my sanity ❤️ Thank you for that tutorial!!!
Thank you so much! I had knit a sweater for my daughter as my first attempt at a sweater and did it by just winging it (I struggle with written instructions so I had just watched someone make a basic sweater using straight needles and creating panels and sewing them all together) but then I got some circular needles and followed your Fall Bluff raglan sweater tutorial and I am immensely proud that I actually made a sweater I can wear and it looks pretty good! It was exactly the encouragement I needed to build my confidence that I can learn how to continue to advance my knitting skills and I am eager to tackle another sweater with more shaping around the neckline. You have a real gift for explaining and demonstrating the why’s and how’s of these techniques. Most tutorials are more like expert knitters who have forgotten how tricky these techniques are when you are just learning and seem to always skip over the concept of why they are used, which made me feel like maybe knitting more complex projects just wasn’t going to be for me. Now I’m excited to gradually expand what is possible to do ❤
Hi Ashley, This is my first time doing the German Short Row. I watched other videos and was so confused. I was about to frog my sweater. Just wanted to say thank you for your video. It has been the most helpful and I have gotten past the short rows. Thanks again! You're the best!!!
Hey Ashley! This tutorial was instrumental in knitting my first adult sweater! Your instructions are clear and concise! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this technique!
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve read the pattern I’m working on so many times and have not been able to figure what they are talking about 😅 This is exactly what I needed to see!
I am so happy with these clearly explained videos. Long searched and now found. But I would really like to see a video of shortened rows in the neckline of the back with your explanation. I have seen the neckline in the front but I would like to learn it in the neck (back). I like loose collars, or waterfall necks as they are sometimes called here in the Netherlands 😉 I hope you read my message and would like to help me and many others with me. Greetings Esther
Thank you SO MUCH! I am knitting my first sweater and couldn’t visualize exactly what to do. By you showing in the video how to do this in the round, I have a much better understanding of the pattern instructions. Great and super helpful video.
I’ve done German short rows at least 5 times but I working on a sweater pattern right now that was confusing. I think I knew what she meant but want to watch some people knit first. This helped me with the pattern but also helped me realized I was doing German Short Rows wrong! I wasn’t working the turn, so I’d knit to and then turn, instead of knitting 3 then turning. This was great, thank you for the visual overview in the beginning. I wish I watched this a couple years ago.
I’m making the Calliope Sweater by Espace Tricot. I’ve never worked German short rows before, this tutorial is SO helpful. Adding it to my Ravelry notes for other newbies to reference.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, Ashley! So clearly demonstrated and explained. 👍👍 I am going to try it with the simple top down sweater on your other video.
Love this video, as usual I'm really satisfied with your content. The video is not rushed, you walk us through all the steps so we can see clearly what we have to do. And more importantly, you explain the logic behind it. I feel this is such a great help to improve, more than just blindfully following without knowing why we do this or that. Thank you so much!
Hi Ashley, thank you for this tutorial, it’s the most helpful one I’ve found so far 😊 For my next winter bluff sweater, I plan on adding some short rows. How many stitches into the front should I start my short rows, and how many rows should I do? I’m struggling to visualise it 😕
Hi dear Ashley, Really great explanation. I did not understand how these short rows were made but with your excellent and very clear explanation I finally understood. I am blind and love knitting but watching videos is not always the easiest thing so it’s got to be crystal clear for me to learn and be able to apply the knowledge and you can do exactly what I need. Really appreciate many many thanks God bless you
Oh this make me so happy! I always struggled with German Short Rows so once I finally figured it out, I knew I had to share it with everyone :). Happy knitting!

I agree. It's so scary to invest in some quality yarn (I'm also a big gal) to make a first sweater when you're not really sure how to actually make it fit. I know me. If it isn't comfortable, it'll drift to the back of the closet. I think in ready to solo too.

I like how you give instructions very easy to understand especially for beginners like me and after 2 years of knitting and crocheting I want to try on complicated ones for example this German short rows or the neck elevation in the raglan but I have a question about doing short rows and raglan increases at the same time and so I noticed from this pattern that, should we increase both from the right side and wrong side? But not alternating?
hi there! Same concept applies with raglan increases -- every other round. It's just confusing because you're just doing them on the wrong side of the work
So your short rows are in the front? Wouldn't this make the front higher then the back. I am confused sorry could you explain please? I have never tried this before just want to be sure before I start my increases

Nope! Short rows create a dip so that the front is lower than the back. Best way to see it is to try to do it and it will make more sense!
I have the same question. All other tuts show short rows in the back (thought it creates more fabric).

Hi! If the raglan sweater is knitted bottom up, how would the short rows would be made?
I don’t make raglan sweaters from the bottom up, but I’m assuming the logic is the same!
For the right sleeve you always work the raglans on the right side of the sweater, and for the left sleeve you always work the raglans on the wrong side of the sweater? (Depending on where your row begins I guess)
Yes just depends where your round begins/ends!
Could you explain the difference between German short rows and short rows.
